  Ad:: SharePoint 2007 Training in .NET 3.5 technologies (more information). Oh yeah baby, it’s out finally! This book is what I wanted to write for so long now, but never really got a chance to. For SharePoint 2007, I authored the SharePoint section of “Smart BI Solutions with SQL Server 2008” for MS Press. But never really got the time, to author a full book that this topic deserved. Until SharePoint 2010, we actually have a full book on this topic. So first things first, I didn’t actually write it. My role was limited to the overall concept, the outline, the layout, completion of it, code samples, identifying what we need in here, vouching for technical accuracy, identifying authors etc. The real work was done by Srini (5 chapters), and Steve (1 chapter). So credit given where it is due. But, with that said, this is a pretty good book. It has always been a challenge to find the superman that knows both, data ware housing concepts, and SharePoint concepts. The data ware housing concepts include basic stuff you need to know to work in the BI area such as cubes, MDX queries, etc. So chapter 1 covers that – and if you’re a hardcore DBA, feel free to skip Chapter 1. Then beyond that, we take every single SharePoint 2010 BI topic, and slice and dice it in detail. The topics we deal with are - Visio Services Reporting services Business Connectivity Services Excel Services PerformancePoint Services And in covering each of these topics, we ensure that a general layout was followed for each topic, to ensure completeness of content. We make sure we cover Setup related issues and advice Point and click usage Code usage, i.e. extensibility using visual studio and a walkthrough of the administration side of things, including powershell. (Yes, I insisted on that in being there in every chapter). Writing a book is always a lot of work, so we hope you find it useful. And it should go very well with the other book I just reviewed, which is Microsoft ADO.NET 4, step by step. Comment on the article ....

• Restoring MSDB

  We recently performed a disaster recovery exercise which included the restoration of the MSDB database onto our DR server.  I did a quick google to see if there were any special considerations and found the following MS article.  Considerations for Restoring the model and msdb Databases (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms190749(v=sql.105).aspx).   It said both the original and replacement servers must be on the same version,  I double-checked and in my case they are both SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 (10.50.2500).. So I went ahead and stopped SQL Server agent, restored the database and restarted the agent.  Checked the jobs and they were all there, everything looked great, and was until the server was rebooted a few days later.Then the syspolicy_purge_history job started failing on the 3rd step with the error message “Unable to start execution of step 3 (reason: The PowerShell subsystem failed to load [see the SQLAGENT.OUT file for details]; The job has been suspended). The step failed.”   A bit more googling pointed me to the msdb.dbo.syssubsystems table SELECT * FROM msdb.dbo.syssubsystems WHERE start_entry_point ='PowerShellStart'   And in particular the value for the subsystem_dll. It still had the path to the SQLPOWERSHELLSS.DLL but on the old server. The DR instance has a different name to the live instance and so the paths are different.   This was quickly fixed with the following SQL Use msdb; GO sp_configure 'allow updates', 1 ; RECONFIGURE WITH OVERRIDE ; GO UPDATE msdb.dbo.syssubsystems SET subsystem_dll='C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10_50.DR\MSSQL\binn\SQLPOWERSHELLSS.DLL' WHERE start_entry_point ='PowerShellStart'; GO sp_configure 'allow updates', 0; RECONFIGURE WITH OVERRIDE ; GO Stopped and started SQL Server agent and now the job completes.   I then wondered if anything else might be broken, SELECT subsystem_dll FROM msdb.dbo.syssubsystems Shows a further 10 wrong paths – fortunately for parts of SQL (replication, SSIS etc) we aren’t using! Lessons Learnt 1.       DR exercises are a good thing! 2.       Keep the Live and DR environments as similar as possible.

• Is Cygwin or Windows Command Prompt preferable for getting a consistent terminal experience for development?

