  • sound stopped working after upgrade to 11.10 on Tuesday 20th March

    My sound card stopped working after a set of updates were installed 2 days ago. The sound card is detected, the volume is not muted and the speakers work, I can make the speakers hum if I touch the jack plug lead that normally plugs into the card. hugh@lindisfarne:~$ lspci -v | grep -A7 -i "audio" 07:01.0 Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs CA0106 Soundblaster Subsystem: Creative Labs SB0570 [SB Audigy SE] Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 32, IRQ 16 I/O ports at c000 [size=32] Capabilities: Kernel driver in use: CA0106 Kernel modules: snd-ca0106 I've tried reverting those upgraded packages that look like the could impact the kernal - but to no avail. alsamixer does not have anything muted, I've been though all the sound card debug/troubleshooting pages I can find. Kernal driver is attached. So whats gone pop ? I will boot from CD to check - but I am pretty sure this is a sw and not a hw problem.

  • Loud and annoying noise on login

    I have a PC with Kubuntu 13.10 64-bit on it. The problem is that whenever I log in (automatic log in is enabled), there is a loud double-click noise that sounds from the speakers whether the volume is muted or not. I have two sound cards; the motherboard audio, which is disabled in the BIOS, and the Creative! Labs Sound Blaster X-Fi SB0460, which I have normal speakers plugged into. Does anyone know how to fix this? Relative lspci lines: 00:01.1 Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] BeaverCreek HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 6500D and 6400G-6600G series] 02:05.0 Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs SB X-Fi Using default Phonon backend. (I am not really sure what other information to provide, but will gladly edit in anything upon request.)

  • How to prevent recursive windows when connecting to vncserver on localhost

    I have a VNCServer (vino) configured on my Ubuntu 8.10 box. I would like to connect to this server from a vncclient running on this same machine (the reason for doing this strange thing is mentioned below). Understandably, when I connect to a vncserver on the same box, my vncclient shows recursive windows. Is there a way I can connect to the vncserver on the same machine and not have the recursive windows problem? Perhaps if I could start the vncserver on one display and the client on another display then will it work? How can I do something like this? Note - Reason for running vnc client and server on the same machine: When I start our Java Swing unit test suite, a bunch of swing UI's are created and destroyed as the tests run. These windows fly in the foreground making it impossible to work while the test suite is running. I am hoping to start the test suite within a vncclient so that I can continue working while the tests run.

  • Flash Player Automatic Updater on Windows Startup

    Hi all, Adobe Flash Player is set to automatically check for updates on Windows startup. I've always wondered where exactly it is set to do this. Checking the running services, as well as msconfig does not yield its location. The message in question looks like this: http://www.technipages.com/disable-an-update-to-your-adobe-flash-player-is-available-message-forever.html I know how to disable it via Adobe's web site (instructions are included in link above), but I'm interested in knowing where exactly in Windows is this set to perform this action? I have done some research on this, and people keep saying to check the following registry locations: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce or the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run However, I have checked those locations, and I still cannot locate where this updater is stored. I'm pretty sure that malware also uses this technique to automatically load upon startup, and since it's not in the typical location(s) that a user would look, it's well hidden. Thank you for the assistance!

  • How to recover unsaved PSD file on MacOSX

    Adobe Photoshop creates temporary *.psb files for emergency recovery at this path: ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop CS6/AutoRecover The files created have names like _Untitled-10FDB62ECBABBFF5C8EAD958EBC9CFAE2E.psb with current user:group as designated owner. If you save the file you are working on OR you hit "don't save" when prompted, the temporary files are deleted. Now, system creates and deletes these files. I am trying to recover the emergency file but I think the "undelete" utilities were created assuming the "user" deletes the file - like going into the trash bin and then emptying the trash... Anyone having experience about this? Thanks.

