• Touchpad not working after login in Ubuntu

  At some point my touchpad stopped working on Lenovo x220 under Ubuntu 11.10, after login. I have found two possible solutions for that online, but neither of them work. First, gconftool-2 --set --type boolean /desktop/gnome/peripherals/touchpad/touchpad_enabled true and a second one, xinput set-int-prop "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad" "Synaptics Off" 8 0 After looking more carefully into xinput I have realized that xinput list-props "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad" outputs: Device Enabled (132): 0 This field seems to be stuck to zero, because trying to set it back to 1 by: xinput set-int-prop "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad" "Device Enabled" 8 1 doesn't seem to have any effect, e.g. I still have: Device Enabled (132): 0 Any ideas? • Is it possible to remove buzzing from headphones which occurs only when scrolling / window redrawing?

  Whenever a lot of drawing is happening on my laptop a buzzing noise is emitted by the sound hardware, which is clearly audible with headphones (similar to this question or this one). I've tried both the headphone jack on the laptop itself, and also on the dock. I've used other laptops and they all seem to have similar problems here, which leads me to believe this is more a function of relatively low quality laptop sound hardware than any fault with the headphones or this laptop in particular. I'm curious if there's some piece of hardware I might use to eliminate the buzzing. For instance, would an external USB sound device fix the problem or is it likely subject to the same kinds of issues? Would a simple filter/choke on the headphone cord itself possibly help? Or is one simply stuck with poor quality audio from laptops period?

• Monitor sometimes display weird colors and lines when opening a website that contains a video

  This happens 1/50 times when I open a website that contains a video. I don't know if it happens when I open a flash video, but I am sure it has happened when I've opened a HTML5 video. When it happens I have about 2-3 seconds to press Alt + F4 (to close my browser). If I do it in time the screen will get back to normal. If I wait too long to press Alt + F4, maybe 3+ seconds, my screen won't get back to normal when I press Alt + F4. However, when I get stuck in the weird screen I can do all types of things on the computer. the whole computer does not freeze, because if I for example press Win + L I will hear the Windows logout sound. • why can’t I see my Hardrive for my compaq mini 110c from A windows Xp installation on usb stick?

  I have a Compaq mini 110c-1100dx and I'm having a terrible time trying to reinstall windows. I dont have a external CD drive and REALLY dont want to pay HP 200bux for one. so, I've been TRYING to reinstall WinXP from a flashdrive and I have it to the point where the XP installation gets past the Agreement, but then the netbooks hard drive is not showing up, it's jus giving me the option to install WInXP onto the flash drive, registering as C:. I've tried using nLite to add extra drivers to the WinXP "cd" but I dont think I have the correct HD drivers and I am stuck. ANY help at all be great

• ionice idle is ignored

  I have been testing the ionice command for a while and the idle (3) mode seems to be ignored in most cases. My test is to run both command at the same time: du <big folder> ionice -c 3 du <another big folder> If I check both process in iotop I see no difference in the percentage of io utilization for each process. To provide more information about the CFQ scheduler I'm using a 3.5.0 linux kernel. I started doing this test because I'm experimenting a system lag each time a daily cron job updatedb.mlocate is executed in my Ubuntu 12.10 machine. If you check the /etc/cron.daily/mlocate file you realize that the command is executed like: /usr/bin/ionice -c3 /usr/bin/updatedb.mlocate Also, the funny thing is that whenever my system for some reason starts using swap memory, the updatedb.mlocate io process is been scheduled faster than kswapd0 process, and then my system gets stuck. • Toshiba Satellite A305-S6861 Display Problems

  Well this is the first Laptop I have ever worked on with a dedicated video card. So, there is no video going to the laptops monitor or to an external. Ripped it apart found the gpu and now am stuck. I cant decide if its the gpu that has gone out or the motherboard. Any one have any suggestions? If it were a desktop I would throw in one of my spare video cards. Mainly I don't want to order the video card and eat the $50 if its the motherboard.

