• TFS 2010 Check-in Policies

  Currently we have check-in policies that are implemented by installing the TFS 2010 Power Tools on each developer machine. I was wondering if there was a way we could store those policies centrally within the TFS Server itself and push them out to the Developer machines in a group policy fashion without having to install anything additional on the Developer machines as realistically we only want the Power Tools on a couple of people's machines. I can't seem to find any documentation on how to do this or if it's possible so if someone could point me in the right direction I'd be very grateful.

• Prevent Windows 7 from unpluging External HDD [migrated]

  I have installed Windows 7 as my media server. I pluged in 500GB external HDD via USB. I have changed power plan to Best Performance and changed advenced power settings to never turn off HDD etc. I even yesterday wrote powershell script (create and delete folder on this disk) and I have added it to harmonogram to run every 5 minutes starting from system boot. And nothing! Disk after some time (I realy can't say when) is turning off and Windows show "Unknown Device" in Device Manager. Then only system reboot or disk reboot helps. Any ideas how to prevent Windows 7 from stopping my external HDD? Cheers!

• Dell eSATAp not working with some SATA disks

  I have a Dell Inspiron XPS 15 (L502X) laptop, with an eSATAp port. I also have a Western Digital 1TB 3"5 SATA drive, that I'd like to use with the laptop. I bought a eSATAp <- SATA 22-pin cable (from Delock). When I use this cable my 3"5 HDD does NOT power up, no spin up. I thought that it's just this HDD taking too much power from the motherboard. However, I tested too with my 2"5 SATA HDD and it works successfully. Now the weird thing is that this 2"5 HDD takes 1.1A at 5V, and that the 3"5 HDD takes 0.7A at 5V. I don't understand why it can't work. Is there anything I could do for it to work ? What is really the problem ? Thanks for your help, Hugo

• Computer hanged in the middle of bios flashing process

  I have a laptop: Toshiba Satellite c660-17j, today I decided to update BIOS. I've downloaded bios updater from manufacturer's web site, and in the middle of flashing process computer hanged. I was waiting more than 30 minutes, but nothing was changed on the screen, i've tryed to PRESS MORE BUTTONS, but there were no reactions, so i've turned it off by removing battery (all other methods failed, even pressing power button for ~10 secs). After that computer can't start. I understand, that there's MESS in BIOS chip, and it's possible to re-flash it with hardware programmer, but I don't have it. I remember, that on some PCs (even on my eeepc) there was possibility to re-flash bios by inserting usb flash-disk (with .dat file on it, which contained BIOS), and power on PC, while holding some keys combination, then PC was switching to BIOS programming mode and re-flashed BIOS, after that it was possible to boot up normaly. Is there a way to recover computer without hardware programming BIOS chip? p.s. sorry for my english.

• Computer stopped working (ASUS P5GD1-VM)

  My computer stopped working the other day. I came down and it was kind of chirping away. Then, when I restarted it, it only did the same thing. I unplugged everything not needed and it did nothing at all. I thought maybe the power supply wasn't working, but when I took the cover off the green light on the motherboard was on and the power supply is making a little buzzing sound. But nothing happens when I turn the computer on, other than the green light on the motherboard flickers a bit. I checked the memory in other computer and it works fine. I'd love to be able to fix this with as little cost as possible. Can someone here help? P4-640 (3.2E GHz, 800 FSB, L2:2MB, EM64T, HT)

• Windows 8.1 will not boot after upgrading from Windows 8 on my PC

  I have not found a fix. After running the Windows 8.1 Update from the store my computer will not boot unless In insert my recovery USB drive and try to repair. (The repair fails.) However after I power of the PC and remove the USB drive. The PC will boot correctly once. I would leave the PC on but it shuts it self off at night. (And yes I have checked my power profile, it is set to never.) The only thing I have found online is a possibly corrupt video driver. I uninstalled the video driver reboot and it did not fix the issue. Anybody have any suggestions? The PC is a HP EliteBook 8730w laptop. I had no issues with Windows 8 or the Windows 8.1 preview.

• Windows 7: How to boot up in normal mode after improper shut down?

  I work in two different locations and whenever there is a power outage at one of the locations, Windows 7 detects that the system was improperly shutdown. Once the power is up, the PC powers on and Windows 7 enters REPAIR/SAFE mode where only someone physically in front of the PC can control it. (Networking is all disabled in this mode) Now before it enters REPAIR/SAFE mode, there is an option for a NORMAL boot. But the catch is that REPAIR/SAFE mode is selected by default with a 30 second timer. Once it automatically enters REPAIR/SAFE mode and if nobody is at the other location, I have no way to remote control it anymore. And then I have to drive over to the other location and reboot it and select boot into NORMAL mode. Where can I change this setting so that Windows 7 always boots into NORMAL mode no matter how many times it is improperly shut down?

