• Force running a program as non-administrator in Vista

  I've just installed, on Vista 32-bit, a program which in my opinion shouldn't require administrator rights. It's not installed in a system directory, and its purpose shouldn't obviously require any special privileges. However, the .exe has a UAC shield on it, and it asks me to elevate privileges immediately upon execution. I'm prepared to risk it doing nasty things with the privileges of my user account, but not prepared to risk elevating it. Is there anything I can do short of setting up a virtual machine for it (or downloading the source and compiling it myself)? (FWIW, the program in question is Pencil - pencil.evolus.vn/en-US/Downloads/Application.aspx - but I'm more interested in general answers than app-specific ones).

• How do UEFI and virtual machines relate to each other?

  I am trying to get my head around UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) and it's not entirely clear to me how this affects virtual machines. Thus, there are three parts to this question: Is UEFI an advance in hardware support for virtualization? All other things being equal, would a machine with UEFI be more likely to run a virtual machine more efficiently than one without, or does UEFI cause any performance hits that negate any speed improvements from a virtual machine? Would the difference in execution be visible to code running in a virtual machine? (In theory, it shouldn't, but in practice?)

• Installing a new SQL Server instance fails

  I've previously in my setup installed SQL Server Express 2005. Now I've switched to SQL Server Express 2008. I updated the command line parameters to those documented for the latter. If the comp already has SQL Server Express 2008 installed, my installer should create a new instance. The command line parameters are as follows: /ACTION=Install /FEATURES=SQLEngine /QS /INSTANCENAME=ABCD /SECURITYMODE=SQL /SAPWD=CunningPassword The requested instance name does not exist on the target machine. This will end in an error -2068643838. The logs show the following error: "No features were installed during the setup execution. The requested features may already be installed." If I remove the /QS parameter and try to install interactively, I'll get as far as the Feature Selection page. The UI shows three options, Instance Features, Shared Features and Redistributable Features. Whatever I select, clicking Next results in the same error (There are validation errors on this page). Any ideas anyone?

• Hyperic HQ metrics not working

  I am having a problem with Hyperic HQ. Several metrics, some in IIS 6.x (Request Execution Time, Request Wait Time) and some in .NET 2.0 (Bytes in all Heaps, Exceptions Thrown per Minute), always show 0. If I view perfmon on the server itself I can see that the counters have values greater than zero. There are some metrics that work fine, such as Total Get Requests per Minute and the other IIS defaults. I have looked in the server logs but nothing obvious shows up. Please advise. Am happy to find more information if required.

• maven test cannot load cross-module resources/properties ?

  I have a maven mantained project with some modules . One module contains one XML file and one parsing class. Second module depends on the first module. There is a class that calls the parsing class in the first module , but maven seems cannot test the class in the second module. Maven test reports : java.lang.NullPointerException at java.util.Properties.loadFromXML(Properties.java:851) at foo.firstModule.Parser.<init>(Parser.java:92) at foo.secondModule.Program.<init>(Program.java:84) In "Parser.java" (in the first module) , it uses Properties and InputStream to read/parse an XML file : InputStream xmlStream = getClass().getResourceAsStream("Data.xml"); Properties properties = new Properties(); properties.loadFromXML(xmlStream); The "data.xml" is located in first module's resources/foo/firstModule directory , and it tests OK in the first module. It seems when testing the second module , maven cannot correctly load the Data.xml in the first module . I thought I can solve the problem by using maven-dependency-plugin:unpack to solve it . In the second module's POM file , I add these snippets : <plugin> <groupId>org.apache.maven.plugins</groupId> <artifactId>maven-dependency-plugin</artifactId> <version>2.1</version> <executions> <execution> <id>data-copying</id> <phase>test-compile</phase> <goals> <goal>unpack</goal> </goals> <configuration> <artifactItems> <artifactItem> <groupId>foo</groupId> <artifactId>firstModule</artifactId> <type>jar</type> <includes>foo/firstModule/Data.xml</includes> <outputDirectory>${project.build.directory}/classes</outputDirectory> </artifactItem> </artifactItems> </configuration> </execution> </executions> </plugin> In this POM file , I try to unpack the first module , and copy the Data.xml to classes/foo/firstModule/ directory , and then run tests. And indeed , it is copied to the right directory , I can find the "Data.xml" file in "target/classes/foo/firstModule" directory. But maven test still complains it cannot read the File (Properties.loadFromXML() throws NPE). I don't know how to solve this problem. I tried other output directory , such as ${project.build.directory}/resources , and ${project.build.directory}/test-classes , but all in vain... Any advices now ? Thanks in advanced.   We have a Windows server 2008 R2. It has 24GB RAM and 2.926 Mhz, 8 Core(s), 8 Logical Process. We have a large MySQL database and it's taking a lot of time to execute some queries. But while running queries, I have observed it's NOT utilizing full resources. I am thinking that if I let MySQL utilize maximum resources on my server, it can reduce execution time. How can I let my MySQL server utilize maximum resources in a healthy way?

