  • echo that outputs to stderr

    - by BCS
Is there a standard bash tool that acts like echo but outputs to stderr rather than stdout? I know I can do echo foo 1>&2 but it's kinda ugly and, I suspect, error prone (e.g. more likely to get edited wrong when things change).

  • Script to parse emails for attachments

    - by Swanny
I am looking for a way to monitor a Linux mbox email account, when an email arrives I would like to download an attachment from the email and save the attachment (CSV file) so that it may be used by a PHP script. What would be the best way of going about this? I have looked at PHP's IMAP functions but this does not appear to be the most appropriate method when a simple bash script may be all that is required?

  • msysgit bash shell- how to troubleshoot "cannot find command"

    - by Frank Schwieterman
I need help getting git extensions to run with msysgit. I have had bad luck with extensions git-tfs and git-fetchall, in both cases it is the same problem. The addon will require a file to be placed where git can find it (git-tfs.exe and git-fetchall.sh). I understand this to mean the files need to be in a directory that is in the 'PATH' environment variable. In both cases I get stuck at this point: $ git-diffall bash: git-diffall: command not found or: $ git-tfs bash: git-tfs: command not found When I run echo %PATH% from a regular command shell, it shows my path variable includes the directories where git-diffall and git-tfs are. How can I debug this, or am I missing something? Is there a way within msysgit to verify the command search path is what I expect?

  • cannt run phpunit tests on bash ubuntu 11.10

    - by Mohamad Elbialy
i'm working with ubuntu 11.10 as root on my local machine, i've installed xampp 1.7.7 and i'm a newbie to ubuntu, while following a tutorial on sitepoint(http://www.sitepoint.com/getting-started-with-pear/) on how to install pear to use PhpUnit, i didnt notice it then, but it seems that i installed or used an existing php version 5.3.6 in CL to do that, also the pear installation was built on this version, while xampp being installed,i now have two versions of php, xampp's 5.3.8 and the 5.3.6, anyway, what i want to do is to use the existing xampp php version and build pear on that, to make all my work through xampp.so my questions are: how to uninstall the php V5.3.6 and it's pear installation? how to link the CL with the php ver. of xampp? how to build the next pear installation on the php ver. of xampp? i want all my web dev. work through xampp, is there anything else i need to unistall, to avoid this confusion? 4. i did the following in attampet to solve the problem: i wrote this in bash: gedit ~/.bashrc i added that to the end of ~/.bashrc file in attempt to change environment path: export PATH=/opt/lampp/bin:$PATH export PATH=/opt/lampp/lib/php:$PATH export PATH=/opt/lampp/lib/php/PHPUnit/pearcmd.php:$PATH i checked the php and pear version using 'php -v' and 'pear list' i got an ouput of: PHP 5.3.8 (cli) (built: Sep 19 2011 13:29:27) Copyright (c) 1997-2011 The PHP Group Zend Engine v2.3.0, Copyright (c) 1998-2011 Zend Technologies and for pear: Installed packages, channel pear.php.net: ========================================= Package Version State Archive_Tar 1.3.9 stable Console_Getopt 1.3.1 stable PEAR 1.9.4 stable PHPUnit 1.3.2 stable Structures_Graph 1.0.4 stable XML_Util 1.2.1 stable when i run: 'phpunit MessageTest.php': i get PHP Warning: require_once(PHP/CodeCoverage/Filter.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /usr/bin/phpunit on line 38 Warning: require_once(PHP/CodeCoverage/Filter.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /usr/bin/phpunit on line 38 PHP Fatal error: require_once(): Failed opening required 'PHP/CodeCoverage/Filter.php' (include_path='.:/php/includes:/opt/lampp/lib/php:/opt/lampp/bin:/opt/lampp/lib/php/PEAR') in /usr/bin/phpunit on line 38 5.i ran the following commands as reported in other questions as a solution to that error: sudo apt-get remove phpunit sudo pear channel-discover pear.phpunit.de sudo pear channel-discover pear.symfony-project.com sudo pear channel-discover components.ez.no sudo pear update-channels sudo pear upgrade-all sudo pear install --alldeps phpunit/PHPUnit sudo apt-get install phpunit and updated include path of php.ini to be: include_path = ".:/php/includes:/opt/lampp/lib/php:/opt/lampp/bin:/opt/lampp/lib/php/PEAR" the php file MessageTest.php: <?php require 'PHPUnit/Autoload.php'; $path = '/opt/lampp/lib/php/PEAR'; set_include_path(get_include_path() . • Calling Grep inside Java gives incorrect results when calling grep in shell gives correct results.

  • How do I create a Launcher in Ubuntu 9.1 that runs a shell script?

