• Upgrades from Beta or CTP SQL Server Software is NOT Supported

  As of this writing, SQL Server 2008 R2 has released, and just like every release, I get e-mails and calls from folks with this question: “Can I upgrade from Customer Technical Preview (CTP) x or Beta #x or Release Candidate (RC) to the “Released to Manufacturing” (RTM) version?” No. Right up until the last minute, things are changing in the code – and you want that to happen. Our internal testing runs right up until the second we lock down for release, and we watch the CTP/RC/Beta reports to make sure there are no show-stoppers, and fix what we find. And it’s not just “big” changes you need to worry about – a simple change in one line of code can have a massive effect. I know, I know – you’ve possibly upgraded an RC or CTP to the RTM version and it worked “just fine”. But hear this tale: I’ve dealt with someone who faced this exact situation in SQL Server 2008. They upgraded (which is clearly prohibited in the documentation) from a CTP to the RTM version over a year ago. Everything was working fine. But then…one day they had an issue. Couldn’t fix it themselves, we took a look, days went by, and we finally had to call in the big guns for support. Turns out, the upgrade was the problem. So we had to come up with some elaborate schemes to get the system migrated over while they were in production. This was painful for everyone involved. So the answer is still no. Just don’t do it. There is one caveat to this story – if you are a “TAP” customer (you’ll know if you are), we help you move from the CTP products to RTM, but that’s a special case that we track carefully and send along special instructions and tools to help you along. That level of effort isn’t possible on a large scale, so it’s not just a magic tool that we run to upgrade from CTP to RTM. So again, unless you’re a TAP customer, it’s a no-no. • How do you conquer the challenge of designing for large screen real-estate?

  This question is a bit more subjective, but I'm hoping to get some new perspective. I'm so used to designing for a certain screen size (typically 1024x768) that I find that size to not be a problem. Expanding the size to 1280x1024 doesn't buy you enough screen real estate to make an appreciable difference, but will give me a little more breathing room. Basically, I just expand my "grid size" and the same basic design for the slightly smaller screen still works. However, in the last couple of projects my clients were all using 1080p (1920x1080) screens and they wanted solutions to use as much of that real estate as possible. 1920 pixels across provides just under twice the width I am used to, and the wide screen makes some of my old go to design approaches not to work as well. The problem I'm running into is that when presented with so much space, I'm confronted with some major problems. How many columns should I use? The wide format lends itself to a 3 column split with a 2:1:1 split (i.e. the content column bigger than the other two). However, if I go with three columns what do I do with that extra column? How do I make efficient use of the screen real estate? There's a temptation to put everything on the screen at once, but too much information actually makes the application harder to use. White space is important to help make sense of complex information, but too much makes related concepts look too separate. I'm usually working with web applications that have complex data, and visualization and presentation is key to making sense of the raw data. When your user also has a large screen (at least 24"), some information is out of eye sight and you need to move the pointer a long distance. How do you make sure everything that's needed stays within the visual hot points? Simple sites like blogs actually do better when the width is constrained, which results in a lot of wasted real estate. I kind of wonder if having the text box and the text preview side by side would be a big benefit for the admin side of that type of screen? (1:1 two column split). For your answers, I know almost everything in design is "it depends". What I'm looking for is: General principles you use How your approach to design has changed I'm finding that i have to retrain myself how to work with this different format. Every bump in resolution I've worked through to date has been about 25%: 640 to 800 (25% increase), 800 to 1024 (28% increase), and 1024 to 1280 (25% increase). However, the jump from 1280 to 1920 is a good 50% increase in space--the equivalent from jumping from 640 straight to 1024. There was no commonly used middle size to help learn lessons more gradually.

