• Should a Perl constructor return an undef or a "invalid" object?

  Question: What is considered to be "Best practice" - and why - of handling errors in a constructor?. "Best Practice" can be a quote from Schwartz, or 50% of CPAN modules use it, etc...; but I'm happy with well reasoned opinion from anyone even if it explains why the common best practice is not really the best approach. As far as my own view of the topic (informed by software development in Perl for many years), I have seen three main approaches to error handling in a perl module (listed from best to worst in my opinion): Construct an object, set an invalid flag (usually "is_valid" method). Often coupled with setting error message via your class's error handling. Pros: Allows for standard (compared to other method calls) error handling as it allows to use $obj->errors() type calls after a bad constructor just like after any other method call. Allows for additional info to be passed (e.g. 1 error, warnings, etc...) Allows for lightweight "redo"/"fixme" functionality, In other words, if the object that is constructed is very heavy, with many complex attributes that are 100% always OK, and the only reason it is not valid is because someone entered an incorrect date, you can simply do "$obj->setDate()" instead of the overhead of re-executing entire constructor again. This pattern is not always needed, but can be enormously useful in the right design. Cons: None that I'm aware of. Return "undef". Cons: Can not achieve any of the Pros of the first solution (per-object error messages outside of global variables and lightweight "fixme" capability for heavy objects). Die inside the constructor. Outside of some very narrow edge cases, I personally consider this an awful choice for too many reasons to list on the margins of this question. UPDATE: Just to be clear, I consider the (otherwise very worthy and a great design) solution of having very simple constructor that can't fail at all and a heavy initializer method where all the error checking occurs to be merely a subset of either case #1 (if initializer sets error flags) or case #3 (if initializer dies) for the purposes of this question. Obviously, choosing such a design, you automatically reject option #2.

• Updating Database from DataSet

  I am having trouble updating my Database from my code using a DataSet. I'm using SQL Server 2008 and Visual Studio 2008. Here is what I've done so far. I have created a table in SQL Server called MyTable which has two columns: id nchar(10), and name nchar(50). I have then created a datasource in my VB.net project that consists of this table using the dataset wizard and called this dataset MyDataSet. I run the following code on a button click: Try Dim myDataSet As New MyDataSet Dim newRow As MyDataSet.MyTableRow = myDataSet.MyTable.NewMyTableRow newRow.id = "1" newRow.name = "Alpha" myDataSet.MyTable.AddMyTableRow(newRow) myDataSet.AcceptChanges() Catch ex As Exception MsgBox(ex.Message) End Try when I run this and check the rows in SQL Server it returns 0 rows What have I missed? How can I add these rows / save changes in a dataset to the database? I have seen other examples that use a TableAdapter but I don't think I want to do this, I think I should be able to achieve this just using a DataSet. Am I mistaken? Help is greatly appreciated!

• Problems with jQuery load and getJSON only when using Chrome

  I'm having an issue with two jQuery calls. The first is a "load" that retrieves HTML and displays it on the page (it does include some Javascript and CSS in the code that is returned). The second is a "getJSON" that returns JSON - the JSON returned is valid. Everything works fine in every other browser I've tried - except Chrome for either Windows or Mac. The page in question is here: http://urbanistguide.com/category/Contemporary.aspx When you click on a Restaurant name in IE/FF, you should see that item expand with more info - and a map displayed to the right. However, if you do this in Chrome all you get is the JSON data printed to the screen. The first problem spot is when the "load" function is called here: var fulllisting = top.find(".listingfull"); fulllisting.load(href2, function() { fulllisting.append("<div style=\"width:99%;margin-top:10px;text-align:right;\"><a href=\"#\" class=\"" + obj.attr("id") + "\">X</a>"); itemId = fulllisting.find("a.listinglink").attr("id"); ... In the above code, the callback function doesn't seem to get invoked. The second problem spot is when the "getJSON" function is called: $.getJSON(href, function(data) { if (data.error.length > 0) { //display error message } else { ... } In this case - it just seems to follow the link instead of performing the callback... and yes, I am doing a "return false;" at the end of all of this to prevent the link from executing. • Break on EXC_BAD_ACCESS in XCode?

