  The last few months I have been spending a lot of time designing (and help design) the developer experience for the areas I contribute to (in future versions of Visual Studio). As a technical person who defines feature sets, it is easy to get engulfed in the pure technical side of things and ignore the details that ultimately make users "love" using the product to achieve their goal, instead of just "having to use" it. Engaging in UX design helps me escape that trap. In case you are also interested in the UX side of development, I thought I'd share an interesting site I came across: UX myths. • New Office 2010 theme added for creating current UIs

The new theme applies the latest Microsoft UI - Office 2010 to Visual WebGui and allows developers and/or end users (of 6.4.0 and above) to switch their Web applications UI to the successful design of Office 2010. After the latest update the new theme is integrated into the Visual WebGui Developers CompanionKit which now matches Visual WebGui 6.4.0 Release version's infrastructure. • MEF to the rescue in Task-it

  One of the frameworks that I chose to leverage in the development of my Silverlight 4 Task-It application is MEF, the Managed Extensibility Framework. Actually, that decision came while I was at a Silverlight Deep Dive session on the Microsoft campus in Redmond, WA, and came at the recommendation of John Papa (Microsoft Silverlight Evangelist) and Glenn Block (the MEF Maniac). If you are not familiar with MEF, its primary function is to provide a framework for extensibility in Silverlight applications, however, what I found is that MEF's capabilities go beyond just this. As a matter of fact, Microsoft announced at MIX this week that its new Silverlight Analytics Framework would use MEF for composition. • Website hosting and deployment

  I'm relatively new to Web Development especially when it comes to infrastructure. I have AngularJS application build and served by brunch.io locally. It uses rails-api JSON data. I'd like to deploy my angular application separately from rails server. For now, JS app is placde inside public directory of backend server and deployed together. It isn't elegant nor effective so I want to use some other hosting service. I was thinking about VPS where I could place both Angular and Ruby applications. I read about NodeJS or Nginx that can serve static files, but I don't have any knowledge or experience with these technologies. How is the best way to provide separate frontend and backend applications communicating with each other?

  Possible Duplicate: Is there such a thing as Programmer's block? Has anyone had writers block? Currently, I am trying to get back in to a development role but am struggling to develop any apps. I have a good understanding of VB and OOP. I developed last in the first version of .net studio and also foxpro 9. At the moment I have tried building a customer order app, the form and database have been straight forward but I'm struggling with the nuts and bolts of the application. Should it be a Web or Windows application? Should I use classes/modules? All advice is welcome.

• System Slow After Uprading Ubuntu

  i have an ubuntu network machine which has release of 10.04.1 LTS Lucid. on this system i have apache, postgresql and django. for some app. development i have to install php and php-curl... due to being on network, i have exported wmvare machine to internet and firstly i have upgraded system and then install php5 packages on it. After all replacing it with its old place, i have considered that the new system query is some slow according to another. Old system query time : 140 ms New system query time : 9.11 s i have checked /etc/network interface and it seems there is no problem. i have checked /etc/resolv.conf and it seems ok i have checked /etc/nsswitch.conf and only host section is different from old one which old system has hosts: files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns mdns4 and then i have checked time host -t A services.myapp.com and i got real 0m0.355s user 0m0.010s sys 0m0.020s and now what can i have to check for boosting my system as before?

• Track url from Amazon S3 using Google Analytics

  I couldn't find any decent pay per view video solutions for low budget clients. So I'm considering using a membership extension with Joomla and hosting the video with amazon S3. The only issue is that once someone has signed up to view or download the video if they have any web development experience they will be able to get the url of the video and freely publish it on the web. How can this be prevented? It looks like it can be done using IAM User Temporary Credentials - AWS SDK for PHP but the client would prefer not to have to pay someone to spend hours writing custom php code to get this to work. With Amazon s3 I could at least check the log files I guess to manually monitor the url but is there a way to track the url with Google Analytics? or is there a more elegant solution?

• Create an Asynchronous JAX-WS Web Service and call it from Oracle BPEL 11g

  This posting is the result of a simple requirement to take an existing JAX-WS Web service,convert it to be asynchronous and call it from Oracle BPEL 11g It turned out that this is not a trivial task... BPEL has some very specific expectations about the WSDL for an asynchronous process. One approach is to develop the service starting from a WSDL document that meets BPEL's requirements. This is possible but requires considerable WSDL authoring skills. The other approach is to modify the WSDL generated by Web Service Annotations in Java code (Bottom up development) and instruct JAX-WS to use that WSDL instead of dynamically generating one from annotations. This is the approach taken in this article. This posting details how to: Modify a JAX-WS Web Service developed using a "Bottom up " approach to have an asynchronous method and callback. Der neue Produktname wird "Oracle Audit Vault and Database Firewall" sein. Software und Dokumentation werden in den nächsten Tagen zum Download verfügbar sein. • In centralized version control, is it always good to update often?