    - by mkelley33
Here's my situation: New to Ubuntu (just nstalled 9.10 Karmic Koala 64 bit) Purpose: to easily run PyCharm without too much typing (ie. cd... ./pycharm.sh) Want to create desktop Launcher instead of terminal & typing (without resorting to the "Run in Terminal" option) Tried to create Launcher to executes .sh script in Document directory Right-clicked Desktop Create Launcher a. Type == Application; Browse [insert absolute path to .sh script]; no luck b. Type == Application in Terminal; Browse ...ditto I'm open to any other alternatives that involve as little typing as possible. I would like to just start Ubuntu, click Launcher icons, and have terminals spring to life, running the intended scripts. Crazy? No. Lazy? Probably. Productive? Hopefully :)

  • How to resolve symbolic links in a shell script

    - by Greg Hewgill
Given an absolute or relative path (in a Unix-like system), I would like to determine the full path of the target after resolving any intermediate symlinks. Bonus points for also resolving ~username notation at the same time. If the target is a directory, it might be possible to chdir() into the directory and then call getcwd(), but I really want to do this from a shell script rather than writing a C helper. Unfortunately, shells have a tendency to try to hide the existence of symlinks from the user (this is bash on OS X): $ ls -ld foo bar drwxr-xr-x 2 greg greg 68 Aug 11 22:36 bar lrwxr-xr-x 1 greg greg 3 Aug 11 22:36 foo -> bar $ cd foo $ pwd /Users/greg/tmp/foo $ What I want is a function resolve() such that when executed from the tmp directory in the above example, resolve("foo") == "/Users/greg/tmp/bar".

  • Processing a tab delimited file with shell script processing

    - by Lilly Tooner
Hello, normally I would use Python/Perl for this procedure but I find myself (for political reasons) having to pull this off using a bash shell. I have a large tab delimited file that contains six columns and the second column is integers. I need to shell script a solution that would verify that the file indeed is six columns and that the second column is indeed integers. I am assuming that I would need to use sed/awk here somewhere. Problem is that I'm not that familiar with sed/awk. Any advice would be appreciated. Many thanks! Lilly

  • How do I reload .bashrc without logging out and back in?

    - by Jed Daniels
Hello StackOverflowers, If I make changes to .bashrc, how do I reload it without logging out and back in? I'm embarrassed that I don't know the answer to this question, since I do a fair amount of bash scripting. I'm also couldn't decide if I should post this on ServerFault, but since I do more scripting than sysadmin, I chose StackOverflow; go ahead and move it if you (the community) feel that SF would have been a better choice. Thanks in advance. I'm sure once I hear the answer I'll be saying "doh! I knew that.", but it'll probably be good to have the answer here for other folks like me that should know (or do), but can't remember (I did search before asking, and couldn't find the answer, sorry if this is a repost). --jed

  • Running lame from php

    - by gok
I am trying to run lame from a php script. I have tried these, but no luck, I don't get anything returned! Any ideas? system('lame', $returnarr); system('lame --help', $returnarr); exec('lame', $returnarr); passthru('lame', $returnarr); even this one returns nothing: exec('which lame', $returnarr); I am on OSX and final deployment will be on Linux. Do you have better suggestions for an automated wav-mp3 conversion? From php, should I execute a bash script that executes Lame?

  • How to execute with /bin/false shell

    - by Amar
I am trying to setup per-user fastcgi scripts that will run each on a different port and with a different user. Here is example of my script: #!/bin/bash BIND=127.0.0.1:9001 USER=user PHP_FCGI_CHILDREN=2 PHP_FCGI_MAX_REQUESTS=10000 etc... However, if I add user with /bin/false (which I want, since this is about to be something like shared hosting and I don't want users to have shell access), the script is run under 1001, 1002 'user' which, as my Google searches showed, might be a security hole. My question is: Is it possible to allow user(s) to execute shell scripts but disable them so they cannot log in via SSH?

  • How can I copy files with names containing spaces and UNICODE, when using a shell script?

    - by LOlliffe
I have a list of files that I'm trying to copy and move (using cp and mv) in a bash shell script. The problem that I'm running into, is that I can't get either command to recognize a huge number of files, seemingly because the filenames contain spaces and/or unicode characters. I couldn't find any switches to decode/re-encode these characters. Instead, for example, if I copy "file name.xml", I get "*.xml" and a script error that the file wasn't found for my result. Does anyone know settings or commands that will deal with these files?

  • AWK If/ElseConditional Problem

    - by neversaint
    I have a data that looks like this: foo foo scaffold_7 1 4845 6422 4845 bar bar scaffold_7 -1 14689 16310 16310 What I want to do is to process the above lines where I just want to print column 1,2,3, 7 and one more column after 7th. But with condition when printing column 7 onwards. Below is my awk script: awk '{ if ($4=="+") { {end=$6-$5}{print $1 "\t" $2 "\t" $3 "\t" $4 "\t" $7 "\t" end+$7} } else {end=$6-$5}{print $1 "\t" $2 "\t" $3 "\t" $4 "\t" $7-end "\t" $7} }' But why it doesn't achieve the desired result like this? foo foo scaffold_7 1 4845 6422 bar bar scaffold_7 -1 14689 16310 Note that the arithmetic (e.g. $7-end or end+$7) is a must. So we can't just swap column from input file. Furthermore this AWK will be inside a bash script.