  I'm new to iPhone development and XCode in general and have no idea how to begin troubleshooting an EXC_BAD_ACCESS signal. How can I get XCode to break at the exact line that is causing the error? Further trial and error debugging and I found that an NSMutableArray I have a property for on my class was a zombie. I went into the init function for the class and here's the code I was using: if ((self = [super init])) { NSMutableArray *array = [NSMutableArray array]; self.terrainBlocks = array; [array release]; } return self; } I removed the [array release] line and it no longer gives me the EXC_BAD_ACCESS signal, but I'm now confused about why this works. I thought that when I used the property, it automatically retained it for me, and thus I should release it from within init so that I don't have a leak. I'm thoroughly confused about how this works and all the guides and Stackoverflow questions I've read only confuse me more about how to set properties within my init method. There seems to be no consensus as to which way is the best.

• Free solution for automatic updates with a .NET/C# app?

  Yes, from searching I can see this has been asked time and time again. Here's a backstory. I'm an individual hobbyist developer with zero budget. A program I've been developing has been in need of constant bugfixes, and me and users are getting tired of having to manually update. Me, because my current solution of Manually FTP to my website Update a file "newest.txt" with the newest version Update index.html with a link to the newest version Hope for people to see the "there's an update" message Have them manually download the update sucks, and whenever I screw up an update, I get pitchforks. Users, because, well, "Are you ever going to implement auto-update?" "Will there ever be an auto-update feature?" Over the past I have looked into: WinSparkle - No in-app updates, and the DLL is 500 KB. My current solution is a few KBs in the executable and has no in-app updates. http://windowsclient.net/articles/appupdater.aspx - I can't comprehend the documentation http://www.codeproject.com/KB/vb/Auto_Update_Revisited.aspx - Doesn't appear to support anything other than working with files that aren't in use wyUpdate - wyBuild isn't free, and the file specification is simply too complex. Maybe if I was under a company paying me I could spend the time, but then I may as well pay for wyBuild. http://www.kineticjump.com/update/default.aspx - Ditto the last sentence. ClickOnce - Workarounds for implementing launching on startup are massive, horrendous and not worth it for such a simple feature. Publishing is a pain; manual FTP and replace of all files is required for servers without FrontPage Extensions. I'm pretty much ready to throw in the towel right now and strangle myself. And then I think about Sparkle... EDIT: I came across SparkleDotNET just then. Looks good, though the DLL is 200 KB. Don't know if that's really that big of an issue, though.

• How to effectively use WorkbookBeforeClose event correctly?

  On a daily basis, a person needs to check that specific workbooks have been correctly updated with Bloomberg and Reuters market data ie. all data has pulled through and that the 'numbers look correct'. In the past, people were not checking the 'numbers' which led to inaccurate uploads to other systems etc. The idea is that 'something' needs to be developed to prevent the use from closing/saving the workbook unless he/she has checked that the updates are correct/accurate. The numbers look correct action is purely an intuitive exercise, thus will not be coded in any way. The simple solution was to prompt users prior to closing the specific workbook to verify that the data has been checked. Using VSTO SE for Excel 2007, an Add-in was created which hooks into the WorkbookBeforeClose event which is initialised in the add-in ThisAddIn_Startup private void wb_BeforeClose(Xl.Workbook wb, ref bool cancel) { //.... snip ... if (list.Contains(wb.Name)) { DailogResult result = MessageBox.Show("some message", "sometitle", MessageBoxButtons.YesNo); if (result != DialogResult.Yes) { cancel = true; // i think this prevents the whole application from closing } } } I have found the following ThisApplication.WorkbookBeforeSave vs ThisWorkbook.Application.WorkbookBeforeSave which recommends that one should use the ThisApplication.WorkbookBeforeClose event which I think is what I am doing since will span all files opened. The issue I have with the approach is that assuming that I have several files open, some of which are in my list, the event prevents Excel from closing all files sequentially. It now requires each file to be closed individually. Am I using the event correctly and is this effective & efficient use of the event? Should I use the Application level event or document level event? Is there a way to prevent the above behaviour? Any other suggestions are welcomed VS 2005 with VSTO SE

• Unable to connect to UNC share with WindowsIdentity.Impersonate, but works fine using LogonUser

  Hopefully I'm not missing something obvious here, but I have a class that needs to create some directories on a UNC share and then move files to the new directory. When we connect using LogonUser things work fine with no errors, but when we try and use the user indicated by Integrated Windows authentication we run into problems. Here's some working and non-working code to give you an idea what is going on. • jQuery ajax success chaining Internet Explorer Issues

  I have a jQuery ajax function that retrieves JSON data. In the success block I call another function to parse the data and update the page. At the end of this parsing/updating function a different ajax call is made. This works perfectly in all browsers except Internet Explorer (7 and 8). The problem is Internet explorer thinks the script is taking too long to process because the success block from the first ajax call doesn't complete until the 2nd ajax call finishes. I get the message: "Stop running this script? A script on this page is causing your web browser to run slowly. If it continues to run, your computer might become unresponsive." My jQuery code: $("#id_select").bind("change", function(e){ $.ajax({ url: "/retrieve_data.js", data: {id:$(e.target).children(":selected").attr("value")}, type: "get", dataType:"json", success: function(data, status, form){ processData(data); }, error: function(response, status){ alert(response.responseText); } }); }) Any suggestions on how to get IE to stop timing out or to accomplish this task without rewriting all my jQuery functions would be appreciated.

