• stuck in busybox after update

  I should start out by saying that I am not very tech savvy and have done my best to understand what is going on here from reading other people's posts and have fumbled my way through several attempted fixes without getting anywhere... I run ubuntu 12.04 on an admittedly cheap laptop from ebuyer and in spite of being cheap and not a brand laptop I have never had any major problems with it. Since updating to 12.04 when it was released the boot-up process has always been slow. Logging in takes about 30secs longer than it used to and if I closed my laptop and opened it again instead of being met with a login screen I'd be met with a black screen with a white mouse. As all of these problems had a behavior-changing fix (don't close laptop, patiently wait for login, etc.) I didn't think of reporting any of the issues. Last night when the update manager prompted me that there were updates available I duly did them as I usually do. At the time a bug report came up and I cannot remember what it said but I reported the bug as I was prompted to do. Then this morning when I started up my laptop it went through the usual sequence, GRUB, purple screen with 'ubuntu' etc. and then when it tried to boot up it went into BusyBox and I have not been able to do anything to solve this. I have tried going into the GRUB menu and starting previous versions but I come to the same point - busybox. I have borrowed another rather elderly laptop with Windows Vista to try and download Boot Repair and Ubuntu and burn them onto CD. I tried downloading boot repair five times, to laptop, CD and USB. Every time it would download and burn fine but then the windows laptop would tell me that 1% did not download properly and my laptop would not run the USB or CD upon booting. I then tried to download ubuntu and make a livecd, twice, but again was told that 1% did not download properly and again my laptop will not run ubuntu from the CD upon booting even if/when I went into the f2 menu and changed the menu priority (if that's what you call it) for booting up to make sure it was definitely trying the USB/CD first. This is the message I get from busybox: BusyBox v1.18.5 (Ubuntu 1:1.18.5-1ubuntu4) built-in shell (ash) Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands I have tried 'exit' but it mentions things about 'kernal panic' and 'tried to quit init!' and 'can't find /root/dev/console : no such file'. I know that the problem is probably caused by a problem with a kernal caused by the update last night, but I couldn't honestly tell you exactly what was updated and without being able to boot from a livecd I'm not sure how to go about fixing this. As I said, I am not tech savvy and have done what I can to try and find a solution to the problem but I'm starting to feel like I'm out of options. Does anyone have any ideas?

• Why my laptop doesnt boot in any OS (windows or ubuntu) after RAM upgrade?

  My laptop previously had 2 slots of RAM ( 1x1Gb , 1x2GB , both were clocked at 1066mhz) and it was working on windows 7 x86 OS. I Upgraded the ram with ( 2x4GB clcoked at 1333mhz). Bios displayed 8192MB of memory and windows was working ok but (only 2.99GB of ram from 8gb was avabile). So i decided to switch to an x64 system to be able to use all the amount of memory. But the laptop wasnt able to install any os (windows 7 x64 or windows 8 x64) so i placed the 3gb of ram instead of 8gb. Then i succesfully instaled an x64 os (windows 8). After than i placed the 8gb ram back again. Now the computer doesnt boot in the os but bios is working normally. I tried also to install ubuntu , without any succes. What should i do ??   I am one of the technical directors of a regular karaoke contest event. For the karaoke contest itself, due to tight budget, we are using what one of the sponsors are providing - Magic Sing ET-23H . The video output of the Magic Sing ET-23H are broadcasted at two big screens that are being shown to the audience and event attendees. When a karaoke contestant provides his / her karaoke video, the video itself is in a readable USB flashdrive and is attached to the USB input of Magic Sing ET-23H. What really bugs me is that the interface of Magic Sing ET-23H are also being broadcasted at the big screen video feeds. The interface of choosing the video file is being seen in the Magic Sing ET-23H - also to the big video screens that are seen by the audience and event goers. I will post in the comments ( if my less than 10 reputation would allow me) the picture of Magic Sing ET-23KH USB input of the device. I always bring my laptop, Acer AS5742-7653, during the regular karaoke event. I'm using my laptop also for tallying of scores from the judges, and also playing audio files from contestants that did not provide a karaoke video. I personally am using different Linux distros, but I next to all the time use my Ubuntu Studio 12.04.3 64bit partition during the regular karaoke contest event. My question is this: Is there a way I can share a temporary video/audio file directly from the laptop I'm using, going to the Magic Sing ET-23H that can broadcast both the video/audio file? Just like how in Window's Avisynth AVS files, or VirtualDub's temporary avi file, or like using ffplay (of ffmpeg), etc. I have researched somewhat the matter and found links in SuperUser.com. Though I can only provide the links at the comments section of this post if my reputation of less than 10 would allow me. I have a hunch it is possible, but I have not fully understood the device being used at the event, Magic Sing ET-23H, if there are other ways for it to broadcast video and audio files besides its USB input. Any help to my current predicament is highly appreciated. Thank you. I'd like to automatically have copies of all my photos on both my laptop, desktop and my NAS. Does anyone else do this? Do you have any recommendations for Software or processes? Is there anything I need to be careful of? I had a look at Dropbox, but it appears to have a 2 gig limit? What about something like SyncBack?

