  I'd like to sell instructional videos over the web. Primarily, I'd like uses to subscribe to the site and be allowed access to videos over the internet. Secondarily, I might sell DVDs for those who have poor internet connections or would like a physical copy, or possibly I'd sell eBooks and the like in the future. Regarding the subscriptions: I'd like a system that automatically sends out e-mails when it is time to renew I'd like to be able to offer free trials Users without a free trial or subscription should not be able to access the content Incidentally, I plan to host videos on my current web host and move them to a CDN when volume (and capital) make this a good idea. While I have no intention to go crazy with the DRM, it seems expedient not to directly link to the files -- how can I link to them indirectly? It would be nice to support multiple payment processors -- specifically, I'd like to avoid a PayPal only approach. Are there any web applications (or plugins) you'd recommend for something like this? While I've set up and administered several web technologies, I've never done anything with e-commerce. I see there are possibilities like osCommerce, one friend recommends using WordPress with plugins, and it really appears that for any given CMS, you can graft on components like this, although I imagine that not all are created equal. As I'm not tied to a particular web application (and, while open source software that can run on a LAMP [p=perl, python, php] stack is preferable), I'd like to make a good choice at the beginning.

• Economical DNS hosting separate from local registrar for country specific TLDs - email or web hosting not required

  Our company owns many country specific top level domains (TLDs; .sg, .my). We will purchase more for other countries in all South East Asia. These domains are associated with our websites hosted on Amazon EC2. The DNS records are currently hosted on a dedicated server that will shut down tomorrow. (The name servers are set to the ones of a web hosting company) Therefore, I will need to host the DNS records somewhere else. Hosting the DNS records with the local registrar costs SGD18 a year per domain in addition to the domain price (which is already very expensive but we have no choice). It would be convenience to host DNS recors for all the country specific TLDs we have using a single service, separate from the local registrars from which we bought the domains. A few searches prompted examples like Amazon Route 53 and dnsmadeeasy.com and the likes. However, since I'm only concern about the country specific TLDs, not .com 1) Is it really economical to host DNS records of all domains in 1 single place as described above? (Have the relevant countries and/or the local registrars done something to keep their monopoly and always charges ridiculous prices for their country specific TLDs?) 2) I would imagine I will need to tell the local registrars to update the name servers to those of the DNS hosting service provider e.g. dnsmadeeasy.com here. Am I correct about how it works here? 3) Will I be able point the TLDs themselves to IP addresses I desire (the EC2 instances where my websites are) or will I only able to do so with the subdomains? 4) Are there any drawbacks that I should know here? Background about our needs: We need the websites associated with the country TLDs to be up and running all the times Also, we'll need to be able to add/edit A and CNAME records We use Google Apps for Business for internal email so I will need to be able to add/edit MX records and TXT records

• How can I set up Eclipse to work with a Quickly program?

  I've installed PyDev in Eclipse and have configured my project so that the project lies under Workspace/Eclipse and the Quickly files lies under Workspace/Quickly. To connect the two I've linked the Quickly project by creating a new folder in Eclipse under the project and select the "advanced option" in the dialog to link a folder into the project. That way I don't need to have the Eclipse project files in my Quickly project. But there is two issues that arises for me: In Eclipse I have to select a Python interpreter and I have no idea what to do. I've googled around for an answer but I can't find if Quickly uses Python 3 or 2.7. Can someone help me make an informed choice? (I'm new to developing Python, that's why I can't tell the difference by the syntax - if there even is a difference) I can't press the "Run" button to launch the application. Must I initialize a program with quickly run? I want to be able to debug through Eclipse, how do I configure this? I'm using Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS and the Eclipse version from the repositories. Thanks!