  I was testing a String multiplier class with a multiply() method that takes 2 numbers as inputs (as String) and returns the result number (as String) `public String multiply(String num1, String num2); I have done the implementation and created a test class with the following test cases involving the input String parameter as 1) valid numbers 2) characters 3) special symbol 4) empty string 5) Null value 6) 0 7) Negative number 8) float 9) Boundary values 10) Numbers that are valid but their product is out of range 11) numbers will + sign (+23) 1) I'd like to know if "each and every" assertEquals() should be in it's own test method? Or, can I group similar test cases like testInvalidArguments() to contains all asserts involving invalid characters since ALL of them throw the same NumberFormatException ? 2) If testing an input value like character ("a"), do I need to include test cases for ALL scenarios? "a" as the first argument "a" as the second argument "a" and "b" as the 2 arguments 3) As per my understanding, the benefit of these unit tests is to find out the cases where the input from a user might fail and result in an exception. And, then we can give the user with a meaningful message (asking them to provide valid input) instead of an exception. Is that the correct? And, is it the only benefit? 4) Are the 11 test cases mentioned above sufficient? Did I miss something? Did I overdo? When is enough? 5) Following from the above point, have I successfully tested the multiply() method?

• asp.Net 2005 "Could not load type"

  Although I have seen dozens of forum questions relating to "Could not load type", none of the advice in them seemed to apply to my situation. I wrote a new web application using aspx.net VB 2005. It is tiny, with just 2 pages, 1 of which has no code-behind. It runs aok in the IDE but when I installed it on my pc (and also when installed on the production server), and tried to run it this error came up: Parser Error Description: An error occurred during the parsing of a resource required to service this request. In the ruby folder I have created a ruby file in which I have written code to access some model which is present in the rails application using active resource.   I have a Moose class that i would like to store using Apache::Session::File. However, Apache::Session::File by default will not store it and instead i get the error message: (in cleanup) Can't store CODE items at blib\lib\Storable.pm (autosplit into blib\lib\auto\Storable\_freeze.al)... This problem can be circumvented by setting $Storable::Deparse = 1; $Storable::Eval = 1; in order to allow CODE references to be serialized. The offending method in the Moose class is listed below, which retrieves a column from a mysql database: sub _build_cell_generic { my ($self,$col) = @_; my $sth = $self->call_dbh('prepare','select '.$col.' from '.$self->TABLE.' where CI = ? and LAC = ? and IMPORTDATE = ?'); $sth->execute($self->CI,$self->LAC,$self->IMPORTDATE); my $val = $sth->fetchrow_array; $sth->finish; return defined $val ? $val : undef; } So presumably the dbh object (isa DBIx::Connector) contains CODE references. Is there a better alternative in order to allow serialization of this Moose class than setting $Storable::Deparse and $Storable::Eval ?

• Sending custom PyQt signals?

  I'm practicing PyQt and (Q)threads by making a simple Twitter client. I have two Qthreads. Main/GUI thread. Twitter fetch thread - fetches data from Twitter every X minutes. So, every X minutes my Twitter thread downloads a new set of status updates (a Python list). I want to hand this list over to the Main/GUI thread, so that it can update the window with these statuses. I'm assuming that I should be using the signal / slot system to transfer the "statuses" Python list from the Twitter thread, to the Main/GUI thread. So, my question is twofold: How do I send the statuses from the Twitter thread? How do I receive them in the Main/GUI thread? As far as I can tell, PyQt can by default only send PyQt-objects via signals / slots. I think I'm supposed to somehow register a custom signal which I can then send, but the documentation on this that I've found is very unclear to a newbie like me. I have a PyQt book on order, but it won't arrive in another week, and I don't want to wait until then. :-) I'm using PyQt 4.6-1 on Ubuntu Update: This is an excert from the code that doesn't work. First, I try to "connect" the signal ("newStatuses", a name I just made up) to the function self.update_tweet_list in the Main/GUI thread: QtCore.QObject.connect(self.twit_in, QtCore.SIGNAL("newStatuses (statuses)"), self.update_tweet_list) Then, in the Twitter thread, I do this: self.emit(SIGNAL("newStatuses (statuses)"), statuses) When this line is called, I get the following message: QObject::connect: Cannot queue arguments of type 'statuses' (Make sure 'statuses' is registered using qRegisterMetaType().) I did a search for qRegisterMetaType() but I didn't find anything relating to Python that I could understand.

