  • Audio programming resources

    - by rashleighp
I've been very interested in the last few months about getting in to audio programming (I'm from a musical background). I've been a .NET developer for two years and have also done some objective c for an iPhone app recently. I realise I would probably need to work on my C++ chops and have been having a play around with FMOD EX and doing a lot of research into the industry. I was just wondering if anyone could suggest some good resources for audio programming (be they websites, podcasts, books, videos, online courses etc). Anything from Fourier analysis, low level coding, audio engine creation to audio APIs. I just want to learn as much as possible! Thanks in advance.

  • Learning programming

    - by user65862
I am a senior & am a retired R.N., always good at math (50+ yrs ago, but still am). I have been in a computer users group since the mid 90's, & have become moderately advanced in using computers, including trouble-shooting other people's computer problems. Most of my expertise was gained by reading, asking questions, & trying my own trouble-shooting with the help of books & the internet. Now,I would like to take the next step and learn programming. What would be the best way for me to learn programming? Attending classes isn't a practical option, and I'm not in a position to spend much money. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Margaret

  • Good interview programming projects

    - by bigtang
I'm looking for some small programming projects that I can give potential employees to gauge their programming abilities. These will be programmers straight out of college. I'm looking for projects that would take someone a couple of hours and they would email back their answers post-interview. One example would be to take this paragraph of text and return a list of alphabetized unique words. After each word tell me how many times the word appeared and in what sentance(s) the word appreared in. Anyone have any good suggestions?

  • How to get started with programming

    - by S.M.
I have never programmed before. In the 5th grade, I did write very elementary programs using BASIC and that was 7 year back. I wish to learn how to program and I was wondering if someone could please suggest how to get started. For example, I do not know enough to form a judgement on what language should be appropriate to get started. What programming language would you suggest to get started with programming? What are the resources to learn the language you recommend.

  • Free Windows 8 book on programming with html, css and javascript

    - by Dave Noderer
Just a heads up from DevFish (http://devfish.net), a free book on writing applications for Windows 8using html, css and javascript by Kraig Brockschmidt . You can find the book here: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/microsoft_press/archive/2012/10/29/free-ebook-programming-windows-8-apps-with-html-css-and-javascript.aspx I have not finished reading this but so far it looks like it will be a great resource if you have any interest in trying the windows 8 javascript programming model. Besides all the aspects of controls, library support and animations the book also talks about how to make your own components in c#, vb or c++.

  • How does one manage perfectionism in programming? [closed]

    - by Craige
Possible Duplicate: Where do you draw the line for your perfectionism? First of - I'm a perfectionist; I know and accept this. Problem is, this really is a counter-productive programming trait. It's a never-ending endeavor that hinders productivity as you find a new and "better" way you should be doing something. To me, if you're not doing it right, then don't do it at all. How does one manage such a characteristic in programming?

  • Programming languages with extensible syntax

    - by Giorgio
I have only a limited knowledge of Lisp (trying to learn a bit in my free time) but as far as I understand Lisp macros allow to introduce new language constructs and syntax by describing them in Lisp itself. This means that a new construct can be added as a library, without changing the Lisp compiler / interpreter. This approach is very different from that of other programming languages. E.g., if I wanted to extend Pascal with a new kind of loop or some particular idiom I would have to extend the syntax and semantics of the language and then implement that new feature in the compiler. Are there other programming languages outside the Lisp family (i.e. apart from Common Lisp, Scheme, Clojure (?), Racket (?), etc) that offer a similar possibility to extend the language within the language itself?

  • Oracle @Munich Business School

    - by Maria Sandu
Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Last Wednesday, Lisa from the Graduate Recruitment team and her colleague Philipp from Sales visited the Munich Business School to talk about IT challenges, Sales and Career Opportunities at Oracle. Although the talk started at 6:30 pm, the audience of about 100 students was still attentive and curious. First they were provided with some facts about Oracle, then Philipp went into detail and took them through current IT challenges like ‘Social’, ‘Mobile’, ‘Information’ and ‘Cloud’ and how Oracle solutions can help facing these challenges. He also demonstrated what kind of prerequisites and qualifications are required to become a successful Sales person. When talking about his own career, the audience got even more anxious to hear what he would tell them. Finally, students asked questions on career opportunities across Europe or on other topics they were interested in. • Most underestimated programming tool [closed]

    - by Anto
We have many great tools which helps a lot when programming, such as good programmers text editors, IDEs, debuggers, version control systems etc. Some of the tools are more or less "must have" tools for getting the job done (e.g. compilers). There are still always tools which do help a lot, but still don't get so much attention, for various reasons, for instance, when they were released, they were ahead of their time and now are more or less forgotten. What type of programming tool do you think is the most underestimated one? Motivate your answer.

I am 30 years old and I have 7 years experience in system administration, networking. Due to economic downturn it is not so easy find jobs in this sector anymore. I am thinking to leave this career and start programming. I am interested in Java, However I have no programming experience at all. In university we have seen Java which was in 2001-2002. • What is a 'Closure'?

    - by Ben
I asked a question about Currying and closures where mentioned. What is a closure? How does it relate to currying? Additional: Kyle's answer is great but to my poor procedural/OO mind Ben Childs answer is really useful.

  • Generics and Constrained Polymorphism versus Subtyping

    - by Rahul G
Hullo all. In this (Warning: PDF) presentation on Haskell Type Classes, on slide #54, there's this question: Open Question: In a language with generics and constrained polymorphism, do you need subtyping too? My questions are: How do generics and constrained polymorphism make subtyping unnecessary? If generics and constrained polymorphism make subtyping unnecessary, why does Scala have subtyping?

  • Rewriting Live TCP Streams

    - by user213060
I want to rewrite TCP/IP streams. Ettercap's etterfilter command lets you perform simple live replacements of TCP/IP data based on fixed strings or regexes. Example: http://ettercap.sourceforge.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2833 I would like to rewrite streams based on my own filter program instead of just simple string replacements. Anyone have an idea of how to do this? Is there anything other than Ettercap that can do live replacement like this, maybe as a plugin to a VPN software or something? Thanks!

  • how does pipe work

    - by lego69
hello, explain me please how exactly pipe works, for example I have this snippet of the code set line = ($<) while(${#line} != 0) if(${#line} == 5) then echo line | sort | ./calculate ${1} endif set line = ($<) end I need to choose all rows with 5 words and after sort it and after transfer, but I'm confused, how will it work, first of all 'while' will take all information and after that transfer it to sort, or every iteration 'while' will do sort? thanks in advance

  • What do you do when every possible business idea is already taken?

    - by jonathanconway
I have a bit of free time and lots of enthusiasm for software and the web. I want to make a start-up, to sell kind of product or online service, but I'm having a hard time coming up with business ideas that haven't already been implemented. For example, I thought of making an e-ordering website for ordering food from restaurants online. Good thing I typed it into Google, because the market is already full of hundreds of websites doing the same thing and competing heavily. The same thing has happened with so many other business ideas I've become excited and passionate about - they're all taken. What's your response to this? Do you agree that all the good ideas seem to be taken? Or do you think there is room for new businesses, and that I'm just not thinking (or looking) hard enough? Have you ever tried idea after idea, only to find that it was already being done, and you had to move onto something else?