• Visual Studio Continued Excitement

  As you know Visual Studio 2012 RTM’d and then became available in August (Soma’s blog posts told you that here and here), and the VS2012 launch was earlier this month (Soma also told you that here). Every time a release of Visual Studio takes place I am very excited, since this has been my development tool of choice for almost my entire career (from many years before I joined Microsoft). I am doubly excited with this release since it is the second version of Visual Studio that I have worked on and contributed major features to, now that I’ve been in the developer division (DevDiv) for over 4 years. Additionally, I am very excited about the new era that VS2012 starts with VSUpdate for continued customer value: instead of waiting for the next major version of VS to get new features, there is new infrastructure to enable friction-free updates. The first update will ship before the end of this year, and you can read more about it at Brian’s blog post. I also noticed that a CTP of the first quarterly update is available to download here. In the last two months, the VS2012 family of products we all worked on in DevDiv shipped, coinciding with the end of the Microsoft financial/review year, and naturally followed by a couple of organizational changes (e.g. see Jason’s blog post)… On a personal level, this meant that I was very lucky to have an opportunity present itself to me that I simply could not turn down, so I grabbed it! I’ll still be working on Visual Studio, but not in the Parallel Computing part of the C++ team; instead I will be PM-leading the VS Diagnostics team… Stay tuned for details of what is coming in that space, in the VS updates and in the next major VS release, as I am able to share them… Comments about this post by Daniel Moth welcome at the original blog.

• Guide.BeginShowMessageBox wrapper

  While coding for Windows Phone 7 using Silverlight, I was really disappointed with the built-in MessageBox class, so I found an alternative. My disappointment was the fact that: Display of the messagebox causes the phone to vibrate (!) Display of the messagebox causes the phone to make an annoying sound. You can only have "ok" and "cancel" buttons (no other button captions). I was using the messagebox something like this: // Produces unwanted sound and vibration. // ...plus no customization of button captions. if (MessageBox.Show("my message", "my caption", MessageBoxButton.OKCancel) == MessageBoxResult.OK) { // Do something Debug.WriteLine("OK"); } …and wanted to make minimal changes throughout my code to change it to this: // no sound or vibration // ...plus bonus of customizing button captions if (MyMessageBox.Show("my message", "my caption", "ok, got it", "that sucks") == MyMessageBoxResult.Button1) { // Do something Debug.WriteLine("OK"); } It turns out there is a much more powerful class in the XNA framework that delivered on my requirements (and offers even more features that I didn't need like choice of sounds and not blocking the caller): Guide.BeginShowMessageBox. You can use it simply by adding an assembly reference to Microsoft.Xna.Framework.GamerServices. • How to dual-boot Windows XP & Ubuntu 12.04

  When I install Ubuntu 12.04 along side Windows XP, I encountered a choice for "Device for boot loader installation". I selected "Windows XP Professional" Now, when I select Windows XP from the grub, it appeares a black page and Windwos dosent boot. I tried Boot-Repair from Ubuntu but it dosent solve this problem. The only thing that helps me to boot Windwos XP is a Bootable CD of Windows. when I put this CD and boot from CD, it shows some options and when I select "Boot from Hard Drive" , my own Windows boots! • Unity's gone! How do I get it back?

  Earlier today my Unity desktop disappeared: I got a black screen with white text, but it disappeared too quickly for me to read. When the desktop reappeared, it was the Ubuntu Classic desktop. I used $ unity --reset but that did not do anything. I tried rebooting so I could choose unity from the list when I logged in, but although there was Ubuntu choice, there was no unity listed (but classic was listed). I was able to install Unity 2D and am using that, but really want to get 3D back. I had been using Ubuntu without problems for several weeks when this happened. My graphics card is onboard a Dell Latitude desktop - a couple years old - and is reported as an Intel G33/G31. I've looked at other requests for help here, and tried suggestions when they seemed to relate to similar problems, but nothing seems to work so far. Any ideas? Thanks! • Porting Ruby/NCruses Rogue-Like to .NET and FlatRedBall

  I created an awesome rogue-like game in Ruby. For the GUI, I used NCurses. Since I'm using FlatRedBall as my engine of choice for Silverlight game development, I want to port this game over. What is the best way to efficiently doing this, and what are the pitfalls I should expect? For example, Ruby is object-oriented, like C#, and I should be able to just convert (rewrite) classes one by one. However, I will run into issues like: NCurses API. I need to possibly create my own notions of a "Window", or else rewrite GUI code. It's one class, but it's BIG. Mix-Ins. These are essentially aspect-oriented development. There are a couple of solutions in .NET, like dynamic classes. What else? Also, I should mention that I want to create a C# application out of this. As much as possible, I'll dump reusable and helper code, algorithms, etc. into separate projects and generate reusable DLLs.

• isometric drawing order with larger than single tile images - drawing order algorithm?