  • Getting ID of an instance newly launched with ec2-api-tools

    - by Jonik
I'm launching an EC2 instance, by invoking ec2-run-instances from simple a bash script, and want to perform further operations on that instance (e.g. associate elastic IP), for which I need the instance id. The command is something like ec2-run-instances ami-dd8ea5a9 -K pk.pem -C cert.pem --region eu-west-1 -t c1.medium -n 1, and its output: RESERVATION r-b6ea58c1 696664755663 default INSTANCE i-945af9e3 ami-dd8ea5b9 pending 0 c1.medium 2010-04-15T10:47:56+0000 eu-west-1a aki-b02a01c4 ari-39c2e94d In this example, i-945af9e3 is the id I'm after. So, I'd need a simple way to parse the id from what the command returns - how would you go about doing it? My AWK is a little rusty... Feel free to use any tool available on a typical Linux box. (If there's a way to get it directly using EC2-API-tools, all the better. But afaik there's no EC2 command to e.g. return the id of the most recently launched instance.)

  • Can I have a shell alias evaluate a history substitution command?

    - by Brandon
I'm trying to write an alias for cd !!:1, which takes the 2nd word of the previous command, and changes to the directory of that name. For instance, if I type rails new_project cd !!:1 the second line will cd into the "new_project" directory. Since !!:1 is awkward to type (even though it's short, it requires three SHIFTed keys, on opposite sides of of the keyboard, and then an unSHIFTed version of the key that was typed twice SHIFTed), I want to just type something like cd- but since the !!:1 is evaluated on the command line, I (OBVIOUSLY) can't just do alias cd-=!!:1 or I'd be saving an alias that contained "new_project" hard-coded into it. So I tried alias cd-='!!:1' The problem with this is that the !!:1 is NEVER evaluated, and I get a message that no directory named !!:1 exists. How can I make an alias where the history substitution is evaluated AT THE TIME I ISSUE THE ALIAS COMMAND, not when I define the alias, and not never? (I've tried this in both bash and zsh, and get the same results in both.)

But this command is based on a file that has a r/w permission for the user, hence the possibility to change these data. I would like to log these data over two months. Why would I like to do that ? In fact, I would like to prevent a normal user to use a computer more than an hour a day - except week-ends, and 10 hours in total a week. - by kaustav datta
    Having trouble executing an IF statement through tcsh. This works FINE for me - #!/bin/bash if echo `cal|tail -6|sed -e 's/^.\{3\}//' -e 's/.\{3\}$//' |tr -s '[:blank:]' '\n' | head -11|tail -10|tr -s '\n' ' '`|grep -w `date "+%e"` then echo "present" else echo "absent" fi This is the PROBLEM - #!/bin/tcsh if echo `cal|tail -6|sed -e 's/^.\{3\}//' -e 's/.\{3\}$//' |tr -s '[:blank:]' '\n' | head -11|tail -10|tr -s '\n' ' '`|grep -w `date "+%e"` then echo "present" else echo "absent" endif Getting this error- if: Expression Syntax. then: Command not found. I really need this to run using "tcsh"

  • nested if: too many arguments?

    - by FLX
For some reason this code creates problems: source="/foo/bar/" destination="/home/oni/" if [ -d $source ]; then echo "Source directory exists" if [ -d $destination ]; then echo "Destination directory exists" rsync -raz --delete --ignore-existing --ignore-times --size-only --stats --progress $source $destination chmod -R 0755 $destination else echo "Destination directory does not exists" fi else echo "Source directory does not exists" fi It errors out with: Source directory exists /usr/bin/copyfoo: line 7: [: too many arguments Destination directory does not exists I used nested if statements in bash before without a problem, what simple mistake am I overlooking? Thanks!

  • Smart auto-completition for staged git file names, used with difftool

    - by piobyz
I'd like to have a smart auto-completition of currently staged file names when using git diff. Example: modified: DIR1/LongCamelCaseFileName.h modified: DIR1/AnotherLongCamelCaseFileName.m modified: DIR1/AndThereAreALotOfThemInDir1.m modified: DIR2/file4.m and here, using bash tab-auto-complete functionality I'd like to use it with git diff where by smart I mean that after typing git diff I'd need to type only a short part of the staged file name that I want to diff, and without a dirname, so for example git diff And<TAB> would result in git diff AndThereAreALotOfThemInDir1.m Actually, without a dir-ommiting-part it would be still useful (auto-completing using only staged files pool).
