  I have written a Python module, and I have two versions: a pure Python implementation and a C extension. I've written the __init__.py file so that it tries to import the C extension, and if that fails, it imports the pure Python code (is that reasonable?). Now, I'd like to know what is the best way to distribute this module (e.g. write setup.py) so it can be easily used by people with or without the facility to build, or use, the C extension. My experience is limited but I see two possible cases: User does not have MS Visual Studio, or the GCC compiler suite, installed on their machine, to build the C extension User is running IronPython, Jython, or anything other than CPython. I only have used CPython. So I'm not sure how I could distribute this module so that it would work smoothly and be easy to install on those platforms, if they're unable to use the C extension.

• Is there something like bsdiff/Courgette for jar files?

  Google uses bsdiff and Courgette for patching binary files like the Chrome distribution. Do any similar tools exist for patching jar files? I am updating jar files remotely over a bandwidth-limited connection and would like to minimize the amount of data sent. I do have some control over the client machine to some extent (i.e. I can run scripts locally) and I am guaranteed that the target application will not be running at the time. I know that I can patch java applications by putting updated class files in the classpath, but I would prefer a cleaner method for doing updates. It would be good if I could start with the target jar file, apply a binary patch, and then wind up with an updated jar file that is identical (bitwise) to the new jar (from which the patch was created).

  Many people like to think of building software as constructing a building so we have terms like building blocks and architecture. However, lately I've been to a couple of talks and most people say this analogy is wrong especially around the idea of having a non-coding software architect in a project. In my experience, good software architects are those who also write code so they won't design things that only looks good on paper. I've worked with several Architecture Astronauts, who have either limited or outdated experience in programming. These architecture astronauts quite often missed out critical details in their design and cause more harm than good in a project. This makes me wonder what are the differences between constructing a software and a building? How come in the building industry they can have architects who probably never build a house in their life and purely handles design work but not in the software development field?

  I would like to select every column of a table, but want to have distinct values on a single attribute of my rows (City in the example). I don't want extra columns like counts or anything, just a limited number of results, and it seems like it is not possible to directly LIMIT results in a JPQL query.   Hi, I'm coming from (some limited) PHP experience, in which you can just declare functions in-line. I'm trying to the same thing with a JSP but not working. Basically I have a jsp that can generate a 3 different pages, and I wanted to put these each in a separate method.   Hi, I'm having a couple of problems with the JQuery tablesorter plugin. If you click on a column header, it should sort the data by this column, but there are a couple of problems: The rows are not properly sorted (1, 1, 2183, 236) The total row is included in the sort Regarding (2), I can't easily move the total row to a table footer, because the HTML is generated by the displaytag tag library over which I have limited control. Regarding (1), I don't understand why the sort doesn't work as I've used exactly the same JavaScript shown in the simplest example in the tablesorter tutorials.   Hi, I'm using the Boxy jQuery plugin to open dialog windows and populating it through ajax. http://onehackoranother.com/projects/jquery/boxy/ Here's my code so far: $("a.create").click(function (e) { url = $(e.target).attr('href'); Boxy.load(url, {title:'Test'}); }); This opens up a dialog alright. However, if I click the link again, another dialog will open. How can I make it such that the previously opened Boxy dialog will come into focus? I only want one instance of this dialog. I tried assigning a variable to var ele = Boxy.load(); but the variable ele returns undefined... Alas, I can't make out much from the limited Boxy documentation available. Enabling the option modal: true would prevent the user from clicking on the link multiple times, but I don't want the overlay to show. Thanks for any light you can shed on this. -Lyon