  I have an isometric map over which I place various images. Most images will fit over a single tile, but some images are slightly larger. For example, I have a bed of size 2x3 tiles. This creates a problem when drawing my objects to the screen as I get some tiles erroneously overlapping other tiles. The two solutions that I know of are either splitting the image into 1x1 tile segments or implementing my own draw order algorithm, for example by assigning each image a number. The image with number 1 is drawn first, then 2, 3 etc. Does anyone have advice on what I should do? It seems to me like splitting an isometric image is very non obvious. How do you decide which parts of the image are 'in' a particular tile? I can't afford to split up all of my images manually either. The draw order algorithm seems like a nicer choice but I am not sure if it's going to be easy to implement. I can't solve, in my head, how to deal with situations whereby you change the index of one image, which causes a knock on effect to many other images. If anyone has an resources/tutorials on this I would be most grateful.

• How do I get a rt2800usb wireless device working?

  My brand new desktop running 13.04 has endless problems with wireless. Dozens of others are flooding forums with reports of the same problems. It worked fine for a few days, then there were a few days where it started having problems sometimes and working sometimes. Now it never works at all. I have 5+ devices all able to connect without any trouble at all, including iPhone, Android phone, 3DS, multiple game consoles, a laptop running windows 7, and even a second desktop machine running Ubuntu 12.04 sitting right behind the 13.04 machine. All other devices have full wireless bars displayed (strong signals). At any moment, one of the following is happening, and it changes randomly: Trying to connect forever, but never establishing a connection. Wireless icon constantly animating. Finds no wireless networks at all. (There are 12+ in range according to other devices.) Will not try to connect to the network. If I use the icon to connect, it will display "Disconnected" within a few seconds. Will continuously ask for the network password. Typing it in correctly does not help. Wireless is working fine. This happens sometimes. It can work for days at a time, or only 10 mins at a time. Various things that usually do nothing but sometimes fix the problem: Reboot. This has the best chance of helping, but it usually takes 5+ times. Disable/re-enable Wi-Fi using the wireless icon. Disable/re-enable Networking using the wireless icon. Use the icon to try and connect to a network (if found). Use the icon to open Edit Connections and delete my connection info, causing it to be recreated (once it's actually found again). Various things that seem to make no difference: Changing between using Linux headers in grub at bootup, between 3.10.0, 3.9.0, or 3.8.0. Move the wireless router very close to the desktop. Running sudo rfkill unblock all (I dunno what this is supposed to do.) I've used Ubuntu for 6 years and I've never had a problem with networking. Now I'm spending all my time reading through endless problem reports and trying all the answers. None of them have helped. I am doing this instead of getting work done, which is defeating the whole purpose of using Ubuntu. It's heartbreaking to be honest. The recommended router changes I did not do, since the current router settings are (I think) required for some of the older devices I have, and because the current settings work on all my modern devices including Ubuntu 12.04 and Windows 7. I do appreciate the advice though, and I'll look into it when I have time. Anything else to try? Update #2 I booted into Ubuntu 12.04.3 from a dvd, and the same problems exist. I have a separate old desktop machine with 12.04 installed that has no wireless problems at all. So obviously the problem is wireless hardware compatibility in both 12.04.03 LTS and 13.04. Update #3 The same problems exist even when using a wired connection. I plugged an ethernet cable directly to the router and the network manager added an "Auto Ethernet" entry, but it cannot establish a connection to it. So the problem is not specific to wireless. Meanwhile, I purchased a Trendnet N300 wireless USB adapter, TEW-664UB. I plugged it in, but I have no idea how to get Ubuntu to try and use it. Can anyone tell me how? Can I download a package on another computer and copy the .deb over to do an install, etc? I'm installing windows 7 to double check that the internet connection works there and it's not just some magically faulty hardware. Thanks for your help.