• Notebook display not working properly

  I have an old Acer TM4001 notebook. If the laptop is powered-off, with the lid closed, when I power it on, it generally works. Then, without touching anything, if I reboot the computer the internal display wil not work anymore. To make it working again I need to shut down the pc, close and reopen the lid and then turn it on. If I close and reopen the lid if it is not working after power the pc on, it won't work. When the screen is working, closing and opening it has no effect (the data cable seems ok). The external monitor always works as expected: If the internal display is not detected, the external will be the main (and only) display. This is not OS-related. When the screen is not working I cannot see the POST. What could be the cause for this?

• Problem with Toshiba Mini Netbook not turning on

  This is the second time this has happened with my Toshiba Mini Netbook. When I restart it, it will shut down but then not come back up. It seems like it's running but the screen is blank and the power button is lit. The first time it happened I shut it down via the power button, then turned it back on while pressing F2 and it came up properly. Now, however, it is not doing it. The screen remains blank. What could be causing this and how do I fix it? It is running Windows XP.

• How do I disable Windows Search Indexing Service while on battery on Windows 7?

  Since upgrading from Windows XP to Windows 7, I've found laptop battery life is reduced. One issue is that the Windows Search Indexing Service is constantly running, even when on battery power. Using Resource Monitor shows it is often the top consumer of CPU time and top producer of disk activity. I imagine this is one of the primary reasons the battery is getting drained faster. I cannot find any options to tell Windows Search Indexing Service to not index while on battery power. The only solution seems to be to stop the service, and also disable the service (if you just stop it, it will restart itself after a while). Doing this gives me considerably more battery life, but it's a pain because I have to re-enable the service when plugged in again. Is there a better solution?

• Pc not booting, no video output, hard drive noises

  My computer suddenly stopped booting up. I just came back from a week long trip, and it was working fine before I left. When I power up the computer now, it seems to power up just fine (leds on, fans working), but then there's no output on the screen at all, and there's a noise that seems to be coming from the HD, like it is trying to read something. After the noise starts, it does 6 cycles and then stops. I'm not sure but I don't think it did this noise when the pc was still working. I tried using the onboard video card instead but it made no difference. What could be wrong with my computer?

• Hardware recommendations for building an Ubuntu encrypted file server

  I would like to build a file server for my home network using Ubuntu. It will serve files from RAID1 configured disks, either in the OS or in hardware. It will be connected to a Gigabit ethernet LAN. The disks will use an encrypted file system. It will serve samba shares. I would like a recommendation on what kind of processing power/memory I would need to build a box that would be able to sustain the full capacity of the Gigabit ethernet connection in a file transfer for a single connection with the overhead of serving from an encrypted disk. I'm not looking to build a dream server, I just want enough processing capacity for high performance (and reliable) file sharing and spend as little as possible for it. This may be tangential, but what kind of hardware would I need to have a server be able to reliably go into a low power mode when no requests are being made of it?

• Very Dark Windows 7 Screen

  My Gateway laptop -Windows 7- screen became too dark a few days ago after I finished installing Windows automatic update. I can see nothing unless I use a flashlight. Windows login screen is the only bright screen for few seconds. What should I do to resolve this issue? I checked power-saving/ Power Options settings and rebooting in Safe Mode. I tried to lower the refresh rate but it did not allow me. The laptop adapter type is ATI Radeon Xpress series. I calibrated display color. I uninstalled and reinstalled the adapter. I tried to update the driver but the driver is up to-date. Any help would be appreciated.

• How can I boot a vm on Hyper-V 2012 when it has a virtual hard-drive missing?

  We have a Hyper-V 2012 server with 8 VM's on. We have attached extra virtual hard-drives to each of the computers to store backups on. These drives are stored on a NAS. After a power failure, we tried to boot the VM's and found that they couldn't be booted without the attached backup drives. We couldn't boot the NAS at that point and so we had to remove all the extra drives manually, boot the VM's and re-attach the drives at a later date when we got the NAS back up and running. These backup drives are non-essential to the running of the system. I would like to know if there is a way to boot a VM on Hyper-V 2012 with some of the hard-drives (scsi) missing so that we can recover automatically from a power failure.

  Recently, an in-house Microsoft Small Business Server 2011 was installed where I work. Unfortunately, our buildings have a bad electrical power supply and we suffer frequent outages. We have a large percentage of staff working off-site. Now when the power goes off here, everyone everywhere loses email functionality. I have been assigned to research the possibility of routing our email to Google Apps while maintaining LAN functions on the SBS. I haven't worked with Microsoft products for several years now, so do not know how SBS is structured. Can anyone here tell me if this is possible, or point me to good resources that explain our options?

