  • Inheritance Mapping Strategies with Entity Framework Code First CTP5 Part 1: Table per Hierarchy (TPH)

    - by mortezam
    A simple strategy for mapping classes to database tables might be “one table for every entity persistent class.” This approach sounds simple enough and, indeed, works well until we encounter inheritance. Inheritance is such a visible structural mismatch between the object-oriented and relational worlds because object-oriented systems model both “is a” and “has a” relationships. SQL-based models provide only "has a" relationships between entities; SQL database management systems don’t support type inheritance—and even when it’s available, it’s usually proprietary or incomplete. There are three different approaches to representing an inheritance hierarchy: Table per Hierarchy (TPH): Enable polymorphism by denormalizing the SQL schema, and utilize a type discriminator column that holds type information. Table per Type (TPT): Represent "is a" (inheritance) relationships as "has a" (foreign key) relationships. Table per Concrete class (TPC): Discard polymorphism and inheritance relationships completely from the SQL schema.I will explain each of these strategies in a series of posts and this one is dedicated to TPH. In this series we'll deeply dig into each of these strategies and will learn about "why" to choose them as well as "how" to implement them. Hopefully it will give you a better idea about which strategy to choose in a particular scenario. Inheritance Mapping with Entity Framework Code FirstAll of the inheritance mapping strategies that we discuss in this series will be implemented by EF Code First CTP5. The CTP5 build of the new EF Code First library has been released by ADO.NET team earlier this month. EF Code-First enables a pretty powerful code-centric development workflow for working with data. I’m a big fan of the EF Code First approach, and I’m pretty excited about a lot of productivity and power that it brings. When it comes to inheritance mapping, not only Code First fully supports all the strategies but also gives you ultimate flexibility to work with domain models that involves inheritance. The fluent API for inheritance mapping in CTP5 has been improved a lot and now it's more intuitive and concise in compare to CTP4. A Note For Those Who Follow Other Entity Framework ApproachesIf you are following EF's "Database First" or "Model First" approaches, I still recommend to read this series since although the implementation is Code First specific but the explanations around each of the strategies is perfectly applied to all approaches be it Code First or others. A Note For Those Who are New to Entity Framework and Code-FirstIf you choose to learn EF you've chosen well. If you choose to learn EF with Code First you've done even better. To get started, you can find a great walkthrough by Scott Guthrie here and another one by ADO.NET team here. In this post, I assume you already setup your machine to do Code First development and also that you are familiar with Code First fundamentals and basic concepts. You might also want to check out my other posts on EF Code First like Complex Types and Shared Primary Key Associations. A Top Down Development ScenarioThese posts take a top-down approach; it assumes that you’re starting with a domain model and trying to derive a new SQL schema. Therefore, we start with an existing domain model, implement it in C# and then let Code First create the database schema for us. However, the mapping strategies described are just as relevant if you’re working bottom up, starting with existing database tables. I’ll show some tricks along the way that help you dealing with nonperfect table layouts. Let’s start with the mapping of entity inheritance. -- The Domain ModelIn our domain model, we have a BillingDetail base class which is abstract (note the italic font on the UML class diagram below). We do allow various billing types and represent them as subclasses of BillingDetail class. As for now, we support CreditCard and BankAccount: Implement the Object Model with Code First As always, we start with the POCO classes. Note that in our DbContext, I only define one DbSet for the base class which is BillingDetail. Code First will find the other classes in the hierarchy based on Reachability Convention. public abstract class BillingDetail  {     public int BillingDetailId { get; set; }     public string Owner { get; set; }             public string Number { get; set; } } public class BankAccount : BillingDetail {     public string BankName { get; set; }     public string Swift { get; set; } } public class CreditCard : BillingDetail {     public int CardType { get; set; }                     public string ExpiryMonth { get; set; }     public string ExpiryYear { get; set; } } public class InheritanceMappingContext : DbContext {     public DbSet<BillingDetail> BillingDetails { get; set; } } This object model is all that is needed to enable inheritance with Code First. If you put this in your application you would be able to immediately start working with the database and do CRUD operations. Before going into details about how EF Code First maps this object model to the database, we need to learn about one of the core concepts of inheritance mapping: polymorphic and non-polymorphic queries. Polymorphic Queries LINQ to Entities and EntitySQL, as object-oriented query languages, both support polymorphic queries—that is, queries for instances of a class and all instances of its subclasses, respectively. For example, consider the following query: IQueryable<BillingDetail> linqQuery = from b in context.BillingDetails select b; List<BillingDetail> billingDetails = linqQuery.ToList(); Or the same query in EntitySQL: string eSqlQuery = @"SELECT VAlUE b FROM BillingDetails AS b"; ObjectQuery<BillingDetail> objectQuery = ((IObjectContextAdapter)context).ObjectContext                                                                          .CreateQuery<BillingDetail>(eSqlQuery); List<BillingDetail> billingDetails = objectQuery.ToList(); linqQuery and eSqlQuery are both polymorphic and return a list of objects of the type BillingDetail, which is an abstract class but the actual concrete objects in the list are of the subtypes of BillingDetail: CreditCard and BankAccount. Non-polymorphic QueriesAll LINQ to Entities and EntitySQL queries are polymorphic which return not only instances of the specific entity class to which it refers, but all subclasses of that class as well. On the other hand, Non-polymorphic queries are queries whose polymorphism is restricted and only returns instances of a particular subclass. In LINQ to Entities, this can be specified by using OfType<T>() Method. For example, the following query returns only instances of BankAccount: IQueryable<BankAccount> query = from b in context.BillingDetails.OfType<BankAccount>() select b; EntitySQL has OFTYPE operator that does the same thing: string eSqlQuery = @"SELECT VAlUE b FROM OFTYPE(BillingDetails, Model.BankAccount) AS b"; In fact, the above query with OFTYPE operator is a short form of the following query expression that uses TREAT and IS OF operators: string eSqlQuery = @"SELECT VAlUE TREAT(b as Model.BankAccount)                       FROM BillingDetails AS b                       WHERE b IS OF(Model.BankAccount)"; (Note that in the above query, Model.BankAccount is the fully qualified name for BankAccount class. You need to change "Model" with your own namespace name.) Table per Class Hierarchy (TPH)An entire class hierarchy can be mapped to a single table. This table includes columns for all properties of all classes in the hierarchy. The concrete subclass represented by a particular row is identified by the value of a type discriminator column. You don’t have to do anything special in Code First to enable TPH. It's the default inheritance mapping strategy: This mapping strategy is a winner in terms of both performance and simplicity. It’s the best-performing way to represent polymorphism—both polymorphic and nonpolymorphic queries perform well—and it’s even easy to implement by hand. Ad-hoc reporting is possible without complex joins or unions. Schema evolution is straightforward. Discriminator Column As you can see in the DB schema above, Code First has to add a special column to distinguish between persistent classes: the discriminator. This isn’t a property of the persistent class in our object model; it’s used internally by EF Code First. By default, the column name is "Discriminator", and its type is string. The values defaults to the persistent class names —in this case, “BankAccount” or “CreditCard”. EF Code First automatically sets and retrieves the discriminator values. TPH Requires Properties in SubClasses to be Nullable in the Database TPH has one major problem: Columns for properties declared by subclasses will be nullable in the database. For example, Code First created an (INT, NULL) column to map CardType property in CreditCard class. However, in a typical mapping scenario, Code First always creates an (INT, NOT NULL) column in the database for an int property in persistent class. But in this case, since BankAccount instance won’t have a CardType property, the CardType field must be NULL for that row so Code First creates an (INT, NULL) instead. If your subclasses each define several non-nullable properties, the loss of NOT NULL constraints may be a serious problem from the point of view of data integrity. TPH Violates the Third Normal FormAnother important issue is normalization. We’ve created functional dependencies between nonkey columns, violating the third normal form. Basically, the value of Discriminator column determines the corresponding values of the columns that belong to the subclasses (e.g. BankName) but Discriminator is not part of the primary key for the table. As always, denormalization for performance can be misleading, because it sacrifices long-term stability, maintainability, and the integrity of data for immediate gains that may be also achieved by proper optimization of the SQL execution plans (in other words, ask your DBA). Generated SQL QueryLet's take a look at the SQL statements that EF Code First sends to the database when we write queries in LINQ to Entities or EntitySQL. For example, the polymorphic query for BillingDetails that you saw, generates the following SQL statement: SELECT  [Extent1].[Discriminator] AS [Discriminator],  [Extent1].[BillingDetailId] AS [BillingDetailId],  [Extent1].[Owner] AS [Owner],  [Extent1].[Number] AS [Number],  [Extent1].[BankName] AS [BankName],  [Extent1].[Swift] AS [Swift],  [Extent1].[CardType] AS [CardType],  [Extent1].[ExpiryMonth] AS [ExpiryMonth],  [Extent1].[ExpiryYear] AS [ExpiryYear] FROM [dbo].[BillingDetails] AS [Extent1] WHERE [Extent1].[Discriminator] IN ('BankAccount','CreditCard') Or the non-polymorphic query for the BankAccount subclass generates this SQL statement: SELECT  [Extent1].[BillingDetailId] AS [BillingDetailId],  [Extent1].[Owner] AS [Owner],  [Extent1].[Number] AS [Number],  [Extent1].[BankName] AS [BankName],  [Extent1].[Swift] AS [Swift] FROM [dbo].[BillingDetails] AS [Extent1] WHERE [Extent1].[Discriminator] = 'BankAccount' Note how Code First adds a restriction on the discriminator column and also how it only selects those columns that belong to BankAccount entity. Change Discriminator Column Data Type and Values With Fluent API Sometimes, especially in legacy schemas, you need to override the conventions for the discriminator column so that Code First can work with the schema. The following fluent API code will change the discriminator column name to "BillingDetailType" and the values to "BA" and "CC" for BankAccount and CreditCard respectively: protected override void OnModelCreating(System.Data.Entity.ModelConfiguration.ModelBuilder modelBuilder) {     modelBuilder.Entity<BillingDetail>()                 .Map<BankAccount>(m => m.Requires("BillingDetailType").HasValue("BA"))                 .Map<CreditCard>(m => m.Requires("BillingDetailType").HasValue("CC")); } Also, changing the data type of discriminator column is interesting. In the above code, we passed strings to HasValue method but this method has been defined to accepts a type of object: public void HasValue(object value); Therefore, if for example we pass a value of type int to it then Code First not only use our desired values (i.e. 1 & 2) in the discriminator column but also changes the column type to be (INT, NOT NULL): modelBuilder.Entity<BillingDetail>()             .Map<BankAccount>(m => m.Requires("BillingDetailType").HasValue(1))             .Map<CreditCard>(m => m.Requires("BillingDetailType").HasValue(2)); SummaryIn this post we learned about Table per Hierarchy as the default mapping strategy in Code First. The disadvantages of the TPH strategy may be too serious for your design—after all, denormalized schemas can become a major burden in the long run. Your DBA may not like it at all. In the next post, we will learn about Table per Type (TPT) strategy that doesn’t expose you to this problem. • Real Time BI in the Real World

