  It is my understanding that although Mercurial has support from branches, the community generally clone repos instead of creating branches. Similar to the Darcs model, unlike the Git model. I'm deploying a Ruby on Rails app with Capistrano and there I'd like to separate the production from the development branch. Should I point Capistrano to a different repo or should I use branches?

• TSQL syntax to restore .bak to new db

  I need to automate the creation of a duplicate db from the .bak of my production db. I've done the operation plenty of times via the GUI but when executing from the commandline I'm a little confused by the various switches, in particular, the filenames and being sure ownership is correctly replicated. Just looking for the TSQL syntax for RESTORE that accomplishes that. thx

  On LAMP production server I get the 'too many connections' error from MYSQL occasionally, I want to add monitoring to find if the reason is that I exceed the max-connections limit. My question: How can I query from mysql or from mysqladmin the current number of used connections? (I noticed that show status gives total connections and not the currently used ones.)

• "Official" Way to deploy Assemblies into the GAC?

  I just wonder - if I need to deploy an assembly into the GAC, what is the "official" way of doing it? Currently we either manually drag/drop into the c:\windows\assembly folder or we use gacutil.exe. The first way is obviously not the good one (it's manual process after all), and gacutil is part of the SDK and not available per default on production servers. Are there any Microsoft deployment Guidelines?

• Offline product catalog

  I am looking for a way to automate the production of an offline product catalog using product data contained in an SQL Server database. I have thought about using both Crystal Reports and SQL Server Reporting Services for this but there may be something better suited for the job. There is a requirement to display product images also (currently stored in the database). I thought about perhaps doing a simple Word Mail Merge for this but am not sure how I will handle images. • rails assets give TypeError (can't dup NilClass)

  I have a rails 3 app that works fine when run under rails s. However, when trying to deploy it to apache2 with fcgi, the asset pipeline breaks. For example, when trying to request /assets/logo.png the log will show: Started GET "/assets/logo.png" for 10.50.10.249 at Tue Apr 10 19:20:39 -0400 2012 TypeError (can't dup NilClass): This happens on either the production or development environments. How can I debug this?

  I primarily use Tomcat and Glassfish for Java EE development at work, but was wondering if anyone knew of any small application servers like Cassini for ASP.NET that would make building and testing faster? I would still eventually deploy to one of our production tomcat/glassfish servers, but would prefer something that is simpler and quicker.   In my web application I access a private key that is stored in a Java KeyStore. I would like to know what is the best/recommended way to store the password for the KeyStore and private key. I've considered using a properties file but that does not seem very secure for use in a production environment (storing password in a plain text file). Also, hard-coding the password in my code is not an option I'm willing to entertain. Thanks.

  I am developing a website in ASP.NET MVC using C#. It works fine on my machine, however when I load it to the production server it generates an error trying to present the home page. The error is caused by the fact that the ASP system is compiling the .ascx pages using Visual Basic, which, of course, does not work since all of the code is in C#. How do I fix this?
