• Hobbyist transitioning to earn money on paid work?

  I got into hobbyist Python programming some years ago on a whim, having never programmed before other than BASIC way back when, and little by little have cobbled together a, in my opinion, nice little desktop application that I might try to get out there in some fashion someday. It's roughly 15,000 logical lines of code, and includes use of Python, wxPython, SQLite, and a number of other libraries, works on Win and Linux (maybe Mac, untested) and I've gotten some good feedback about the application's virtues from non-programmer friends. I've also done a small application for data collection for animal behavior experiments, and an ad hoc tool to help generate a web page...and I've authored some tutorials. I consider my Python skills to be appreciably limited, my SQL skills to be very limited, but I'm not totally out to sea, either (e.g. I did FizzBuzz in a few minutes, did a "Monty Hall Dilemma" simulator in some minutes, etc.). I also put a strong premium on quality user experience; that is, the look and feel matters much to me and the software looks quite good, I feel. I know no other programming languages yet. I also know the basics of HTML/CSS (not considering them programming languages) and have created an artist's web page (that was described by a friend as "incredibly slick"...it's really not, though), and have a scientific background. I'm curious: Aside from directly selling my software, what's roughly possible--if anything--in terms of earning either side money on gigs, or actually getting hired at some level in the software industry, for someone with this general skill set?

• Why not sync folders outside home with Ubuntu One?

  It took me a while to find out that with Ubuntu One I can sync only folders in my home folder. On all other folders the Ubuntu One option is available in preferences, but the actual actions are greyed out. The Ubuntu One FAQ is quite clear on that: No, currently you can only select to synchronize folders inside your home directory. But I actually wonder why and if this is going to change and if there is a trick around it (an other one than setting my home to /) ? I personally don't have any important data in my home folder other than the program configs. All documents, pictures, music are on a folder called /data that is actually on a different partition. That makes it much easier when one wants to reinstall Ubuntu.

• Really weird situation with Swap that refuses to work

  So I decide to move my Swap partition to another HDD to make hibernation more fast, I create a partition with a liveUSB, do swapon, and then hibernate just disappears I go into the terminal, reactivate hibernate (so the button shows) for some reason the swap wasn't "on" so I do swapon again. Still not working. I go back to the terminal and edit the file with the UUID of the new swap partition. The partition shows as swap on gparted, it's on, the file has the right UUID, even the task manager shows a swap area of 10GB, and there is a hibernate button on the shutdown window. But it-wont-hibernate! What's going on?

• Application Logging needs work

  Application Logging Application logging is the act of logging events that occur within an application much like how a court report documents what happens in court case. Application logs can be useful for several reasons, but the most common use for logs is to recreate steps to find the root cause of applications errors. Other uses can include the detection of Fraud, verification of user activity, or provide audits on user/data interactions. “Logs can contain different kinds of data. The selection of the data used is normally affected by the motivation leading to the logging. “ (OWASP, 2009) OWASP also stats that logging include applicable debugging information like the event date time, responsible process, and a description of the event. “There are many reasons why a logging system is a necessary part of delivering a distributed application. One of the most important is the ability to track exactly how many users are using the application during different time periods.” (Hatton, 2000) Hatton also states that application logging helps system designers determine whether parts of an application aren't being used as designed. He implies that low usage can be used to identify if users like or do not like aspects of a system based on user usage of the application. This enables application designers to extract why users don't like aspects of an application so that changes can be made to increase its usefulness and effectiveness. “Logging memory usage can also assist you in tuning up the internals of your application. If you're experiencing a randomly occurring problem, being able to match activities performed with the memory status at the time may enable you to discover the cause of the problem. It also gives you a good indication of the health of the distributed server machine at the time any activity is performed. “ (Hatton, 2000) Commonly Logged Application Events (Defined by OWASP) Access of Data Creation of Data Modification of Data in any form Administrative Functions  Configuration Changes Debugging Information(Application Events)  Authorization Attempts  Data Deletion Network Communication  Authentication Events  Errors/Exceptions Application Error Logging The functionality associated with application error logging is actually the combination of proper error handling and applications logging.  If we look back at Figure 4 and Figure 5, these code examples allow developers to handle various types of errors that occur within the life cycle of an application’s execution. Application logging can be applied within the Catch section of the TryCatch statement allowing for the errors to be logged when they occur. By placing the logging within the Catch section specific error details can be accessed that help identify the source of the error, the path to the error, what caused the error and definition of the error that occurred. This can then be logged and reviewed at a later date in order recreate the error that was received based data found in the application log. By allowing applications to log errors developers IT staff can use them to recreate errors that are encountered by end-users or other dependent systems.

