  • Deleting certain files sits at "preparing to recycle" on Windows 7?

    - by Rachel
We recently setup one of our users with a brand new Windows 7 computer, however she is unable to delete certain files. With some testing, I found I cannot move, rename, or view properties of these files either. When trying to delete the file, it just sits at the "Preparing to recycle" popup, however the "from" section says "Discovering items..." Clicking "More Details" on the popup shows me that it can't find the file name or where it's recycling from: Other notes... All the affected files are .pdf files that get created via a scanner. Other pdf files are fine. Opening the files works fine. I can open the file, Save As a new file, and delete the new one just fine Trying to delete the file via command prompt just sits there Rebooting the computer will let me manipulate the files like normal, however this user is responsible for scanning hundreds of documents a day and I'd rather not have to tell her to reboot her computer to delete files. The user is part of the administrator group on the computer The Owner of the affected files is the user attrib of files is just A

  • Bulk Deleting All Messages in a Folder in Microsoft Outlook Web Access

    - by Chris S
How do you delete all messages in a folder in Outlook, preferrably through Web Access? I left my Outlook account unattended for several days (on vacation) and when I got back I found several folders with over 5k emails, mostly error logging or spam. When I try to open the Outlook client, it just locks up, presumably unable to download that many emails. I can view at most 100 emails at a time, but I can't select all emails to delete or permanently delete them immediately, so manually deleting this many emails is going to take a while. Gmail has a similar feature to select and delete all emails in a folder, and that's free so I figure being a quality non-free product from Microsoft, Outlook should have a similar feature (yes that's sarcasm). I've Googled, but I'm not finding anything. Is this possible?

  • Cannot remove storage account because of lease, but I already deleted the server [closed]

    - by djechelon
I recently created a temporary virtual server on Azure. Then I deleted it. I wanted to delete the storage account associated with it because I didn't need it any more. The problem is that the VHD file is still associated to a non-existing virtual machine!! If I try to delete the VHD from Virtual Machines\Disks I get the Delete button greyed and the table tells me it's still associated with the old VM. If I go to storage administration and try to delete the blob from vhds/ directory I get there is an active lease. I've read on Azure forums that, in these case, one should try to force releasing the lease from the blob. I followed their instructions and downloaded their script, but running it failed. The script detected that the disk is associated to a Virtual Machine and can't be deleted. The problem is that I'm 1000000% sure that I already deleted the VM. In fact, I currently only have a single VM that has its own HD and is up and running fine! What can I do to delete that storage account that is probably sucking money from my pocket?

  • Removing orphaned iTunes songs from hard drive

    - by JubJub
Some times when I delete songs from iTunes it does not ask me if I also want to delete it from the hard drive. As a result I have a bunch of songs that are taking up space in my hard drive that are not in iTunes. I have over 3000 files, is there an automated way to find files on the hard drive that are NOT in iTunes? I want to delete them so that they are not taking up space.

  • Ubuntu nasty error: The panel encountered a problem while loading xxxApplet

    - by Phuong Nguyen
I have install ubuntu & GNOME (say, with minimum possible number of packages). I can login and do anything as I want. However, there is a nasty thing: Whenever I loggin in, I see this message: Error The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFIID:GNOME_FastUserSwitchApplet" Do you want to delete the applet from your configuration [Don't Delete] [Delete] If I press [Delete] then the error won't be shown anymore. However, for every new created account, the message shown again (use created using sudo adduser user_name). Since I clone this OS into several virtual instance, and create new account on these instances. I wonder if there is a way to configure my ubuntu so that new created user don't have to see this annoy message? Thanks

  • Break a hard link of a file in use

    - by Stebi
I used hard links to merge duplicated files on my SSD (space is still precious) and now have a weird problem. Common files like msvcr110.dll got hard linked. Now I want to delete a program which has this file in its installation directory. But I cannot because this file (on another location) is used by a currently running application (don't know which) and windows doesn't allow me to delete this file because it's in use. I can rename the file but it still points to the same file, so not possible to delete it. Is there any way to break a the hard link of a file which is currently in use? I currently use a trash folder where I move those files to so I can delete the directory structure of program to be deleted. But I'd like to get rid of this leftover (although it doesn't take much space as it's a hard link).

  • Linux clock loses 10 minutes every week

    - by PaKempf
One of my linux server's clock loses 10 minutes every now and then, nearly every week. I update the time so it stays correct, and although it doesn't really bother me, i'd like to fix it. I've been searching around a bit. Nothing can be responsible in the crontab, and i can't find any related message in the logs. Some people seem to use ntp to fix that kind of issue, but i'd prefer not to use an unecessary component on it. • What will Time Machine do when

    - by Joel Budgor
When Time Machine says "I will delete the oldest files first" does it mean this literally. Here is a theoretical example. Source Drive: 300 GB, consisting of 1 280 GB file and a 1 GB file. Backup Drive: 300 GB The initial backup will backup both files, using 281 GB. If I modify the 1 GB file 21 times, what will Time machine do when I run out of room on the backup drive; Delete the original 280 GB because it is the oldest file or delete the oldest version of the file I have modified 21 times. I hope it would delete the oldest version of the file I have modified 21 times, but I want to be sure. Thanks, Joel Budgor

  • Removing folders from sycn parternships in Windows 7

    - by KE.
A while back I set my computer up to sync folders on a shared network drive. I didn't choose my folders carefully and ended up with a huge amount of files to sync, which took forever. I would like to stop sync on those folders, then later select some smaller subfolders to sync. I believe this means I first must delete the existing sync partnerships, but there is no "Delete" option when I list them in Sync Center. How can I delete existing sync partnerships?