I plan to share some of those stories in a future blog.  In this post however, I want to share some far more common real time analytics use case scenarios that are being addressed with widely deployed Oracle BI and data integration technologies Not all real time BI applications require continuous learning, predictive modeling, and data mining.  Many simply require the ability to integrate, aggregate, and access information that is current (typically within in few minutes or a few seconds).  The use cases are infinite.  A few I've seen: ·         Purchasing agents need to match demand against available inventory ·         Manufacturing planners need to monitor current parts and material against scheduled build plans ·         Airline agents need to match ticket demand against flight schedules, ·         Human resources managers need to track the status of global hiring requisitions against current headcount authorizations...you get the idea. One way of doing this is to run reports or federated queries directly against transactional systems.  That approach can be viable if you only need to access simple data sets on rare occasions.  High volume and complex queries can quickly bog down performance of mission critical transactional systems.  There is an architecturally simple way of solving the problem, and it's being applied by real companies around the world to solve real needs in real time.    Cbeyond is an Atlanta, GA based  provider of voice, data and mobile business applications delivers.  They deliver real time information to its call center agents  as they are interacting with their customers. The data they need resides in production CRM and other transactional systems, but  instead or reporting directly off the those systems, data is first moved to an operational data store (ODS).  Rather than running data intensive, time consuming, and performance degrading batch ETL routines to populate the ODS, Cbeyond uses Oracle Golden Gate software to incrementally capture and move only the changed records from log files of the transactional systems every few minutes.  There is no impact on transactional system performance, and the information needed by call center representatives is up to date.  Oracle Business Intelligence software presents the information to services reps in a rich, visual, and highly interactive format. Avea is similar to Cbeyond.  They are a telecommunications company who integrates billing and customer information in an ODS that is accessed by their call center agents in real time using Oracle Golden Gate and Oracle Business Intelligence.  They've taken it a step further by using the ODS to feed a data warehouse.  The operational data store provides the current information needed by call center agents during "in flight" customer interactions.  The data warehouse is used for more sophisticated analysis of historical data.  For maximum performance, both the ODS and data warehouse run on the Oracle Exadata Database Machine. These are practical illustrations of companies addressing real time reporting and analysis needs using established business intelligence/data warehousing methodologies and tools common to many IT departments.  If real time BI could benefit your organization, you may be already be closer than you thought to having the pieces in place to solving the problem.    Give us a shout if you are interested in learning more or if you have an interesting use or approach to real-time BI.