• Web application design with distributed servers

  I want to build a web application/server with this structure: main-server sub-server transaction-server (create, update, delete) view-server (view, search) authentication-server documents-server reporting-server library-server e-learning-server The main-server acts as host server for sub-server. I can add many sub-servers and connect it to main-server (via plug-play interface maybe), then it can begin querying data from another sub-servers (which has been connected to the main-server). The sub-servers can be anywhere as long as connected to internet. The main-server can manage all sub-servers which are connected to it (query data, setting permission between sub-servers, etc). The purpose is simple, the web application will be huge as the company grows, so I want to distribute it into small connected plug-able servers. My question is, does the structure above already have a standardized method? or are there any different views? what are the technologies needed? I need a lot of researches before the execution plan begin. thanks a lot.

• Running Android emulator inside a Virtualbox Vm

  I'm trying to setup a VM with a complete android development stack (SDK, Platforms, Eclipse etc) for a Hackathon. I'm having real trouble getting the emulator to start in the VM. I realize that the emulator is essentially a VM itself inside the Vbox VM and so is going to be slow, but it just hangs at the Android splash screen and never gets any further. Might there be something going on with the VM that is causing it to run so very slowly? Is there anything I can do to give the VM more CPU? I've tried setting the execution cap to 100% but it didn't help any. Anyone know what might be going on here, or have any ideas about how I might speed it up? Thanks Steve.

• Tools for analyzing performance of SQL Server/Express?

  The application that I have customized and continue to support for my client is seeing dramatic performance problems in the field. Simple queries on rather small datasets take over a minute when I would expect them to complete with sub-second times. My current theory is that SQL Server Express 2005 is too limited for the rather non-trivial demands being made of it, but I am not sure how to get about gathering data that I can use to either prove my point or allow me to move on to finding another cause. Can anyone point me toward some tools that would allow me to analyze the load on this database? Information such as simultaneous connections, execution times of individual queries, memory usage, heck just any profiling data at all would be a help. Many thanks.

  Clarification: I want __foo to be executed each time the PS1 string is presented in the terminal, not when the PS1 string is constructed (hence its being in quotes). __foo contains logic that examines the current directory, so its execution must be deferred. I'm trying to use different colours in my Bash PS1 string from within a Bash function: LIGHTRED="\033[1;31m" LIGHTGREEN="\033[1;32m" RESET="\033[m" __foo () { # Do some stuff and genereate a string to echo in different colours: echo -n '\['$1'\]firstcolour \['$2'\]secondcolour' } PS1='$(__foo '$LIGHTRED' '$LIGHTGREEN')\['$RESET'\] \$' Essentially I want __foo to generate part of the PS1 in a bunch of different colours. My attempt doesn't seem to work, though; it produces the following output: -bash: 31m: command not found -bash: 32m: command not found \[]firstcolour \[\]secondcolour $ What gives, and how can I fix it?

• Why does PsExec hang after successfully running a powershell script?