  The question: Which is better, installing cygwin or one of its cousins on all my windows machines to have a consistent terminal experience across all my development machines, or becoming well trained in the skill of mentally switching from linux terminal to windows command prompt? Systems I use: OSX Lion on a Macbook Air Windows 8 on a desktop Windows 7 on the same desktop Fedora 16 on the same desktop What I'm trying to accomplish Configure an entirely consistent (or consistent enough) terminal experience across all my machines. "enough" in this context is clearly subjective. Please be clear in your answer why the configuration you suggest is consistent enough. One more thing to keep in mind: While I do write a lot of code intended to run on Windows (actually code that runs on Windows Phone which necessitates a windows machine), I also write a lot of Java code, and prefer to do so in vim. I test a local repo in Java on my windows machine, and push to another test machine running ubuntu later in the development stage. When I push to the ubuntu machine, I'm exclusively in terminal, since I'm accessing it via SSH. Summary, with more accurate question: Is there a good way to accomplish what I'm trying to do, or is it better to get accustomed to remembering different commands based on the system I'm on? Which (if either) is considered "best practice" by the development community? Alternatively, for a consistent development experience, would it be better to write all my code SSHed into another machine, and move things to windows for compile / build only when I needed to? That seems like too much work... but could be a solution. Update: While there are insightful responses below, I have yet to hear an answer that talks about why any given solution is superior. Cygwin/GnuWin32 is certainly a way to accomplish a similar experience on all platforms, but since I'm just learning all things command line, I don't want to set myself up to do a lot of relearning/unlearning in the future. Cygwin/GnuWin32 has its peculiarities I would imagine, and being aware of how that set up works on Windows is a learning curve. Additionally, using Cygwin/GnuWin32 robs me of learning the benefits of PowerShell. As a newcomer to working in a command line, which path should I choose to minimize having to relearn/unlearn things in the future? or as my first paragraph poses: [is it better to use Cygwin] ...or [become] well trained in the skill of mentally switching from linux terminal to windows command prompt?

• Can working exclusively with niche apps or tech hurt your career in software development? How to get out of the cycle? [closed]

  I'm finding myself in a bit of a pickle. I've been at a pretty comfortable IT group for almost a decade. I got my start here working on web development, mostly CRUD, but have demonstrated the ability to figure out more complex problems. I'm not a rock star, but I have received many compliments on my programming aptitude, and technologists and architects have commented on my ability to pick things up (for example, I recently learned a very popular web framework that shall remain nameless since I don’t want to be identified). My problem is that, over time, my responsibilities have been shifting towards work such as support or ‘development’ with some rather niche products (afraid to mention here due to potential for being identified). Some of this work, if it includes anything resembling coding, is very menial scripting in languages such as Powershell or VBScript. The vast majority of the time, however, a typical day consists of going back and forth with the product’s vendor support to send them logs and apply configuration changes or patches they recommend. I’m basically starved for some actual software development. However, even though I’m more than capable of doing that development work (and actually do a much better job at it than anything else), our boss is more interested in the kind of work I mentioned above, her reasoning being that since no one else in the organization wants to do it, it must mean job security. This has been going on for close to 3 years, and the only reason I have held on is on the promise that we would eventually get more development projects assigned to us. Well, that turned out not to be true at all. A recent talk with the boss has just made it more explicitly clear, as she told me in no uncertain terms that it’s very likely that development work (web or otherwise) would go to another group. The reason given to me is that our we don’t have enough resources in our group to handle that. So now I find myself in the position that I either have to stay in what has essentially become a dead end IT job that is tied to the fortunes of a niche stack of apps, or try to find a position that will be better for my long term career. My problem (is it a problem?), however, is that compared to others, my development projects in the last three years are very sparse in number. To compound things, projects using the latest and most popular frameworks, amount to the big fat number of just one—with no work of that kind in the foreseeable future. I am very concerned that this sparseness in my resume is a deficit, and that it will hurt my chances of landing a different job. I’m also wondering how much it will hurt me, and whether that can be ameliorated with hobby projects of my own. I guess I’m looking for opinions. Thank you very much for reading.

• Keeping your options open in a cloud solution

  In on-premises solutions we have the full range of options open for a given computing solution – but we don’t always take advantage of them, for multiple reasons. Data goes in a Relational Database Management System, files go on a share, and e-mail goes to the Exchange server. Over time, vendors (including ourselves) add in functionality to one product that allow non-standard use of the platform. For example, SQL Server (and Oracle, and others) allow large binary storage in or through the system – something not originally intended for an RDBMS to handle. There are certainly times when this makes sense, of course, but often these platform hammers turn every problem into a nail. It can make us “lazy” in our design – we sometimes don’t take the time to learn another architecture because the one we’ve spent so much time with can handle what we want to do. But there’s a distinct danger here. In nature, when a population shares too many of the same traits, it can cause a complete collapse if a situation exploits a weakness shared by that population. The same is true with not using the righttool for the job in a computing environment. Your company or organization depends on your knowledge as a professional to select the best mix of supportable, flexible, cost-effective technologies to solve their problems, whether you’re in an architect role or not.  So take some time today to learn something new. The way I do this is to select a given problem, and try to solve it with a technology I’m not familiar with. For instance – create a Purchase Order system in Excel, then in Hadoop or MongoDB, or even in flat-files using PowerShell as an interface. No, I’m not suggesting any of these architectures are the proper way to solve the PO problem, but taking something concrete that you know well and applying that meta-knowledge to another platform will assist you in exercising the “little grey cells” and help you and your organization understand what is open to you. And of course you can do all of this on-premises – but my recommendation is to check out a cloud platform (my suggestion would of course be Windows Azure :) ) and try it there. Most providers (including Microsoft) provide free time to do that.