• Can't boot into windows7/ubuntu 12.04 after running boot-repair

  I have installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my preinstalled windows 7 Sony vaio E series laptop following instructions here: http://www.linuxbsdos.com/2012/05/17/how-to-dual-boot-ubuntu-12-04-and-windows-7/ Everything went well and I am able to boot in to windows after complete installation of Ubuntu. Now following instructions on web I tried to add Ubuntu to my BIOS using Easy BCD (but forget to add windows 7 entry). As a result, I loose windows 7 OS and can't boot in to either OS then I successfully repaired windows 7 using recovery CD. Now my problem is that I can't reinstall Ubuntu 12.04 using Live CD it halts every time before disk partition step giving error. "ubi-partman crashed". "ubi-partman failed with exit code 141. further information may be found in /var/log/syslog. Do you want to try running this step again before continuing? If you do not, your installation may fail entirely or may be broken." and, any choice to continue will result in the same error. After that following some post solutions I ran boot-repair commands in terminal ( in Try Ubuntu mode) and got the following URL: http://paste.ubuntu.com/1206434/ Now, after restart I can't boot into either Windows or Ubuntu. Even any attempt to run Windows repair is failed and I got the message : 'No operating System found' I don't know what went wrong after running boot-repair command. Please help in solving this issue. • JavaOne 2012 Day 1

  Day 1, Sunday, started the night before for those attending the NetBeans Party at Johnny Foley's: Invitations had been sent out prior to the party to all speakers for NetBeans Day, as well as speakers in JavaOne sessions where NetBeans is going to be used. That turns out to be around 40 people, who hung out until quite late, with snacks and drinks. Next day, NetBeans Day had most sessions with completely packed rooms, which means there were around 300 people! Panel discussions around central themes in the NetBeans ecosystem (Java EE, JavaFX, and NetBeans Platform) were held, which resulted in a whole bunch of people up on stage throughout the day, such as this group of speakers in the Java EE session: From left to right above you see Sean Comerford from ESPN.com, John Yeary the Java EE panel moderator and JUG lead from Greenville, Cagatay Civici the PrimeFaces lead developer, Glenn Holmer long time NetBeans enthusiast (more on him below) from the Weyco Group, and NetBeans/Java EE book author David Heffelfinger. There were panels just like the above for JavaFX and the NetBeans Platform too, with very interesting and dynamic talks, such as one by JavaFX book authors Gail and Paul Anderson, who showed off this brilliant JavaFX/NetBeans Platform mashup: NetBeans Day ended with a good discussion about how to get involved in the NetBeans community, wrapping up with an award ceremony with two very special NetBeans community awards: Then everyone caught buses to the Masonic Auditorium, where 4 hours of keynotes took place. This is what the room looked like: The 4 hours ended with a very well received HTML5/NetBeans demo, showing of NetBeans IDE 7.3 features, by NetBeans director John Ceccarelli. And I liked this slide during an earlier keynote session by Oracle VP Hasan Rizvi: There was really a lot of love for NetBeans during the JavaOne keynote sessions and I don't remember hearing any other IDE being mentioned, in any way at all. Next there was the Duke's Choice Award ceremony, outside the Hilton in a cool lounge area, where, among others, Timon and Angelo from the NetBeans Platform community received their awards for AgroSense and MICE. In between all of the above, I met very many friends from previous conferences, as well as several new ones. It was clearly a great start to the conference. • Can One Get a Solid Programming Foundation Without Going To College/University?

  First, I have already searched the site and read all the previous "self-taught vs. college" topics. The majority of the answers defended that going to college was the best choice, for two main reasons: Going to college gives you the paper, which is essential to landing jobs, especially in tough economic times. Going to college gives you a solid programming base, teaching you the principles that will be essential regardless of the language/path you take after. Here comes my question: I am not worried about reason 1 at all, because I already have my own company (I build websites/ do affiliate marketing) and a stable financial situation, so I am pretty sure I won't need to look around for a job. I am worried about reason 2 though. That is, I want to make sure I'll have as solid a programming foundation as anyone else out there, and I am wondering if that is possible with self-learning. Suppose I take my time to study the very basics, like discrete maths, algorithm design, programming logic, computer architecture, Assembly, C programming, databases and data structures - mostly using books,online resources and lots of coding. Say I spend 1-2 years covering those basics. Do you think my foundation would be solid, or still lack in comparison to someone who went to college?