• Remote Graphics Diagnostics with Windows RT 8.1 and Visual Studio 2013

While writing that post I was testing out various features to try to make sure everything worked as expected. I had some trouble getting Remote Graphics Diagnostics (a/k/a remote graphics debugging) working on my first generation Surface RT (upgraded to Windows RT 8.1). It was more strange since I could use remote debugging when doing CPU debugging; it was just graphics debugging that was causing trouble. After some discussions with the great folks who work on the graphics tools in Visual Studio, they were able to repro the problem and recommend a solution. My Surface RT needed the ARM Kits policy installed on it. Once I followed the instructions on the previous link, I could successfully use Remote Graphics Diagnostics on my Surface RT. Please note that this requires Windows RT 8.1 RTM (i.e. not Preview) and that Remote Graphics Diagnostics on ARM only works when you are using Visual Studio 2013 as it is a new feature (it should work just fine using the Express for Windows version). Also, when I installed the ARM Kits policy I needed to do two things to get it to work properly. First, when following the “How to install the Kits policy” instructions, I needed to copy the SecureBoot folder into Program Files on my Surface RT (specifically, I copied the SecureBoot folder to “C:\Program Files\Windows Kits\8.1\bin\arm\” on my Surface RT, creating any necessary directories). It may work if it’s in any system folder; I didn’t test any others after I got it working. I had initially put it in my Downloads folder and tried installing it from there. When the machine restarted it displayed a worrisome error message. I repeatedly pressed the button that would allow me to retry and eventually the machine rebooted and managed to recover itself to its previous state. Second, I needed to install it as an Administrator. The instructions say that this might be necessary. For me it was. This is a Remote Graphics Diagnostics is a great new feature in Visual Studio 2013 so I definitely encourage all of you to check it out!

This is useful to do when we write if{} else {} statement and this is not helpful on that case. 7. Package manager > General > browse > copy the location of cache folder and in package source add them as source. This way you can use package that you have use earlier when you are offline. • Summary of our Recent Pull Request Enhancements on CodePlex

  Over the past several weeks, we’ve been incrementally rolling out a bunch of enhancements around our pull request workflow for Git and Mercurial projects. Our goal is to make contributing to open source projects a simple and rewarding experience, and we’ll continue to invest in this area. Here’s a summary of the changes so far, in case you’ve missed them. As always, if you have any feedback, please let us know, whether on our ideas page or via Twitter. Support for branches You can now pick the source and destination branches for your pull request, whether you’re sending one from your fork, or using it within a project to collaborate with your other trusted contributors. A redesigned creation experience Our old pull request creation form was rather lacking. It asked for a title and comment in a small modal dialog, but that was about it. We knew we could do better, so we rethought the experience. Now, when you create a pull request, you’re taken to a new page that let’s you select the source and destination, and gives you information on the diffs and commits that you’re sending, so you can confirm that you’re sending the right set of changes. Inline code snippets in discussion If users comment on code in your pull request, we now display a preview of the snippet of relevant code inline with their comment on the discussion. Subsequent replies on that line are combined in a single thread to preserve your context. No more clicking and hunting to find where the comments are. And you can add another inline comment right from the discussion area. Comment notifications You can now elect receive an e-mail notification if a user comments on your pull request. If it’s on a line of code, we’ll display the relevant code snippet in the e-mail. Redesigned diff viewer Our old diff viewer hadn’t been touched in a while, and was in need of an update. We started with a visual facelift to use standard red/green colors for additions/deletions and remove the noisy “dots” that represented spaces and that littered the diff viewer. Based on feedback that the viewable region for diffs was too small, especially for smaller screen resolutions, we revamped the way the viewport for the code is sized, and now expand it to fill the majority of the browser height when scrolling down. The set of improvements we implemented here also apply anywhere diffs are viewed, not just for pull requests.

  Trying to install TFS on my computer in order to make a demonstration. I can't figure out what else can I do to solve these errors: Information [ System Checks ] TF255142: Windows Firewall is not enabled. If you enable Windows Firewall after configuring Team Foundation Server, you must add exceptions for ports used by Team Foundation Server to Windows Firewall. Error [ Application Tier ] TF255120: Compatibility mode for Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0 is not enabled. Team Foundation Server requires this on this operating system. Error [ Application Tier ] TF255456: You must configure Internet Information Services (IIS) to use the Static Content component. Team Foundation Server requires the Static Content component in IIS. Error [ Application Tier ] TF255397: Windows Authentication has not been configured as a role service in Internet Information Services (IIS). Team Foundation Server requires that Windows Authentication is installed as one of the role services in IIS. • Windows 8 and SMB2 Issues