  • If some standards apply when "it depends" then should I stick with custom approaches?

    - by Travis J
If I have an unconventional approach which works better than the industry standard, should I just stick with it even though in principal it violates those standards? What I am talking about is referential integrity for relational database management systems. The standard for enforcing referential integrity is to CASCADE delete. In practice, this is just not going to work all the time. In my current case, it does not. The alternative suggested is to either change the reference to NULL, DEFAULT, or just to take NO ACTION - usually in the form of a "soft delete". I am all about enforcing referential integrity. Love it. However, sometimes it just does not fully apply to use all the standards in practice. My approach has been to slightly abandon a small part of one of those practices which is the part about leaving "hanging references" around. Oops. The trade off is plentiful in this situation I believe. Instead of having deprecated data in the production database, a splattering of "soft delete" logic all across my controllers (and views sometimes depending on how far down the chain the soft delete occurred), and the prospect of queries taking longer and longer - instead of all that - I now have a recycle bin and centralized logic. The only tradeoff is that I must explicitly manage the possibility of "hanging references" which can be done through generics with one class. Any thoughts?

  • Implementation details of database synchronisation API

    - by Daniel
I want to achieve a database synchronisation between my server database and a client application. The server would run MySQL and the applications may run different database technologies, their implementation isn't important. I have a MySQL database online and web accessible via an API I wrote in PHP (just a detail). My client application ships with a copy of the online data. As time passes my goal is to check for any changes in the online database and make these updates available to the client app via an API call, by sending a date to an API endpoint corresponding to the last date the app was updated, the response would be a JSON filled with all new objects and updated objects, and delete IDs, this makes possible to update the local store appropriately. Essentially I want to do this: http://dbconvert.com/synchronization.php My question is about the implementation details. Would I need to add a column to my database tables with a "last modified" date? Since the client app could be very out of date if it's been offline for a long time, does that also mean I shouldn't delete data from the online database but instead have another column called "delete" set to 1 and a modified date updated appropriately? Would my SQL query simply check for all data with a modified date superior then the date passed into the API request by the client? I feel like there's a lot more to it then having a ton of dates everywhere. And also, worry that I will need to persist a lot of old data in order to ensure that old versions of the client app always have the opportunity to delete parts of their data when they are able to sync.

  • How do I mount a CIFS share via FSTAB and give full RW to Guest

I just noticed that if I copy a file to the share after mounting, my Ubuntu client immediately make "nobody" be the owner, and the group "no group" has read and write, with everyone else as read-only. What am I doing wrong?

  • Designing object oriented programming

    - by Pota Onasys
Basically, I want to make api calls using an SDK I am writing. I have the following classes: Car CarData (stores input values needed to create a car like model, make, etc) Basically to create a car I do the following: [Car carWithData: cardata onSuccess: successHandler onError: errorHandler] that basically is a factory method that creates instance of Car after making an API call request and populating the new Car class with the response and passes that instance to the successHandler. So "Car" has the above static method to create that car, but also has non-static methods to edit, delete cars (which would make edit, delete API calls to the server) So when the Car create static method passes a new car to the successHandler by doing the following: successHandler([[Car alloc] initWithDictionary: dictionary) The success handler can go ahead and use that new car to do the following: [car update: cardata] [car delete] considering the new car object now has an ID for each car that it can pass to the update and delete API calls. My questions: Do I need a cardata object to store user inputs or can I store them in the car object that would also later store the response from all of the api calls? How can I improve this model? With regards to CarData, note that there might be different inputs for the different API calls. So create function might need to know model, make, etc, but find function might need to know the number of items to find, the limit, the start id, etc.

  • How to keep track of user images when using a CDN? [closed]

    - by Programmer
We are considering moving our user profile images from the local server to the Rackspace CDN (Cloud Files). However, how do you keep track of where each user's profile image is located on the CDN? Wouldn't you have to store the CDN URL for each user image in the local Database and query it every time you display a user image? Isn't that slower than accessing a user image directly on the local server which requires no such DB query to retrieve since you already know where it is stored based on the user's User ID? What if a user has an album of pics? How would you keep track of all those images that belong just to that one user? What about the order of those pics? In the case of the Rackspace CDN, we're looking at using a Container for each individual user to help keep things more logically organized, but we don't know what the best way to track all of it is since the CDN provides a seemingly random URL for each image. To make matters worse, you can't even delete a non-empty Container belonging to a user when they delete their account, you actually have to delete each object inside the Container one-by-one before deleting the Container itself. It doesn't end there, you can't even have nested Containers or "sub-folders", and you can't rename a file (you must copy it with a new name and delete the old one manually). It just sounds so incredibly more complicated then we thought it would be, and it certainly does not feel "intuitive" compared to local storage, so we don't know what to do. Please help.

