• How to rebuild a Li Ion laptop battery?

  I have an aging Gateway NX560XL laptop. The battery is toast and a new one, even aftermarket, starts at $130. So, to experiment, I began tearing apart the old battery to see what can be done. I found it used 8 standard size 18650 Li Ion cells arranged two cells parallel then in series (like: ====). Some online shopping revealed ~$7-13/ea replacements depending on mAh output. My plan is to load test to determine the bad cells and replace only those, as I read that typically only 1 or 2 may be bad. I'm proficient with soldering, however these cells are attached with welded tabs. Some of them broke during disassembly and I'm not sure how to reattach them. What I found online are cells like these that have solder tabs pre-welded to the ends so I can solder wires onto. Is there any guide available that provides the instructions and parts to do this kind of rebuild?

• Automatically wake up notebooks not on the ethernet

  I am looking for an automated backup system and I like bacula. I have 3 Notebooks and a Desktop computer that need regular backup. Now I don't want to let them run all night just to do the backuping, so I was thinking I could use wake-on-lan to have bacula wake up the machines, then do the backups, and shut them down afterswards. While this may work with devices on the ethernet, it won't work with the Notebooks on the wifi. So is it possible to have the Notebooks schedules to automatically wake up from suspend or shutdown ? Or is it possible to interject a shutdown command if it is after a certain hour and call the bacula director to start the backup now? I'm new to controlling the linux system using scripts, so any hints on how and where to start are greatly appreciated. Thanks alot for your help, input and ideas.

• Is there a visual web application builder or rapid webapp prototyping framework?

  Question: Is there such a thing as a self-hosted framework or CMS especially tailored towards the creation of interactive web applications without -- or with an absolute minimum of -- programming? (Substantially less programming than say a simple Rails app or a plugin for Wordpress, Joomla etc would require.) As for desired features I'd settle for whatever is available, but some ideas could be: A User authentication and Permissions system. A GUI-driven input form builder. A GUI-driven template / visual site design builder. A simple scripting language (think AppleScript-like simplicity) A highly modular architecture, with high-level business objects (users, forms data, etc) exposed for easy re-use. If something like the above doesn't exist, then what comes near this? Need: This is for self-hosted rapid prototyping of web applications, and limited user testing of webapp user interface designs in a closed user test. Notes: I know about Ruby on Rails (Rails), Django, Pyramid etc. I'm looking for something much faster to work in, for making prototypes. I know about CMS's in general but find that most of them are tailored towards displaying information to the end users. If there is an exceptionally easy-to-master CMS with easy scripting (lets say much more so than for example Wordpress) then I'd be interested.

• How do I delete a route in OS X 10.5

  I somehow configured my Mac to route all requests for a particular IP Name (sample.com) to the loopback address (127.0.0.1). Now I'm trying to remove this, but can't determine where to do it. There is no entry for it under /etc/hosts. The routing table shows that it is mapping the IP Name to the IP address of the Mac. The report is generated in the background by connecting to the BI Publisher server. The report output is stored in the Siebel File System and accessed from the My BI Publisher Reports view. • Would Using a PHP Framework Be Beneficial in My Context?

  I've just started work at a small start-up company who mainly uses PHP to develop their front-end apps. I had no prior PHP experience before joining, and this has led to my apps becoming large pieces of spaghetti code. I essentially started by adding code to implement an initial feature, and then continued to hack in more code to implement further features – without much thought for the overall design. The apps themselves output XML to render on small mobile devices. I recently started looking into frameworks that I could use. I reckon an advantage would be that they seem to force developers to modularise their programs using good-practice design patterns. This seems great for someone in my position. The extra functions they provide, for example: interfacing with databases in such a way as to make SQL injection impossible, would be very useful too. The downside I can see is that there will be a lot of overhead for me in terms of the time taken to learn the framework itself (while still getting to grips with PHP itself). I'm also worried that it will be overkill for the scale of the apps we develop. They tend to be programs that interface with a fairly simple back-end DB, and will generate about 5 different XML screens. Probably around 1 or 2 thousand lines of code. The time it takes just to configure the frameworks may not be worth it. The final problem I can see is that developers in the company – who have to go over my code, and who do not know the PHP framework I may use – will have a much harder time understanding it. Given those pros and cons, I'm still not sure on what the best course of action will be; so any advice will be greatly appreciated.