  We're playing with the consumer preview of Windows 8 and having issues accessing some network shares in our environment. Basically, when I attempt to access a share directly (\[SERVER].[DOMAIN].[NETWORK]\Share$) I get 'An extended error has occured'. The shares reside on an EMC Celerra system. Sorry, I don't really have much more information about it (this is just a little side project). Accessing shares that reside on Windows machines are fine. The Firewall is completley disabled and I am running under full domain administrative credentials. A quick wireshark shows the following group of packets between myself and the server: SMB2 164 NegotiateProtocol Request SMB2 274 NegotiateProtocol Response SMB2 981 SessionSetup Request SMB2 281 SessionSetup Response SMB2 200 TreeConnect Request Tree: \\[SERVER].[DOMAIN].[NETWORK]\[SHARE]$ SMB2 138 TreeConnect Response SMB2 202 Ioctl Request NETWORK_FILE_SYSTEM Function:0x0080 SMB2 131 Ioctl Response, Error: STATUS_INVALID_DEVICE_REQUEST SMB2 126 SessionLogoff Request SMB2 126 SessionLogoff Respons This repeats five times and then (I assume) Windows throws me the above error. A quick Google shows me: 0xC0000010 STATUS_INVALID_DEVICE_REQUEST The specified request is not a valid operation for the target device. Which shows me that NETWORK_FILE_SYSTEM Function:0x0080 request is invalid.. Does anyone know what would cause this? Thanks in advance. Rhys. Edit: FYI - as a workaround, you can disable SMB 2.2 as noted in the EMC thread: sc config lanmanworkstation depend= bowser/mrxsmb10/nsi sc config mrxsmb20 start= disabled This will allow the machine to access the shares. The below answer still stands though :)

• How do I fix libdispatch problem crashing Mac OS X apps?

  In the last day I have started having a lot of brokenness on my Mac (MacBook Air running Mac OS X 10.6.2 with all software updates). Most noticably, iTunes no longer syncs with my iPhone. It fails with a crash dialog reporting "AppleMobileDeviceHelper quit unexpectedly" and an error dialog "iTunes was unable to load dataclass information from SyncServices. Reconnect or try again later." I've attempted the fix at support.apple.com/kb/HT1747 but it failed. I've also been having problems (at first seemingly unrelated) with the horrible Cisco VPN client, which started giving me this error: Error 51: Unable to communicate with the VPN subsystem I followed the steps at www.anders.com/cms/192/CiscoVPN/Error.51:.Unable.to.communicate.with.the.VPN.subsystem which don't seem to work for me, although I can connect if I use the command line with sudo : sudo vpnclient connect MyProfile I had a look in the Console app at the diagnostic messages and I noticed a pattern, that a number of apps were reporting "BUG IN CLIENT OF LIBDISPATCH". The affected programs are: AppleMobileBackup AppleMobileDeviceHelper Safari Webpage Preview Fetcher cvpnd (the Cisco VPN daemon) Of these, only the last is non-Apple software! The common text in the diagnostic messages is: Exception Type: EXC_BAD_INSTRUCTION (SIGILL) Exception Codes: 0x0000000000000001, 0x0000000000000000 Crashed Thread: 1 Dispatch queue: com.apple.libdispatch-manager Application Specific Information: BUG IN CLIENT OF LIBDISPATCH: Do not close random Unix descriptors I'm beginning to wonder if there's a permissions problem, or corruption of an important library, ... I should note that I've rebooted several times and verified the disk permissions and the disk. Any help would be great!

