  I hate this error message: Msg 8134, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Divide by zero error encountered. What is the best way to write SQL code, so that I will never see this error message again? I mean, I could add a where clause so that my divisor is never zero. Or I could add a case statement, so that there is a special treatment for zero. Is the best way to use a NullIf clause? Is there better way, or how can this be enforced?

• Best practices for fixed-width processing in .NET

  I'm working a .NET web service that will be processing a text file with a relatively long, multilevel record format. Each record in the file represents a different entity; the record contains multiple sub-types. (The same record format is currently being processed by a COBOL job, if that gives you a better picture of what we're looking at). I've created a class structure (a DATA DIVISION if you will) to hold the input data. My question is, what best practices have you found for processing large, complex fixed-width files in .NET? My general approach will be to read the entire line into a string and then parse the data from the string into the classes I've created. But I'm not sure whether I'll get better results working with the characters in the string as an array, or with the string itself. I guess that's the specific question, string vs. char[], but I would appreciate any other pointers anyone has. Thanks.

  How would one consume an iCal/.ics file in YQL? Given an .ics such as: http://www.hebcal.com/export/ba/8a35a5efbb27548bc0272b94b8de96.ics?subscribe=1&v=1&year=2010&month=x&nh=on&tag=fp.ql&c=off How would I go about using YQL to select certain events based on fields, etc. I've tried the standard formats, and the only format that seems to even parse the file is HTML - which puts it all in a <p>, and removes the line returns that give the file meaning. I've had some success with using Yahoo Pipes' Fetch Feed Source, but was wondering if it's possible to do this entirely in YQL. Any ideas?

• Prototyping Object in Javascript breaks jQuery?

  I have added a simple .js to my page that has some pretty mundane common-task sort of functions added to the Object and Array prototypes. Through trial and error I've figured out that adding any function to Object.prototype, no matter it's name or what it does causes javascript errors in jQuery: The culprit? Object.prototype.foo = function() { /*do nothing and break jQuery*/ }; The error I'm getting line 1056 of jquery-1.3.2.js, in the attr:function { } declaration: /*Object doesn't support this property or method*/ name = name.replace(/-([a-z])/ig, function(all, letter) { return letter.toUpperCase(); }); Apparently G.replace is undefined. While it's obvious that there's something I'm just not wrapping my head around with prototyping, I'm failing miserably to figure out what it is. To be clear, I'm not looking for a workaround, I have that handled... what I'm looking for is an answer to 'Why?'. Why does adding a function to Object.prototype break this bit of code?

• Knowledge base web app -- need a demo mode

  I was contracted to build an on-line knowledge base that searches and cross-references many thousands of replacement parts for a niche industry. My client furnishes this app to his customers on a subscription basis. It uses MySQL and PHP and it works great. I want to deploy it in "demo mode" to sell my skills. I want the user to see the functions, but I have to guard the data for my client. My first idea was to obfuscate the results. That's at cross-purposes with showing how well it searches. I'm considering a limit on how many searches you can perform, but that's awkward too as someone could visit every day and get more answers than we would prefer. Other posts I've found are about letting people interact with an app, but without the challenge of protecting a big knowledge base. Can you suggest an approach? (Note, I put the tag obfuscation, but not sure it applies because java code obfuscation seems to be unrelated.)

  XPDFs pdftotext converts pdf to text and outputs it at command line level. If needed it inserts PageBreaks between the pages as specified in TextOutputDev.cc: eopLen = uMap->mapUnicode(0x0c, eop, sizeof(eop)); This Unicode symbol is encoding independent, -enc ASCII7 wouldn't change it. I'm currently willing to use PHP for converting and splitting the PDF file into several TXT pages for database storage. However, the following function does work, but takes twice as long as a conversion of the whole book in one time. for($i = 1; $i <= $pages[0]; $i++) $page[$i] = shell_exec('/usr/bin/pdftotext sample.pdf -f '.$i.' -l '.$i.' -'); How am I supposed to explode(0x0c, $wholePDF) with an Unicode character as separator? • Adding text over existing PDFs using reportlab

  I'm interested in filling out existing PDF forms programatically. All I really need to do is pull information from user input and then place the appropriate text over an existing PDF in the appropriate locations. I can already do this with reportlab by feeding the same sheet of paper into a printer, twice, but this just really rubs me the wrong way. I'm tempted to just personally reverse engineer each existing PDF and draw every line and character myself before adding the user-inputted text, but I wanted to check to see if there was an easy way to take an existing PDF and set it as a background for some extra text. I'd really prefer to use python as it's the only language I feel comfortable with. I also realize that I could just scan the document itself and use the resulting raster image as a background, but I would prefer the precision of vector graphics. It seems like ReportLab has a commercial product with this functionality, and the specific function I'm looking for is in it (copyPages) - but it seems like overkill to pay for a 4 figure product for a single, simple function for a nonprofit use.

  I am attempting to import a Certificate into the Current User - Personal store using the command line "importpfx -f [certificate name.p12] -p [password] -t USER -s Personal". It works, but for reasons I don't understand there are now two Personal stores under the Current User, and the imported certificate is in the new Personal store. When I try to connect to the website of [well-known money transfer service], it fails. However, if I manually import the certificate using MMC into the original Personal store, it works. My question is: How can I force IMPORTPFX to import the certificate into the original Personal store, and how can I delete the new Personal store? Context: I need to do a silent import of certificates on 3000+ remote point-of-sale devices, so it needs to be a silent install via PSEXEC (SysInternals).