  • How to let short content pages reach the bottom of the browser window and then a footer should appea

    - by UXdesigner
    In this case, I've developed a CSS code for this web application ..and sometimes the resulting data is too small and the footer of the site appears in the middle of the page and looks odd. I'd like to push that whitespace of the background to the browser's bottom and then followed by a footer. AND if the page is long, that text won't get overlapped by the footer. Can someone help me out with this code right here? I've been trying to use some of the codes I found on this page:http://matthewjamestaylor.com/blog/keeping-footers-at-the-bottom-of-the-page which talks about pretty much the same issue, but I can't get it completely done: What am I doing wrong ? @charset "utf-8"; body { margin: 0; padding: 0; text-align: center; height:100%; position: relative; height:100%; /* needed for container min-height */ } .spacer { clear: both; height: 0; margin: 0; padding: 0; font-size: 0.1em; } .spacer_left { clear: left; margin: 0 0 10px 0; padding: 0; font-size: 0.1em; } hr { height: 1px; margin: 20px 0 20px 0; border: 0; color: #ccc; background: #ccc; } #container { position:relative; /* needed for footer positioning*/ height:auto !important; /* real browsers */ height:100%; /* IE6: treaded as min-height*/ min-height:100%; /* real browsers */ width: 1160px; /* width of the site ! */ margin: 0 auto; padding: 0; border: 1px solid #333; text-align: left; } /* Context Bar */ h1#contexto { background:url('../images/menubarbg2.png'); width:1160px; height:30px; position:relative; margin-top:10px; visibility: inherit; font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size:12px; } #header { margin: 0; padding: 5px; height:70px; } h1#titulo { margin: 0; padding: 0 0 0; } #content { margin: -15px 20px 0 20px; /*padding: -6px 5px 20px 5px;*/ padding:1em 1em 5em; /* bottom padding for footer */ } div#content.columns { margin-left: 100px; } #content abbr, #content acronym { cursor: help; border-bottom: 1px dotted; } #content ul { list-style-type: square; } #content ul li, #content ol li { margin: 0 0 0.4em 0; padding: 0; } #content blockquote { width: 75%; margin: 0 auto; padding: 20px; } #footer { margin: 0; height: -30px; padding: 5px; clear: both; bottom:0; position:relative; } UPDATE: THE SOLUTION @charset "utf-8"; body, html { margin: 0; padding: 0; text-align: center; position: relative; height:100%; /* needed for footer positioning*/ } .spacer { clear: both; height: 0; margin: 0; padding: 0; font-size: 0.1em; } .spacer_left { clear: left; margin: 0 0 10px 0; padding: 0; font-size: 0.1em; } hr { height: 1px; margin: 20px 0 20px 0; border: 0; color: #ccc; background: #ccc; } #container { position:relative; /* needed for footer positioning*/ min-height: 100%;/* needed for footer positioning*/ height: auto !important;/* needed for footer positioning*/ height: 100%;/* needed for footer positioning*/ margin: 0 auto -30px;/* needed for footer positioning*/ width: 1160px; padding: 0; border: 1px solid #333; text-align: left; } #header { margin: 0; padding: 5px; height:70px; } h1#titulo { margin: 0; padding: 0 0 0; } h1#contexto { background:url('../images/menubarbg2.png'); width:1160px; height:30px; position:relative; margin-top:10px; visibility: inherit; font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size:12px; } #content { margin: -15px 20px 30px 20px; /* needed for footer positioning*/ } div#content.columns { margin-left: 100px; } #content abbr, #content acronym { cursor: help; border-bottom: 1px dotted; } #content ul { list-style-type: square; } #content ul li, #content ol li { margin: 0 0 0.4em 0; padding: 0; } #content blockquote { width: 75%; margin: 0 auto; padding: 20px; } #footer, .push /* needed for footer positioning*/ { padding: 5px; clear: both; position:absolute;/* needed for footer positioning*/ bottom:0;/* needed for footer positioning*/ height: -30px;/* needed for footer positioning*/ width:1150px; }

  • CSS layout problem on Firefox with filling space between end of left column and footer

    - by Jean
    Basically, the left column is supposed to extend to the footer with the continuous red color. However, in Firefox on pages with lots of text, the column does not extend to the footer and leaves a large white gap--see site: http://library.luhs.org/JHSII/about.html I've tried readjusting the heights, creating the sticky footer, and other things I've read about on this site. So I admit that I'm stumped, and what's really odd is that the layout seems to work in IE as there is no white space! I didn't create the site, but I recently inherited it and trying to work through the mess Any help is much appreciated, here's the CSS #html,body{ margin:0; padding:0; border:0; height:100%; } #body{ background:#ffffff; min-width:965px; text-align:center; width: 600px; font: Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; } #.style7{ clear:both; height:1px; overflow:hidden; line-height:1%; font-size:0px; margin-bottom:-1px; } #fullheightcontainer{ margin-left:auto; margin-right:auto; text-align:left; position:relative; width:965px; height:100%; } #wrapper{ min-height:100%; height:100%; background:#660000; background-color: #660000; background-repeat: repeat; } #wrapp\65 r{ height:auto; } # html wrapper{ height:100%; } #outer{ z-index:1; position:relative; margin-left:150px; width:815px; background:#FFFFFF; height:100%; background-color: #FFFFFF; } #left{ width:151px; float:left; display:inline; position:relative; margin-left:-150px; } padding: 20px; border: 0; margin: 0 0 0 240px *>html #left{width:150px;} #container-left{ width:150px; color: #CCCCCC; } * html #left{margin-right:-3px;} #center{ width:800px; float:right; display:inline; margin-left:-1px; } #clearheadercenter{ height:125px; overflow:hidden; } #clearfootercenter{ height:50px; overflow:hidden; } #footer{ z-index:1; position:relative; clear: both; width:965px; height:50px; overflow:hidden; margin-top:-50px; background-color: #660000; } #subfooter1{ background:#FFFFCC; text-align:left; margin-left:150px; height:50px; } #header{ z-index:1; position:absolute; top:0px; width:815px; margin-left:150px; height:100px; overflow:hidden; background-color: #660000; } #subheader1{ background:#FFFFCC; text-align:center; height:70px; } #gfx_bg_middle{ top:0px; position:absolute; height:100%; overflow:hidden; width:815px; margin-left:150px; background:#FFFFFF; } # html #gfx_bg_middle{ display:none; } #floatingnav { margin: 5px 10px 5px 5px; padding: 0px 5px 5px; float: right; font: .75em/1.35em Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; height: 600px; width: 300px; } #floatingnav a { color: #630; } #floatingnav ul { margin-top: -5; } #.floatright { float: right; margin: 0 0 10px 10px; border: 1px solid #666; padding: 2px; } #outer{ word-wrap:break-word; } #table.s1 { border-width: medium; border-spacing: 2px; border-style: none; border-color: rgb(85, 0, 0); border-collapse: collapse; background-color: white; } #table.s1 th { border-width: medium; padding: 2px; border-style: groove; border-color: red; background-color: white; -moz-border-radius: 0px 0px 0px 0px; } #table.s1 td { border-width: medium; padding: 2px; border-style: groove; border-color: #660000; background-color: #FFFFFF; -moz-border-radius: 0px 0px 0px 0px; } #a:link { color: #000066; } #a:visited { color: #000066; } #p.sample { font-family: serif; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: medium; line-height: 100%; word-spacing: normal; letter-spacing: normal; text-decoration: none; text-transform: none; text-align: left; text-indent: 0ex; }

  • Ajax Tabs implementation problem .

