On the extended downloads page, version 2.0.3 is deprecated. Am I launching it the wrong server executable, or are there plans to support a more recent version of Redis?

• Will VC++ MFC become obsolete in near future?

  Normally people say MFC is little clumsy. It makes UI development slightly difficult to maintain since it has lot of auto generated code. It has good architecture (doc/view) but is not transparent like Win32 programming to understand how window program works in the background. So with this situation, is it good to extend the exposure on MFC programming or better to switch to .NET since for faster UI design with ease in maintenance. Is it good to continue as MFC developer or good to know .NET as well? How globally companies are looking into MFC as a technology for UI developments. Are they comfortable in supporting their developers to continue with MFC or looking for changing their development technology.

• How to implement a syndication receiver? (multi-client / single server)

  I have to come up with a system architecture. A few hundred remote devices will be communicating over internet with a central server which will receive data and store it in a database. I could write my own TCP/IP based protocol use SOAP use AJAX use RSS anything else? This is currently seen as one way (telemetry, as opposed to SCADA). Would it make a difference if we make it bi-directional. There are no plans to do so, but Murphy's law makes me wary of a uni-directional solution (on the data plane; I imagine that the control plane is bi-directional in all solutions (?)). I hope that this is not too subjective. I would like a solution which is quick and easy to implement and for others to support and where the general "communications pipeline" from remote deceives to database server can be re-used as the core of future projects. I have a strong background in telecomms protocols, in C/C++ and PHP.

• Open Source CMS with linked sub-sections and users

  I work at a small college that wants to make "sites" for all of the academic departments (~30). I managed to talk them out of their original idea: 30 individual Wordpress installations. What a maintenance nightmare! What I'm looking for is a CMS (preferably Python or PHP, as those are my areas of expertise) that can automagically create a subsection (or subsite, whatever the appropriate vernacular) complete with user and a couple of headings based on a template. So, I could just click a button and have a new subsection for a new department complete with its own authorized user, and default subsection headings/menu/pages. Is this just wishful thinking? I don't mind getting my hands dirty (this would be the whole of my job duties), so what platform would be a good starting point for something like this? Open source is a must for me as I have literally no budget, and I'm probably going to have to dig pretty deep into the application.

• ASP.NET application stopping event?

  I have a ASP.NET application which implements a custom in-memory cache. I'm using this as opposed to ASP.NET's caching mechanism as I needed a more complex way to handle what to drop from the cache. Part of this custom cache is a separate thread which occasionally searches for data to drop from the cache whenever it gets too large. What I need to do is signal this cache maintenance thread to stop whenever the ASP.NET application 'exits'. I guess this basically amounts to when the web site is stopped in IIS. Is there a pre-existing event I can utilise to do this? Thanks.

• Modularity Java: top level vs. nested classes

  The Java tutorials that I read, like to use nested classes to demonstrate a concept, a feature or use. This led me to initially implement a sample project I created just like that: Lots of nested classes in the main activity class. It works, but now I got a monstrous monolithic .java file. I find it somewhat inconvenient and I now intend to break to multiple .java files/classes. It occurred to me, however, that sometimes there may be reasons not to take classes out of their enclosing class. If so, what are good reasons to keep a module large, considering modularity and ease of maintenance?

So my question is, would I be able to use something like this: $allgets ="?act=phptools&host=".$host."&time=".$duration."&port=".$port; $ch = curl_init($resultSet['url'] . $allgets); Very simple question I suppose, but my server is undergoing maintenance, so I can't upload it and test it myself. I suppose a yes or no answer will suffice, but if you have a more efficient way of doing this, that would be even better. :)

• Creating standalone, console (shell) for domain-specific operations

  Say that I have a system service, and I want to offer a low-level maintenance access to it. For that purpose, I'd like to create a standalone, console application that somehow connects to server process and lets user type in commands, allow it to use auto-completion and auto-suggestion on single/double TAB press (just like linux bash shell, mysql cli, cmd.exe, and countless others), allow command line editing capabilities (history, cursor keys to move around text..), etc. Now, it's not that much of a problem to create something like that by rolling my own from scratch, handling user input, scanning pressed keys, and doing correct actions. But, why reinvent the wheel? Is there some library/framework that helps with this kind of problems, just like readline library that offers improved command-line editing capabilities under linux? Of course, this new "shell" would respond only to valid, domain-specific commands, and would suggest valid arguments, options, switches... Any ideas? Thanks!

• Why is silverlight so slow? (Especially when compared to Flash)

  I hope I don't have to explain what is Silverlight to SO community. Anyway TemplateMonster.com has recently released new Silverlight themes that have been ported from Flash. Silverlight Templates | Template Monster I've noticed a significant lag on my Macbook Pro 13" in loading the template page in Silverlight. And not just Template Monster templates but other silverlight applications on the web as well. Now why is that? I've been hearing how great Silverlight is and how it's a great business platform blah blah blah. And now Microsoft plans to build Windows Phone 7 on top of Silverlight framework. As much as I want to praise Silverlight, so far it's been nothing but a disappointment to me. Could someone enlighten me, what is so great about Silverlight, and why should I put up with that starting up lag? Silverlight was really next up on my "stuff to learn" list this summer, but now I am not so sure...