• Visual Basic link to SQL output to Word

  I am in need of some advice/references. I am currently trying to develop a legal document interface. There are certain fields in which I need to query out of my sql db and have those fields output into a document that can be printed. I am trying to develop a user interface where people can enter fields that will output to a document template but at the same time I need the template to be able to pull data from the SQL database. This is the reason why I think that VB might be my best choice and because it is one of the only OOP languages I am familiar with presently. Does anyone know that best way to be able to handle this type of job?? I know that you can use VBA within MS Word and have the form output variables to a word template. But, is there a way to have the word document also pull information from the SQL db? Is the best option to use VB linked to SQL and run queries to get the information from the database and then have it output to a for within VB? Is it possible for VB to be linked to a SQL db and output variables and SQL fields to a Word Template? I have looked into Mail Merge and I see that it allows users to pull data from an Access query but I dont think it would be easy to automate and it seems that users would need to have an advanced knowledge of MS Word and Access to handle this. I am not finding much useful information online so I came here. Any advice or references would be greatly appreciated. If there is a better way please let me know.

• Booting sequence. Ubuntu 12.04 installation and cohabitation with former OSes

  I am on the brink of installing Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pengolin on the first primary partition of my hard-drive. (A day in History for me since I had always kept a MS windows at this first place). But I have some fears: This is my last computer available (In the past I used to have 2 or even 3 machines so I could always un/plug HDs for recovery operations and rescue) The current booting sequence is not straight forard. So as to explain the boot sequence let me briefly sum-up the history of this laptop computer. It was a dedicated Windows Vista computer. 1st and only Primary partition. Then I added Windows 7 (on the 2nd primary partition) letting the Windows Vista Boot Loader manage the boot sequence. Then I added Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx on the 1st sub-partition of the Extended Partitionm asking Grub to be the boot loader. But when I ask Grub to launch windows it launches the Vista BootLoader that manages the choice betzeen Vista and 7. So in theory Grub is on the MasterBootRecord - though I understand where the Vista BootLoader remains. Now, I will no longer use the Ubuntu 10.04 ( on extended partition) and also the Windows vista (on the first primary partition). I will install Ubuntu 12.04 on the First Primary, asking it to install a new bootloader. I want to keep the Windows 7 that is already on the Second Primary partition. And I want it to be loaded by the Ubuntu Boot loader(I don4t knoz zhich is included in this version)... And I am afraid the last point will not work.

  I am teaching the course "Introduction in Programming" for the first-year students and would like to find interesting examples where the datatype size in bits, chosen by design, led to certain known restrictions or important values. Here are some examples: Due to the fact that the Bell teleprinter used 7-bit-code (later accepted as ASCII) until now have we often to encode attachments in electronic messages to contain only 7 bit data. Classical limitation of 32-bit address space leads to the 4Gb maximal RAM size available for 32-bit systems and 4Gb maximal file size in FAT32. Do you know some other interesting examples how the choice of the data type (and especially its binary length) influenced the modern IT world. Added after some discussion in comments: I am not going to teach how to overcome limitations. I just want them to know that 1 byte can hold the values from -127..0..+127 o 0..255, 2 bytes cover the range 0..65535 etc by proving examples they know from other sources, like the above-mentioned base64 encoding etc. We are just learning the basic datatypes and I am trying to find a good reference for "how large" these types are.

• Exadata X3 In-Memory Database Machine: To be or not to be

  Since Larry Ellison announced Oracle Exadata X3 as the new generation of the Database Machine, he established the product in the In-Memory Database arena. And that annoyed some people. We all know that In-Memory Databases are the ones that *only* execute in memory and use the other layers of storage for persistency (mainly disk). Oracle database has always been a technology that uses memory as a caching mechanism and that hasn't change nor it will change with Oracle Database 12c. So this is the central point of fuss when it comes to announcing an Engineered Systems as In-Memory Database, when in fact it still runs Oracle Database, not vanilla but still the same product. Let me tell you purist people out there: when you find no new ground breaking point to get all excited about you decide to bash it, and go against its claims. It's not like a car manufacturer that launches a mini-van in the market and calls it a Sports Car, we are talking about a fundamental change in the ILM stack: level 2 of caching is now self sufficient. It's not DRAM? Who cares, still let's you put in flash amounts of data not done up until now, so I guess Oracle can name it whatever Larry wants because in the end it's something never done before. Now let's imagine that you hop on the pure In-Memory Database bandwagon. You would be stuck with a database technology that lags behind the Oracle Database hundreds of light years in man/hours innovations and features. Do you really want to travel back in time? • Implementing a multilanguage AI contest platform