• OS X Lion - Installing Oracle 10g Standard Edition

  Im trying to install oracle 10g on to OS X Lion, I have previous achieved this on snow leopard with the following http://blog.rayapps.com/2009/09/14/how-to-install-oracle-database-10g-on-mac-os-x-snow-leopard/ The issue im having is that the ulimit settings in the oracle/.bash_profile cannot be modified. I have the following in the bash_profile: export DISPLAY=:0.0 export ORACLE_BASE=$HOME umask 022 # must match `sysctl kern.maxprocperuid` ulimit -Hu 512 ulimit -Su 512 # must match `sysctl kern.maxfilesperproc` ulimit -Hn 10240 ulimit -Sn 10240 Upon applying the bash_profile settings . ~/.bash_profile i get the following error: -bash: ulimit: max user processes: cannot be modify limit: Invalid argument This then results in $ sqlplus / as sysdba not functioning correctly with a Segmentation fault: 11 The output of $ ulimit -a core file size (blocks, -c) 0 data seg size (kbytes, -d) unlimited file size (blocks, -f) unlimited max locked memory (kbytes, -l) unlimited max memory size (kbytes, -m) unlimited open files (-n) 10240 pipe size (512 bytes, -p) 1 stack size (kbytes, -s) 8192 cpu time (seconds, -t) unlimited max user processes (-u) 512 virtual memory (kbytes, -v) unlimited If any one knows how I can apply these ulimit settings to the oracle user I have created to allow me to install sqlplus and therefore create a db, that would be great.

  I'm trying to convert a bunch of movies into h.264 mp4's using FFMPEG. These movies are sourced from various portable camcorders such as the Flip Mino HD and the Kodak ZI8. One issue I'm having with video from the ZI8 is it seems to be causing FFMPEG to segfault. • Permission problem - users can't access main index.php anymore

  From /var/www, I executed "chmod -R 774 ." and now none of my .php scripts are accessible. From my browser, when I type in mydomain.com or mydomain.com/test2.php or mydomain.com/test.php, I get the 403 Forbidden error msg. So, I changed the permissions of 3 of the .php scripts to 775, but this didn't help either.   I have Ubuntu Linux 12.04 version the latest right now.I want to mount an external HDD NTFS 1TB.I have followed many guides but still no success.The error I'm getting is this: Failed to read last sector (1953523119): Invalid argument HINTS: Either the volume is a RAID/LDM but it wasn't setup yet, or it was not setup correctly (e.g. by not using mdadm --build ...), or a wrong device is tried to be mounted, or the partition table is corrupt (partition is smaller than NTFS), or the NTFS boot sector is corrupt (NTFS size is not valid). Failed to mount '/dev/sdb1': Invalid argument The device '/dev/sdb1' doesn't seem to have a valid NTFS. Maybe the wrong device is used? Or the whole disk instead of a partition (e.g. /dev/sda, not /dev/sda1)? Or the other way around? • Finding throuput of CPU and Hardrive on Solaris

  How do i find the throughput of a CPU and the Hardisk on an open solaris machine. Using MPstat or iostat. I'm having a hard time identifying the throughput if it is given at all in the commands output. Eg. in mpstat there is very little explanation as to what the columns mean http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/816-5166/mpstat-1m?l=en&a=view&q=syscl+mpstat I've been using the syscl column divided by time interval to find the throughput but to be honest i have no idea what a system call truelly is. • DB API for shell scripting (any shell)

  I am faced with some legacy shell scripts that run batch data processing jobs in Oracle using SQL+. For the most part, the data tier does not have to communicate back to the script with retrieved data to be passed for shell-level processing but in a few cases it does. The problem is, SQL+ is really meant to be an end user app and not an API that can communicate with other clients programmaticaly. That is why people have invented APIs such as DBD::DBI for Perl, JDBC for Java, ODBC etc. The way it is done is they invoke SQL+ and then parse the output, which is clearly designed for human eye consumption, using tools like sed and awk. The whole thing is at best a hack and very prone to bugs. Since this client is rather conservative with their technology, they don't want to scale their scripts up to Perl or Python where there are data access APIs. So I am wondering whether there are similar APIs for shell, e.g. K or bash. What I would like is if an API would return data in a 2-dimensional array or strings (for the lack of type setting) so that I can just read DB data like that. The way they do it now is akin to parsing regular web page HTML to get a single stock quote rather than cleanly calling a web service and be done with it. Anybody know of a product I can use? Thanks

  Hi I have been trying to send commands to a running gnu screen session (4.00.03) in opensolaris, but cannot get it to run any commands through any combination of screen -X Ok, I start a screen session with screen -S test, and then tried to with screen -r -X "date"to just show me the date, when I would reconnect to it. But neither an error message nor output in the screen happened. I tried with so many combinations, that I can't even remember. Any hints on how to accomplish it? The reason why I am doing this is, because I have a program, which does not come as a daemon, and I wish to start it in a screen session, so I can later on see what is going on.