    - by SmartDev
    Hi , I have Implement ajax tabs and i have four tabs in it . • jQuery CSS Custom Flyout Menu Styling Issue

    - by aherrick
    I'm close to nailing this flyout menu I have been working on, just have a couple of current pain points. I'm trying to get left/right padding on my submenu items, as you can see I am not quite there. Also when the first submenu is displayed, I want to create a bit of a gap between the first row of list items and the child. Below is my current code and a screen shot displaying what I want. Based on my current CSS, any thoughts on how to get this done in a clean way? <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8" /> <title></title> <script type="text/javascript" src="http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.4.2/jquery.min.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> function mainmenu() { $("#nav ul").css({ display: "none" }); // Opera Fix $("#nav li").hover(function() { $(this).find('ul:first').css({ visibility: "visible", display: "none" }).show(400); }, function() { $(this).find('ul:first').css({ visibility: "hidden" }); }); } $(document).ready(function() { mainmenu(); }); </script> <style type="text/css"> * { padding: 0px; margin: 0px; } body { font-size: 0.85em; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; } #nav, #nav ul { margin: 0; padding: 0; list-style-type: none; list-style-position: outside; position: relative; } #nav a { display: block; padding: 4px 0px 4px 0px; color: #dfca90; text-decoration: none; background-color: #ECE9D8; font-size: 9px; font-weight: bold; font: bold 15px Palatino, 'Palatino Linotype' , Georgia, serif; } #nav > li > a { font-size: 16px; font-variant: small-caps; border-right: 1px solid #dfca90; padding-right: 10px; padding-left: 10px; padding-bottom: 6px; padding-top: 6px; background-color: #fff; color: #dfca90; } #nav li ul li a:hover { color: #999; } #nav li { float: left; position: relative; } #nav ul { position: absolute; display: none; width: 170px; border: 2px solid #dfca90; } #nav ul li { } #nav li ul a { width: 170px; height: auto; float: left; } #nav ul ul { top: -2px; } #nav li ul ul { left: 170px; background-color: #ECE9D8; } #nav li:hover ul ul, #nav li:hover ul ul ul, #nav li:hover ul ul ul ul { display: none; } #nav li:hover ul, #nav li li:hover ul, #nav li li li:hover ul, #nav li li li li:hover ul { display: block; } </style> </head> <body> <ul id="nav"> <li><a href="#">1 HTML</a></li> <li><a href="#">2 CSS</a></li> <li><a href="#">3 Javascript </a> <ul> <li><a href="#">3.1 jQuery</a> <ul> <li><a href="#">3.1.1 Download</a> </li> <li><a href="#">3.1.2 Tutorial</a> </li> </ul> </li> <li><a href="#">3.2 Mootools</a></li> <li><a href="#">3.3 Prototype</a></li> </ul> </li> </ul> </body> </html>

  • Opacity in CSS, some doubts

    Hi, I have some doubts with opacity in CSS. I have a Header and a Footer that uses opacity, but I would like to turn off opacity the opacity in the text. Is that possible? To a better understanding I will post the code. <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en"> <head> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8" /> <title> stu nicholls | CSS PLaY | cross browser fixed header/footer layout basic method </title> <style type="text/css" media="screen"> #printhead {display:none;} html { height:100%; max-height:100%; padding:0; margin:0; border:0; background:#fff; font-size:80%; font-family: "trebuchet ms", tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; /* hide overflow:hidden from IE5/Mac */ /* \*/ overflow: hidden; /* */ } body {height:100%; max-height:100%; overflow:hidden; padding:0; margin:0; border:0;} #content {display:block; height:100%; max-height:100%; overflow:hidden; padding-left:0px; position:relative; z-index:3; word-wrap:break-word;} #head {position:absolute; margin:0; top:0; right:18px; display:block; width:100%; height:1; background-color:transparent; font-size:1em; z-index:5; color:#000; border-bottom:1px solid #000;} #foot {position:absolute; margin:0; bottom:-1px; right:18px; display:block; width:100%; height:30px; background-color:transparent; color:#000; text-align:right; font-size:2em; z-index:4; border-top:1px solid #000;} .pad1 {display:block; width:18px; height:18px; float:left;} /* Com este "height", alinho a border do header */ .pad2 {display:block; height:100px;} .pad3 {display:block; height:0px;} /* Com este "height" controlo onde começa o content e o scroll do browser */ #content p {padding:5px;} .bold {font-size:1.2em; font-weight:bold;} .red {color:#c00; margin-left:5px; font-family:"trebuchet ms", "trebuchet", "verdana", sans-serif;} h2 {margin-left:5px;} h3 {margin-left:5px;} /* Esta classe controla as caracteristicas do background do footer e do header. */ .bkg { background-color: blue; filter:alpha(opacity=35); /* IE's opacity*/ opacity: 0.35; height: 10; } iframe { border-style: none; width: 100%; height: 100%; } </style> </head> <body> <div id="head"> <div class="bkg"> <div class="pad1"></div>Header </div> </div> <div id="content"> <div class="pad3"></div> <iframe src="http://www.yahoo.com" id="iFrame"></iframe> <div class="pad2"></div> </div> </div> <div id="foot"><div class="bkg">Footer</div></div> </body> </html> I want to maintain the opacity in the blue color in the footer and header but I would like to put the text stronger.   • Unable to Calculate Position within Owner-Draw Text