• BOOTMGR is compressed

  So I've just finished messing up my computer beyond repair. I originally had a Windows 7 install on my 64GB SSD and all my data on my 1.5TB HDD. So I decided to install Windows 8 Consumer Preview. I tried to clone my 64GB SSD onto my HDD; but that didn't work either at first. I later learned that it wiped all my data off of it. Thank goodness for the cloud. So I retried the cloning after I realized that my data was gone, and I finished it. So I rebooted and got a cryptic error message: BOOTMGR is compressed. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart. So I did. Several times. I followed the instructions to rebuild the bootmanager from many websites, including HowToGeek, smallvoid.com, and more. None worked. BTW, I've lost my Windows 7 Professional DVDs. All I have is my Windows 7 Home Premium DVD. It's the one I got with my laptop. How can I get back to a working computer? I'm willing to wipe anything, as my data is all in the cloud.

• Powershell: Execute exe on remote server and capture output

  I am trying to script the execution of an installer on remote web servers. The installer in question is also a Windows Service that hosts NServiceBus. If RDP'd into the server, the application is installed by the following command: &"$theInstaller" /install /serviceName:TheServiceName The installer prints output about its progress registering the service and connecting to the database to stdout, among other things. This works fine from an RDP session, but when I execute it remotely via PS, I get a you-can't-do-this-over-the-network message if I execute it directly or via Invoke-Command -computername $theRemoteServer: System.IO.FileLoadException: Could not load file or assembly 'file://\\theRemoteServer\c$ \thePath\AutoMapper.dll' or one of its dependencies. Operation is not supported. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131515) --- System.NotSupportedException: An attempt was made to load an assembly from a network location which would have caused the assembly to be sandboxed in previous versions of the .NET Framework. This release of the .NET Framework does not enable CAS policy by default, so this load may be dangerous. If this load is not intended to sandbox the assembly, please enable the loadFromRemoteSources switch. See http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=155569 for more information. (Note: I added an additional "\" to the path in the first line in order to get it to show up correctly in the preview on this site.) This, and other DLLs, are loaded by the service, and the service's execution context cannot, apparently, be remotified.   Hello, I had a problem and after some research I discovered the exactly point where is failing. blog.domain.com Is not working, it says that the page cannot be found (404) blog.domain.com/index.php Working as expected If you click on Home, it will says that the page cannot be found, if you try to preview a new post, it says that the page cannot be found... I can see every post btw. I run my blog on a Windows hosting using IIS. my permalink is this: /index.php/%postname% IIRC I had to use index.php because my IIS doesn't have URL rewriting. I have no problem with the index.php thing on the url, I have now a good SEO and I don't want to change my permalink but I Don't know why is not working now... just from one day to the next... It's a problem of WP or is just my host messing up? If is my blog, do you know what is causing this? (Just for create a concrete ticket about the exactly problem) Thank you.

• On Windows XP, Start > Run "My Documents" sometimes doesn't work

  On all of my home computers, I can enter "my documents" into the Start Run prompt and the My Documents folder of the current profile will open up. What's more, I can continue typing subfolders, files, etc. and auto-complete works and it's smart and enjoyable. I can't check at the moment, but I'm almost positive entries like "My Pictures" and "My Music" also go to their correct folders. On my work computers, if I enter "my documents" into the Start Run prompt, I get the following error: "Windows cannot find 'my'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start Button, and then click Search." I can sort of circumvent this by creating a shortcut in my PATH named 'my' that points to My Documents folder, but this doesn't solve the auto-complete option (and it's otherwise imperfect, of course, because "my pictures" or "my music" all direct to the same place. • Mac OS X duplex printing problem: one- vs. multi-paged documents

  I like to print on pre-printed stationery using the Preview.app and a duplex-capable HP Color Laserjet 4700 (PostScript) printer. The print dialog handles one and two-paged documents differently: the paper needs to be placed differently into the tray if the document contains one page versus when it contains two pages. This is not obvious when printing on plain paper but becomes obvious when front and reverse side of sheets are marked. Otherwise the first page would end up on the reverse side of the first sheet. I believe the problem is caused by the printer driver setting duplex printing to false (using the PostScript setpagedevice operator) when emitting a single-page document versus keeping it set to true when emitting multi-page documents. All this despite that duplex printing is always specified in the printer dialog. When printing a single-sided document, duplex=true and duplex=false seem to make a difference with respect which side of a sheet gets printed on. It would be also helpful if others could confirm the problem actually exists. I suspect this problem is not limited to specific printers. I'm on OS X 10.6 and I checked two different HP printers.