• Monitor does not turn on until reset

  I have a system with an ATI 4870 hooked up to a Samsung P2350 using DVI. My motherboard is a GA-EP45 DS4P with the latest BIOS. The situation is: I turn on my PC (with the power switch) I get a blank screen I hit reset and the PC boots up normally, i.e. the monitor turns on and This has been the case for a couple of months (Was away for a while, came back and it was the same case). I was hoping the situation would somehow fix itself but alas, nothing. I have tried numerous settings in the BIOS (Combinations of different settings of the ACPI and power saving options) and have tried different cables. Has anyone experienced this before? I don't know where to go from here. It is pretty infuriating because it means I can't put my computer to sleep, as the monitor won't come on. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

• One motherboard crashed. Changed and wants to crash again

  My computer started to freeze randomly. I was pretty sure it was the hard drive that was starting to fail. Before I could change it, the motherboard was completely dead. I bought the same one and reinstall it. Everything went working well until my computer started to freeze again and doing the same problem has before. I don't want my motherboard to burn again and I'm really wondering what can be the problem... Could it be the power supply or the video cards that burned the motherboard ? I tested the voltages of the power supply and they seemed fine... The computer worked as is for four years... • Turn 2 USB type A ports (receptacles) into an extension cable with 2 type A receptacles using Linux?

  I'm currently trying to connect 2 USB devices together, but both ends are type A plugs. Before I buy a physical extension cords with 2 type A receptacles, I'd like to know if I can connect these 2 devices together at all by passing data "transparently" through a Linux box with = 2 USB ports. I'm actually trying to connect a keyboard to an Android phone, and I want to first try if it can work by using a Linux box as a "virtual" USB extension cord. • Computer won't start when connecting SATA HDD

  I just bough a new HDD some time ago and recently i bought another SATA cable to have both HDDs connected at the same time, to transfer all the files from the older one to the newer. When i connected both of them, the computer started working, i tapped F2 to go to bios to make sure it was detected, and then after 5-10 seconds the computer instantly shut down. After this incident, my computer won't start at all when connecting the SATA power supply to the old HDD. If i connect only my new drive, it works without any problem. If i connect only my old drive, or both the old drive and the new one, and then push on the power button, the cpu fan simply rotates about 5 degrees and then stops.. and that's it, the computer doesn't start, and no sound from the pc speaker either. Is there any way to recover my files from the old HDD and transfer them to my new one? I do not want to use the old HDD any more, i only need to save all my files.

• (Solved) ERROR: Packet source 'wlan0' failed to set channel 2: mac80211_setchannel() in Kismet and Ubuntu 12.10

  I have installed Ubuntu 12.10 in my computer with an Atheros AR5007 wireless card. I want to use Kismet but when I run it it starts displaying the message: ERROR: Packet source 'wlan0' failed to set channel X: mac80211_setchannel() It keeps displaying the same for every channel except channel 1. I have installed the compat-wireless-3.6.6-1 drivers and patched them with the following patch in order to use them with aircrack-ng. I have installed the latest version of Kismet in the git repository and I even tried with the svn but it keeps displaying the same error. I also have set the kismet.conf file with the nsource=wlan0 as it is the name of my wireless interface according to iwconfig : lo no wireless extensions. wlan0 IEEE 802.11bg ESSID:"XXXX" Mode:Managed Frequency:2.412 GHz Access Point: XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX Bit Rate=18 Mb/s Tx-Power=20 dBm Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off Power Management:off Link Quality=28/70 Signal level=-82 dBm Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0 Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:282 Missed beacon:0 I haven't found any answer since similar errors are supposed to be fixed with the latest Kismet release but this isn't my case.   Think about this: By reading this blog, you and I are connected. We have this blog and its topics in common, so there's a chance we have other things in common as well. In any relationship there is a degree of trust and influence. If you trust me, at least in terms of particular subjects, then I have some influence over you. If I buy an iPad, then there's an opportunity for me to influence your possible purchase of an over-hyped tablet that you don't really need. So what could a retailer do with this? Retailers that have fans and followers should assume that the friends of those fans and followers are more susceptible to their marketing efforts. If I'm a fan of Apple, then Apple will be more successful marketing to my friends than marketing to random people. Intuitively that makes sense, at least to me. Companies like 33Across and Pursway are already putting this theory into practice, and achieving some interesting results. Jeff Jarvis, who by-the-way is speaking at CrossTalk this year, has been discussing the power of influencers in social networks. In his blog he rails against marketers and says "messages and influence aren't the future of marketing; conversations and relationships are." Valuable messages will be passed on because they are valuable, not because someone has the power to exert influence. True enough, but that won't stop the efforts underway to leverage social networks for more targeted advertising. From a business perspective, this sounds like a goldmine to me; on a personal level, it's a bit creepy.