• iPhone app running in Instruments fails with unrecognized selector

  I have an app that appears to run without problems in normal use. The Clang Static Analyzer reports no problems either. When I try to run it in Instruments, it fails with an unrecognized selector exception. The offending line is a simple property setter of the form: self.bar = baz; To figure out what's going on, I added an NSLog() call immediately above it: NSLog(@"class = %@ responds = %d", [self class], [self respondsToSelector:@selector(setBar:)]); self.bar = baz; On the emulator (without Instruments) and on a device, this shows exactly what I'd expect: class = Foo responds = 1 When running under Instruments, I get: class = Foo responds = 0 I'm stumped as to what could cause this. Perhaps a different memory location is getting tromped on when it's in the Instruments environment? Can anyone suggest how I might debug this?

• Getting "Object is read only" error when setting ClientCredentials in WCF

  I have a proxy object generated by Visual Studio (client side) named ServerClient. I am attempting to set ClientCredentials.UserName.UserName/Password before opening up a new connection using this code: InstanceContext context = new InstanceContext(this); m_client = new ServerClient(context); m_client.ClientCredentials.UserName.UserName = "Sample"; As soon as the code hits the UserName line it fails with an "Object is read-only" error. I know this can happen if the connection is already open or faulted, but at this point I haven't called context.Open() yet. I have configured the Bindings (which uses netTcpBinding) to use Message as it's security mode, and MessageClientCredentialType is set to UserName. Any ideas?

  I'm dealing with a large WPF application that is outputting a large number of binding errors. A typical error looks like this: System.Windows.Data Error: 4 : Cannot find source for binding with reference 'RelativeSource FindAncestor, AncestorType='System.Windows.Controls.ItemsControl', AncestorLevel='1''. BindingExpression:Path=HorizontalContentAlignment; DataItem=null; target element is 'MenuItem' (Name=''); target property is 'HorizontalContentAlignment' (type 'HorizontalAlignment') Problem is I don't know where in the app this is coming from. Searching the entire solution for AncestorType={x:Type ItemsControl} doesn't necessary help since I still don't know which result is the culprit. I've tried setting PresentationTraceSources.DataBindingSource.Switch.Level = SourceLevels.All; but the extra information doesn't help locate the problematic bindings. File names and line numbers is really what I need. Is there anyway to get this information?

  I have a MVVM WPF application that basically wants to be a single line diagram designer for an electrical distribution network. I have a canvas that must contains transformers, circuit breaker, lines and cables. My big problem is the design... How can i start? I think about a DesignerView, DesignerViewModel that contains an ObservableCollection of IDesignerItemViewModel that is my base class for all the element. But in this case I have to use ItemsControl to bind the content of the canvas to my collection but the pros is that I don't have to create usercontrol for each element but i'll solve most of the problems with DataTemplate (i suppose). Each element viewmodel mantain a link to a model persisted in a repository where i mantain my logical tree. Any hint about how to proceed, I have looked at many DiagramCanvas example but all of those use simple items most like simple rectangle...

• error executing aapt, all of the sudden

  I know there are a lot of these topics around but none seem to help in my case, nor describe it exactly. The best similar one is aapt not found under the right path. My problem is that I can be using Eclipse for a whole evening programming, compiling and using my device, and then suddenly I get "error executing aapt" for my current project and ofcourse R.java isn't (properly) generated anymore. I then restart Eclipse and everything goes away. I'm seeing this once a day on average however. I've recently switched to amd64 and installed the latest Android-2.3 SDK and matching tools. I know that there is now a platform-tools folder that has an aapt version that should work SDK version independently. At first I had added this directory to my PATH, as instructed on the SDK website. I've also tried not adding it to my path and making a link platforms/android-9/tools so that every SDK version might use it's own old copy. Needless to say, platform-tools/aapt is there and has the right permissions, and I have been able to execute it on the command-line at any time. When I do write a faulty xml file or sorts, and appropriately get an error, I see an extra line that says "aapt: /lib32/libz.so.1: no version information available". I'm running a recent Gentoo linux system. I have everything installed to support x86 on amd64, but have re-emerged emul-linux-x86-baselibs and zlib just to be sure. The problem persists. I do see some pages that spell horror over some zlib bugs, but I'm not sure if that's related. I realize I'm not on the reference Ubuntu platform, but surely the difference cannot be that great? It might very well be a bug in aapt or the tools itself. Why would it suddenly stop working? I also experience that the ids in R.java were incorrect, namely that simple findViewById() code would give ClassCastExceptions because of mixed ids the one time, and then work perfectly without any changes bu only a "clean project", in the aftermath of a failing aapt. Does it smell like a bug perhaps (otherwise let's report it (again))? Update 2010-01-06: I've gained some more knowledge. When I recently was trying to export a signed apk, I ran into another error message (full details from the Eclipse error view) regarding aapt I hadn't seen before. Note here too, that I can just restart Eclipse and can export apks again without problems, at least for a little while. I'm starting to think it is related to lack of memory on my system. The message "onvoldoende geheugen beschikbaar" means "insufficient memory available". I have also been seeing insufficient memory errors in DDMS when I'm dumping HPROF files. • Axis2 and WSDL2Java: SOAP header is missing

  I've generated the java code from wsdl using WSDL2Java. I create a SOAP requestand I send it to the server, which answers with an AxisFault. If I have a look in the soap request there is now header tag . Why not?
