  • Database problem with MS JET

    I am migrating a bunch of sites which each use an Access database (or whatever an MDB file is). If I try to load the site, I get the following error: Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server error '80004005' [DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (Connect()).]SQL Server does not exist or access denied If I rename the MDB file, I get a complaint that the file does not exist, which makes sense. If the file is named correctly, the site tries to load for about 30 seconds or so, and then just fails with the above message. During this waiting period, I can see a lock file being created (and then at some point removed). The MDB file and it's parent dir have full permissions granted to all users. Given that the lock file is successfully created and removed, I don't think that this is a "real" permission issue. The OS is Windows Server 2003 SP2. I am not sure about much more detail on it's config wrt Access databases. I also don't know what version it is expected to be.     I am trying to access a SQL Server database housed on a ISP. Normally one would simply install an express version of SQL server and use the Management Studio therein. Yeah, not me! Are there any third party tools that will allow me to manage my database? Lightweight ones would be the best but I'm not that picky. :)

  • Configure IE to use MS Word Viewer as .doc viewer on Citrix server with Office installed

    We have a small number of citrix servers that all have office installed. Only a small subset of users have access to office. Everyone is set to open office documents with the free viewers on the Citrix servers. We control access to office through NTFS permissions. We now have a large number of users who need to be able to view office documents from a webpage. Opening office files normally works fine. When users open the office documents from the link in a webpage, it ignores the file associations and attempts to open the document with the full office program. How can I change the program that IE uses to open office documents, or how can I force it to use the file associations I set in the operating system?

  • MS SQL Server Firewall Ports

    Hi, I've recently found myself in the position of quickly deploying a production app on SQL Server 2008 (EXPRESS), and I've been having some issues with configuring firewall rules between our web server running the ASP.NET app and our database server. Everything that I can find on the internet claims that I should only need to have TCP ports 1433/1434 and UDP port 1434 accessible on the database server. However, we were unable to get connectivity going between the web app and the database with just those ports. With the help of one of the guys in our datacentre, we discovered that there was traffic also going to TCP port 2242 on the database server. After opening this port, everything worked, but we're not sure why. Later on, I had to reinstall SQL Server due to some disk space issues, and found that the problem had resurfaced - after another session with the packet sniffer, we discovered that this time traffic was going to TCP port 4541 on the database server. My question is, is there some configuration option that I'm missing in SQL server that's making it choose random ports? I'd like to have our firewall rules locked down as much as possible, and of course we'd like to avoid any future mysterious connectivity issues, especially once the app is live. Both servers are running Windows 2003 R2 X64.

  • Automated software installation for MS Windows?

    I am currently setting up a Windows development environment (the whole Visual Studio 2010 stack plus plugins on top of Windows 7). This has got me wondering whether there's a Windows equivalent to what I do for dev environment setup in Ubuntu. It takes literally hours to get a dev environment set up in Windows, involving a lot of manual intervention. On Ubuntu, I have two shell scripts - one I run as root which configures the system using apt-get (amongst other things), one I run as me which configures my user account. Those scripts live in my private Subversion repository. To set up a dev environment from scratch requires five commands: sudo apt-get install -y subversion svn co http://svn.XXXX.XXX/personal/ cd personal sudo ./ubuntu_setup_root.sh ./ubuntu_setup_user.sh The only human intervention required is to pick a root password for MySQL. So it takes only a few minutes of human attention to go from a vanilla Ubuntu installation to a full development environment with the latest builds of everything, perfectly tailored down to shortcut keys and wallpaper. Is there an equivalent process for Windows? In an ideal world it'd be something trivially scriptable using C# Script or Powershell, which could live in source control & make use of a repository of ISOs downloaded from MSDN ...

  • Table modifications while running db replication (MS SQL 2008)

    I'm running SQL Server 2008 Std with a database that is being published in a "Transactional Publication" to a single subscriber. We are unable to make any changes to the tables on the publisher without getting the "cannot modify table because it is published for replication". This seems odd because schema changes (or scripts run to do this) should be pushed to the subscriber. We currently have to drop the entire publication system to make table changes. What am I missing? There must be a way to update the publisher tables? thanks!

  • Multiple IPs on single server - Specify which is used to connect (MS server 2008 / DNS)

    I have a Windows 2008 server with multiple IPs that is acting as DNS server. I have set the DNS server up to only accept connections on a single of these IPs. The DNS is serving as secondary DNS and when it connects to the primary DNS server it is not connecting with this particular IP address, but one of the other IPs. Is there a way in which I can make sure the server connects using the correct IP?

    Hello. I have just installed Microsoft SQL Express from here: http://www.microsoft.com/Sqlserver/2005/en/us/express-down.aspx I need it because an example of some code I have uses it. My question is: How do I start using it? Which port it opens by default. All I have after installing it is this: I'm not asking for a full tutorial on how to admin MSSql, just a hint on what to do next. I have downloaded and tested in the past Oracle XE and test it with SQuirreL SQL client with out problems.