  This is a followup to this question. To sum: I'm implementing an AI contest site, where each user may submit several AI implementations for different games. Think about Google AI Challenge but instead of just having a big event once a year, I would like it more on a league fashion, with all virtual players playing with each other every some close period of time. I want to support as many programming languages as possible. I've seen that contest sites (like codeforces) ask you to submit a source code and interact through stdin and stdout. The first question is: what is the best way of supporting multiple languages? As I see it, I can either ask people to upload some binary/script, and interact either through stdin/*stdout*, or sockets, or the file system; or ask people to submit source code, and wrap it with whatever is necessary for the interaction. I would like to skip the need to compile the code by myself (in the server, I mean), but I am willing to do it if its the "best" choice. I need to comunicate virtual players with each other, or even better, with some intermediary arbiter. The second question is regarding security. If I'm going to be running user code in my server, I want to ensure strict security conditions, like no file system access, no networking, etc. Otherwise it would be a safe heaven for hackers. I will be implementing the engine/arbiter in .NET. I would like to support at least C#, C++, Java and Python for the user's implementations. I'm willing to write interfaces for each of these languages to simplify the user interaction with the system. Thanks in advance.

• What is a generic term for name/identifier? (as opposed to label)

  I need to refer to a number of things that have both an identifier value (used in code and configuration), and a human-readable label. These things include: database columns dropdown items subapplications objects stored in a dictionary I want two unambiguous terms. One to refer to the identifier/value/key. One to refer to the label. As you can see, I'm pretty settled on the latter :) For the former, identifier seems best (not everything is strictly a key, and value and name could refer to the label; although, identifier usually refers only to a variable name), but I would prefer to follow an established practice if there is one. Is there an established term for this? (Please provide a source.) If not, are there any examples of a choice from a significant source (Java APIs, MSDN, a big FLOSS project)? (I wasn't sure if this should be posted here or to English Language & Usage. I thought this was the more appropriate expert audience. Happy to migrate if not.)

• Hallmarks of a Professional PHP Programmer

  I'm a 19 year old student who really REALLY enjoys programming, and I'm hoping to glean from your years of experience here. At present, I'm studying PHP every chance I get, and have been for about 3 years, although I've never taken any formal classes. I'd love to some day be a programmer full time, and make a good career of it. My question to you is this: What do you consider to be the hallmarks or traits of a professional programmer? Mainly in the field of PHP, but other, more generalized qualifications are also more than welcome, as I think PHP is more of a hobbyist language and may not be the language of choice in the eyes of potential employers. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Above all, I don't want to wast time on something that isn't worth while. I'm currently feeling pretty confident in my knowledge of PHP as a language, and I know that I could build just about anything I need and have it "work", but I feel sorely lacking in design concepts and code structure. I can even write object oriented code, but in my personal opinion, that isn't worth a hill of beans if it isn't organized well. For this reason, I bought Matt Zandstra's book "PHP Objects, Patterns, and Practice" and have been reading that a little every day. Anyway, I'm starting to digress a little here, so back to the original question. What advice would you give to an aspiring programmer who wants to make an impact in this field? Also, on a side note, I've been working on a project with a friend of mine that would give a fairly good idea of where I'm at coding wise. • Distributed transactions and queues, ruby, erlang

  I have a problem that involves several machines, message queues, and transactions. So for example a user clicks on a web page, the click sends a message to another machine which adds a payment to the user's account. There may be many thousands of clicks per second. All aspects of the transaction should be fault tolerant. I've never had to deal with anything like this before, but a bit of reading suggests this is a well known problem. So to my questions. Am I correct in assuming that secure way of doing this is with a two phase commit, but the protocol is blocking and so I won't get the required performance? It appears that DBs like redis and message queuing system like Rescue, RabbitMQ etc don't really help me a lot - even if I implement some sort of two phase commit, the data will be lost if redis crashes because it is essentially memory-only. All of this has led me to look at erlang - but before I wade in and start learning a new language, I would really like to understand better if this is worth the effort. Specifically, am I right in thinking that because of its parallel processing capabilities, erlang is a better choice for implementing a blocking protocol like two phase commit, or am I confused?