  Lets say I want to make a control to select any integer number by dragging on a "bar" with numbers: (156 is selected) Mousedown on "159" and dragging towards the left and then doing mouseup changes the control to this: (160 is selected) I've been experimenting for the past 3 hours but I'm inexperienced in Silverlight so I'm having problems getting started. My current guess is I should seperate this into 2 steps: Step 1: Build this control without swiping behavior. Just 2 buttons to go up a number or go down a number Step 2: Replace the buttons by handling mouse events. With my limited knowledge I think I would manage building a crappy control that does this, with very messy xaml and c# and lots of headaches when trying to apply styling and fancy state transitions, but I was hoping some xaml wizards could get me started with the basic approach? I'm saving directly to CAF format and using the following settings for the AudioStreamBasicDescription reference: audioFormat.mFormatID = kAudioFormatLinearPCM; I can see that there are other format ids I could use like: kAudioFormatLinearPCM kAudioFormatAppleLossless kAudioFormatAppleIMA4 kAudioFormatiLBC kAudioFormatULaw kAudioFormatALaw My knowledge of sound formats is very limited so my question is... which of these should I use to create the lowest compressed audio recording files? Plus, are there other settings I should apply to lower the quality and filesize even further?

  I just ran into a difficulty while learning Scala. I have an inheritance hierarchy that is essentially equivalent to this: class A { protected def myMethod() = println("myMethod() from A") } class B extends A { def invokeMyMethod(a: A) = a.myMethod() } But trying to compile this sample, I get the error "test.scala:7: error: method myMethod cannot be accessed in A". Coming from Java, my understanding is that protected members should be accessible at any point from a derived class, and nowhere have I seen anything that tells me that protected members in Scala are limited by instance. Does anyone have an explanation for this?

  We allow people to enter HTML code on our wiki-like site. But only a limited subset of HTML to not affect our styling and not allow malicious javascript code. Is there a good Java library on the server side to ensure that the code entered is valid? We tried creating an XML Schema document to validate against. The only issue there is the libraries we used to validate gave back cryptic error messages. What I want is for the validation library to actually fix the issue (if there was a style="" attribute added to an element, remove it). If fixing it is not easy, at least allow me to report a message to the user with the location of the error (an error code that I can present a nice message from is fine, probably even preferable).

  Hi, Basically I was trying to replace the part of string with its actual value which comes immediately after oracle operators. I can do this for limited operators list like {=,,<} but I wonder that is there any way out to gather all the operators rather than giving them by hands? For instance, I have this string; "a = xyz", then I will replace xyz with lets say 3. But as you know we have bunch of operator namely "like,in,exists etc". So my string can also be this: "a like xyz". So what do you suggest me? Thanks.

  I will be doing an occiasional import from XML into core data. I have around 50k entities that will be added. My question is how often should I call [managedObjectContext save:&error]. For every new entity added, or every x entities, or just at the end of the 50k import? I currently am calling it for each entity and tried only doing it for around every 10k and import speed went up drastically but after the first 30k it would crash with: *** Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSGenericException', reason: '*** Collection <NSCFSet: 0x13e760> was mutated while being enumerated.' Before I spend too much time trying to diagnose what is going on there I figured I'd check if its ok to not call save on every entity? Is the # of entities before calling save limited by the amount of memory those entities are using?

  I'm writing a ruby bootstrapping script for a school project, and part of this bootstrapping process is to start a couple of background processes (which are written and function properly). What I'd like to do is something along the lines of: `/path/to/daemon1 &` `/path/to/daemon2 &` `/path/to/daemon3 &` However, that blocks on the first call to execute daemon1. I've seen references to a Process.spawn method, but that seems to be a 1.9+ feature, and I'm limited to Ruby 1.8. I've also tried to execute these daemons from different threads, but I'd like my bootstrap script to be able to exit. So how can I start these background processes so that my bootstrap script doesn't block and can exit (but still have the daemons running in the background)? Thanks!

I am about to start a project and trying to figure out what solution is best to go with asp.net or java jsp pages I have personally worked alot with .net and am really happy with the framework and Visual studio as IDE I find it easy to work with and there is a massive community support behind .net, i can get alot done quickly I have not every written anything use java jsp, there will be a learning curve here , so my experience is limited here. however after seeing jira i am very impressed with its capabilities, it has changed alot since the old days ( java 1.2 ) that i used to work with, and the fact that it runs under linux is a huge plus, so i am trying to decide is the learning curve, worth the price ? so given the situation above what would you recommended? • reinventing the wheels: Node.JS/Event-driven programming v.s. Functional Programming?

