• Running Virtualbox as a Transparent Bridge

  I am setting up Untangle in a Sun VirtualBox VM. I plan on using this machine as a transparent bridge to filter and monitor traffic on my network. I'm not sure how to configure the network adapters for the virtual machine under the Virtualbox's "Devices" menu so that it will function as a transparent bridge. I guess what I'm asking is, should both adapter 1 & 2 be set as Bridged adapters or what? Any help is greatly appreciated.

• How to add usbnet driver to the Linux kernel?

  I want to add usb network support to a real-time Linux distribution we're using at work. USB devices are recognized, but when connecting a usb network adapter no network interface is created. From what I've read this requires recompiling the kernel build with usbnet support enabled. I don't mind doing this, but the problem is that I can't seem to find any instructions on how to do this. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Is it possible? The integrated display adapter won't show up in the device manager at all. The monitor is plugged in and powered, and working, but doesn't show up in display settings.   Anyone know how to share an Internet connection over Ethernet, from Mac OSX to Ubuntu (Lucid Lynx 10.04)? EDIT Mac receives Internet access via Airport (Wireless). I don't need any Mac-Ubuntu file sharing, just need to access the Internet through the Mac. (The reason for this is that the Ubuntu box's wireless adapter isn't supported by the default 10.04 install, so I need to connect Ubuntu to the net with a wired connection to update certain packages.)

• How to troubleshoot port forwarding on Windows 7 (64 Bit) with ICS enabled?

  I want to forward some ports (1666 for perforce, 8081 for Hudson) on my Internet Gateway machine. This machine is running Windows 7 (64 Bit, legal, user-account) and connected to the Internet via cable modem (it's not a router). The Windows machine is sharing its Internet Connection via ICS and that works fine on all connected computers. I can access the services via the gateway's public IP (95.x.x.x) on the given ports if they are running on the gateway machine itself. I've added the ports and destination IP address (192.168.0.18) in the Internet network adapter's Advanced Settings dialog (Sharing tab). That's the same dialog where you have a list of preconfigured services like HTTP, FTP and other incoming services. When I do that I can't connect to the services anymore. For some reason port forwarding isn't working. I have uninstalled Bitdefender because I wanted to check if the Firewall interferes. I've also disabled the Windows Firewall and Defender to no avail. I tried a freeware tool that helps to setup port forwarding but that didn't work either. The target machine is a Mac OS X computer whose Firewall is disabled. The IP is static. I can successfully connect to the services using the local IP address (192.168.0.18) from two different machines, including the gateway computer. So internally and externally it seems to me that the ports are open and not blocked, and the issue is with port forwarding itself. From what I understand it should be enough to add an entry to the Advanced Settings dialog to enable port forwarding when there are no firewalls interfering. How can I troubleshoot why port forwarding isn't working for me? What steps should I follow to alleviate the issue? PS: I gladly accept command line solutions. Other things I've tried: adding an Inbound Rule to Windows Firewall for the 1666, 8081 ports trying with Windows Firewall enabled and disabled disabling/enabling the network adapter double-checked that the IP addresses are correct mapping a different incoming port to the service's actual port followed or checked the misc tips in this article What I haven't dared trying yet (let me know if it's worth a shot): disable/enable ICS remove all network adapters (via Control Panel), then re-install and re-configure them

• svn connection timeout

  I have Ubuntu 12.04 running in virtual box inside Windows 7. I have the network adapter set as NAT and everything networking wise seems to be running smoothly (internet / git ect.). However, for some reason, svn always times out when i.e michael@michael-VirtualBox:~/Documents/deleteme$ svn co svn://svn.openwrt.org/openwrt/trunk/ svn: Can't connect to host 'svn.openwrt.org': Connection timed out Somebody suggested to me that I might need to change what ports svn uses. Does anybody have any idea how to diagnose / solve the problem? Thanks!