    - by Jonathan Wood
    I'm trying to use Visual Studio 2012 to create a Windows Forms application that can place the caret at the current position within a owner-drawn string. However, I've been unable to find a way to accurately calculate that position. I've done this successfully before in C++. I've now tried numerous methods in C#. Originally, I tried using .NET classes to determine the correct position, but then I tried accessing the Windows API directly. In some cases, I came close, but after some time I still cannot place the caret accurately. I've created a small test program and posted key parts below. I've also posted the entire project here. The exact font used is not important to me; however, my application assumes a mono-spaced font. Any help is appreciated. Form1.cs This is my main form. public partial class Form1 : Form { private string TestString; private int AveCharWidth; private int Position; public Form1() { InitializeComponent(); TestString = "123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890"; AveCharWidth = GetFontWidth(); Position = 0; } private void Form1_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { Font = new Font(FontFamily.GenericMonospace, 12, FontStyle.Regular, GraphicsUnit.Pixel); } protected override void OnGotFocus(EventArgs e) { Windows.CreateCaret(Handle, (IntPtr)0, 2, (int)Font.Height); Windows.ShowCaret(Handle); UpdateCaretPosition(); base.OnGotFocus(e); } protected void UpdateCaretPosition() { Windows.SetCaretPos(Padding.Left + (Position * AveCharWidth), Padding.Top); } protected override void OnLostFocus(EventArgs e) { Windows.HideCaret(Handle); Windows.DestroyCaret(); base.OnLostFocus(e); } protected override void OnPaint(PaintEventArgs e) { e.Graphics.DrawString(TestString, Font, SystemBrushes.WindowText, new PointF(Padding.Left, Padding.Top)); } protected override bool IsInputKey(Keys keyData) { switch (keyData) { case Keys.Right: case Keys.Left: return true; } return base.IsInputKey(keyData); } protected override void OnKeyDown(KeyEventArgs e) { switch (e.KeyCode) { case Keys.Left: Position = Math.Max(Position - 1, 0); UpdateCaretPosition(); break; case Keys.Right: Position = Math.Min(Position + 1, TestString.Length); UpdateCaretPosition(); break; } base.OnKeyDown(e); } protected int GetFontWidth() { int AverageCharWidth = 0; using (var graphics = this.CreateGraphics()) { try { Windows.TEXTMETRIC tm; var hdc = graphics.GetHdc(); IntPtr hFont = this.Font.ToHfont(); IntPtr hOldFont = Windows.SelectObject(hdc, hFont); var a = Windows.GetTextMetrics(hdc, out tm); var b = Windows.SelectObject(hdc, hOldFont); var c = Windows.DeleteObject(hFont); AverageCharWidth = tm.tmAveCharWidth; } catch { } finally { graphics.ReleaseHdc(); } } return AverageCharWidth; } } Windows.cs Here are my Windows API declarations. public static class Windows { [Serializable, StructLayout(LayoutKind.Sequential, CharSet = CharSet.Auto)] public struct TEXTMETRIC { public int tmHeight; public int tmAscent; public int tmDescent; public int tmInternalLeading; public int tmExternalLeading; public int tmAveCharWidth; public int tmMaxCharWidth; public int tmWeight; public int tmOverhang; public int tmDigitizedAspectX; public int tmDigitizedAspectY; public short tmFirstChar; public short tmLastChar; public short tmDefaultChar; public short tmBreakChar; public byte tmItalic; public byte tmUnderlined; public byte tmStruckOut; public byte tmPitchAndFamily; public byte tmCharSet; } [DllImport("user32.dll")] public static extern bool CreateCaret(IntPtr hWnd, IntPtr hBitmap, int nWidth, int nHeight); [DllImport("User32.dll")] public static extern bool SetCaretPos(int x, int y); [DllImport("User32.dll")] public static extern bool DestroyCaret(); [DllImport("User32.dll")] public static extern bool ShowCaret(IntPtr hWnd); [DllImport("User32.dll")] public static extern bool HideCaret(IntPtr hWnd); [DllImport("gdi32.dll", CharSet = CharSet.Auto)] public static extern bool GetTextMetrics(IntPtr hdc, out TEXTMETRIC lptm); [DllImport("gdi32.dll")] public static extern IntPtr SelectObject(IntPtr hdc, IntPtr hgdiobj); [DllImport("GDI32.dll")] public static extern bool DeleteObject(IntPtr hObject); }