  • Setting up routing for MS DirectAccess to a VMWare EsXi Host

    I'm trying to set up DirectAccess on a virtual machine so I can demonstrate it's value and then if need be add a physical machine to host it. I'm hitting a problem because the Direct Access machine (DA01) needs to have 2 public addresses actually configured on the external adapter but there is a Zyxel Zywall USG300 between the VMware ESXi host and the outside world. I've summarised my setup in this diagram If I ping from the LAN to 212.x.y.89 I get a response but if I ping from the VM I get destination host unreachable. I used "route add 212.x.y.89 192.c.d.1" and get request timed out. At that point I see outbound traffic allowed on the Zyxel firewall but nothing coming back. I'm past my understanding of routing and VMWare so am not sure how to tie down where my problem lies (or even if this setup is possible). So any help massively appreciated. Paul

  • Moving MS Exchange 2007 to another machine

    We have a machine that has been chugging along with the burden of both Exchange and DC and DNS all with SBS 2008. We have a better machine now and I'd like to move Exchange 2007 to that machine and take it off of this machine. In fact, I'm planning on formatting the old machine and get rid of SBS all together because it is making the machine SLOW. How would I go about making the move? I've read on previous versions of Exchange (2000), that all you do is install Exchange on the new machine and then start moving mailboxes one after the other. Well, what about all the different rules we have in place? How do those get moved? How do we de-commission the old exchange and set up the new exchange as the primary one? Come to think of it, how do we have both exchanges recognize each other on the same domain? TIA

  • Command line scripts to restore the 4 system databases of MS SQL Server 2008

    Hi there, can someone give me some advice on how to restore the 4 system databases (master, msdb, model, tempdb) of a sql server 2008 please? I've already done some testing myself (on restoring the master database) with the following commad line script as a result: ::set variables set dbname=master set dbdirectory=C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\DATA title Restoring %dbname% database net stop mssqlserver cd C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\Binn sqlservr -m sqlcmd -Slocalhost -E -Q "restore database master from disk='c:\master.bak' WITH REPLACE" net start mssqlserver pause After the execution of the 'sqlservr -m' command (used to start the server instance in single-user mode, which is only necessary when restoring the MASTER database), the script stops. So in order to execute the last 2 commands I need to separate the script into 2 smaller scripts, and run them one after the other. Does anyone has an idea on how I can merge them into one single script that runs completely without any interruption? I also want to restore the other 3 system databases using command line scripts like this one. Can someone please advice me how I need to go on? I've already noticed that restoring the temdb is not so easy, but there has to be a way... Looking forward to your advice!

  • Did MS break IE with update on 2010-01-12?

    I have 4 computers at 2 completely seperate clients that have all experienced the same problem on the same day. Internet Explorer 7 is returning "Page not Found" for all sites. The real kicker is that all other Internet works, including Firefox. At least one of the machines is Vista. Not sure on the other 3. At least 2 of the machines have no proxy server set so it isn't that. Did Microsoft push an automatic update that broke IE7 on Tuesday 2010-01-12? Has anyone else experienced this problem in the last week? This can't be a coincidence. Apart from being located in the same town and being supported by my company (we didn't change anything) these clients have nothing in common except they use Windows and they browse with IE. These machines probably share other traits, like having Spybot installed, however removing Spybot changed nothing. Also, of course i got them to reboot. Still broken.

  • Spilled water on MS 4000 keyboard

    I spilled some water on the left side of my Microsoft 4000 Ergonomic Keyboard xausing several keys to malfunxtion. Most started working again after leaving the keyboard upside down in a warm-air clothes dryer for an hour. I presume there is some lingering moisture whixh is xausing the keypress errors. Should i be worried about permanent damage and what xan I do to get the remaining keys baxk?     I've seen two approaches to handling the presentation of shared storage to Windows Server 2008 R2 cluster VMs on VMWare vSphere. One is the traditional method of carving out a LUN on your SAN and presenting it to both hosts through the Microsoft ISCSI software initiator. The other method is to make a vmdk on an existing LUN and attach it to both hosts and made it an independent disk so that it isn't affected by snapshots. Is one way the "correct" way, or are both viable? Is there any advantage or disadvantage to doing either?

  • ms excel find and replace @ symbol results in broken formula

    I'm trying to search and replace in excel, the column is formatted as 'Text'. Find: [@ replace with: @ Whenever this finds a match at the start of a cell i.e the cell contents start with [@ and tries to replace that with @ the result is an error 'This function is not valid' I guess that since the @ operator is for references, this is causing the cell to be interpreted differently (not as text anymore) How do I make this replacement work? Copy/paste into another program is not a good option because some of the cells contain line-breaks.

I was wondering if I could install package such as xampp on windows server to save time and hassle installing in manually (I could not find a tutorial for this). I was wondering though, if it is safe, i.e. what will happen if I go to http://localhost/ - will I get the php or asp website? In general, is it safe to install xampp on windows server 2003?     Hi, Is it possible to split a large file into smaller files on Windows 2003 using a tool provided/supported/sanctioned by Microsoft? I see that there are a lot of freeware tools (various zip tools) for this task, but I need to move files off of a production server, thus would like to avoid tools I don't know if I can trust. I would much prefer some tool included in the Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit Tools or something along those lines. Does such a tool exist? Thank you.
