• MATLAB for kids?

  My seven-years old expresses large interest in computers (well, who doesn't? :). Since I'm mostly program in MATLAB, I'm thinking why not to teach him MATLAB. We did a small project with him (he had to solve as many simple arithmetic problems as possible in a limited time) and he get pretty excited. I coded, he watched and then tested. He also likes to do create interesting graphics and simple animations. So, what's next? I would appreciate any ideas for interesting projects, games, graphics? What math concepts he has to understand to program in MATLAB? Or may be you would say it's too early and we should start with something like Logo, Scratch or Alice?

• How to add a specific method to a particular scope in Visual Studion 2005

  Hi, In my visual studio project (C++), when i copy a method(meth1) of a particular scope say 'scope1' and paste it in the same code area, it is getting pasted in General Scope. i.e I want to add a method into a particular scope but when i try it is getting added in general scope. How can i solve this? For eg: There is an existing method: void add(int a, int b) { .... } This method is in File scope. i.e limited for that file. Now i want to add another method add2 in the same file scope. So I copied the existing add method and pasted it. void add2(int a, int b) { .... } But this method is getting added in the global scope and not in the file scope.

• iPhone link to map directions using string "current location" not lat and lng for saddr

  I know there are numerous questions about how to construct a sharedApplication link to the maps app specifying the start and end address with coordinates. I've got that working no problem. Has anyone found a way to link with a source address generically specified as "current location". I ask because the scenario I'm working on having Core Location or a UIMapView would only be necessary in order to determine the user location prior to handing off to the map app where the user locating would seem to just happen again. I've tried throwing UTF8'd "Current Location" and "[Current Location]" into the saddr parameter which amusingly starts from Current Montana. I've also tried simply excluding the saddr param. I know this is often tread territory but this particular situation wasn't covered by anything I found searching here or on mapki. Before I add the core location code I just wanted to make sure there wasn't a more limited way to tackle this. Thanks

I saw that we can use distint ways to calculcate the triangles. I will make the size of the triangles equal till 1kz and after that obtained with log function. What should we do now? With the frequency spectrum and the triangles defined.. - We should filter the frequency (frequencies limited to the triangles, if goes higher only counts till the triangle limit) and calculate the value of each triangle (and after that continue the algorithm). But when does the mel conversation happens? m = 2595 log (f/700 + 1) When do we pass from frequency to mel.. Can someone guide me in the right direction plz :d

• Parsing JPEG file format: Format of entropy-coded segment (ECS) segments?

  I'm having difficulty understanding the ITU-T T.81 spec for the JPEG file format. Hopefully someone else here has tried to parse JPEG files and/or knows about the details of this file format. The spec indiates that the ECS0 segment starts after the SOS segment but I can't find where in the spec it actually talks about the format of the ECS0 segment or how do detect its start. Simple JPEG implementations online are of limited help because they assume many things about the JPEGs they parse. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

• Help with a pseudo-class, first-child

  I am working on a CMS platform with limited access to the template files and want to try and control some of the layout with pseudo class but no luck yet. Can anyone see what is wrong with this structure and why my pseudo class is being ignored? <div id="main"> <div class="someRandomDiv"></div> <div class="block"> stuff </div> <div class="block"> more stuff </div> </div> and i am trying something like this #main .block {border: 1px solid blue} #main .block:first-child {border: 1px solid red} so with this example I would think the stuff block would have a red border and more stuff would have a blue but it is all just blue. • How to use IObservable/IObserver with ConcurrentQueue or ConcurrentStack

  I realized that when I am trying to process items in a concurrent queue using multiple threads while multiple threads can be putting items into it, the ideal solution would be to use the Reactive Extensions with the Concurrent data structures. My original question is at: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2997797/while-using-concurrentqueue-trying-to-dequeue-while-looping-through-in-parallel/ So I am curious if there is any way to have a LINQ (or PLINQ) query that will continuously be dequeueing as items are put into it. I am trying to get this to work in a way where I can have n number of producers pushing into the queue and a limited number of threads to process, so I don't overload the database. If I could use Rx framework then I expect that I could just start it, and if 100 items are placed in within 100ms, then the 20 threads that are part of the PLINQ query would just process through the queue. Though the present context is Disease Modelling, I'm not sure if there's such a thing as 'general' modelling and simulation... with concepts / techniques / algorithms that could be used in just about any domain (and not just limited to biology, finance, trade, economic, weather, etc.) Would you have any recommendations that are easy to read by a semi-Math-literate programmer? • jQuery Cycle Plugin: How to preload first images with a loading background gif then fade in Cycle Sl

  Hello all, I'm struggling with this, maybe some of you can help... I have a home page slideshow with large images at www.theoribeiro.com using jQuery Cycle plugin Images are large and sometimes with slow connections (but even in fast ones) the behavior of the slideshow start is pretty ugly, showing the image all of a sudden or half-loaded. I want to make sure that at least the 2 or 3 first images are loaded before the slideshow starts and meanwhile I want to run a loading animated gif, then I want to fade in the first image. I searched a lot on the internet and on the forums and tried loads of stuff with my limited knowledge of javascript and jQuery but could't come up with a solution. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

• How to handle concurrent web requests

  I am having a simple webservice running in my local system, hosted in IIS 6.0. This webservice is accessible from any other system (within LAN and Internet) and everything works fine as long as the number of systems accessing my webservice is very much limited. Whereas, if more number of users (say 500) are concurrently trying to access my webservice, an exception is thrown saying 'Server is busy'. When i browsed in net, i found that IIS can handle only 100-150 web requests concurrently. What should i do to make my webservice accessible from more than 500 users, concurrently? Thanks in advance. • emacs23 pops up debugger way too frequently