I setup a WRT54G as a WiFi client with a vpn back to my house and NAT. Setup a second one as a basic wireless access point with password and plugged it into the first. Onsite we setup the devices and connected to the wireless with one paid account(tied to the MAC address). Everyone connected to the other device for wireless access and it was all tunnelled through my home network with encryption.   I attended a Microsoft Office and SharePoint 2010 HOL 1 day workshop last week and wanted to setup a VM to try the new features in my own laptop. The presenter in the workshop implicitly mentioned a tool called VirtualBox (because it's not a MS product?) but I have no clue what it is at that moment. Until today, I saw a very useful blog and thanks to Guy and Rolly.   If I expose my service, for instance teamspeak server, on what address it will be running? On my server address? For example: my server has an address of 158.37.15.167. If I deploy teamspeak from my local network (10.0.0.0) connected to the server, how will it be seen in the 158.37.15.167 network? • How to make backlight work on Acer 5732z?

  I want to run 12.04 on my Acer Aspire 5732z. I know from research that these computers have issues with the backlight on Ubuntu. So I tried a couple of solutions: The sudo lightdm restart method. I get no change at all. The sudo setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=30 method. This so far has been the most effective. I first tried it in the F1 console, right away I get the screen back, problem is going back to the desktop it goes back to being black. So I tried it from a terminal window and it works as well but as soon as I unplug my external monitor the screen turns black again and doesn't come back. If I plug the monitor back in the screen stays black and the only thing I see is the mouse pointer. From here I go back into console (which I am able to see) and reboot from there. The sudo sed -i 's/GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""/GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="acpi_osi=Linux"/g /etc/default/grub method. This one I got no instant change and after reboot still no change. I'm open to pretty much any suggestions you may have.

• Ubuntu 3D does not work on Dell system with a AMD Radeon HD 6470M

  I am running 64 bit Ubuntu on Dell with 1GB graphic card. I login with "Ubuntu" hoping to see Unity 3d but it doesn't. Unity 2D runs instead. when I type in echo "$DESKTOP_SESSION" it confirms the Unity-2D. I've checked the System info that shows like : The graphics row shows itself as empty. SO I've presumed that the graphic drivers aren't detected and hence I went to Unity- Additional Drivers and installed the fglrx driver that the UI has suggested. Even after installing so, the graphics part in System info details shows nothing and still Unity 2D runs in spite of all the effort. Please help! How can I get my Unity 3D back? • Can't get Unity 3D to work in 11.10

  I recently upgraded to 11.10 on my Lenovo ThinkPad T520, and I'm not able to load Unity 3D (I'm not selecting 2D at login menu either). me@mycomp:~$ echo $DESKTOP_SESSION ubuntu-2d I ran the unity support test below as well. me@mycomp:~$ /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0". Error: unable to create the OpenGL context And it looks like I only have one graphics card: me@mycomp:~$ lspci | grep VGA 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09) Also, Ubuntu lists nothing under the "Additional Drivers" window. • Cakephp, Route old google search results to new home page