    two questions: --1-- it displays all the number of pages. but i'd like it to display as: << Prev . . 3 4 [5] 6 7 . . In this post we will take three simple use cases and see how those basic components come together to create a complete SDN solution in OpenStack. With those three use cases we will review almost the entire network setup and see how all the pieces work together. The use cases we will use are: 1.       Create network – what happens when we create network and how can we create multiple isolated networks 2.       Launch a VM – once we have networks we can launch VMs and connect them to networks. 3.       DHCP request from a VM – OpenStack can automatically assign IP addresses to VMs. This is done through local DHCP service controlled by OpenStack Neutron. We will see how this service runs and how does a DHCP request and response look like. In this post we will show connectivity, we will see how packets get from point A to point B. We first focus on how a configured deployment looks like and only later we will discuss how and when the configuration is created. Personally I found it very valuable to see the actual interfaces and how they connect to each other through examples and hands on experiments. After the end game is clear and we know how the connectivity works, in a later post, we will take a step back and explain how Neutron configures the components to be able to provide such connectivity.  We are going to get pretty technical shortly and I recommend trying these examples on your own deployment or using the Oracle OpenStack Tech Preview. Understanding these three use cases thoroughly and how to look at them will be very helpful when trying to debug a deployment in case something does not work. Use case #1: Create Network Create network is a simple operation it can be performed from the GUI or command line. When we create a network in OpenStack the network is only available to the tenant who created it or it could be defined as “shared” and then it can be used by all tenants. A network can have multiple subnets but for this demonstration purpose and for simplicity we will assume that each network has exactly one subnet. Creating a network from the command line will look like this: # neutron net-create net1 Created a new network: +---------------------------+--------------------------------------+ | Field                     | Value                                | +---------------------------+--------------------------------------+ | admin_state_up            | True                                 | | id                        | 5f833617-6179-4797-b7c0-7d420d84040c | | name                      | net1                                 | | provider:network_type     | vlan                                 | | provider:physical_network | default                              | | provider:segmentation_id  | 1000                                 | | shared                    | False                                | | status                    | ACTIVE                               | | subnets                   |                                      | | tenant_id                 | 9796e5145ee546508939cd49ad59d51f     | +---------------------------+--------------------------------------+ Creating a subnet for this network will look like this: # neutron subnet-create net1 10.10.10.0/24 Created a new subnet: +------------------+------------------------------------------------+ | Field            | Value                                          | +------------------+------------------------------------------------+ | allocation_pools | {"start": "10.10.10.2", "end": "10.10.10.254"} | | cidr             | 10.10.10.0/24                                  | | dns_nameservers  |                                                | | enable_dhcp      | True                                           | | gateway_ip       | 10.10.10.1                                     | | host_routes      |                                                | | id               | 2d7a0a58-0674-439a-ad23-d6471aaae9bc           | | ip_version       | 4                                              | | name             |                                                | | network_id       | 5f833617-6179-4797-b7c0-7d420d84040c           | | tenant_id        | 9796e5145ee546508939cd49ad59d51f               | +------------------+------------------------------------------------+ We now have a network and a subnet, on the network topology view this looks like this: Now let’s dive in and see what happened under the hood. Looking at the control node we will discover that a new namespace was created: # ip netns list qdhcp-5f833617-6179-4797-b7c0-7d420d84040c   The name of the namespace is qdhcp-<network id> (see above), let’s look into the namespace and see what’s in it: # ip netns exec qdhcp-5f833617-6179-4797-b7c0-7d420d84040c ip addr 1: lo: <LOOPBACK,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 65536 qdisc noqueue state UNKNOWN     link/loopback 00:00:00:00:00:00 brd 00:00:00:00:00:00     inet 127.0.0.1/8 scope host lo     inet6 ::1/128 scope host        valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever 12: tap26c9b807-7c: <BROADCAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc noqueue state UNKNOWN     link/ether fa:16:3e:1d:5c:81 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff     inet 10.10.10.3/24 brd 10.10.10.255 scope global tap26c9b807-7c     inet6 fe80::f816:3eff:fe1d:5c81/64 scope link        valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever   We see two interfaces in the namespace, one is the loopback and the other one is an interface called “tap26c9b807-7c”. This interface has the IP address of 10.10.10.3 and it will also serve dhcp requests in a way we will see later. Let’s trace the connectivity of the “tap26c9b807-7c” interface from the namespace.  First stop is OVS, we see that the interface connects to bridge  “br-int” on OVS: # ovs-vsctl show 8a069c7c-ea05-4375-93e2-b9fc9e4b3ca1     Bridge "br-eth2"         Port "br-eth2"             Interface "br-eth2"                 type: internal         Port "eth2"             Interface "eth2"         Port "phy-br-eth2"             Interface "phy-br-eth2"     Bridge br-ex         Port br-ex             Interface br-ex                 type: internal     Bridge br-int         Port "int-br-eth2"             Interface "int-br-eth2"         Port "tap26c9b807-7c"             tag: 1             Interface "tap26c9b807-7c"                 type: internal         Port br-int             Interface br-int                 type: internal     ovs_version: "1.11.0"   In the picture above we have a veth pair which has two ends called “int-br-eth2” and "phy-br-eth2", this veth pair is used to connect two bridge in OVS "br-eth2" and "br-int". In the previous post we explained how to check the veth connectivity using the ethtool command. It shows that the two are indeed a pair: # ethtool -S int-br-eth2 NIC statistics:      peer_ifindex: 10 . .   #ip link . . 10: phy-br-eth2: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast state UP qlen 1000 . . Note that “phy-br-eth2” is connected to a bridge called "br-eth2" and one of this bridge's interfaces is the physical link eth2. This means that the network which we have just created has created a namespace which is connected to the physical interface eth2. eth2 is the “VM network” the physical interface where all the virtual machines connect to where all the VMs are connected. About network isolation: OpenStack supports creation of multiple isolated networks and can use several mechanisms to isolate the networks from one another. The isolation mechanism can be VLANs, VxLANs or GRE tunnels, this is configured as part of the initial setup in our deployment we use VLANs. When using VLAN tagging as an isolation mechanism a VLAN tag is allocated by Neutron from a pre-defined VLAN tags pool and assigned to the newly created network. By provisioning VLAN tags to the networks Neutron allows creation of multiple isolated networks on the same physical link.  The big difference between this and other platforms is that the user does not have to deal with allocating and managing VLANs to networks. The VLAN allocation and provisioning is handled by Neutron which keeps track of the VLAN tags, and responsible for allocating and reclaiming VLAN tags. In the example above net1 has the VLAN tag 1000, this means that whenever a VM is created and connected to this network the packets from that VM will have to be tagged with VLAN tag 1000 to go on this particular network. This is true for namespace as well, if we would like to connect a namespace to a particular network we have to make sure that the packets to and from the namespace are correctly tagged when they reach the VM network. In the example above we see that the namespace interface “tap26c9b807-7c” has vlan tag 1 assigned to it, if we examine OVS we see that it has flows which modify VLAN tag 1 to VLAN tag 1000 when a packet goes to the VM network on eth2 and vice versa. We can see this using the dump-flows command on OVS for packets going to the VM network we see the modification done on br-eth2: #  ovs-ofctl dump-flows br-eth2 NXST_FLOW reply (xid=0x4):  cookie=0x0, duration=18669.401s, table=0, n_packets=857, n_bytes=163350, idle_age=25, priority=4,in_port=2,dl_vlan=1 actions=mod_vlan_vid:1000,NORMAL  cookie=0x0, duration=165108.226s, table=0, n_packets=14, n_bytes=1000, idle_age=5343, hard_age=65534, priority=2,in_port=2 actions=drop  cookie=0x0, duration=165109.813s, table=0, n_packets=1671, n_bytes=213304, idle_age=25, hard_age=65534, priority=1 actions=NORMAL   For packets coming from the interface to the namespace we see the following modification: #  ovs-ofctl dump-flows br-int NXST_FLOW reply (xid=0x4):  cookie=0x0, duration=18690.876s, table=0, n_packets=1610, n_bytes=210752, idle_age=1, priority=3,in_port=1,dl_vlan=1000 actions=mod_vlan_vid:1,NORMAL  cookie=0x0, duration=165130.01s, table=0, n_packets=75, n_bytes=3686, idle_age=4212, hard_age=65534, priority=2,in_port=1 actions=drop  cookie=0x0, duration=165131.96s, table=0, n_packets=863, n_bytes=160727, idle_age=1, hard_age=65534, priority=1 actions=NORMAL   To summarize we can see that when a user creates a network Neutron creates a namespace and this namespace is connected through OVS to the “VM network”. OVS also takes care of tagging the packets from the namespace to the VM network with the correct VLAN tag and knows to modify the VLAN for packets coming from VM network to the namespace. Now let’s see what happens when a VM is launched and how it is connected to the “VM network”. Use case #2: Launch a VM Launching a VM can be done from Horizon or from the command line this is how we do it from Horizon: Attach the network: And Launch Once the virtual machine is up and running we can see the associated IP using the nova list command : # nova list +--------------------------------------+--------------+--------+------------+-------------+-----------------+ | ID                                   | Name         | Status | Task State | Power State | Networks        | +--------------------------------------+--------------+--------+------------+-------------+-----------------+ | 3707ac87-4f5d-4349-b7ed-3a673f55e5e1 | Oracle Linux | ACTIVE | None       | Running     | net1=10.10.10.2 | +--------------------------------------+--------------+--------+------------+-------------+-----------------+ The nova list command shows us that the VM is running and that the IP 10.10.10.2 is assigned to this VM. Let’s trace the connectivity from the VM to VM network on eth2 starting with the VM definition file. The configuration files of the VM including the virtual disk(s), in case of ephemeral storage, are stored on the compute node at/var/lib/nova/instances/<instance-id>/. Looking into the VM definition file ,libvirt.xml,  we see that the VM is connected to an interface called “tap53903a95-82” which is connected to a Linux bridge called “qbr53903a95-82”: <interface type="bridge">       <mac address="fa:16:3e:fe:c7:87"/>       <source bridge="qbr53903a95-82"/>       <target dev="tap53903a95-82"/>     </interface>   Looking at the bridge using the brctl show command we see this: # brctl show bridge name     bridge id               STP enabled     interfaces qbr53903a95-82          8000.7e7f3282b836       no              qvb53903a95-82                                                         tap53903a95-82    The bridge has two interfaces, one connected to the VM (“tap53903a95-82 “) and another one ( “qvb53903a95-82”) connected to “br-int” bridge on OVS: # ovs-vsctl show 83c42f80-77e9-46c8-8560-7697d76de51c     Bridge "br-eth2"         Port "br-eth2"             Interface "br-eth2"                 type: internal         Port "eth2"             Interface "eth2"         Port "phy-br-eth2"             Interface "phy-br-eth2"     Bridge br-int         Port br-int             Interface br-int                 type: internal         Port "int-br-eth2"             Interface "int-br-eth2"         Port "qvo53903a95-82"             tag: 3             Interface "qvo53903a95-82"     ovs_version: "1.11.0"   As we showed earlier “br-int” is connected to “br-eth2” on OVS using the veth pair int-br-eth2,phy-br-eth2 and br-eth2 is connected to the physical interface eth2. The whole flow end to end looks like this: VM è tap53903a95-82 (virtual interface)è qbr53903a95-82 (Linux bridge) è qvb53903a95-82 (interface connected from Linux bridge to OVS bridge br-int) è int-br-eth2 (veth one end) è phy-br-eth2 (veth the other end) è eth2 physical interface. The purpose of the Linux Bridge connecting to the VM is to allow security group enforcement with iptables. Security groups are enforced at the edge point which are the interface of the VM, since iptables nnot be applied to OVS bridges we use Linux bridge to apply them. In the future we hope to see this Linux Bridge going away rules.  VLAN tags: As we discussed in the first use case net1 is using VLAN tag 1000, looking at OVS above we see that qvo41f1ebcf-7c is tagged with VLAN tag 3. The modification from VLAN tag 3 to 1000 as we go to the physical network is done by OVS  as part of the packet flow of br-eth2 in the same way we showed before. To summarize, when a VM is launched it is connected to the VM network through a chain of elements as described here. During the packet from VM to the network and back the VLAN tag is modified. Use case #3: Serving a DHCP request coming from the virtual machine In the previous use cases we have shown that both the namespace called dhcp-<some id> and the VM end up connecting to the physical interface eth2  on their respective nodes, both will tag their packets with VLAN tag 1000.We saw that the namespace has an interface with IP of 10.10.10.3. Since the VM and the namespace are connected to each other and have interfaces on the same subnet they can ping each other, in this picture we see a ping from the VM which was assigned 10.10.10.2 to the namespace: The fact that they are connected and can ping each other can become very handy when something doesn’t work right and we need to isolate the problem. In such case knowing that we should be able to ping from the VM to the namespace and back can be used to trace the disconnect using tcpdump or other monitoring tools. To serve DHCP requests coming from VMs on the network Neutron uses a Linux tool called “dnsmasq”,this is a lightweight DNS and DHCP service you can read more about it here. If we look at the dnsmasq on the control node with the ps command we see this: dnsmasq --no-hosts --no-resolv --strict-order --bind-interfaces --interface=tap26c9b807-7c --except-interface=lo --pid-file=/var/lib/neutron/dhcp/5f833617-6179-4797-b7c0-7d420d84040c/pid --dhcp-hostsfile=/var/lib/neutron/dhcp/5f833617-6179-4797-b7c0-7d420d84040c/host --dhcp-optsfile=/var/lib/neutron/dhcp/5f833617-6179-4797-b7c0-7d420d84040c/opts --leasefile-ro --dhcp-range=tag0,10.10.10.0,static,120s --dhcp-lease-max=256 --conf-file= --domain=openstacklocal The service connects to the tap interface in the namespace (“--interface=tap26c9b807-7c”), If we look at the hosts file we see this: # cat  /var/lib/neutron/dhcp/5f833617-6179-4797-b7c0-7d420d84040c/host fa:16:3e:fe:c7:87,host-10-10-10-2.openstacklocal,10.10.10.2   If you look at the console output above you can see the MAC address fa:16:3e:fe:c7:87 which is the VM MAC. This MAC address is mapped to IP 10.10.10.2 and so when a DHCP request comes with this MAC dnsmasq will return the 10.10.10.2.If we look into the namespace at the time we initiate a DHCP request from the VM (this can be done by simply restarting the network service in the VM) we see the following: # ip netns exec qdhcp-5f833617-6179-4797-b7c0-7d420d84040c tcpdump -n 19:27:12.191280 IP 0.0.0.0.bootpc > 255.255.255.255.bootps: BOOTP/DHCP, Request from fa:16:3e:fe:c7:87, length 310 19:27:12.191666 IP 10.10.10.3.bootps > 10.10.10.2.bootpc: BOOTP/DHCP, Reply, length 325   To summarize, the DHCP service is handled by dnsmasq which is configured by Neutron to listen to the interface in the DHCP namespace. Neutron also configures dnsmasq with the combination of MAC and IP so when a DHCP request comes along it will receive the assigned IP. Summary In this post we relied on the components described in the previous post and saw how network connectivity is achieved using three simple use cases. These use cases gave a good view of the entire network stack and helped understand how an end to end connection is being made between a VM on a compute node and the DHCP namespace on the control node. One conclusion we can draw from what we saw here is that if we launch a VM and it is able to perform a DHCP request and receive a correct IP then there is reason to believe that the network is working as expected. We saw that a packet has to travel through a long list of components before reaching its destination and if it has done so successfully this means that many components are functioning properly. In the next post we will look at some more sophisticated services Neutron supports and see how they work. We will see that while there are some more components involved for the most part the concepts are the same. @RonenKofman