• Creating a Yes/No MessageBox in a NuGet install/uninstall script

  Sometimes getting a little feedback during the install/uninstall process of a NuGet package could be really useful. Instead of accounting for all possible ways to install your NuGet package for every user, you can simplify the installation by clarifying with the user what they want. This example shows how to generate a windows yes/no message box to get input from the user in the PowerShell install or uninstall script. We’ll use the prompt on the uninstall to confirm if the user wants to delete a custom setting that the initial install placed in their configuration.  Obviously you could use the prompt in any way you want. The objects of the message box are generated similar to the controls in the code behind of a WinForm. • ActionScript/Flex ArrayCollection of Number objects to Java Collection<Long> using BlazeDS

  Hello, I am using Flex 3 and make a call through a RemoteObject to a Java 1.6 method and exposed with BlazeDS and Spring 2.5.5 Integration over a SecureAMFChannel. I worked around this issue by looping through the collection using Object instead, checking to see if it is an Integer, cast it to one, then do a .longValue() on it then add it to a temp ArraList. Yuk. The big problem is my application is supposed to handle records in the billions from a DB and the id will overflow the 2.147 billion limit of an integer. I would love to have BlazeDS or the JavaAdapter in it, translate the ActionScript Number to a Long as specified in the method. I hate that even though I use the generic the underlying element type of the collection is an Integer. If this was straight Java, it wouldn't compile. Any ideas are appreciated. Solutions are even better! :)

• JBOSS 7 encoding not working as expected

  I had problems with my listgrids not showing diacritcs corectly and I found out that when I inserted from java into the db the values where already bugged. A post here helped and I changed my project properties - Text encoding - other - UTF-8 and this fixed my problem. Thing is this only fixes my problem locally. What I need to do is on my Jboss server also set the encoding somehow.   I'm not sure if this is possible, and I'm quite new to using assemblies in C#.NET. What I would like to do is to create an instance of a class when supplied the string name of that class. Any thoughts? Not exactly sure why it can't find the assembly; I've added a reference to the assembly and I use a Using Directive for the namespace in the assembly. As for the protection level, it's calling classes (or rather the constructors of classes) which can only be public. Any clues on where the problem is? The new compiler error is this: Cannot convert type 'System.Runtime.Remoting.ObjectHandle' to 'MyAssembly.AbstractType' The line it references is this one: var myObject = (AbstractType) Activator.CreateInstance(null, myTypeName); Using .Unwrap() get's me past this error and I think it's the right way to do it (uncertain). However, when running the program I then get a TypeLoadException when this code is called. TypeLoadException: Could not load type ‘AbstractType’ from assembly ‘MyNameSpace'... Right away I can spot that the type its looking for is correct but the assembly it's looking in is wrong. Looking up the Activator.CreateInstance(String, String) method revealed that the null as the first argument means that the method will look in the executing assembly. This is contrary to the required behavior as in the original post. I've tried using MyAssembly as the first argument but this produces the error: 'MyAssembly' is a 'namespace' but is used like a 'variable' Any thoughts on how to fix this?