  Now there's all the hype lately about Node.JS, an event driven framework using Javascript callbacks. To my limited understanding, its primary advantage seems to be that you don't have to wait step by step sequentially (for example, you can fetch the SQL results, while calling other functions too). So my question is: how is this different, or better than just functional languages, like CL, Haskell, Clojure etc? If not better, then why don't people just do functional languages then (instead of reinventing the wheel with Javascript)? Please note that I have none experience in either Node.JS nor functional programming. So some basic explanation can be helpful.

• Best practices for combining Lucene.NET and a relational database?

  I'm working on a project where I will have a LOT of data, and it will be searchable by several forms that are very efficiently expressed as SQL Queries, but it also needs to be searched via natural language processing. My plan is to build an index using Lucene for this form of search. My question is that if I do this, and perform a search, Lucene will then return the ID's of matching documents in the index, I then have to lookup these entities from the relational database. This could be done in two ways (That I can think of so far): N amount of queries (Horrible) Pass all the ID's to a stored procedure at once (Perhaps as a comma delimited parameter). This has the downside of being limited to the max parameter size, and the slow performance of a UDF to split the string into a temporary table. I'm almost tempted to mirror everything into lucenes index, so that I can periodicly generate the index from the backing store, but only need to access it for the frontend. Advice?

  I am having a bit of trouble with a select into insert across a dblink in oracle 10. I am using the following statement: INSERT INTO LOCAL.TABLE_1 ( COL1, COL2) SELECT COL1, COL2 FROM REMOTE.TABLE1@dblink s WHERE COL1 IN ( SELECT COL1 FROM WORKING_TABLE) When I run the statement the following is what gets run against the remote server on the DB Link: SELECT /*+ OPAQUE_TRANSFORM */ "COL1", "COL2" FROM "REMOTE"."TABLE1" "S" If I run the select only and do not do the insert into the following is run: SELECT /*+ */ "A1"."COL1" , "A1"."COL2" FROM "REMOTE"."TABLE1" "A1" WHERE "A1"."COL1" = ANY ( SELECT "A2"."COL1" FROM "LOCAL"."TABLE1"@! "A2") The issue is in the insert case the enitre table is being pulled across the dblink and then limited localy which takes a fair bit of time given the table size. Is there any reason adding the insert would change the behavior in this manner?

  I'm starting new project. The client interface is based on GWT (and GXT) I have no say it's predetermined. However I can pick and choose as far as server side so I can have some fun and hopefully learn something new in the process. Some requirements are : Exchange with server will be through use of JSON, most if not all of UI will be generated by GWT (JS) on the client, so the client/serve exchange will be limited to data exchange as much as possible No Hibernate (it's not really supported on the proprietary db I will be connecting to). In the past projects people would use JDBC or iBATIS Some sort of IoC (I'm thinking Guice just to stick with Google) Some sort of Security framework based on LDAP. In the past we would use Spring security (Acegi) but it wasn't ideal and we had to customize it a lot So basically should I stick with tried-and-true Spring/Acegi or try something based on Guice? And what that "something" would be and how mature is it?

  I'll be writing a small desktop app for a client that has WinXP machines and they won't be installing the .NET framework (at least not for me). So my choices are limited to either C++ or VB6, neither of which sound great. I remember reading back in the day that Mono came up with a static compiler, but recently the only thing I could find is Miguel de Icaza's entry on static compilation for a game engine for the purposes of running the app on the iPhone - not what I had in mind. • Handling multiple UISwitch controls in a table view without using tag property

  I have a table view controller with multiple UISwitch controls in them. I set the delegate to the table view controller with the same action for all switches. I need to be able to determine what switch was changed, so I create an array of strings that contains the name of each switch. The indexes in the array will be put in the tag property of each UISwitch. However, I'm ready using the tag property for something else, namely to find the right control in the cell in cellForRowAtIndexPath with viewWithTag! (There are several things I need to set within each cell.) So, am I thinking along the right lines here? I feel I'm rather limited in how I find out exactly which UISwitch changed its value, so I can do something useful with it.