• Windows 8 keeps signing out

  Ran into a strange problem with Windows 8 Pro. Last night i installed Windows 8 Pro as an upgrade on a Sony Vaio laptop that had Windows 7 Pro on it. The install seemed to go okay. Then once installed, live tiles seem to work, native/Metro apps will start okay, but pretty soon after going into an app or settings, the screen flashes a few times and we're back to the lock screen. Signing in appears to do a full login. I've tried this with a local account and with a live.com account. This is someone else's laptop, so we decided to let it breathe, in case the install was still settling in. Well, they say today it's doing the same thing. Open the music app, and within a minute it's back to signon/lock screen. However, they can go to the actual Desktop and run Zune to play music, and it seems happy. In the past, i've installed retail Windows 8 Pro clean on a homebrew system, as an upgrade on a Dell laptop with a zillion apps and drivers, neither with any problems. Also, i've had the consumer preview and release candidate installed as well, no problems. Any ideas on what's going on here?

Automated repair from Win8 system recovery disc Ran following commands from cmd started from Win8 system recovery disc bootrec /fixmbr Result : Success message bootrec /rebuildbcd Result : after hitting (Y) "The requested system device cannot be found" System refresh started from Win8 system recovery disc gives error that device is locked. System reset started from Win8 system recovery disc gives error that required partition or device is missing or not accessible. Used automated repair from EasyRE disc. It gave success message. Used Fix boot problem from Macrium reflect winPE repair disc. Copied Recovery partition to usb. Booting from usb gave this error Your PC needs to be repaired. Error Code : 0XC000000f Press Enter to try again Press F8 for Startup Settings F8 & Enter does nothing I cannot install WIn7 or Win 8, error it gives : "windows cannot be installed on this disk. The selected disk is of the GPT partition style."

• Why can't I get out of display mirror mode?

  I've been running Ubuntu (10.04.1 LTS, 64-bit) for a while and just replaced my hardware with a faster machine with an ATI Radeon HD 5700 video card. I've got twin 1920 x 1080 displays. I downloaded the latest driver (ati-driver-installer-10-9-x86.x86_64.run) from the ATI web site and installed that. I've gone through a few rounds of playing with /etc/X11/xorg.conf, and can't get things right. At the moment, it's in display mirroring mode, and I can't figure out how to get it out of mirror mode. If I run Monitor Preferences, there's a "Same image in all monitors" checkbox. If I uncheck that, the little preview window switches to show two monitors. When I click Apply, it asks me to log out and log back in again. When I do that, I'm right back to mirrored mode. What's really weird is that I'm currently running a copy of xorg.conf from a coworker's machine. He's got identical hardware, and his display works fine. So, I'm inclined to think there's something else going on other than the conf file. Any ideas what might be wrong?

• Create a PDF that defaults to flip on short edge when printed double-sided

  We're creating a 2-page PDF brochure with a target audience who will print it on their regular office or home printers. If it is printed on a double-sided printer (common in offices), it'll come out correctly if set manually by the user to "Flip on short edge", but will come out with the second page upside down if default settings are used (flip on long edge). Our target audience aren't very tech-literate, and we've found that even within our own office network there is variation in the location of the 'Flip on short edge' setting - so it isn't realistic to give everyone who downloads the PDF instructions on how to change this setting or to expect everyone to find out how to change the setting off their own backs. So, when creating a PDF (ideally using Adobe InDesign or Acrobat, but if other software or hacking is needed that's fine...), is there a way to configure the PDF file itself so that when printed double-sided with default settings, it flips on the short edge? If possible, it'll be useful supplementary info to know how reliable any such methods are across different PDF readers (e.g. Adobe Reader, Acrobat, Mac Preview, inbuilt browser readers (e.g. chrome), FoxIt, etc). If questions about content creation like this aren't a great fit here, feel free to migrate it to the graphic design stackexchange site - this question seems to fall half way between the two sites