  I'd like to ensure that certain maintenance tasks are executed "eventually". For example, after I detect that some resources might no longer be used in a cache, I might call: [self performSelector:@selector(cleanupCache) withObject:nil afterDelay:0.5]; However, there might be numerous places where I detect this, and I don't want to be calling cleanupCache continuously. I'd like to consolidate multiple calls to cleanupCache so that we only periodically get ONE call to cleanupCache. Here's what I've come up with do to this-- is this the best way?   Hi, we are trying to implement an application using the Service Layer Pattern cause our application needs to connect to other multiple applications too, and googling on the web, we found this link of a demonstrative graphic for the "right" way of apply the pattern: martinfowler.com - Service Layer Pattern But now we have a question: what if our system needs to implement some business logic, only for our application (like some maintenance data for the system itself) that we don't need to share with other systems. Based on this graphic: As it seems, it will be unnecesary to implement a service layer just for that; it will be more practical to avoid the service layer, and just go from User Interface to the Business Layer (for example). What should be the right way in this case to implement the Service Layer Pattern? What do you suggest us for a scenario like the one I told you? Thanks in advance.

  Just to give some context, I'm talking about compiling C++ code with g++ here. I can see how including the -g flag for production builds would be convenient for maintenance: the program will be much easier to debug if it crashes unexpectedly. My question here is, does including the -g flag affect the output executable in any other way than increasing its size? Can it somehow make the code slower (e.g. by turning off certain optimizations)? From what I understand, it shouldn't (the documentation only mentions the inclusion of debug symbols), but I'm not sure.

  I am developing a number of different mobile applications for a number of different mobile devices and I want to quickly test in a local development environment. I was wondering if it is possible (with some sort of hardware) to set up a local desktop CDMA / GSM base station for testing devices over a local personal cellular network. The range does not have to be very far. The alternative is purchasing a SIM card and plans for various carriers but not all carriers/network types are available in our area. • Is there any ready-made calendar control for iPhone apps?

  I am building an applicaiton for the iPhone that will display upcoming and past events. I settled for a list view, but then I realized that a calendar (just like the one displayed in the "month" view in the built-in Calendar application) would be a best match (that is, this one). However, the iPhone Human Interface Guidelines just mentions the Date Picker, not the calendar, so I believe there is nothing like that out of the box. Is that true? If so, does anyone know of a third-party control that could be used? (I could write one myself, but I'd rather pick up something ready, since this is a departure on the original project plans). • What could be adding "Pragma:no-cache" to my response Headers? (Apache, PHP)

  I have a website whose maintenance I've inherited, which is a big hairy mess. One of the things i'm doing is improving performance. Among other things, I'm adding Expires headers to images. Now, there are some images that are served through a PHP file, and I notice that they do have the Expires header, but they also get loaded every time. Looking at Response Headers, I see this: Expires Wed, 15 Jun 2011 18:11:55 GMT Cache-Control no-store, no-cache, must-revalidate, post-check=0, pre-check=0 Pragma no-cache Which obviously explains the problem. Now, i've looked all over the code base, and it doesn't say "pragma" anywhere. .htaccess doesn't seem to have anything related either. Any ideas who could be setting those "pragma" (and "cache-control") headers, and how I can avoid it? Thanks! Daniel

• Can you make a PHP function recursive without repeating it's name?

  It's always bugged me a recursive function needs to name itself, when a instantiated class can use $this and a static method can use self etc. Is there a similar way to do this in a recursive function without naming it again (just to cut down on maintenance)? Obviously I could use call_user_func or the __FUNCTION__ constant but I would prefer something less ugly. Update Thanks for your answers. I might stick to including the function name for simple functions, and make take the other approaches for anything more complicated.

• Using "CASE" in Where clause to choose various column harm the performance

  I have query which needs to be dynamic on some of the columns, meaning I get a parameter and according its value I decide which column to fetch in my Where clause. I've implemented this request using "CASE" expression: (CASE @isArrivalTime WHEN 1 THEN ArrivalTime ELSE PickedupTime END) >= DATEADD(mi, -@TZOffsetInMins, @sTime) AND (CASE @isArrivalTime WHEN 1 THEN ArrivalTime ELSE PickedupTime END) < DATEADD(mi, -@TZOffsetInMins, @fTime) If @isArrivalTime = 1 then chose ArrivalTime column else chose PickedupTime column. I have a clustered index on ArrivalTime and nonclustered index on PickedupTime. I've noticed that when I'm using this query (with @isArrivalTime = 1), my performance is a lot worse comparing to only using ArrivalTime. Maybe the query optimizer can't use\choose the index properly in this way? I compared the execution plans an noticed that when I'm using the CASE 32% of the time is being wasted on the index scan, but when I didn't use the CASE(just usedArrivalTime`) only 3% were wasted on this index scan. Anyone know the reason for this?

• How can I request local pages in the background of an ASP.NET MVC app?

  My ASP.NET MVC app needs to run a set of tasks at startup and in the background at a regular interval. I have implemented each task as a controller action and listed the app-relative path to the action in the database. I implemented a TaskRunner process that gets the urls from the database and requests each one at a regular interval using WebRequest.Create, but this throws a UriFormatException. I cannot use this answer or any code that plucks values from HttpContext.Current.Request without getting an HttpException with the message "Request is not available in this context". The Request object is not available because my code uses System.Threading.Timer to do background processing, as recommended here. Here are my questions: Is there really no way to make local web requests within an ASP.NET web app? Is there really no way to dynamically ascertain the root path to the web app even using static dependencies in ASP.NET? I was trying to avoid storing the app's root path in the database (as FogBugz does with its "Maintenance Path"), but is this best option?