  • SQL SERVER – How to Recover SQL Database Data Deleted by Accident

    - by Pinal Dave
In Repair a SQL Server database using a transaction log explorer, I showed how to use ApexSQL Log, a SQL Server transaction log viewer, to recover a SQL Server database after a disaster. In this blog, I’ll show you how to use another SQL Server disaster recovery tool from ApexSQL in a situation when data is accidentally deleted. You can download ApexSQL Recover here, install, and play along. With a good SQL Server disaster recovery strategy, data recovery is not a problem. You have a reliable full database backup with valid data, a full database backup and subsequent differential database backups, or a full database backup and a chain of transaction log backups. But not all situations are ideal. Here we’ll address some sub-optimal scenarios, where you can still successfully recover data. If you have only a full database backup This is the least optimal SQL Server disaster recovery strategy, as it doesn’t ensure minimal data loss. For example, data was deleted on Wednesday. Your last full database backup was created on Sunday, three days before the records were deleted. By using the full database backup created on Sunday, you will be able to recover SQL database records that existed in the table on Sunday. If there were any records inserted into the table on Monday or Tuesday, they will be lost forever. The same goes for records modified in this period. This method will not bring back modified records, only the old records that existed on Sunday. If you restore this full database backup, all your changes (intentional and accidental) will be lost and the database will be reverted to the state it had on Sunday. What you have to do is compare the records that were in the table on Sunday to the records on Wednesday, create a synchronization script, and execute it against the Wednesday database. If you have a full database backup followed by differential database backups Let’s say the situation is the same as in the example above, only you create a differential database backup every night. Use the full database backup created on Sunday, and the last differential database backup (created on Tuesday). In this scenario, you will lose only the data inserted and updated after the differential backup created on Tuesday. If you have a full database backup and a chain of transaction log backups This is the SQL Server disaster recovery strategy that provides minimal data loss. With a full chain of transaction logs, you can recover the SQL database to an exact point in time. To provide optimal results, you have to know exactly when the records were deleted, because restoring to a later point will not bring back the records. This method requires restoring the full database backup first. If you have any differential log backup created after the last full database backup, restore the most recent one. Then, restore transaction log backups, one by one, it the order they were created starting with the first created after the restored differential database backup. Now, the table will be in the state before the records were deleted. You have to identify the deleted records, script them and run the script against the original database. Although this method is reliable, it is time-consuming and requires a lot of space on disk. How to easily recover deleted records? The following solution enables you to recover SQL database records even if you have no full or differential database backups and no transaction log backups. To understand how ApexSQL Recover works, I’ll explain what happens when table data is deleted. Table data is stored in data pages. When you delete table records, they are not immediately deleted from the data pages, but marked to be overwritten by new records. Such records are not shown as existing anymore, but ApexSQL Recover can read them and create undo script for them. How long will deleted records stay in the MDF file? It depends on many factors, as time passes it’s less likely that the records will not be overwritten. The more transactions occur after the deletion, the more chances the records will be overwritten and permanently lost. Therefore, it’s recommended to create a copy of the database MDF and LDF files immediately (if you cannot take your database offline until the issue is solved) and run ApexSQL Recover on them. Note that a full database backup will not help here, as the records marked for overwriting are not included in the backup. First, I’ll delete some records from the Person.EmailAddress table in the AdventureWorks database.   I can delete these records in SQL Server Management Studio, or execute a script such as DELETE FROM Person.EmailAddress WHERE BusinessEntityID BETWEEN 70 AND 80 Then, I’ll start ApexSQL Recover and select From DELETE operation in the Recovery tab.   In the Select the database to recover step, first select the SQL Server instance. If it’s not shown in the drop-down list, click the Server icon right to the Server drop-down list and browse for the SQL Server instance, or type the instance name manually. Specify the authentication type and select the database in the Database drop-down list.   In the next step, you’re prompted to add additional data sources. As this can be a tricky step, especially for new users, ApexSQL Recover offers help via the Help me decide option.   The Help me decide option guides you through a series of questions about the database transaction log and advises what files to add. If you know that you have no transaction log backups or detached transaction logs, or the online transaction log file has been truncated after the data was deleted, select No additional transaction logs are available. If you know that you have transaction log backups that contain the delete transactions you want to recover, click Add transaction logs. The online transaction log is listed and selected automatically.   Click Add if to add transaction log backups. It would be best if you have a full transaction log chain, as explained above. The next step for this option is to specify the time range.   Selecting a small time range for the time of deletion will create the recovery script just for the accidentally deleted records. A wide time range might script the records deleted on purpose, and you don’t want that. If needed, you can check the script generated and manually remove such records. After that, for all data sources options, the next step is to select the tables. Be careful here, if you deleted some data from other tables on purpose, and don’t want to recover them, don’t select all tables, as ApexSQL Recover will create the INSERT script for them too.   The next step offers two options: to create a recovery script that will insert the deleted records back into the Person.EmailAddress table, or to create a new database, create the Person.EmailAddress table in it, and insert the deleted records. I’ll select the first one.   The recovery process is completed and 11 records are found and scripted, as expected.   To see the script, click View script. ApexSQL Recover has its own script editor, where you can review, modify, and execute the recovery script. The insert into statements look like: INSERT INTO Person.EmailAddress( BusinessEntityID, EmailAddressID, EmailAddress, rowguid, ModifiedDate) VALUES( 70, 70, N'[email protected]' COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS, 'd62c5b4e-c91f-403f-b630-7b7e0fda70ce', '20030109 00:00:00.000' ); To execute the script, click Execute in the menu.   If you want to check whether the records are really back, execute SELECT * FROM Person.EmailAddress WHERE BusinessEntityID BETWEEN 70 AND 80 As shown, ApexSQL Recover recovers SQL database data after accidental deletes even without the database backup that contains the deleted data and relevant transaction log backups. ApexSQL Recover reads the deleted data from the database data file, so this method can be used even for databases in the Simple recovery model. Besides recovering SQL database records from a DELETE statement, ApexSQL Recover can help when the records are lost due to a DROP TABLE, or TRUNCATE statement, as well as repair a corrupted MDF file that cannot be attached to as SQL Server instance. You can find more information about how to recover SQL database lost data and repair a SQL Server database on ApexSQL Solution center. There are solutions for various situations when data needs to be recovered. • Advantage Database Server: slow stored procedure performance.