• Connecting to DB2 from SSIS

  The project I'm currently working on involves moving various pieces of data from a legacy DB2 environment to some SQL Server and flat file locations.  Most of the data flows are real time, so they were a natural fit for the client's MQSeries on their iSeries servers and BizTalk to handle the messaging.  Some of the data flows, however, are daily batch type transmissions.  For the daily batch transmissions, it was decided that we'd use SSIS to pull the data direct from DB2 to either a SQL Server or flat file.  I'm not at all an SSIS guy, I've done a bit here and there, but mainly for situations were we needed to move data from a dev environment to QA, mostly informal stuff like that.  And, as much as I'm not an SSIS guy, I'm even less a DB2/iSeries guy.  Prior to this engagement, my knowledge of DB2 was limited to the fact that it's an IBM product and that it was probably a DBMS flatform (that's what the DB in DB2 means, right?).   One of my first goals when I came onto this project was to develop of POC SSIS package to pull some data from DB2 and dump it to a flat file.  It sounded like a pretty straight forward task.  As always, the devil is in the details.  Configuring the DB2 connection manager took a bit of trial and error.  As such, I thought I'd post my experiences here in hopes that they might save someone the efforts I went through.  That being said, please keep in mind, as I pointed out, I'm not at all a DB2 guy, so my terminology and explanations may not be 100% spot on. Before you get started, you need to figure out how you're going to connect to DB2.  From the research I did, it looks like there are a few options.  IBM has both an OLE DB and .Net data provider which can be found here.  I installed their client access tools and tried to use both the .Net and OLE DB providers but I received an error message from both when attempting to connect to the iSeries that indicated I needed a license for a product called DB2 Connect.  I inquired with one of my client's iSeries resources about a license for this product and it appears they didn't have one, so that meant the IBM drivers were out.  The other option that I found quite a bit of discussion around was Microsoft's OLE DB Provider for DB2.  This driver is part of the feature pack for SQL Server 2008 Enterprise Edition and can be downloaded here. As it turns out, I already had Microsoft's driver installed on my dev VM, which stuck me as odd since I hadn't installed it.  I discovered that the driver is installed with the BizTalk adapter pack for host systems, which was also installed on my VM.  However, it looks like the version used by the adapter pack is newer than the version provided in the SQL Server feature pack.   Once you get the driver installed, create a connection manager in your package just like you normally would and select the Microsoft OLE DB Provider for DB2 from the list of available drivers. After you select the driver, you'll need to enter in your host name, login credentials and initial catalog. A couple of things to note here.  First, the Initial catalog needs to be the same as your host name.  Not sure why that is, but trust me, it just does.  Second, for credentials, in my environment, we're using what the client's iSeries people refer to as "profiles".  I guess this is similar to SQL auth in the SQL Server world.  In other words, they've given me a username and password for connecting to DB, so I've entered it here. Next, click the Data Links button.  On the Data Links screen, enter your package collection on the first tab. Package collection is one of those DB2 concepts I'm still trying to figure out.  From the little bit I've read, packages are used to control SQL compilation and each DB2 connection needs one.  The package collection, I believe, controls where your package is created.  One of the iSeries folks I've been working with told me that I should always use QGPL for my package collection, as QGPL is "general purpose" and doesn't require any additional authority. Next click the ellipsis next to the Network drop-down.  Here you'll want to enter your host name again. Again, not sure why you need to do this, but trust me, my connection wouldn't work until I entered my hostname here. Finally, go to the Advanced tab, select your DBMS platform and check Process binary as character. My environment is DB2 on the iSeries and iSeries is the replacement for AS/400, so I selected DB2/AS400 for my platform.  Process binary as character was necessary to handle some of the DB2 data types.  I had a few columns that showed all their data as "System.Byte[]".  Checking Process binary as character resolved this. At this point, you should be good to go.  You can go back to the Connection tab on the Data Links dialog to perform a couple of tests to validate your configuration.  The Test Connection button is obvious, this just verifies you can connect to the host using the configuration data you've entered.  The Packages button will attempt to connect to the host and create the packages required to execute queries. This isn't meant to be a comprehensive look SSIS and DB2, these are just some of the notes I've come up with since I've started working with DB2 and SSIS.  I'm sure as I continue developing my packages, I'll find more quirks and will post them here.