• Why aren't there 8gb RAM modules yet?

  Why is RAM module development seemingly stuck at the same size for a while now (a couple of years)? I bought 2x2gb modules 2 years ago, and now it's all the same size, with prices even bigger. I want more memory, because I work a lot on my computer and I just need it. What is going on? Hardware/memory progress was being made constantly until these couple of years, and I'm a big computer user for over 15 years. Why isn't here 4gb/8gb modules yet? I would gladly replace my DDR2 motherboard for a DDRX one if it had at least 4gb DDRX modules for a reasonable price. Now we have a situation with very cheap usb drives reaching 64gb size, and a ram modules with pathetic 2gb size. Sounds like some sort of conspiracy.

• Learning Puppet Exercise - Installing httpd package and starting service

  I'm working my way through the Learning Puppet guide on manifests, and I am stuck on the exercise at the bottom of the page which asks you to install the httpd package and start the httpd service. So far my manifest looks like: package { 'httpd': ensure => present, } service { 'httpd': ensure => running, enable => true, } However, upon trying puppet apply on it, I get: From looking at other examples of similar manifests, I cant quite figure out what the issue is - I presume the attempt at installing the package httpd failed? Unfortunately the error message isn't particularly helpful here. Any assistance anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated. I'm running their VMWare Learning Puppet VM (PE 2.7.0) that was provided for this tutorial.

• Trying to reinstalling .net framework 4 on windows server 2003 SP2

  I had a problem with an application that was using .net framework 4. So I tried to fix the installation but it didn't solved. So I proceed to uninstall the framework and install it again. But then the problems started... the setup just wouldn't finish to download the framework. So i tried the full installer, and then it got stuck (freezes) at "installing client profile"... The server works well but the installation progress bar just stays at the same place (but the "wheel" keeps turning, like it was doing something, but stays like this for hours...) I tried the .net clean unistall software but the problem remains. I'm all out of ideas... I've searched the web but couldn't solve the problem with any solution I found... Any ideas on how to force the installation?

• vmconvert exchange 2007

  Has anyone tried to run vmconvert on a Windows 2008 64 bit server running Exchange 2007? Here is what I did. I stopped the Exchange processes and IIS and ran vmconvert. When I moved the new server to my vmware server 2.0 for windows and booted it. All seemed well except I could not send or receive email. All outbound was stuck in the queues. I was able to log in via OWA so that tells the network setup/NIC bindings were OK. Any ideas?

• Created a new zone in DNS manager - can't get site bindings to work in iis 7

  Firstly I would like to say that I am a noob when it comes to DNS, I am a web developer and I am trying to setup an intranet site for a charity. I have windows server 2008 and I installed both iis 7 and dns manager. In IIS I have this binding that works - Type: http:// IP Address: 192.168.1.9 Port: 80 Host name: My host name is empty and when I try to navigate to this website on the network, the http code is 200 and the page renders. Now if I try Host name of test.organization.intranet Internet explorer says "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" and the server response is aborted. In DNS manager I created a new forward lookup zone of organization.intranet I did this through the configure a dns server wizard and I created a host (A) with the same IP as the one being used in IIS. The full Host name is test.organization.intranet but it doesn't work. Maybe I am missing something obvious because it's not an area of IT that I know very well, but I am stuck for why I can't get it to work.

• Black screen with cursor after BIOS screen

  Here is a weird one, Got computer with Windows XP. It's getting stuck on a black screen with cursor blinking. What did I do: - Boot from installation CD (recovery option - command line): chkdsk C: /R copy D:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\ copy D:\i386\ntldr c:\ fixmbr fixboot Chkdsk showed 0 bad sectors and no problems during scan. dir on C:\ shows all directories and files in place (Windows, Program Files, Documents and Settings). BIOS shows correct boot drive. Still does not boot. Not sure what to think of. Please help. UPDATE: Just performed these steps: Backed up current disk C: (without MBR) using True Image to external hard drive Ran Windows XP clean installation with deleting all partitions and creating new one. Hard drive booted fine into Windows GUI installation!!! Then: I interrupted installation. Booted from True Image recovery CD and restored archive of disk C to an new partition. Same issue with black screen.