  • Getting this CSS to work in IE6

    - by jerrygarciuh
    Hi folks, Working on this page: http://www.karlsenner.dreamhosters.com/about.php and having trouble with the navigation in IE6. It validates as XHTML 1.0 Transitional. Works great in FF, IE 8, Chrome, and Windows Safari. In IE6 and Opera 10 the drop menus appear too high. I tried adding in the different versions of http://code.google.com/p/ie7-js/ but it did not solve the issue in IE. The CSS looks like this: #wrapper { position: relative; display: block; background-color: inherit; margin: 0px auto; padding: 0; width: 900px; min-height: 900px; } #nav {} .navImage { position:relative; display:inline; height:102px; /* added in hopes of helping IE position but no dice */ } .subMenu { position:absolute; z-index:10; background-color:#FFF; top: 14px; left:0; } .subMenu a:link, .subMenu a:visited, .subMenu a:active{ display:block; width:90%; padding:6px; margin:0; color:#3CF; font-family:Tahoma, Geneva, sans-serif; font-size:14px; text-decoration:none; font-weight:bold; } .subMenu a:hover{ display:block; width:90%; padding:6px; margin:0; color:#3CF; background-color:#CCC; font-family:Tahoma, Geneva, sans-serif; font-size:14px; text-decoration:none; font-weight:bold; } jQuery rollovers: $('#navcompany').hover(function () { $('#companyMenu').css('display', 'block'); $('#companyImg').attr('src','g/nav/company_over.gif'); }, function () { $('#companyMenu').css('display', 'none'); $('#companyImg').attr('src','g/nav/company.gif'); }); And one of the cells. Since the menu is coming out of PHP and IE was not respecting the widths I just use PHP to get the nav image widths and write them to styles on the fly. Solved the width issue as IE acted like they should inherit their width from the wrapper. This may be a clue as to why they don't appear below their nav images but I can't sort it. <div id="navcompany" class="navImage" style="width:128px"> <a href="about.php"> <img src="g/nav/company_over.gif" name="companyImg" width="128" height="102" border="0" id="companyImg" alt="company" /> </a> <div id="companyMenu" class="subMenu" style="display:none; width:128px"> <a href="about.php">About us</a> <a href="location.php">Our location</a> </div> </div> Any advice greatly appreciated! • Antialias not working in ubuntu lucid lynx 10.04

