• Does Ubuntu run well on an USB HDD?

  I have here a company notebook, and because the HDD is full encrypted, I cannot install an extra partition for another system that I would like to use in my free time. And I really need another system, because this crap Windows here with that much of anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-whatever on it is so slow and annoying. What can I do? I could use an external USB HDD with another system. Because I would like to handle big files and so on, I don't want to use a USB stick. A USB 2.5 HDD + Ubuntu is what I think the best option. Here are my questions: Do I have to note something? Does Ubuntu run well on an external HDD? Do I have big performance problems (because of the USB HDD)? Should I buy a very fast HDD for much money or it is not that important? Any suggestions?

  I'm building myself a nice setup with a massive amount of screen real estate. Since I had/have problems with video drivers in the past. I'm asking for advise here first. I want to connect at least six screens. What are the best options? What are the pitfalls? I preferably would not like to use closed binary blob drivers. usecase scenario: I'm writing a piece of software that has to interact with other systems. I would like to be able to see all of those systems, my code, lots of log files and documentation without the need to swap windows/screens. To just better see what im doing.

  I am looking for a (best open-source or free but also commercially available) CMS platform that is built similarly to bulletin boards (for example phpBB) but instead of text posts, registered users can upload files that can be rated, commented etc.) I am aware of the number of board CMSes that have file-database plugins, but that is not what I want. I want to have a system that focuses on the files rather than on the postings. Or do you have any alternative ideas on solutions to the problem? • Design patterns for effects between actors and technology

  I'm working on my first game, and taking the opportunity to brush up my C++ (I want to make as much of it as portable as I can.) Whilst working on the technology tree and how it affects actors (spaceships, planets, crew, buildings, etc) I can't find a pattern that decouples these entities enough to feel like a clean approach. Just as an idea, here's the type of effects these actors can have on one another (and techs too) An engineer inside a spaceship boosts its shield A hero in a spaceship in a fleet increases morale A technology improves spaceships' travel distance A building in a planet improves its production The best I can come up with is the Observer pattern, and basically manage it more or less manually (when a crew member enters a spaceship, fire the event; when a new building is built in a planet, fire the event, etc etc.) but it seems to be too tightly coupled to me. I would love to get some ideas about how to approach this better.

• Rendering scaled-down card images

  I have high-quality SVG card images, but they drastically lose their quality when I downsize them. I have tried two ways of rendering cards (using Inkscape and Imagemagics): 1) Render SVG to high-res PNG and resize it then: inkscape -D --export-png=QS1024.png --export-width=1024 QS.svg convert QS1024.png -filter Lanczos -sampling-factor 1x1 -resize 71x QS71.png 2) Render SVG to image of proper size at once: inkscape -D --export-png=QS71.png --export-width=71 QS.svg Both approaches generate blurry card images, which looks even worse than old Windows cards. What are the best way to generate smaller card images from SVG sources and not to loose their quality a lot? UPDATE: I am using Inkscape to render SVG - PNG and ImageMagick then to downsize PNG. I've tried using convert -resize with couple of filters (Lanczos/Mitchell/etc), but result was pretty much the same. Original: 71x raster:

• Why make JavaScript class based?

  JavaScript is a prototype language. To turn it into a class based language adds little value? I am not talking about best-practice here. I remember reading an article from way back, which claimed that the class-based worldview is perceivably more flawed than the one of prototypes. I am resisting to use the class-based jQuery add-on and other attempts at faciliating class-based JavaScript.   There are two types of documentation. One type, the Implementation Documentation, contains information about specific implementation of a construct (eg. Class, Method, etc.). It is targeted to the future me, maintainer, debugger and so on. And there is Usage Documentation, containing information how to use a provided api. It does not contain information about specific implementation and is targeted to users of the api. How do I include both of them in one file? (Or do I include both of them in one file? And if not, what type belongs into the source file?) Are there special techniques, using java-doc and/or best practices?

• Alternative to "inheritance v composition??"

  I have colleagues at work who claim that "Inheritance is an anti-pattern" and want to use composition systematically instead, except in (rare, according to them) cases where inheritance is really the best way to go. I want to suggest an alternative where we continue using inheritance, but it is strictly forbidden (enforced by code reviews) to use anything but public members of base classes in derived classes. For a case where we don't need to swap components of a class at runtime (static inheritance), would that be equivalent enough to composition? Or am I forgetting some other important aspect of composition?

• How do I morph between meshes that have different vertex counts?