• A Security (encryption) Dilemma

  I have an internal WPF client application that accesses a database. The application is a central resource for a Support team and as such includes Remote Access/Login information for clients. At the moment this database is not available via a web interface etc, but one day is likely to. The remote access information includes the username and passwords for the client's networks so that our client's software applications can be remotely supported by us. I need to store the usernames and passwords in the database and provide the support consultants access to them so that they can login to the client's system and then provide support. Hope this is making sense. So the dilemma is that I don't want to store the usernames and passwords in cleartext on the database to ensure that if the DB was ever compromised, I am not then providing access to our client's networks to whomever gets the database. I have looked at two-way encryption of the passwords, but as they say, two-way is not much different to cleartext as if you can decrypt it, so can an attacker... eventually. The problem here is that I have setup a method to use a salt and a passcode that are stored in the application, I have used a salt that is stored in the db, but all have their weaknesses, ie if the app was reflected it exposes the salts etc. How can I secure the usernames and passwords in my database, and yet still provide the ability for my support consultants to view the information in the application so they can use it to login? This is obviously different to storing user's passwords as these are one way because I don't need to know what they are. But I do need to know what the client's remote access passwords are as we need to enter them in at the time of remoting to them. Anybody have some theories on what would be the best approach here? update The function I am trying to build is for our CRM application that will store the remote access details for the client. The CRM system provides call/issue tracking functionality and during the course of investigating the issue, the support consultant will need to remote in. • Hyper-V Server 2012 - "No Active Network Adapter Found"

  I just installed Hyper-V Server 2012 and first thing I get when logging in to the host is "No Active Network Adapter Found". I know I have to use the following command: pnputil –i –a <inf file> I found the Realtek Network Driver for my MB for Windows 7 here: http://za.asus.com/Motherboards/AMD_AM3Plus/M5A97_PRO/#download But there is not one for Windows 8 so I tried using the Win 7 one with PnPUtil, and I got: Failed to install the driver on any of the devices on the system: No more data is available. Does this really mean I can't use Hyper-V Server 2012 with my motherboard? This is hard to believe because I installed Windows Server 2012 directly (prior to installing Hyper-V Server 2012) on this same computer and I had internet access on that server without even configuring any drivers. Ok so I went to PowerShell from cmd and typed Get-NetIPConfiguration And it said the name of my driver (Realtek) and "Disconnected". I switched the Ethernet wire from my primary computer with my server and everything was fixed. Interestingly, my primary computer connects to the internet just fine with the wire that was previously in the server, just with much slower speed. Does anyone know what could be the difference between these 2 Ethernet wires?

  Struggling to get MSMQ installed in Domain Integration mode on Windows 2012 (Azure). So far, I've provisioned a brand new Windows Server 2012 (R2) machine on the Azure platform and installed the Active Directory role and promoted the machine to a domain controller. Once the AD was in place, I then added the MSMQ feature, along with the Directory Integration add on. However, it will not install in AD integration mode. It will only work in Workgroup mode. I can verify this by running the following powershell command: New-MSMQQueue -name Queue1 -queuetype Public When I run this command, I get the following error: New-MsmqQueue : A workgroup installation computer does not support the operation. The event viewer reveals to errors in the Application log: 1. The Message Queuing service failed to join the computer's domain 'DOMAIN'. Error 0xc00e0025: 2. Message Queuing was unable to create the msmq (MSMQ Configuration) object in Active Directory Domain Services. Error c00e0025h: I'm struggling here. Any advice?

• Configuring Jenkins for running with BitBucket

I've already gone through the major well know problems generating the ssh keys,uploading them in BitBucket,performing an ssh connection by console for adding the host to the well know list (you can find all my adventure here and here).   Posted this question on stackoverflow but then got instructed to post it here: I was using Rapid7's Nexpose to scan one of our web servers (windows server 2008), and got a vulnerability for timestamp response. According to Rapid7, timestamp response shall be disabled: http://www.rapid7.com/db/vulnerabilities/generic-tcp-timestamp So far I have tried several things: Edit the registry, add a "Tcp1323Opts" key to HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters, and set it to 0. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc938205.aspx Use this command: netsh int tcp set global timestamps=disabled Tried powershell command: Set-netTCPsetting -SettingName InternetCustom -Timestamps disabled (got error: Set-netTCPsetting : The term 'Set-netTCPsetting' is not recognized as the name of a cmdlet, function, script file, or operable program. Check the spelling of the name, or if a path was included, verify that the path is correct and try again.) None of above attempts was successful, after re-scan we still got the same alert. Rapid7 suggested using a firewall that's capable of blocking it, but we want to know if there is a setting on windows to achieve it. Is it through a specific port? If yes, what is the port number? If not, could you suggest a 3rd party firewall that is capable of blocking it? Thank you very much.

• What do I need in order to extract and combine text files from multiple ZIP files, via command line?

