• Setting wildcard queries as default for QueryParser

  When my users enter a term like "word" I would like it be treated as a wildcard query "word*" so all terms beginning "word" are found. Is there a way to tell the QueryParser to automatically create wildcard queries or do I have to parse the query myself? This shouldn't be a problem for simple queries but it may become tricky for more complex queries.

• Dealing with personal failure

  A while ago I was given the task of updating and extending the functionality of a software project. I was given a year to make the needed changes working solo. A month into development I came to the conclusion that it would take longer to change the existing product than to rewrite it from the ground up. I'd never attempted a complete rewrite so I talked with my boss about it and he was thrilled with the idea. I'm a fan of agile development but had never had the opportunity to take advantage of all of the prescribed practices so when I set to work I tried to incorporate as many as I could. I didn't have direct access to the customer and my coworkers (non-programmers) knew the business domain but were already so busy they didn't really have time to participate in design meetings so I resigned to working in the dark and occasionally calling one of them over to my desk to get feedback on my progress. I used TDD and refactored mercilessly and even tried taking a domain driven design approach. Things went well for a while. As the deadline came closer and the complexity of the project grew my productivity start slipping. I found myself cutting corners and ignoring the practices I had established as the pressure increased to meet the deadline. I also started working late nights and weekends to keep up with the load. In the end it made little difference how hard I worked. The project missed its deadline and what was completed wasn't enough to give to the customer. I had failed. Not only had I not finished on time but the previous version had sat untouched for almost a year so it wouldn't be of any help. Luckily we had another product that offered some of the same functionality. My boss decided to cancel the project entirely and moved all our orphaned customers to the other product. I spent weeks (along with everyone else at the company) manning the phones providing technical support for those customers. After it was all over, my boss was gracious enough not to fire me for nearly ruining the company. I was moved to the other product and have been trying to redeem myself ever since. Where did I go wrong? Has anyone else had to deal with this kind of defeat? How did you recover?

  I've created a child class of QTreeWidget that I want to be able to drag items from another tree widget too (I want to handle the insertion myself though), as well as from a QListWidget. I've overridden the dropEvent method in my class, and it looks like the mimetype of the data I'm getting from my QTreeWidget is application/x-qabstractitemmodeldatalist, how can I decode this to get the items from the tree back out?

• Check whether server is up in AppleScript

  I have an intranet server running on a Windows XP computer and the internet connection on it has been known to be pretty unreliable (surprise, surprise) so I was wondering if there was a way to use an AppleScript to poll it every hour or so to see if it is up and running and if it isn't, execute something, like send myself an email.   Hi, i have a small problem. Im using the ASP.NET Xml control and want to pass it a url to a rss feed and a stylesheet - so that i can style the rss myself on my website. When applying the full web path to the xml control (http://www.myserver.com/myfeed.rss) i get an exception telling me that the document source is not a valid virtual path. What am i doing wrong? I would hate to download the file before showing it...

• Detecting own posts on Facebook from a Chrome extension perspective

Is there an event that occurs or something? (And just for the record, I know that these sorts of things are impossible when other apps post on my behalf, at least from an extension perspective.   I know in Jython you can do import java.util.Random as Random Random().nextInt() But if I have a class I wrote myself, how can I import it into Jython without putting the class itself in a package? If I have a testclass Test: public class Test { public void foo() { System.out.println("bar"); } } that's not inside a package. Can I even import that into jython by using something along the lines offrom Test import Test?

• Include a database file with Android application via Eclipse

  How can I instruct Eclipse to copy a file from my Android solution to an emulator, as part of Run/Debug? I have a small database, stored in Assets, that needs to accompany the application. Thus far I have simply copied the file myself using DDMS but would prefer to have it automatically included. The project properties allow me to specify some aspects of the build, e.g. the build order and which libraries should be included, but I don't see anything about simply copying a file.

One idea I can think of is going through all the popular algorithms on sorting, trees, graphs etc. and implementing them in Clojure myself.   I've been banging my head on an issue and before I continue injuring myself some more, I'd like to confirm: Is it possible to have a GCC project that uses libraries that are compiled with and without RTTI? So, for example, I have project A (compiled without RTTI) that uses library B (compiled with RTTI) and library C (compiled without RTTI). In theory, is all that supposed to compile and link with no problems?