  Hi there, I have created a new website for a company and I would like all the previous search engine results to be redirected. Since there were quite a few pages and most of them where using an id I would like to use something generic instead of re-routing all the old pages. My first thought was to do that: Router::connect('/*', array('controller' => 'pages', 'action' => 'display', 'home')); And put that at the very end of the routes.php file [since it is prioritized] so that all requests not validating with previous route actions would return true with this one and redirect to homepage. However this does not work. • PCI hotplug doesn't seem to work

  In virsh I detach a PCI bus from host and attach it to a VM. I don't see any errors in these steps. But I don't see the PCI device listed in the VM. virsh # nodedev-dettach pci_0000_01_00_0 Device pci_0000_01_00_0 dettached virsh # attach-device VM1 pci_add.xml Device attached successfully $ cat pci_add.xml <hostdev mode='subsystem' type='pci' managed='yes'> <source> <address domain='0x000' bus='0x01' slot='0x00' function='0x0'/> </source> </hostdev> Is PCI hot plug not supported? I am using Ubuntu 12.04.3(kernel 3.8.0-34). I can add the same PCI device through virsh edit VM1 and start the VM1. This way I am able to see the device.

• YELP does not work right

  When I click on DashHome then click on the questionmark, It brings up the help system. However when I enter a command to search on it tells me this does not exist. From what I understand the engine is YELP and is suppose to search everything including the man pages. However, I can't get it to find anything. I tried to install the yelp package but it tells me the one that is installed is the latest version. Am I doing something wrong? Everything I read says hitting the F1 key is suppose to bring up yelp but Thanks in advance. Dave

• Problems to boot, Ubuntu entry does not work anymore

  A few months I decided to install Ubuntu 12.04 on my PC alongside with my Windows 7 partition. In order to do that and avoid any mistake, I followed these steps: http://www.linuxbsdos.com/2012/05/17/how-to-dual-boot-ubuntu-12-04-and-windows-7/2/ Everything was going well until I decided to update to the 12.10 realese. I don't know what happened, but after I updated my Ubuntu, it stoped working, it didn't even launched, when I turned on my pc and choose to run "Ubuntu 12.04" on the Grub Screen, a weird messaged appeared. Well, so I decided to install the Ubuntu 12.10 and forget about the 12.04 partition, no problem. I erased the partitions used for the Ubuntu 12.04 with EaseUS partition Manager. However, when I start my PC, there is still the option of "Ubuntu 12.04" to chose, is that bad? And what about now, can I use the Windows Installer of Ubuntu ( http://www.ubuntu.com/download/help/install-ubuntu-with-windows ) to install the Ubuntu 12.10 ? What should I do to have Ubuntu 12.10 and Windows 7 in dual boot again? Thanks; Thales.

• How exactly does app ranking work?

  So I've been in the app industry for around half a year and I still don't know how exactly ranking higher for your app will help increase downloads. That sounds like a question with an obvious answer but this is what's going through my mind so hear me out: Unless your app is ranked within the top 100, no one can see it in the featured categories. So even if my app jumped from 400th to 300th place, would there really even be a difference in downloads? And I'm saying 400th to 300th in ranking in my specific category. Indie developers like me don't even come close to ranking for the overall category. So far, the only usefulness of trying to get a higher rank is to get featured or something like that, but big companies have tons of money to throw on marketing...so the chances of any indie developer getting featured is rare. The only thing that I can see ranking being good for is to rank for your keywords so that when someone searches for that word, your app will hopefully appear in the top 10-25 results. Can anyone confirm my thoughts or add anything else that I might have missed out on? How exactly do users find your app if you're not in the top 100 app in your category?

  When i try to run something with wine, nothing happens! i have many problems with ubuntu so i have tried to get windows 8 back on the computer, but because ubuntu cant run exe files i cant open the installer. evenmore my computer cant boot from a CD/DVD anymore after i installed ubuntu, i turns op with a black screen with a blinking marker at the upper left corner of the screen and after 10 minutes it says something like " cant boot from the selected mediadevice - select another" so how to get windows back?