• Windows Azure Root CAs and SSL Client Certificates

  I ran into some problems while trying to make SSL client certificates work for StarterSTS 1.5. In theory you have to do two things (via startup tasks): Unlock the SSL section in IIS Install all the root certificates for the client certs you want to accept I did that. But it still does not work. While inspecting the event log, I stumbled over an schannel error message that I’ve never seen before: “When asking for client authentication, this server sends a list of trusted certificate authorities to the client. The client uses this list to choose a client certificate that is trusted by the server. Currently, this server trusts so many certificate authorities that the list has grown too long. This list has thus been truncated. The administrator of this machine should review the certificate authorities trusted for client authentication and remove those that do not really need to be trusted.” WTF? And indeed standard Azure (web role) VMs trust 275 root CAs (see attached list). Including kinda obscure ones. I don’t really know why MS made this design decision. It seems just wrong (including breaking the SSL client cert functionality). Deleting like 60% of them made SSL client certs from my CA work. • HSDPA modem only working on certain USB ports

  Depending on which USB port I use to connect my HSDPA modem, the network manager will connect to the internet or not. I used to work (i.e. established a internet connection automatically) on all ports, but over time it simply stopped on some ports. lsusb output in all cases looks like that (Device ID varies depending on USB port): Bus 001 Device 009: ID 12d1:1003 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. E220 HSDPA Modem / E270 HSDPA/HSUPA Modem Any ideas what could cause this behaviour? What can I do to fix this? ADDED One additional information about the modem: if connected via USB it will be available as as harddrive AND as a HSDPA modem (kind of a duality...). In the error case, it will only be shown as a harddrive.   I am trying to get wifi direct working on a laptop with ubuntu 12.04 When I type the command 'iw list' it doesn't show P2P-client or P2P-go under 'supported interface modes.From http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Documentation/iw/replace-iwconfig I found that 'iwconfig' was replaced with 'iw'.Does it mean that my hardware doesn't have support for wifi-direct or is it just the software(drivers) issue? If is it just sofware issue please help me to find the right drivers which support wifi-direct.   I had Ubuntu 11.10 and in the last few weeks I experienced an obscure problem: after I had the computer running for a few days I could no longer connect to google.com or anything related to google. All sites worked with all browsers (Firefox, chrome, opera) except google. It remained in the connecting phase for a few minutes and either timed out or finally connected with this huge delay. Even if I entered other sites such as this one, if it had anything to do with google such adsense or gstatic or whatever with g in it, that site took a long time to load waiting in connecting to gstatic.com . Anything google related took minutes to work, but everything else worked instantly! I tried rebooting or using other machine(with windows on it) and this worked, so it's not network related. But after a few days it started not working again... So I upgraded to the Precise Pangolin hoping this behavior would go away. It didn't! After a few days I get the same behavior as in 11.10. What am I supposed to do? Reboot every other day? I didn't have this problem with neither 10.10 or 11.04. • Why does my PowerBook display “Fixing recursive fault but reboot is needed!” and stop booting?

  I have an old PowerBook G4 that worked (more or less) fine with a previous installation of Ubuntu Desktop 12.04. A few days ago I decided to install Ubuntu Server instead, and got a copy of Ubuntu Server 12.10. The installation seemed to complete successfully, but now, whenever I try to boot the system, it simply halts at some point after I unlock the hard disk. There is a lot of text on the screen (which is normal for me during a boot, except now it's mostly errors and debug information), the last of which is this: [ 26.338228] Fixing recursive fault but reboot is needed! Pressing control command power to force a reboot yields exactly the same results. A search for the error message turned up many temporary solutions involving kernel parameters, but none of them have worked for me. I don't think I can remove the default set of parameters (which I think is quiet splash), but I can pass additional parameters on boot. I've tried booting on AC and battery power, as well as using these combinations of kernel parameters while on battery power: acpi=enable pci=noacpi pci=assign-busse acpi=ht acpi=off nomodeset nomodeset acpi=off Why am I getting this error and how can I fix it?

• 12.04 on VirtualBox -No internet access on Guest OS

  I have Windows 7 as my Host OS which has wired Ethernet working. My guest OS on VirtualBox is Ubuntu 12.04. The problem is that I cannot browse. I have: Enabled sharing on Windows; Have used NAT, Bridged Adapter etc ( all possible combinations); With NAT, used PCnet-FAST II (Am79c973) combination. Ubuntu says "connected to wired ethernet1" but I cannot access websites. VirtualBox Host-Only Network in the Network and Sharing center shows that I don't have IPV4 and IPV6 connectivity. Meaning I don't have DHCP configured. Strangely I have DNS address correct in the Ubuntu properties.

• Getting exfat support in ubuntu 14.04?

  I looked at all the other questions but none seemed to work so here it goes. I have a microsdxc card that's in an adapter that's in my computer and I cant access it because there is no exfat support so when I do sudo apt-get install exfat-fuse exfat-utils This comes out in the terminal Reading package lists... Nothing seems to work. Any ideas?