  I've got an interesting scripting challenge in front of me. I'm fairly certain there's a way to do it, but I feel like I'm probably lacking some particular tools and/or functional knowledge. There's some fifty-plus ZIP files that each contain, among other things, text files that need to be merged with one another. The structure is something like this: C:\Reports\FirstJob-1.zip |-MyName |-FirstJob |-1 |-[Some other folders] |-TXTReports |-English |-[Some other files] |-Report.txt C:\Reports\FirstJob-2.zip |-MyName |-FirstJob |-1 |-[Some other folders] |-TXTReports |-English |-[Some other files] |-Report.txt C:\Reports\SecondJob-1.zip |-MyName |-SecondJob |-1 |-[Some other folders] |-TXTReports |-English |-[Some other files] |-Report.txt If I had all the Report.txt files in one regular folder, and uniquely named, I could probably just write a FOR statement that targets *.txt and runs something like type filename.txt >> Consolidated.txt on each. However, these all have the same file name and are embedded deep within separate ZIP files. The potentially useful tools I currently have at my disposal are Windows XP Professional SP3, PowerShell, and WinZip. I'd rather not download or install anything else, but I do understand that third-party tools (or additional tools from Microsoft or WinZip) may be necessary. Whatever tools I use should run natively in Windows. I really don't want to have to mess with Cygwin or other emulators on this system. At the very least, I need a tool that will allow me to analyze and manipulate ZIP files from the command line. Also, are there any other particular complications to this that I've not yet thought of?

• Toshiba laptop cd drive read causes OS to totally freeze

  Okay I'll try to write an understandable summary. Forgive me if I'll fail with that attempt though. So. There is a Toshiba Satellite notebook. Got Windows 7 x86 Professional (OEM) installed on it, everything is fine (okay.. somewhat). The problem. If you put an audio or any kind of disc into the drive, something starts to eat the PC. Back then when the owner told me about this, he put an audio disc into the lappy. Winamp caused the IO load, 100%. Tried taskkill, taskkill /T, tried powershell, EVERYTHING. You just can NOT kill winamp or anything which becomes the blocker at that time. Even if you kill almost everything, laptop won't do a clear shutdown. Also I tried to use the force switch at 'shutdown' from cmd, but no use. (So: At these times you can use the laptop, but the blocker/explorer/disc becomes gray as a non-responding app. You can try to kill them, but that won't work, nor you can shutdown the machine). (Also tried using PID, but no use. For the highest IO I used the "select columns" from Task Manager and enabled the IO columns.) My first hunch was the problematic disc, autoplay and it tries to read tries to read (still shouldn't kill the PC). Disabled autoplay, removed winamp. Tried other software, etc. Everything was ok. Few days later the owner tried to put a disc into the machine and it started to reproduce the same symptoms but with a totally different disc. Uhm what to know. Virus is not an option, protected by BitDefender (valid license) and Spybot. Thanks if you have ANY idea about this strange problem. ps.: For now, the owner uses Daemon tools + Blindwrite as an alternative for those apps which wouldnt start without the disc.

  I'm experiencing "not enough space" error when trying to create system image to a USB hard drive: Detailed error: ERROR - A Volume Shadow Copy Service operation error has occurred: (0x8004231f) Insufficient storage available to create either the shadow copy storage file or other shadow copy data. Blah, blah... There is not enough disk space to create the volume shadow copy on the storage location. Make sure that, for all volumes to be backup up, the minimum required disk space for shadow copy creation is available. This applies to both the backup storage destination and volumes included in the backup. Minimum requirement: For volumes less than 500 megabytes, the minimum is 50 megabytes of free space. For volumes more than 500 megabytes, the minimum is 320 megabytes of free space. Recommended: At least 1 gigabyte of free disk space on each volume if volume size is more than 1 gigabyte. ERROR - A Volume Shadow Copy Service operation error has occurred: (0x8004231f) Insufficient storage available to create either the shadow copy storage file or other shadow copy data. I'd tried both - PowerShell wbAdmin start backup -backupTarget:E: -include:C: -allCritical -quiet and via Control Panel - File History button Clearly both EFI and Windows Recovery Environment partitions don't meet requirements coming from System Image tool (pic below) On top of that all system partitions are now shown as 100% free in Disk Management, it's disturbing but far from the actual state. My question is - hot to create System Image in Windows 8.1?