  Assuming that: You are in a team developing some software. Your team is using centralized version control in the development process. You are working on a new feature which will surely take several days to complete, and you won't be able to commit before that because it would break the build. Your team members commit something every day that affects some of the files you're working with for your fancy new feature. Since this is centralized version control, you will have to update your local checkout at some point: at least once right before committing the new feature. If you update only once right before your commit, then there might be a lot of conflicts due to the many other changes by your teammates, which could be a world of pain to resolve all at once. Or, you could update often, and even if there are a few conflicts to resolve day by day, it should be easier to do, little by little. Can we say that it is always a good idea to update often?

• If you had two projects with the same specification and only one was developed using TDD how could you tell?

  I was asked this question in an interview and it has been bugging me ever since. You have two projects, both with the same specification but only one of these projects was developed using Test Driven Development. You are given the source for both but with the tests removed from the TDD project. How can you tell which was developed using TDD? All I was able to muster up was something about the classes being more 'broken up' in to smaller chunks and having more visible APIs, not my proudest moment. I would be very interested to hear a good answer to this question.

• RPi and Java Embedded GPIO: Connecting LEDs

  Next, we need some low-level peripherals to connect to the Raspberry Pi GPIO header. So, we'll do what's called a "Fry's Run" in Silicon Valley, which means we go shop at the local Fry's Electronics store for parts. In this case, we'll need some breadboard jumper wires (blue wires in photo), some LEDs, and some resistors (for the RPi GPIO, 150 ohms - 300 ohms would work for the 3.3V output of the GPIO ports). And, if you want to do other projects, you might as well by a breadboard, which is a development board with lots of holes in it. Ask a Fry's clerk for help. Or, better yet, ask the customer standing next to you in the electronics components aisle for help. (Might be faster) So, go to your local hobby electronics store, or go to Fry's if you have one close by, and come back here to the next blog post to see how to hook these parts up. Hinkmond

• How to use different php.ini files for different VirtualHosts?

  I have my site and it's staging subdomain running on the same CentOS machine running apache. The subdomain is created using a VirtualHost, and I use it to find any bugs before I push to production. I want the php.ini file for the staging VirtualHost to be a development one, and the production site will use a production php.ini. How can I configure apache to use different php.ini files? I don't want to use php_value/php_flag for everything, I'd rather just use the php.ini file I already have available. I've tried creating an .htaccess file that looks like this, SetEnv PHPRC /path/to/php.ini/directory This has no effect, as phpinfo() tells me it's still using /etc/php.ini. I've also tried setting PHPIniDir for both virtual hosts (www and staging) and it complains about seeing the directive twice.

• Problem installing LibreOffice; please help!

  I followed the instructions for installing LibreOffice found here, which are basically the same instructions found all over askubuntu and the web in general. I followed the instructions (including removing OO first) for gnome; all that is in my Applications menu now is LibreOffice (OO used to have OpenOffice Spreadsheet, OpenOffice Presentation, etc.) When I open LibreOffice, I get the splash screen/menu, but all of the choices for creating new docs are greyed out. It also will not open any office/type files (no errors; they just don't open.) The terminal commands indicated that installation was successful, but obviously something is missing. I'm guessing I can just reinstall OO from the software center, but I'd really like to give LibreOffice a try, given the lack of ongoing development on OO. Can anyone help me out?

• Wiki based requirements engineering tool

  Hi, I'm looking to to build a wiki based tool the helps/aides in the requirements engineering process. More specifically I am hoping to end up with a tool that helps inexperienced users easily create and design requirements documents on a wiki platform. I was wondering if there exist any wiki/wiki platforms that either already exist or are easily extendible or would be worth looking at that for this purpose. For instance some of the features I was hoping to add would be to add structure to a document so that information is filled out in a standardised manner. Another idea I was looking at was to somehow create relationships between different types of documents (for example- a goal diagram gets evolves/ helps in the development of the class diagram). So far I have come across FOSwiki which claims to to fully customisalble...but I'm not sure what it means and what I can really do with that. Any input on FOSwiki is also highly appreciated.

Tags Matching Some of your enhancements talked  about paired tags matching to be able to see matching tags at first glance.We have good news for you that this feature you can try out already in our latest PHP Development builds and of course later in NetBeans 7.3. Unpaired Tags Errors To make easier detecting of template syntax issues, we provide basic tags pairing. If you forgot to begin some paired Smarty tag or you end it unexpectedly you should get error hint which complains about your issue. That's all for today. • Scrum got specific ways for testing software?

  When reading Scrum Guide, as the official text for scrum, I find out there is no specific solution to provide software testing in scrum. (the only hint is on page15) I'm a little vague on whether scrum is considered a software development methodology or not? If it is not, then how come some of its practices opposes Extreme Programming? (I know that in scrum guide, the author notes that scrum is a framework not a methodology, but still I'm not pretty clear on that) And what's more, I'm not sure if there are any other important textbook that I'm missing so far about scrum. I need them to be official or of great deal of public acceptance.

• Examples and Best Practices for Seeding Defects?

  Defect Seeding seems to be one of the few ways a development organization can tell how thorough an independent testing group is. I'm a fan of using metrics to help counter overconfidence biases, and drive discussions around facts. With that said, I haven't seen Seeding Defects used in practice. Are there best practices above and beyond what McConnell explained? Are there public examples where this has been done? In the absence of the above, any thoughts on why it hasn't been done more?