  I have an HP Elitebook 8440p with Windows 7 Ultimate, i7 Processor and 8 GB RAM. For the last couple of days, when I plug-in my laptop for charging, the CPU usage shoots up to 100% and remains there for around 15 minutes. No offending process shows up in Task Manager/Process Explorer but the laptop is practically unusable for that time. The CPU usage becomes normal when I remove the power cord but shoots up again when plugged back. This is happening with different power adapters/wall sockets so it might not be a faulty adapter issue. Why is this happening and any pointer to resolve this issue?

  My laptop is Dell Inspiron N4030. I used to use Ubuntu 12.04 and it was on the entire hard drive. I tried to install windows 7 but my laptop couldn't install it. So, I decided to delete the entire hard drive and do a fresh install of Windows 7. But after deletion I immediately removed the gparted live usb which I was using to delete the partitions of my hard drive. And then tried booting from windows 7 cd, didn't work, tried ubuntu live cd, didn't work, tried hiren's boot cd, didn't work, tried super grub disk, didn't work. Probably I'm not doing it right. Help needed badly.

  I think Skype may have corrupted my laptop speakers somehow. The other day I was listening to music on my headphones when a coworker started sending me IMs. Whenever the alert sound played, the music and alert would both come out through the laptop speakers for a second instead of the headphones. Now sound only comes out through the speakers when skype is playing sounds, or if I right click the volume control, select Playback Devices and test the headphones. So if I play music it's silent. If I go into Skype and dial the sound test call the music will start coming through the speakers. Any ideas how to fix this? Win7 by the way.

  I can connect with my phone and use the browser as usual. On my laptop it won't connect when using windows 7 while in ubuntu it will connect, but with no internet.   I set up a VPN on Windows Server 2008 through its routing and remote access services. I connected to the VPN, and configured the client to allow for split tunneling (Internet traffic goes to my default gateway, and traffic directed to the VPN server goes through the VPN gateway). I had to adjust the routing table, adding an entry to ensure traffic to my VPN server goes through the tunnel by running the command "route add [VPN.IP] mask 255.255.255.255 [VPN.GATEWAY.IP] IF [VPN_INTERFACE_#]". Adding the correct route makes everything work flawlessly on all my machines, except for one. The problematic machine is a laptop that's not directly connected to a network. It connects to WiFi, and then connects to a VPN to obtain internet access. Finally, it connects to the target VPN server for file sharing. The "route add" trick doesn't work for that laptop, I'm assuming because it's connected to two VPNs, and I'm getting the routing wrong. Can anyone familiar with routing explain what routes I may need to add?

  I have another concern with my laptop. When I had a problem with the microphone, I tried to restore the system. But sadly, I had a mistake with the process and accidentally it was formatted. Its a built in laptop. (Toshiba m840, Windows 7, 64 bit) After the format process, programs were automatically installed. Until a friend of mine told me that I might have 2 Windows installed already. When we checked the program, he was right. I'm having 2 program files folders, which means I really have 2 Windows installed and running in my laptop. Supposed to be, there should be only 1 right? Can anyone help me how to delete the other Windows? Because I think it is occupying much space in the hard drive. They say it could make my laptop become slower.

• DHCP not responding from laptop or router, but works on directly plugged PC?

  I'm at my sister in law's place in Singapore. I'm not from Singapore but am here for a few months. She has some sort of cable modem made by motorolla (SB5101 Surfboard). I think it goes, through starhub or similar provider. Anyhow, her PC is directly attached by cable (not wireless) and she can access the internet. There is no wireless router connected to it. The PC is configured with DHCP and appears to be working. However, the moment I unplug her PC and plug in my laptop, it doesn't get an address. The interesting thing here is that I also see this toredo tunnel adaptor etc. I'm not familiar with what that is. It appears to be being assigned an IP v6 address and an IP v4 address. I thought perhaps it's my laptop, but also when I plug in my DDWRT based router, it also fails to get a DHCP assigned address on the WAN port. I can't also seem to connect into any web configuration on the motorolla modem either. Any ideas? what kind of setup is this? all I'd like to do is plug in my wireless router so I can roam around the house and also access the internet.