• Windows 2008 R2 forgets static IP configuration after reboot

  I've got an issue where a Windows 2008 R2 Standard (SP1) server loses its static IP configuration upon a reboot. It's a sysprep'd image. The following steps reproduces the problem: Using the SAC, set the IP using 'i' Use the Win32 EnableStatic() method to set an IP (and then SetGateways()) through PowerShell Reboot The machine boots up with the following configuration: Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : [...] Autoconfiguration IPv4 Address. . : 169.254.152.31 (incorrect) Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.0.0 (incorrect, was set to /24) Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 1.1.1.1 (correct) Occasionally, the gateway is also incorrect (0.0.0.0) The images have a script that runs 'netsh int ip reset' after sysprep finishes (before the reboot), so it appears that does not solve the issue. (the problem also happens without this step) After the reboot, using 'i' on the SAC resolves the issue permanently. (But I'd like to know the root cause as having to run 'i' again isn't ideal)

• Elevating UAC via .bat file?

  Pretty straightforward one that I'm having trouble finding an answer to. serverfault previously helped me with finding a way to automate Windows updates without using WSUS. It's working fantastically, but to run it over the network, you have to first mount a shared drive. That's pretty simple XP since you just mount the drive and run the updater. On Vista and W7, though, this all has to be done with elevated privileges to work correctly. The UAC account can't see network drives mounted by the regular user, so in order to get everything working, I have to mount the share via net use from an escalated shell. I'd like to automate mounting this share and launching the updater via a simple .bat file. I could probably just instruct everybody to right click "Run as Administrator" on the .bat file, but I'd like to keep things as simple as possible and have the .bat automatically prompt the user to escalate their privileges. Since these computers don't belong to us, I can't count on anything like Powershell being installed, so that rules any solution along those lines out and pretty much have to rely on things that would be included in an RTM Vista install. I'm hoping I'm mostly missing something obvious here. :)

• Programmatically add/delete users in Exchange

  I've got the following set up: ASP.Net site that allows my internal employees to add in new hire information (no secure data, just stuff like name/address/phone) and when they submit this it goes into a database (SQL). Every few minutes a service runs that checks the database and if there are new entries it will add them into Exchange. The issue is I'm not happy with the way the service is doing things, (It's not putting address, etc in it). As I don't have the source code this I'm thinking of recreating it. My issue though is finding a starting point even. I know I'll have to create the scripts through code where the data is retrieved from SQL : Joe Smith 123 Main Street Nowhere, USA 19999 And put that into a powershell cmdlet (not sure exactly the syntax but I can get that figured out unless someone already has it) where the user is created in the Active Directory as a normal user and the mailbox is created simultaneously. From there I just need to fill out fields in Active Directory with the person's address, etc. Finally a deletion routine for when we terminate someone, however I'm sure that it will simply be a cmdlet that is easily shelled out to much like the initial one is, once I can figure out how to start that... Anyone have some good reference points or have already done it and can share?

• PsExec and Remote Environment Variables, Logging, Etc.

  When I run PsExec on a remote computer, I always fall short of what I want. What I would like ideally in most situations is a) a log on an admin server where each individual log has the name of each the remote computer it was generated from (e.g. COMPNAME1.log, COMPNAME2.log, etc.) or b) a log file on each remote computer with whatever name I specify. When I try scenario (a), I use the following command. %SystemDrive%\path\to\psexec.exe @listofcomputers.txt -u DOMAIN\username cmd /c echo TEST >> \\server.company.tld\share\%computername%.log Problem is that it never works. All the computers just write to the log where %computername% is just the computer I execute PsExec from in my office. What I want are unique logs for each computer specific in the listofcomputers.txt that will correctly use the hostname from the remote environment variable without issue. Is that even possible? It does not seem to work for me. I tried this, and the syntax is clearly wrong. %SystemDrive%\path\to\psexec.exe @listofcomputers.txt -u DOMAIN\username "cmd /c echo TEST >> \\server.company.tld\share\%computername%.log" PsExec just fails saying the system file cannot be found (read: syntax fail). As for scenario (b), it appears to be a variation of a similar problem. When I run a command like this, it does not work. %SystemDrive%\path\to\psexec.exe @listofcomputers.txt -u DOMAIN\username "cmd /c echo %computername% >> \\server.company.tld\share\aggregated.log" Is there something I do not understand about remote path and environment variables with PsExec on the cmd.exe console (I have not even tried the dreaded PowerShell yet). I know such things work in a batch file (cmd /c \\server.company.tld\share\runthis.bat), but is there a reason it will not work when executing commands as arguments? I always need this, and can never get it!