    I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 (karmic). And, my ~/.pam_environment looks like the following. PATH DEFAULT=${PATH}:~/Adobe/Reader9/bin:~/texlive/2009/bin/x86_64-linux GIT_EDITOR DEFAULT=vim MANPATH DEFAULT=${MANPATH}:~/texlive/2009/texmf/doc/man INFOPATH DEFAULT=${INFOPATH}:~/texlive/2009/texmf/doc/info But, echo $PATH returns me duplicated entries as the following. /usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games:~/apps/Adobe/Reader9/bin:~/apps/texlive/2009/bin/x86_64-linux:~/apps/Adobe/Reader9/bin:~/apps/texlive/2009/bin/x86_64-linux I've tried replacing DEFAULT by OVERRIDE in my ~/.pam_environment file. But, that didn't help. Does any one know what's wrong with my ~/.pam_environment?

  • Replacing files in a folder structure with files from an unsorted folder

    I have over 50,000 PDFs organized into folders in a file called PDFACT. I needed to compress these files so I ran them through Adobe to batch compress them and this worked—except Adobe could only output the files without their folder structure. So basically I have 50,000 PDFs set up in a folder with hundreds of subfolders, and everything was organized. I ended up with one folder with 50,000 compressed PDFs in it, just in alphabetical order. Somehow I need to replace all the orginal PDFs with their compressed copies. Let me give an example: In the folder PDFACT we have the following file: C:\PDFACT\BIG DINNER\BILL\NEWESTBILL.PDF … and in the output folder that Adobe created we have just: C:\COMPRESSED_PDF_FOLDER\NEWESTBILL.PDF This copy is smaller then the one in PDFACT and has the same name but it is just lumped in with every other PDF. The folder structure and subfolders are gone. Is there any way to replace all the larger uncompressed PDFS inside the orginal folder structure with their now compressed counterparts?

  • Windows 8 Start Screen: Show programs in order of most frequently used

    For me the Windows 8 Start Screen is just a great bit version of the old Start Menu, but unlike the Start Menu, it doesn't seem to order programs by frequency of use? Consider the following: While I DO use Chrome, Steam, and iTunes a lot. I've never ran Adobe Media Encoder, nor Adobe Extension Manager, nor Acrobat Distiller, or indeed most of the things on that list! Or there a way to change sorting to most frequently clicked on? Or perhaps even create FOLDERS in which to group items (e.g. "Adobe Apps" or "Games" or "Microsoft Office"?). Dragging them one at a time takes an age!

  • CentOS - Yum doesn't update anymore?

    I've been trying to use yum now, but for some reason, not even the search work anymore. I even tried putting packages I already downloaded in the search criteria and is the same. Error: failure: repodata/primary.xml.gz from adobe-linux-x86_64: [Errno 256] No more mirrors to try. This error always appear no matter what I do. Please, can you tell me how to fix this, or at least how to reset yum's configuration?

  • Office features disabled in standalone Outlook

    I have Office 2007 basic suite installed on my computer. I installed Outlook 2010 from a volume license provided by our Email Server Provider. When creating a new email all of the Office features are disabled in the ribbon. This microsoft support article describes my issue, however I do not have Office installed as click and run. It seems to me that there should be a way to make outlook recognize the office suite already installed. The "add or remove features" dialogue accessed through programs and features from the control panel seems promising, however its only options for "office features" are run from computer, or install on 1st run. I can't seem to find any valid articles online that aren't just dealing with the click to run issue. I know that there are several people at my company with the same set up, installed the same way that have everything working fine. How can I get my standalone Outlook 2010 install to recognize the Office 2007 basic suite?

  • Converting PDF portfolios to plain text (pdftotext?)

    I am trying to convert a large number of PDFs (~15000) to plain text using pdftotext. This is working pretty well except for a few of the PDFs (~600) which, I guess, are "PDF portfolios." When I run these PDFs through pdftotext, it just outputs: For the best experience, open this PDF portfolio in Acrobat 9 or Adobe Reader 9, or later. Get Adobe Reader Now! If I do open these PDFs in Adobe Reader, they look like two or more PDFs inside a single file. Has anyone encountered this issue before? Is there any tool I can use to convert these PDFs automatically? (Either directly to text or at least to regular PDFs that pdftotext can then understand.)