    - by mac
    I have recently upgraded from karmic to lucid (plain ubuntu using gnome). Everything worked fine, but the characters now aren't anti-aliased any more, as you can appreciate from the screenshot: This is what I tried to fix the situation, unluckily without succeeding: Used the regular option pane from System-Preference-Appearance-Font (smoothing, hinting...) Edited the .fonts.conf file Disinstalling (and then re-installing) the mstcorefont package Changing the default Sans font to a font of my liking (e.g. Tahoma) from the abovementioned Appearance options My ubuntu installation is quite standard, with the typical add-ons one might wish for usability. I used the ubuntu start script to make a few tweaks. Thank you in advance for your help! :)

  • Terminal.app fonts broken on Mac Snow Leopard

    - by Fabio
    About an year ago I installed gnome fonts on my MacBook Pro and I use them for Terminal.app Today I was using Terminal with three windows open and suddenly the app has quit (I don't know if I accidentally pressed command+q) but when I reopened the application fonts looks strange. I had a screenshot taken before the accident I did the same screenshot now and here's the result I don't know what's happened, I tried to reinstall the fonts, restarted the computer, but with no luck. One more thing, I use an external screen, I read some posts regarding font issues with external monitors but I had this monitor before this accident and everything worked fine until now. Please help me to solve this because my eyes were used to that font and now it looks weird to see this different font

  • Drawing a TextBox in an extended Glass Frame w/o WPF

    - by Lazlo
    I am trying to draw a TextBox on the extended glass frame of my form. I won't describe this technique, it's well-known. Here's an example for those who haven't heard of it: http://www.danielmoth.com/Blog/Vista-Glass-In-C.aspx The thing is, it is complex to draw over this glass frame. Since black is considered to be the 0-alpha color, anything black disappears. There are apparently ways of countering this problem: drawing complex GDI+ shapes are not affected by this alpha-ness. For example, this code can be used to draw a Label on glass (note: GraphicsPath is used instead of DrawString in order to get around the horrible ClearType problem): public class GlassLabel : Control { public GlassLabel() { this.BackColor = Color.Black; } protected override void OnPaint(PaintEventArgs e) { GraphicsPath font = new GraphicsPath(); font.AddString( this.Text, this.Font.FontFamily, (int)this.Font.Style, this.Font.Size, Point.Empty, StringFormat.GenericDefault); e.Graphics.SmoothingMode = SmoothingMode.HighQuality; e.Graphics.FillPath(new SolidBrush(this.ForeColor), font); } } Similarly, such an approach can be used to create a container on the glass area. Note the use of the polygons instead of the rectangle - when using the rectangle, its black parts are considered as alpha. public class GlassPanel : Panel { public GlassPanel() { this.BackColor = Color.Black; } protected override void OnPaint(PaintEventArgs e) { Point[] area = new Point[] { new Point(0, 1), new Point(1, 0), new Point(this.Width - 2, 0), new Point(this.Width - 1, 1), new Point(this.Width -1, this.Height - 2), new Point(this.Width -2, this.Height-1), new Point(1, this.Height -1), new Point(0, this.Height - 2) }; Point[] inArea = new Point[] { new Point(1, 1), new Point(this.Width - 1, 1), new Point(this.Width - 1, this.Height - 1), new Point(this.Width - 1, this.Height - 1), new Point(1, this.Height - 1) }; e.Graphics.FillPolygon(new SolidBrush(Color.FromArgb(240, 240, 240)), inArea); e.Graphics.DrawPolygon(new Pen(Color.FromArgb(55, 0, 0, 0)), area); base.OnPaint(e); } } Now my problem is: How can I draw a TextBox? After lots of Googling, I came up with the following solutions: Subclassing the TextBox's OnPaint method. This is possible, although I could not get it to work properly. It should involve painting some magic things I don't know how to do yet. Making my own custom TextBox, perhaps on a TextBoxBase. If anyone has good, valid and working examples, and thinks this could be a good overall solution, please tell me. Using BufferedPaintSetAlpha. (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms649805.aspx). The downsides of this method may be that the corners of the textbox might look odd, but I can live with that. If anyone knows how to implement that method properly from a Graphics object, please tell me. I personally don't, but this seems the best solution so far. To be honest, I found a great C++ article, but I am way too lazy to convert it. http://weblogs.asp.net/kennykerr/archive/2007/01/23/controls-and-the-desktop-window-manager.aspx Note: If I ever succeed with the BufferedPaint methods, I swear to s/o that I will make a simple DLL with all the common Windows Forms controls drawable on glass.

  • Screen Scraping HTML with C#

    - by WildBill
    I have been given the task at work of screen scraping one of our legacy web apps to extract certain data from the code. The data is formatted and "should" be displayed exactly the same every time. I am just not sure how to go about doing this. It's a full html file with header and footer navigations but in the middle of all this is the data I need. I need to extract the Company Name value, Contact Name, Telephone, email address, etc. Here is an example of what the code looks like: ...html above here <br /><br /> <table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="12" border="0"> <tr> <td valign="top" align="center"> <!-- Company Info --> <table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" border="0"> <tr> <td class="black"> <table cellspacing="1" cellpadding="0" border="0" width="370"> <tr> <th>ABC INDUSTRIES</th> </tr> <tr> <td class="search"> <table cellpadding="5" cellspacing="0" border="0" width="100%"> <tr> <td> <table cellpadding="1" cellspacing="0" border="0" width="100%"> <tr> <td align="center" colspan="2"><hr></td> </tr> <tr> <td align="right" nowrap><b><font color="FF0000">Contact Person&nbsp;<img src="/images/icon_contact.gif" align="absmiddle">&nbsp;:</font></b></td> <td align="left" width="100%">&nbsp;Joe Smith</td> </tr> <tr> <td align="right" nowrap><b><font color="FF0000">Phone Number&nbsp;<img src="/images/icon_phone.gif" align="absmiddle">&nbsp;:</font></b></td> <td align="left" width="100%">&nbsp;555-555-5555</td> </tr> <tr> <td align="right" nowrap><b><font color="FF0000">E-mail Address&nbsp;<img src="/images/icon_email.gif" align="absmiddle">&nbsp;:</font></b></td> <td align="left" width="100%">&nbsp;<a HREF="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a></td> </tr> more... There is more code on the screen in a different table structure that I also need to pull.

Another possibility would be to add some text at the right of the progress bar (I tryied with a but it comes in the line after)

  • Are newly installed fonts in an email going to be displayed properly on another computer?

    - by Mehper C. Palavuzlar
    I have downloaded and installed a new font family (Gentium) on my machine. I want to use this font in some of my email correspondences. When I compose an email in Outlook 2007 with these fonts and send it to someone, is he going to be able to display it properly (I mean, with the same fonts, just the same as I can see the email)? I'm assuming the addressee doesn't have this font family installed on his machine. Does it matter if the addressee uses Outlook or a web-based email?