  Hi, I m a newbie to kernel programming. I am trying to boot the kernel 2.6.36 on my ECG machine.It was working perfectly on 2.6.33.2. • Mac OS X 10.6.8 - Can't remove SophosUpdate Packages/Folders on Desktop

  Every day a new "SophosUpdate" folder/package will appear on my desktop (see screenshot). When I highlight it my trash can turns into an eject button. When I drag them to the eject button nothing happens. Also nothing happens when I right click one of them and select "eject". The only thing that got rid of them once was starting up in safe mode but they keep coming back after that. Does anyone know what I can do? I'm stuck.

• Windows XP crashes by GT610 driver (nv4_disp)

  I have a PC which was working fine but one day screen went dark and nothing was shown. I thought the problem is graphic card, so I replaced it with new one. I bought a new graphic card (GeForce 610) and installed it on my system. I formatted my hard-drive and installed a fresh Windows XpSp3 and its drivers. Everything was fine but after installing graphic card's driver, I got an error saying windows got stuck in an infinite loop and it couldn't get out (in nv4_disp). I uninstalled it and downloaded its last version and installed it. Unfortunately, I got the same error and windows restated! Here's my system: Pascal Motherboard PT880PRO Intel CPU Windows XPSp3 I searched this issue on the internet and I found bunch of suggestions (from cleaning hardware to installing latest version of its driver) but nothing help! • How do I fix Windows 7 rotating wallpaper?

  On my PC with Windows 7 Professional x64, I have a folder of images that I use for my theme. Under Personalization (right click on desktop - Personalize) it is the only theme under 'My Themes'. Repeatedly, I have noticed the background has stopped rotating and is stuck on one image. When I go to Personalization, I notice a new theme has been created called 'Unsaved Theme' with one image from my folder and is the current theme. To fix this, I set the theme back to my folder and delete the single image theme. How can I prevent this from reoccurring as it has happened multiple times?

• Wifi in android-x86 with virtual box [closed]

  I am trying to run android-x86 in Virtualbox, I am using a laptop which connects to internet via WiFi. When the android starts in virtual box, it does not recognize the host wireless connection or in other words does not identify the wireless network at all. So I got a TP-Link wireless USB adapter connected to the laptop and configured wireless controller in USB for the VM. But sadly I found that the wireless is disabled as soon as the Android VM starts. I am stuck on how to let android running in Virtualbox identify my Wifi. Any guidelines or set up instructions would be greatly helpful.

• BIOS recognizes HD, but Ubuntu doesn't recognize it as partition

  Hello, I just stuck in a new 64 GB SSD (literally out of the box) into my Lenovo X61 laptop, replacing an old 5400 RPM 80 GB drive. When I boot the system, my motherboard successfully sees the SATA hard drive. Now I want to install Ubuntu on it. I stick it in the CD drive, bootup the system, and it gets to step 4 (choose partition), but sees no available partitions. Do I need to do something to the hard drive before installing Ubuntu? • Ctrl-Alt-F1 never gives prompt

  When I press Ctrl+Alt+F1 in my Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.4 (Santiago) I get a black screen with a blinking cursor, but I never get a login prompt. I can get back to my desktop with Ctrl+Alt+F7, and things work as normal. However, when I run sudo init 3 I get the same thing, but this time I am stuck at the screen and can't get back without a reboot. I'm not even sure where to start looking for the cause of this problem. Are the startup scripts that might be causing the problem or other system configurations that could lead to this? If this is not an known issue, what steps should I take to debug?