  • pass data from popup to parent

    I have a parent w/ a popup child. When parent loads, I have to call a function within the popup without showing the popup (thus, I load "pupLove" but don't include it in layout)....I then pass this data to the parent. When the user manually clicks another button to open the popup, the same function is called & data passed to the parent. However, I am not able to pass dg.length to the parent. I believe the root problem is that I am loading "pupLove" & thus the parents are getting confused.....I'm guessing if I get rid of "pupLove" I can pass the data correctly but will need to call the child's function at creationComplete of the parent....how do I do that?     Firefox 15 includes an all new PDF reader built into the browser–for those of you wondering, that means you can finally disable the Adobe PDF Plugin and uninstall it once and for all. Note: obviously if you need to access more advanced PDF features, you’ll still need the Adobe plugin. For most of us, however, the built-in viewer is fine, or you could download PDF files and read them in the offline Adobe Reader. Enabling Firefox’s Built-in PDF Reader Open Firefox and navigate to about:config. This will bring up a sarcastic warning telling you that you might void your warranty, just click the “I’ll be careful, I promise!” button to move on. Now you will need to search for: browser.preferences.inContent When you find it, right click on it and select Toggle from the context menu. Next you will need enable the actual PDF Reader feature, you can do this by searching for: pdfjs.disabled That’s all there is to it, you can even drag PDF files on your local machine on t0 the Firefox windows to view them! And there is another option: BAM – Business Activity Monitoring. BAM takes the monitoring of BPMN processes one step further. BAM allows you to create more advanced dashboards and even real-time alerts. BAM enables you to make decisions based on real-time information gathered from your running processes.     The advantages of using the Oracle Metadata Services Repository as a central storage for the metadata. SCA has been available since the release of the Oracle SOA Suite 11g. This technology combines and orchestrates several SOA components inside an SCA composite, making design, development, deployment, and maintenance easier. SCA development is metadata-driven, meaning that metadata artifacts, such as Web Services Description Language (WSDL), XML Schema Definition (XSD), XML, others, define the composite's behavior. With the increased number of composites and the dependencies among them, it became necessary to manage all the metadata in an adequate way. This article will address the advantages of using the Oracle Metadata Services (MDS) repository as a central storage for the metadata. The MDS repository is a central part of the Oracle Fusion Middleware landscape, managing the metadata for several technologies, such as Oracle Application Development Framework (Oracle ADF), Oracle WebCenter, and the Oracle SOA Suite. This article is divided into three parts. The first part provides an overview of SCA and MDS. The second part describes some MDS tasks that help in the management of the SCA metadata files inside the repository.   • stress testing opencl/Ati GPU on 12.04

    What does people normally use to stress test their GPU on ubuntu 12.04? I tried installing Phoronix Benchmark suite ubuntu .deb but it tries to install freeglu3-dev and at the same time complains about $ phoronix-test-suite benchmark pts/opencl The following dependencies are needed and will be installed: freeglut3-dev This process may take several minutes. Reading package lists... Building dependency tree... Reading state information... freeglut3-dev is already the newest version. 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 90 not upgraded. There are dependencies still missing from the system: - OpenGL Utility Kit / GLUT 1: Ignore missing dependencies and proceed with installation. 2: Skip installing the tests with missing dependencies. 3: Re-attempt to install the missing dependencies. 4: Quit the current Phoronix Test Suite process. Missing dependencies action: 4 so even if it is installing freeglu3, it still complains about missing GLUT. You can't win against GLUT it seems So, what does people use for this? i mean, really, because i have tried googling for an hour and it is not paying up Thanks!

    Today I hosted a session on the Principles of Service-Oriented Architecture for my colleagues at Capgemini. A very interesting session because everyone had a very clear view on the Oracle SOA Suite and a technical background. What we wanted to do was creating a common view on what a Service-Oriented Architecture is, what the benefits are that can be achieved and what is needed to create a Service-Oriented Architecture. During this very interactive session we moved from a clearly technology view on the matter (Oracle SOA Suite) to an architectural view slicing from business to technology.