    - by ie
I have a question about a performance of stored procedures in the ADS. I created a simple database with the following structure: CREATE TABLE MainTable ( Id INTEGER PRIMARY KEY, Name VARCHAR(50), Value INTEGER ); CREATE UNIQUE INDEX MainTableName_UIX ON MainTable ( Name ); CREATE TABLE SubTable ( Id INTEGER PRIMARY KEY, MainId INTEGER, Name VARCHAR(50), Value INTEGER ); CREATE INDEX SubTableMainId_UIX ON SubTable ( MainId ); CREATE UNIQUE INDEX SubTableName_UIX ON SubTable ( Name ); CREATE PROCEDURE CreateItems ( MainName VARCHAR ( 20 ), SubName VARCHAR ( 20 ), MainValue INTEGER, SubValue INTEGER, MainId INTEGER OUTPUT, SubId INTEGER OUTPUT ) BEGIN DECLARE @MainName VARCHAR ( 20 ); DECLARE @SubName VARCHAR ( 20 ); DECLARE @MainValue INTEGER; DECLARE @SubValue INTEGER; DECLARE @MainId INTEGER; DECLARE @SubId INTEGER; @MainName = (SELECT MainName FROM __input); @SubName = (SELECT SubName FROM __input); @MainValue = (SELECT MainValue FROM __input); @SubValue = (SELECT SubValue FROM __input); @MainId = (SELECT MAX(Id)+1 FROM MainTable); @SubId = (SELECT MAX(Id)+1 FROM SubTable ); INSERT INTO MainTable (Id, Name, Value) VALUES (@MainId, @MainName, @MainValue); INSERT INTO SubTable (Id, Name, MainId, Value) VALUES (@SubId, @SubName, @MainId, @SubValue); INSERT INTO __output SELECT @MainId, @SubId FROM system.iota; END; CREATE PROCEDURE UpdateItems ( MainName VARCHAR ( 20 ), MainValue INTEGER, SubValue INTEGER ) BEGIN DECLARE @MainName VARCHAR ( 20 ); DECLARE @MainValue INTEGER; DECLARE @SubValue INTEGER; DECLARE @MainId INTEGER; @MainName = (SELECT MainName FROM __input); @MainValue = (SELECT MainValue FROM __input); @SubValue = (SELECT SubValue FROM __input); @MainId = (SELECT TOP 1 Id FROM MainTable WHERE Name = @MainName); UPDATE MainTable SET Value = @MainValue WHERE Id = @MainId; UPDATE SubTable SET Value = @SubValue WHERE MainId = @MainId; END; CREATE PROCEDURE SelectItems ( MainName VARCHAR ( 20 ), CalculatedValue INTEGER OUTPUT ) BEGIN DECLARE @MainName VARCHAR ( 20 ); @MainName = (SELECT MainName FROM __input); INSERT INTO __output SELECT m.Value * s.Value FROM MainTable m INNER JOIN SubTable s ON m.Id = s.MainId WHERE m.Name = @MainName; END; CREATE PROCEDURE DeleteItems ( MainName VARCHAR ( 20 ) ) BEGIN DECLARE @MainName VARCHAR ( 20 ); DECLARE @MainId INTEGER; @MainName = (SELECT MainName FROM __input); @MainId = (SELECT TOP 1 Id FROM MainTable WHERE Name = @MainName); DELETE FROM SubTable WHERE MainId = @MainId; DELETE FROM MainTable WHERE Id = @MainId; END; Actually, the problem I had - even so light stored procedures work very-very slow (about 50-150 ms) relatively to plain queries (0-5ms). To test the performance, I created a simple test (in F# using ADS ADO.NET provider): open System; open System.Data; open System.Diagnostics; open Advantage.Data.Provider; let mainName = "main name #"; let subName = "sub name #"; // INSERT let cmdTextScriptInsert = " DECLARE @MainId INTEGER; DECLARE @SubId INTEGER; @MainId = (SELECT MAX(Id)+1 FROM MainTable); @SubId = (SELECT MAX(Id)+1 FROM SubTable ); INSERT INTO MainTable (Id, Name, Value) VALUES (@MainId, :MainName, :MainValue); INSERT INTO SubTable (Id, Name, MainId, Value) VALUES (@SubId, :SubName, @MainId, :SubValue); SELECT @MainId, @SubId FROM system.iota;"; let cmdTextProcedureInsert = "CreateItems"; // UPDATE let cmdTextScriptUpdate = " DECLARE @MainId INTEGER; @MainId = (SELECT TOP 1 Id FROM MainTable WHERE Name = :MainName); UPDATE MainTable SET Value = :MainValue WHERE Id = @MainId; UPDATE SubTable SET Value = :SubValue WHERE MainId = @MainId;"; let cmdTextProcedureUpdate = "UpdateItems"; // SELECT let cmdTextScriptSelect = " SELECT m.Value * s.Value FROM MainTable m INNER JOIN SubTable s ON m.Id = s.MainId WHERE m.Name = :MainName;"; let cmdTextProcedureSelect = "SelectItems"; // DELETE let cmdTextScriptDelete = " DECLARE @MainId INTEGER; @MainId = (SELECT TOP 1 Id FROM MainTable WHERE Name = :MainName); DELETE FROM SubTable WHERE MainId = @MainId; DELETE FROM MainTable WHERE Id = @MainId;"; let cmdTextProcedureDelete = "DeleteItems"; let cnnStr = @"data source=D:\DB\test.add; ServerType=local; user id=adssys; password=***;"; let cnn = new AdsConnection(cnnStr); try cnn.Open(); let cmd = cnn.CreateCommand(); let parametrize ix prms = cmd.Parameters.Clear(); let addParam = function | "MainName" -> cmd.Parameters.Add(":MainName" , mainName + ix.ToString()) |> ignore; | "SubName" -> cmd.Parameters.Add(":SubName" , subName + ix.ToString() ) |> ignore; | "MainValue" -> cmd.Parameters.Add(":MainValue", ix * 3 ) |> ignore; | "SubValue" -> cmd.Parameters.Add(":SubValue" , ix * 7 ) |> ignore; | _ -> () prms |> List.iter addParam; let runTest testData = let (cmdType, cmdName, cmdText, cmdParams) = testData; let toPrefix cmdType cmdName = let prefix = match cmdType with | CommandType.StoredProcedure -> "Procedure-" | CommandType.Text -> "Script -" | _ -> "Unknown -" in prefix + cmdName; let stopWatch = new Stopwatch(); let runStep ix prms = parametrize ix prms; stopWatch.Start(); cmd.ExecuteNonQuery() |> ignore; stopWatch.Stop(); cmd.CommandText <- cmdText; cmd.CommandType <- cmdType; let startId = 1500; let count = 10; for id in startId .. startId+count do runStep id cmdParams; let elapsed = stopWatch.Elapsed; Console.WriteLine("Test '{0}' - total: {1}; per call: {2}ms", toPrefix cmdType cmdName, elapsed, Convert.ToInt32(elapsed.TotalMilliseconds)/count); let lst = [ (CommandType.Text, "Insert", cmdTextScriptInsert, ["MainName"; "SubName"; "MainValue"; "SubValue"]); (CommandType.Text, "Update", cmdTextScriptUpdate, ["MainName"; "MainValue"; "SubValue"]); (CommandType.Text, "Select", cmdTextScriptSelect, ["MainName"]); (CommandType.Text, "Delete", cmdTextScriptDelete, ["MainName"]) (CommandType.StoredProcedure, "Insert", cmdTextProcedureInsert, ["MainName"; "SubName"; "MainValue"; "SubValue"]); (CommandType.StoredProcedure, "Update", cmdTextProcedureUpdate, ["MainName"; "MainValue"; "SubValue"]); (CommandType.StoredProcedure, "Select", cmdTextProcedureSelect, ["MainName"]); (CommandType.StoredProcedure, "Delete", cmdTextProcedureDelete, ["MainName"])]; lst |> List.iter runTest; finally cnn.Close(); And I'm getting the following results: Test 'Script -Insert' - total: 00:00:00.0292841; per call: 2ms Test 'Script -Update' - total: 00:00:00.0056296; per call: 0ms Test 'Script -Select' - total: 00:00:00.0051738; per call: 0ms Test 'Script -Delete' - total: 00:00:00.0059258; per call: 0ms Test 'Procedure-Insert' - total: 00:00:01.2567146; per call: 125ms Test 'Procedure-Update' - total: 00:00:00.7442440; per call: 74ms Test 'Procedure-Select' - total: 00:00:00.5120446; per call: 51ms Test 'Procedure-Delete' - total: 00:00:01.0619165; per call: 106ms The situation with the remote server is much better, but still a great gap between plaqin queries and stored procedures: Test 'Script -Insert' - total: 00:00:00.0709299; per call: 7ms Test 'Script -Update' - total: 00:00:00.0161777; per call: 1ms Test 'Script -Select' - total: 00:00:00.0258113; per call: 2ms Test 'Script -Delete' - total: 00:00:00.0166242; per call: 1ms Test 'Procedure-Insert' - total: 00:00:00.5116138; per call: 51ms Test 'Procedure-Update' - total: 00:00:00.3802251; per call: 38ms Test 'Procedure-Select' - total: 00:00:00.1241245; per call: 12ms Test 'Procedure-Delete' - total: 00:00:00.4336334; per call: 43ms Is it any chance to improve the SP performance? Please advice. ADO.NET driver version - 9.10.2.9 Server version - 9.10.0.9 (ANSI - GERMAN, OEM - GERMAN) Thanks!