• Keyboard/Mouse not working when windows vista has reached login screen

  I currently have a problem with a system (vista home premium, 64bit). USB kbd/mouse will not work when windows has booted/loaded their drivers and Im stuck at the login screen with no working input devices. None of the available boot options after F8 will boot to working kbd/mouse. They work in the bios setup and they seem powered all the way until a few seconds before the login screen. Legacy USB devices is also enabled in the bios. They also work with the recovery dvd, but I am unable to start the device manager to check or uninstall the mouse/kbd drivers. Cant get devmgmt.msc nor devmgr.dll (with rundll32) to work. System repair does not detect the problem and there are no available restore points (it was disabled). Any ideas?

• 1024x768 gone (1024x600 availble) on HDMI, yesterday it worked?

  When I try to play a game called F-22 Total Air War 2.0 I get an error which says that the resolution 1024.768 is unsupported by the harware.. so I look into my desktop options and it looks like there is an option for 800x600, 1024x600, 1152x648 and higher wide screen resolutions but the 1024x768 is gone? I did play the game yezterday, I disconnected the HDMI, got upstairs, played a few more games, came back downstairs, plugged in the HDMI, launched the game and bam I got the error! I have a ATI Radeon Mobility HD5470 and the newest ATI Catalyst Center downloaded 3 days ago. How can I 'enable' the 1024x768 resolution again? Without it I can't play the game on my Big TV and I will be stuck with my little laptop screen.

• Transparent, unicode X terminal not tied to a Desktop Environment?

  I've been looking for this for a while now and I just haven't been able to find one. The last few that I used were: aterm - this one was fast and had good transparency support, but it doesn't support Unicode at all as far as I can tell. The dependency graph is also reasonable. gnome-terminal - was good, and had good transparency support plus unicode, but it pulls in about everything in gnome, and I don't use anything else in gnome. It was also somewhat slow (noticable lag in updating at times) and wouldn't use fonts that I wanted. Eterm - same thing as aterm, good dependencies and transparency but no unicode. Does anyone have suggestions, or will I be stuck with gnome-terminal's dependencies and slowness?

• Kubuntu guest on Windows 8.1 Hyper-V won't shut down completely

  I've got a Windows 8.1 Professional laptop with Hyper-V installed, and a Kubuntu 14.04 Desktop VM. When I shutdown the Kubuntu VM, most of the time it gets to the logo screen, and just sits there. It's not frozen, because I can see the glow around the logo brighten and fade. I have installed the four Hyper-V modules, and lsmod shows them all running fine before the shutdown. Also, once it's stuck on the logo screen, if I send a CTL-ALT-DEL to the VM, it restarts immediately. Does anyone have any idea where I'd begin troubleshooting this? UPDATE: I've disabled the startup and shutdown screens, and now can see this output when it's stopped. Hopefully this sheds more light on the problem.

• Mac OS X: What is using my 'active' memory?

  Hello fellas, I'm using a recent MacBook Pro with 8 GB of RAM and after a few hours of using it at work I notice the amount of 'active' memory growing and growing. Whenever I reboot my Mac, everything looks fine and it is hardly using any RAM. But after a few hours it looks like this: As you can see, in this case it's about 4.3 GB. Being a developer, I know that 'active memory' is the amount of memory that is currently used by running processes. So the first thing I did was quitting all applications and killing all processes that don't seem to belong to Mac OS X. After I did that, my active memory came down about 400 MB, but got stuck at what you see in the screenshot. There are no more processes or applications to quit. Now I'm wondering what is actually holding on to the memory? top and Activity Monitor don't report any processes with a high memory usage. Any ideas? Thanks!

• SSL Certificate in ISA Server 2004

  Hi All I have a ssl certificate for Exchange which has been installed on IIS for OWA but in order for this certificate to be presented to the user when they login, i.e. visit OWA, it has to be installed also on the ISA server. This is where I have become stuck. I have installed the certificate in the Personal section, but when I go to point the web listener to the ssl certificate it is never in the list. So, my question is, am I putting the certificate in the right place on the server? If so, where should it go? Cheers