• Trying to debug a 'Assertion failure in -[UIActionSheet showInView:]' error....

  I am working through "Beginning iPad Application Development" and am getting hung up in Chapter 3 where I have created a project that works with an Action Sheet.   Unfortunately, I can't seem to get a simple Apache VHost online. I used to simply have one VHost which bound to all: <VirtualHost *:80>, but this isn't appropriate for security anymore. I need to have one VHost for localhost requests (ie my dev server) and one for incoming requests via my domain name. • Please help to clean up my RoR development environment

  I started RoR development a few months ago, and being new to Mac... Time flies and now I have a lot different ruby versions, rails versions and gems versions located everywhere......And currently I installed rvm and things got even worst, all things messed! And so I started want to clean all things and use rvm again! I want to uninstall all gems, all rails, and all ruby versions, except the system's default one (the very old one born with the mac). Or any other better solutions or suggestions!? How is a port uninstalled? Mostly: When will I have to manually remove the catalog entry using the provided command? Also, what is a catalog entry? is that what appears when I type "sudo port search inkscape" ? I am kind of a MacPorts install n00b. Thanks very much for your time.

  I have a small project written in Scala 2.9.2 with unit tests written using ScalaTest. I use SBT for compiling and running my tests. Running sbt test on my project makes the JVM segfault regularly, but just compiling and running my project from SBT works fine. Here is the exact error message: Invalid memory access of location 0x8 rip=0x10959f3c9 [1] 11925 segmentation fault sbt I cannot locate a core dump anywhere, but would be happy to provide it if it can be obtained. Running java -version results in this: java version "1.6.0_37" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_37-b06-434-11M3909) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.12-b01-434, mixed mode) But I've also got Java 7 installed (though I was never able to actually run a Java program with it, afaik). Another issue that may be related: some of my test cases contain titles including parentheses like ( and ). SBT or ScalaTest (not sure) will consequently insert square parens in the middle of the output. For example, a test case with the name (..)..(..) might suddenly look like (..[)..](..).   Hey Guys I have made one project which is showing the inventory of the stock of one store. In that inventory the software should store data of the products with their images. There is one problem... Bcz of the lots of stock, the screen on which is image is loading taking a lot of time. So, i thought i should give the frame in which there will be on label which will show the "Loading Software". But now when i am setting visible = true for that frame, but bcz of that images screen class loading problem my frame is not showing correctly. I have put screen shot, now my code. • Apache Tomcat under Windows: Changing webapps default directory

  I am deploying my Java application with Ant. Unfortunately my test deployment on the local machine doesn't work because of Vista. The Program Files directionaries are protected and i don't want to start Ant or Eclipse as an Admin. So i had the idea to move my webapps folder to a workspace subfolder, so i can use relative paths in Ant as well. The solutions seems to be to modify the Host element in the server.xml. With Linux it isn't such a deal: <Host name="localhost" appBase="/path/to/webapps" unpackWARs="true" autoDeploy="true" xmlValidation="false" xmlNamespaceAware="false"> But with Windows i don't get it right. • Opencv application crashes at runtime with error code 0x0000142

  I have openCV and minGW installed with codeblock IDE following the instructions found here http://kevinhughes.ca/tutorials/opencv-install-on-windows-with-codeblocks-and-mingw/ i tried the simple image loading program in the article and the build process went fine. but when i tried running the output program, it crashes with the error message "the application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000142). Click OK to close the application." I used Dependency Walker to see if the program failed to load dll module and here's the output screen of Dependency Walker https://www.dropbox.com/s/f9iaftdt8atjwpl/Screenshot%202013-11-05%2022.21.45.png i am not used to DW but as i can see in its output screen, some openCV dll failed to load and the loaded Windows DLL were 64 bit instead of 32 bit (as minGW is 32 bit). I can't figure out why as i already configure the Path environment variable for the bin directory of openCV and the app still can not load the dll modules. And i think that Windows will automatically load the proper 32 bit DLLs when a 32 bit app is run but this situation the app still failed to load. Anyone has ideas?