  I am using MeshMorpher from the Unify wiki in my Unity project, and I want to be able to transform between arbitrary meshes. This utility works best when there are an equal number of vertices between the two meshes. Is there some way to equalize the vertex count between a set of meshes? I don't mean that this would reduce the vertex count of a mesh, but would rather add redundant vertices to any meshes with smaller counts. However, if there is an alternate method of handling this (other than increasing vertices), I would like to know.

  According to my research, the best solution to use ubuntu server as a DVR system would be ZoneMinder. is there any alternatives to zoneminder out there? I'm not really happy it only has a web interface to control/view my cameras. And it doesn't have an option to record video stream non-stop. Am I missing something in its configuration? And the thing I really disappointed, I cant find a way to control my PTZ camera with it. what do manufacturers sell along with their standalone linux powered dvr systems?

  I have a problem that I want you to help me, I am currently making a website, I am building that website on HTML5 and CSS3 technology, every feature I'd like to use I check it first in "CAN I USE", the technology I use most is box-shadow, and I already made some great things with it but, I have a doubt about the percentage of browser that don't support that technology, the percentage of browser that do not support box-shadow is around 17.12%, and if you see the conclusions (show options = other options = show conclusions) they say that that feature isn't ready yet because they are "Waiting for Opera Mini 5.0-6.0 to expire", I personally think that the best that we can do in order to make people update their browsers is not support older browser, but ... am I right thinking like this? will I have bad consecuences if I don't support older browsers? is worth to work twice just to support older browsers? should I still working with box-shadow?

• Cursor freezes for 5 secs every now and then

  I've installed Ubuntu 11.04 (64bit) on my new Thinkpad Edge 11 laptop from Lenovo with the following specs: Processor type AMD Athlon II Neo Processor Speed 1.8 GHz Memory Type DDR3 SDRAM RAM 2048 MB Hard Drive Type HDD Harddisk 250 GB Grafic processor ATI Mobility Radeon HD 6310 Ubuntu has found all my hardware and it works perfectly. I have one irritating problem though: From time to time (sometimes every minute, other times every hour)the cursor freezes for about 5 sec. This happens independently from the number of processes running on the laptop. It's only the cursor that freezes - I can still tab between windows and use the keyboard. I've installed GPointingDeviceSettings, activating the trackpoint, which btw works perfectly. Also I have installed the ATI Catalyst proprietary display driver. Anyone has an idea of whats wrong? • Library and several small programs that use it: how should I structure my git repository?

  I have some code that uses a library that I and others frequently modify (usually only by adding functions and methods). We each keep a local fork of the library for our own use. I also have a lot of small "driver" programs (~100 lines) that use the library and are used exclusively by me. Currently, I have both the driver programs and the library in the same repository, because I frequently make changes to both that are logically connected (adding a function to the library and then calling it). I'd like to merge my fork of the library with my co-workers' forks, but I don't want the driver programs to be part of the merged library. What's the best way to organize the git repositories for a large, shared library that needs to be merged frequently and a number of small programs that have changes that are connected to changes in the library?

• Website hosting and deployment

  I'm relatively new to Web Development especially when it comes to infrastructure. I have AngularJS application build and served by brunch.io locally. It uses rails-api JSON data. I'd like to deploy my angular application separately from rails server. For now, JS app is placde inside public directory of backend server and deployed together. It isn't elegant nor effective so I want to use some other hosting service. I was thinking about VPS where I could place both Angular and Ruby applications. I read about NodeJS or Nginx that can serve static files, but I don't have any knowledge or experience with these technologies. How is the best way to provide separate frontend and backend applications communicating with each other?

• Is there a way to use a SSH connection to access SMB or UPnP files without setting up a VPN?

  What I'm trying to do is set up a SSH key that only gives access to certain directories, for security reasons I don't want it to have full access to my SSH server. I already have the ability to access the directories I need over my local network (right now using SMB, although I also used UPnP for awhile). I need, however, to be able to access those files securely over the internet from both Ubuntu and Windows machines. I'm somewhat new to SSH and not sure what the best approach to solving my problem is. If anyone knows how I can do this or where I can find a detailed tutorial I'd be grateful. And as always if anything is confusing or if there are any comments or corrections please let me know.

• "Super meatboy"-ish replay

  I'm making a platformer built from mini-levels - and I want to create a sort of a replay of all the player tries that the player did for the level. My question is - what is the best way to record the player's actions in-game, so that I could replay them later when he finishes the level. I thought about recording only the player's input and replay them later on, each on a clone of the player. The problem I have with this is with dynamic obstacles (that could be moved around) - if one clone moves them, it throws the simulation off for the rest of the clones. So then I thought about recording every frame the X/Y of the player, and then just replay it - but that seems it could cause a major memory leak and very ineffective. So - does anyone have any ideas? :)