  • Hi, I have a C hashing routine which is behaving strangely?

    - by aks
Hi, In this hashing routine: 1.) I am able to add strings. 2.) I am able to view my added strings. 3.) When i try to add a duplicate string, it throws me an error saying already present. 4.) But, when i try to delete the same string which is already present in hash table, then the lookup_routine calls hash function to get an index. At this time, it throws a different hash index to the one it was already added. Hence, my delete routine is failing? I am able to understand the reason why for same string, hash fucntion calculates a different index each time (whereas the same logic works in view hash table routine)? Can someone help me? This is the Output, i am getting: $ ./a Press 1 to add an element to the hashtable Press 2 to delete an element from the hashtable Press 3 to search the hashtable Press 4 to view the hashtable Press 5 to exit Please enter your choice: 1 Please enter the string :gaura enters in add_string DEBUG purpose in hash function: str passed = gaura Hashval returned in hash func= 1 hashval = 1 enters in lookup_string str in lookup_string = gaura DEBUG purpose in hash function: str passed = gaura Hashval returned in hash func= 1 hashval = 1 DEBUG ERROR :element not found in lookup string DEBUG Purpose NULL Inserting... • How to remove CRUD operations from Entity Class

    - by GlutVonSmark
Trying to get my head around removing dataStore access from my entity classes. Lets say I have an AccountsGroup entity class. I put the all DBAccess into AccountsGroupRepository class. Now should I have a DeleteFromDB method in the AccountsGroup class, that will call the repository? Public Sub DeleteFromDB dim repository as new AccountsGroupRepository(me) repository.DelteFromDB End Sub Or should I just always use repositry whenever I need to delete an entity, and not have the CRUD methods in the entity class? What happens when there is some business logic validation that needs to be done before the delete can proceed. For example if AccountsGroup still has some Accounts in it the delete method should throw an exception. Where do I put that?

  • How To Replace Notepad in Windows 7

    - by Trevor Bekolay
It used to be that Notepad was a necessary evil because it started up quickly and let us catch a quick glimpse of plain text files. Now, there are a bevy of capable Notepad replacements that are just as fast, but also have great feature sets. Before following the rest of this how-to, ensure that you’re logged into an account with Administrator access. Note: The following instructions involve modifying some Windows system folders. Don’t mess anything up while you’re in there! If you follow our instructions closely, you’ll be fine. Choose your replacement There are a ton of great Notepad replacements, including Notepad2, Metapad, and Notepad++. The best one for you will depend on what types of text files you open and what you do with them. We’re going to use Notepad++ in this how-to. The first step is to find the executable file that you’ll replace Notepad with. Usually this will be the only file with the .exe file extension in the folder where you installed your text editor. Copy the executable file to your desktop and try to open it, to make sure that it works when opened from a different folder. In the Notepad++ case, a special little .exe file is available for the explicit purpose of replacing Notepad. If we run it from the desktop, it opens up Notepad++ in all its glory. Back up Notepad You will probably never go back once you switch, but you never know. You can backup Notepad to a special location if you’d like, but we find it’s easiest to just keep a backed up copy of Notepad in the folders it was originally located. In Windows 7, Notepad resides in: C:\Windows C:\Windows\System32 C:\Windows\SysWOW64 in 64-bit versions only Navigate to each of those directories and copy Notepad. Paste it into the same folder. If prompted, choose to Copy, but keep both files. You can keep your backup as “notepad (2).exe”, but we prefer to rename it to “notepad.exe.bak”. Do this for all of the folders that have Notepad (2 total for 32-bit Windows 7, 3 total for 64-bit). Take control of Notepad and delete it Even if you’re on an administrator account, you can’t just delete Notepad – Microsoft has made some security gains in this respect. Fortunately for us, it’s still possible to take control of a file and delete it without resorting to nasty hacks like disabling UAC. Navigate to one of the directories that contain Notepad. Right-click on it and select Properties.   Switch to the Security tab, then click on the Advanced button. Note that the owner of the file is a user called “TrustedInstaller”. You can’t do much with files owned by TrustedInstaller, so let’s take control of it. Click the Edit… button. Select the desired owner (you could choose your own account, but we’re going to give any Administrator control) and click OK. You’ll get a message that you need to close and reopen the Properties windows to edit permissions. Before doing that, confirm that the owner has changed to what you selected. Click OK, then OK again to close the Properties window. Right-click on Notepad and click on Properties again. Switch to the Security tab. Click on Edit…. Select the appropriate group or user name in the list at the top, then add a checkmark in the checkbox beside Full control in the Allow column. Click OK, then Yes to the dialog box that pops up. Click OK again to close the Properties window. Now you can delete Notepad, by either selecting it and pressing Delete on the keyboard, or right-click on it and click Delete.   You’re now free from Notepad’s foul clutches! Repeat this procedure for the remaining folders (or folder, on 32-bit Windows 7). Drop in your replacement Copy your Notepad replacement’s executable, which should still be on your desktop. Browse to the two or three folders listed above and copy your .exe to those locations. If prompted for Administrator permission, click Continue. If your executable file was named something other than “notepad.exe”, rename it to “notepad.exe”. Don’t be alarmed if the thumbnail still shows the old Notepad icon. Double click on Notepad and your replacement should open. To make doubly sure that it works, press Win+R to bring up the Run dialog box and enter “notepad” into the text field. Press enter or click OK. Now you can allow Windows to open files with Notepad by default with little to no shame! All without restarting or having to disable UAC! • Clean up after Visual Studio