  Since I've upgraded to Ubuntu lucid and emacs23, Emacs pops up the debugger in situations, where emacs22 does not. For example, when hitting C-c C-c in org-mode, emacs22 simply states can do nothing useful at this location, whereas in emacs23 the debugger shows up. Debugger entered--Lisp error: (error "C-c C-c can do nothing useful at this location") signal(error ("C-c C-c can do nothing useful at this location")) error("C-c C-c can do nothing useful at this location") org-ctrl-c-ctrl-c(nil) call-interactively(org-ctrl-c-ctrl-c nil nil) That only illustrates the pattern -- the behavior is not limited to org-mode. Occurring every 3 minutes, it really annoys me. How can I prevent it? I've already tried to stop this using debug-on-error and stack-trace-on-error: it didn't work.

  We're debating whether our future Windows UI development should be WinForms or WPF. How have some of you made this decision? Most of our applications are LOB applications, and I'm not sure I see a clear and overwhelming benefit to WPF for these types of applications. However, my knowledge of WPF is limited. I'm also a little concerned that WPF will be in vogue for another couple years and then Microsoft will get tired of it and push something else on us. • Operating system for visualization app in 6 monitors

  Hi. I have to plan the development for an application with these major requirements: Show different graphical data and animations in 6 monitors, in fullscreen mode. The hardware to be used is a PC with 3 NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GX2 cards. I have some expertise working with OpenGL, but never with more than one monitor. I have the (some limited) freedom to choose an operating system for the application. My options are: Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Ubuntu 8.04/10.04. I would like to know, if you have some expertise or knowledge in the multi-monitor application development field, what is the recommended operating system for this kind of application? And, do I need any software other than the operating system and the NVIDIA drivers to be able to use the 6 monitors in fullscreen, showing different things in each one of them? • ASP.NET MVC Alter Markup before Output

  Hi, Excuse my limited knoweldge here. In the past I have used Steve Sanderson's method to HTML encode by default at runtime: http://blog.stevensanderson.com/2007/12/19/aspnet-mvc-prevent-xss-with-automatic-html-encoding/ I have a need to alter img src and a href attributes before they are spat out in the user's browser. There is a solution using JavaScript but this is not ideal for several reasons. Intercepting the compiler is not an option because of unnecessarily using Response.Write for trivial HTML. Is there something I can do with HTTP modules or the view engine? Any thoughts? Cheers.

• JQuery Autocomplete only suggesting first row

  I'm doing research using JQuery's Autocomplete plugin and Google Maps' API. What I have so far is located here. I'm using Asp.net MVC to generate the list of potential address matches (limited to US addresses only) and presenting them as a pipe-delimeted list to Autocomplete, which is supposed to be .spliting them up and suggesting them to the user. The problem I'm having (besides a stubborn IE-only javascript error, which I'll break into another question), is that only the first result is suggested. This page clearly shows two results, yet typing "3118" into the textbox produces only the Galax Dr result. How can I get Automplete to produce both results?

You can define module-level doctests and/or a doctest for individual models. It's common practice to put application-level doctests in the module docstring and model-level doctests in the model docstrings. A file called tests.py in the application directory -- i.e., the directory that holds models.py. This file is a hook for any and all doctests you want to write that aren't necessarily related to models. Out of curiosity I'd like to know why Django's testrunner is limited to the doctests in models.py, but more practically I'd like to know how one could expand the testrunner's doctests to include (for example) views.py and other modules when running manage.py test. • Ooutsourcing design/programming (taxes!)

  Hello, I have a full time job, but I also have some ideas in mind -- and I want to outsource some code development and design to Russia. I have friends there who help me to do that -- they'll do the development, provide me invoice (which is just description of our terms, because we decided on flat rate monthly fee), and I need to wire them money. So, I do not have business entity. If I'll pay them, am I am required to pay taxes? Or do I deduct my business expenses (say $30K/year) from my earnings (say $50K/year), and pay taxes only on what's left ($20K to be precise)? Any rules on that? Am I limited with something here? • Add Web Reference prompts for credentials with "Discovery Credential" dialog but won't accept valid

  I'm attempting to add a web reference to my ASP.Net 3.0 project. This is a reference to the SQL Server Reporting Services web service. I have verified the service is up and running, but when I try to add the web reference in my project, I am prompted for my credentials, which I enter, and then prompted again and again and again. I have to hit cancel to stop the vicious cycle. When I do that the service definition comes up in the window, but the "Add Reference" button is disabled so I can't add the reference to my project. I have limited knowledge of SQL Reporting Services configurations. If anyone knows how to resolve this problem I'd really appreicate it.

• Session persistence problem

  Hello I'm having a problem with getting sessions to persist, and having no luck searching, I need to ask. I can access the contents of my session as expected when first set, but as soon as the page refreshes I lose everything and I don't see why. session_start() is set and I'm not unseting or destroying anything. I looked at PHP Info under sessions and everything looks ok (but my understanding of sessions is limited). I'm running MAMP on OS 10.5, and the last time I used sessions they worked.

  Hey guys ! i'm fairly new at web development scene and i was wondering if you guys can help me break up the pros and cons of using python django vs asp.net mvc besides the maturity level of its framework. I have intermediate experience with JAVA. As of right now, i'm leaning towards python but i just wanted to make sure i am making the right choice. I find myself limited with books available on asp.net web developments. I am aware that there is the storefront example on the official asp.net site. However, that tutorial was a little hard for me to follow. I've done a research around and was hoping python could be my next available choice. There are more tutorials available online for python anyways. What do you guys think??