• Run batch on files in a relative folder

  I have a windows batch script that runs a SOX command on various files, but I don't know how to get the batch to run on files in a relative path to that of the SOX executable. Currently all the files are in the root and it outputs to /combined. The Batch Script: cd %~dp0 mkdir combined FOR %%A IN (*.mp3) DO sox static.mp3 %%A "combined/%%~nxA" pause I want the script to run the sox command on files in the directory "audiotracks" and output it to the directory "combined". To give you an idea, this would be the desired folder structure: /root sox.exe batch.bat static.mp3 /audiotracks audio1.mp3 audio2.mp3 audio3.mp3 audio4.mp3 /combined audio1out.mp3 audio2out.mp3 audio3out.mp3 audio4out.mp3 Is this possible, or is there a better method of doing this? • What should we be aware of when moving windows servers to another domain

  Hi everyone, We have a bunch of (virtual vmware) windows servers (2003 and 2008) that our hosting provider wants to move to a new domain. They also want to rename the servers. The hosting provider is in charge of maintaining the servers, while we are in charge of making sure that all our business applications are working. Our business applications include custom developed .net applications using such things as SQLServer 2008, TFS 2010, asp.net, some legacy COM+ apps, etc. To be honest I don't feel too convinced that this migration will be as painless as the hosting provider wants to make it sound. I would greatly appreciate any input on what we should be aware of when discussing the practicalities involved in the migration with the hosting provider. Thanks in advance. Klaus

• Does DirectX implement Triple Buffering?

  As AnandTech put it best in this 2009 article: In render ahead, frames cannot be dropped. This means that when the queue is full, what is displayed can have a lot more lag. Microsoft doesn't implement triple buffering in DirectX, they implement render ahead (from 0 to 8 frames with 3 being the default). The major difference in the technique we've described here is the ability to drop frames when they are outdated. Render ahead forces older frames to be displayed. Queues can help smoothness and stuttering as a few really quick frames followed by a slow frame end up being evened out and spread over more frames. But the price you pay is in lag (the more frames in the queue, the longer it takes to empty the queue and the older the frames are that are displayed). As I understand it, DirectX "Swap Chain" is merely a render ahead queue, i.e. buffers cannot be dropped; the longer the chain, the greater the input latency. At the same time, I find it hard to believe that the most widely used graphics API would not implement such fundamental functionality correctly. Is there a way to get proper triple buffered vertical synchronisation in DirectX?

• Can not mount /dev/loop0 (/cdrom/casper/filesystem.squashfs)

  I downloaded 12.04.1 and md5 sum checked them and everything is good. Made a live usb and booted up... Just gets to where its about to start with the purple ubuntu loading screen then it goes back to text and gives this message: BusyBox v1.18.5 (Ubuntu 1:1.18.5-1ubuntu4) built-in shell (ash) Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands. (initramfs) mount: mounting /dev/loop0 on ///filesystem.squashfs failed: Input/output error Can not mount /dev/loop0 (/cdrom/casper/filesystem.squashfs) on //filesystem.squashfs This happens in the live option, or persistent even the file checking one doesn't work Also I've tried a few different F6 options to no avail. I used 'LiLi USB creator' and 'unetbootin' and also 'Universal USB Installer,' all with the same results. I've also tried using a VM and it showed the same. That is when I figured I had a corrupt .iso so I downloaded it again checked the MD5: e235b63c02644e219b7bf3668f479c9e. Only I'm having the same problem. I'm just about ready to give up on 12.04.1 and just go back to 10.04 utill the next LTS comes out. I've got a dell mini 10 btw. Thanks for your time.

• ecryptfs - decrypt and mount at boot with USB key

  I have a system running Ubuntu Server as a testbed for some services that I want to get familiar with. I decided to let the installation procedure set up encryption. I knew all along that I would have to decrypt it with the passphrase in order to get the system booted, but I assumed it wouldn't matter since it will only boot once or twice a month. However, my brother has informed me that he is a victim of power outages at the residence where this server is located. This means we have to explain to his girlfriend how to turn on the computer, attach a keyboard, connect a monitor (she just can't understand that she can type to the computer without a display, so whatever) and input the passphrase for us, while we are at work. I have arrived at the conclusion that I should just put together a USB key that can be plugged in before powering on the computer, to avoid all the trouble. Is this possible with ecryptfs? Is there a tutorial or simple list of instructions available so that I can knock this out and focus back on the stuff I care about? EDIT: I am aware that this is possible with LUKS and dm-crypt, but unfortunately the magical encryption that Ubuntu hands you during the installation is only ecryptfs so my question is specific to that.

  I have connected an external monitor to my laptop through HDMI. Currently either my Desktop is getting extended to the external monitor (with native resolution) or low resolution on both when I choose "Same Image in both". How can I ensure that the external monitor is used by default and the laptop monitor just blanks. I generated the xorg.conf file by doing: X -configure The following is the content of xorg.conf.new file generated in my user folder. Should I copy this anywhere? Should I edit the contents?