    - by psheriff
As programmer’s we know that if we create a temporary file during the running of our application we need to make sure it is removed when the application or process is complete. We do this, but why can’t Microsoft do it? Visual Studio leaves tons of temporary files all over your hard drive. This is why, over time, your computer loses hard disk space. This blog post will show you some of the most common places where these files are left and which ones you can safely delete..NET Left OversVisual Studio is a great development environment for creating applications quickly. However, it will leave a lot of miscellaneous files all over your hard drive. There are a few locations on your hard drive that you should be checking to see if there are left-over folders or files that you can delete. I have attempted to gather as much data as I can about the various versions of .NET and operating systems. Of course, your mileage may vary on the folders and files I list here. In fact, this problem is so prevalent that PDSA has created a Computer Cleaner specifically for the Visual Studio developer.  Instructions for downloading our PDSA Developer Utilities (of which Computer Cleaner is one) are at the end of this blog entry. Each version of Visual Studio will create “temporary” files in different folders. The problem is that the files created are not always “temporary”. Most of the time these files do not get cleaned up like they should. Let’s look at some of the folders that you should periodically review and delete files within these folders.Temporary ASP.NET FilesAs you create and run ASP.NET applications from Visual Studio temporary files are placed into the <sysdrive>:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework[64]\<vernum>\Temporary ASP.NET Files folder. The folders and files under this folder can be removed with no harm to your development computer. Do not remove the "Temporary ASP.NET Files" folder itself, just the folders underneath this folder. If you use IIS for ASP.NET development, you may need to run the iisreset.exe utility from the command prompt prior to deleting any files/folder under this folder. IIS will sometimes keep files in use in this folder and iisreset will release the locks so the files/folders can be deleted.Website CacheThis folder is similar to the ASP.NET Temporary Files folder in that it contains files from ASP.NET applications run from Visual Studio. This folder is located in each users local settings folder. The location will be a little different on each operating system. For example on Windows Vista/Windows 7, the folder is located at <sysdrive>:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\WebsiteCache. If you are running Windows XP this folder is located at <sysdrive>:\ Documents and Settings\<UserName>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\WebsiteCache. Check these locations periodically and delete all files and folders under this directory.Visual Studio BackupThis backup folder is used by Visual Studio to store temporary files while you develop in Visual Studio. This folder never gets cleaned out, so you should periodically delete all files and folders under this directory. On Windows XP, this folder is located at <sysdrive>:\Documents and Settings\<UserName>\My Documents\Visual Studio 200[5|8]\Backup Files. On Windows Vista/Windows 7 this folder is located at <sysdrive>:\Users\<UserName>\Documents\Visual Studio 200[5|8]\.Assembly CacheNo, this is not the global assembly cache (GAC). It appears that this cache is only created when doing WPF or Silverlight development with Visual Studio 2008 or Visual Studio 2010. This folder is located in <sysdrive>:\ Users\<UserName>\AppData\Local\assembly\dl3 on Windows Vista/Windows 7. On Windows XP this folder is located at <sysdrive>:\ Documents and Settings\<UserName>\Local Settings\Application Data\assembly. If you have not done any WPF or Silverlight development, you may not find this particular folder on your machine.Project AssembliesThis is yet another folder where Visual Studio stores temporary files. You will find a folder for each project you have opened and worked on. This folder is located at <sysdrive>:\Documents and Settings\<UserName>Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Visual Studio\[8|9].0\ProjectAssemblies on Windows XP. On Microsoft Vista/Windows 7 you will find this folder at <sysdrive>:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Visual Studio\[8|9].0\ProjectAssemblies.Remember not all of these folders will appear on your particular machine. Which ones do show up will depend on what version of Visual Studio you are using, whether or not you are doing desktop or web development, and the operating system you are using.SummaryTaking the time to periodically clean up after Visual Studio will aid in keeping your computer running quickly and increase the space on your hard drive. Another place to make sure you are cleaning up is your TEMP folder. Check your OS settings for the location of your particular TEMP folder and be sure to delete any files in here that are not in use. I routinely clean up the files and folders described in this blog post and I find that I actually eliminate errors in Visual Studio and I increase my hard disk space.NEW! PDSA has just published a “pre-release” of our PDSA Developer Utilities at http://www.pdsa.com/DeveloperUtilities that contains a Computer Cleaner utility which will clean up the above-mentioned folders, as well as a lot of other miscellaneous folders that get Visual Studio build-up. You can download a free trial at http://www.pdsa.com/DeveloperUtilities. If you wish to purchase our utilities through the month of November, 2011 you can use the RSVP code: DUNOV11 to get them for only $39. • Entity Framework Batch Update and Future Queries