  I have Dell Laptop with windows 7 64 bit and for the last year it's been just a machine with an account like: machine\john there are files in folders and stuff in c:\users\john and john uses outlook 2007 as a pop3 client and has identifiable local appdata pst files. Now I installed a server and want to have everything be domain-centric so I added this laptop to the domain with admin credentials and then logged in as a domain user as: domain\john.smith Now I want to duplicate machine\john (outlook emails mostly) to domain\john.smith. In the past I used the Files and Settings Xfer Wizard and done. I tried that here and it crunched away for a while, made the file, but the restore had no effect - it ran for a while, had a progress bar, but it's like nothing happened at all afterwards. I've rebooted the machine, logged in as domain administrator as the first user to log on after the restart and tried: c:\users\john xcopy c:\users\john c:\users\john.smith /V /C /F /H /K /Y /E ...and it copies some of it, but when it gets to c:\users\john.smith\appdata\local\application data it chokes "Access denied, unable to create directory" I also tried logging in as domain\john.smith and copying the entire directory that the PSTs are in from machine\john and a lot of the mail was there when I launched outlook after replacing the PSTs, but not all of them??? I got errors about files in use when doing this method, which I figure must be why not all the old emails are in the inbox?... There must be some extremely simple way to do what must be a very common requirement. Any guidance appreciated.

• How to increase the speed between two external hard drives on my laptop?

  Hello, I own Sony Vaio Z laptop with two external USB ports. It's quite new and has USB 2.0 support. I'm using Vista x64 on it. I also have two external usb hard drives, Iomega 500GB and WD for 1TB. Every hard drive has USB 2.0 support. I connect two devices to my laptop and trying to copy date from one hard drive to another. But it takes a lot of time! The speed is about 15 Megabytes per second. I have to wait toooooo long to copy all the information from one hard drive to another. When I try to copy information from my internal (SSD) hard drive, it works fine for both external drives. The speed is very high and it shows me something about 100 Megabytes per second. It makes me feel that USB 2.0 is OK on both drives. But when I'm trying to copy from one external drive to another external, I still get very low speed. Is there any way to make it work faster? Is it possible to move one of my USB ports to other USB 2.0 controller? Or is there any software which can help me to automate copying all the files thru my internal drive? I have only about 3 gigabytes free space on internal drive and it's quite difficult to move manually every file from one hard drive to internal and then again to another internal.

  Hello, I own Sony Vaio Z laptop with two external USB ports. It's quite new and has USB 2.0 support. I'm using Vista x64 on it. I also have two external usb hard drives, Iomega 500GB and WD for 1TB. Every hard drive has USB 2.0 support. I connect two devices to my laptop and trying to copy date from one hard drive to another. But it takes a lot of time! The speed is about 15 Megabytes per second. I have to wait toooooo long to copy all the information from one hard drive to another. When I try to copy information from my internal (SSD) hard drive, it works fine for both external drives. The speed is very high and it shows me something about 100 Megabytes per second. It makes me feel that USB 2.0 is OK on both drives. But when I'm trying to copy from one external drive to another external, I still get very low speed. • How to slave a 3.5" 500gb SATA external hard drive (Western Digital) to my Dell Inspiron laptop

  I have a 3.5" Western Digital My Book 500gb external hard drive. I gave it to a friend of mine, and he broke the USB port in it. I went to a nearby comp repair shop and had him solder the thing, and it didn't detect when it when I plugged it into my Dell Inspiron laptop. I recently saw about the 3.5" SATA to USB enclosure, so I went to check it. Strangely, when its placed in the enclosure, its not detecting in Windows. Also, when it was put as secondary (I'm guessing slave) to the shop fellow's desktop, it shows up in the BIOS and while starting, but then again doesn't show in Windows 7. The guy told me that I need to use a data recovery tool to get my data back. P.S. Whe WD hard drive doesnt have an OS, just data. So my question is: Can I slave the drive to my Dell laptop and try to recover the data, and if so how? I would really appreciate it any help, thanks in advance.