    - by pwelter34
    Entity Framework Extended Library A library the extends the functionality of Entity Framework. Features Batch Update and Delete Future Queries Audit Log Project Package and Source NuGet Package PM> Install-Package EntityFramework.Extended NuGet: http://nuget.org/List/Packages/EntityFramework.Extended Source: http://github.com/loresoft/EntityFramework.Extended Batch Update and Delete A current limitations of the Entity Framework is that in order to update or delete an entity you have to first retrieve it into memory. Now in most scenarios this is just fine. There are however some senerios where performance would suffer. Also, for single deletes, the object must be retrieved before it can be deleted requiring two calls to the database. Batch update and delete eliminates the need to retrieve and load an entity before modifying it. Deleting //delete all users where FirstName matches context.Users.Delete(u => u.FirstName == "firstname"); Update //update all tasks with status of 1 to status of 2 context.Tasks.Update( t => t.StatusId == 1, t => new Task {StatusId = 2}); //example of using an IQueryable as the filter for the update var users = context.Users .Where(u => u.FirstName == "firstname"); context.Users.Update( users, u => new User {FirstName = "newfirstname"}); Future Queries Build up a list of queries for the data that you need and the first time any of the results are accessed, all the data will retrieved in one round trip to the database server. Reducing the number of trips to the database is a great. Using this feature is as simple as appending .Future() to the end of your queries. To use the Future Queries, make sure to import the EntityFramework.Extensions namespace. Future queries are created with the following extension methods... Future() FutureFirstOrDefault() FutureCount() Sample // build up queries var q1 = db.Users .Where(t => t.EmailAddress == "[email protected]") .Future(); var q2 = db.Tasks .Where(t => t.Summary == "Test") .Future(); // this triggers the loading of all the future queries var users = q1.ToList(); In the example above, there are 2 queries built up, as soon as one of the queries is enumerated, it triggers the batch load of both queries. // base query var q = db.Tasks.Where(t => t.Priority == 2); // get total count var q1 = q.FutureCount(); // get page var q2 = q.Skip(pageIndex).Take(pageSize).Future(); // triggers execute as a batch int total = q1.Value; var tasks = q2.ToList(); In this example, we have a common senerio where you want to page a list of tasks. In order for the GUI to setup the paging control, you need a total count. With Future, we can batch together the queries to get all the data in one database call. Future queries work by creating the appropriate IFutureQuery object that keeps the IQuerable. The IFutureQuery object is then stored in IFutureContext.FutureQueries list. Then, when one of the IFutureQuery objects is enumerated, it calls back to IFutureContext.ExecuteFutureQueries() via the LoadAction delegate. ExecuteFutureQueries builds a batch query from all the stored IFutureQuery objects. Finally, all the IFutureQuery objects are updated with the results from the query. Audit Log The Audit Log feature will capture the changes to entities anytime they are submitted to the database. The Audit Log captures only the entities that are changed and only the properties on those entities that were changed. The before and after values are recorded. AuditLogger.LastAudit is where this information is held and there is a ToXml() method that makes it easy to turn the AuditLog into xml for easy storage. The AuditLog can be customized via attributes on the entities or via a Fluent Configuration API. Fluent Configuration // config audit when your application is starting up... var auditConfiguration = AuditConfiguration.Default; auditConfiguration.IncludeRelationships = true; auditConfiguration.LoadRelationships = true; auditConfiguration.DefaultAuditable = true; // customize the audit for Task entity auditConfiguration.IsAuditable<Task>() .NotAudited(t => t.TaskExtended) .FormatWith(t => t.Status, v => FormatStatus(v)); // set the display member when status is a foreign key auditConfiguration.IsAuditable<Status>() .DisplayMember(t => t.Name); Create an Audit Log var db = new TrackerContext(); var audit = db.BeginAudit(); // make some updates ... db.SaveChanges(); var log = audit.LastLog;

  • Can not remove cube in UDK

    - by user32228
For some reason, I can't move or remove an 'invisible' cube which is on my map. I searched on Google to find a solution but somehow I still can't remove it. The cube looks like this: http://screencloud.net/v/uNyz In Brush Wireframe: http://screencloud.net/v/3C0c In Wireframe: screencloud.net/v/oGBj As you can see, I want to delete the brown cube. Selecting it and pressing the DEL button won't do anything. So, how do you delete the brown cube? EDIT: Seriously, I wrote this post a few minutes ago and I found the solution. However, I still don't know how to delete the brown cube.