  The script is fairly straight forward. Simply tries to start a bunch of windows services. Execution locally works fine when on the target machine. The script is actually executing fine as well when done via PsExec, it just never returns until I hit the "enter" key on my CMD prompt. This is a problem, because this is being called from TeamCity, and it makes the Agent hang waiting for PsExec to return. I've tried the following: Adding an exit and exit 0 at the end of the Powershell script Adding a < NUL to the end of the PsExec call, per the answer in this SF question Adding a > stdout redirect This is how I am actually calling psexec: psexec \\target -u domain\username -p password powershell c:\path\script.ps1 No matter what I do, it hangs until I the locally on the cmd prompt. After I hit enter, I get the message: powershell exited on target with error code 0.

  I have some computers I'm trying to remotely execute powershell commands but I'm running into some snags. For one thing, the computers do not have Enable-PSRemoting enabled so I am unable to simply Enter-PSSession. I tried to run a powershell script through psexec but I have yet to Set-Execution Policy on the machine. My thoughts were to execute a powershell logon script that accomplished this but before I tried this I was going to see if there were any other methods to enable-psremoting on a machine. I set up a task and "Last Run Result" says "%1 is not a valid Win32 application" The event properties describe more failure: "Task Scheduler failed to launch action "D:\InetPub\tools\something\build.php" in instance "{88cc01f4-9554-4b8f-9836-34d806337d7f}" of task "\Something". Additional Data: Error Value: 2147942593." Task Category: Action failed to start Is it possible to run scripts using the task scheduler? If not, how should I go about automating the execution of a php script? Thanks

  crontab(5) defines the following fields: field allowed values ----- -------------- minute 0-59 hour 0-23 day of month 1-31 month 1-12 (or names, see below) day of week 0-7 (0 or 7 is Sun, or use names) and explains: Step values can be used in conjunction with ranges. Following a range with ``/<number>'' specifies skips of the number's value through the range. For example, ``0-23/2'' can be used in the hours field to specify command execution every other hour (the alternative in the V7 standard is ``0,2,4,6,8,10,12,14,16,18,20,22''). So, no biweekly Jobs, as far as my understanding goes. I'm quite sure there are workarounds, what are yours? Or did I miss something?

  Hi everyone I've got a cronjob that runs every minute and checks existence of a certain file. If there's no such file, job silently ends. If there is a file, then another script is started. That script removes the file when done. Its execution time can take up to 20 minutes. My questions are: Are there any flaws in this scheme? Is it ok to store such file in tmp? Can I be shure that nothing will attempt to remove it?

• Imagemagick apparently correctly configured, still won't work under IIS 7.5 + PHP 5.3.2

  I have managed to get imagemagick working (tested using the command line example on their website) It also appears that the php extension is correctly installed: I can see it listed in my phpinfo(); list. However, when I try to run the following code: $im = new imagick( 'examples.jpg' ); $im->thumbnailImage( 200, 0); $im->writeImage( 'a_thumbnail.jpg' ); The execution stops at the second line, because it cannot find the thumbnailImage method. What I can think of is that some user doesn't have enough privileges to access/run something else, but I obviously cannot give user access to everything. Another possibility is that the PHP extension I'm using is not the suitable one for the latest imagemagick distribution.

  One of our companies uses Postini services as our spam filtering service. Unfortunately, the company has been tagged as a spammer and we're trying to use emailreg.org to whitelist us. Emailreg.org wants us to add a CNAME which points to their domain (emaireg.org), while Postini has us add MX records (such as domainname.s7a1.psmtp.com. Here are my questions: 1. Can adding Emaireg's CNAME cause either Postini to not work or our emails to be lost? 2. Which is order of execution (do the email go to Postini and upon their return to EmailReg or is it the other way around)? 3. Is there anything of which I should be aware when using such a setup? • How to run a script in Ubuntu via SSH as superuser?

  So I have a script that needs to be executed remotely as root. This isn't a problem with most Linux distros since they have a root account. But since Ubuntu does not, executing anything as root requires a 2-step process of entering the account password twice - once to log in and once for sudo. The SSH process to launch the script is automated, so it cannot pause for user input for the second password request. Does anyone know, short of hacking Ubuntu to re-enable root (not an option), if unattended SSH script execution with superuser privilege on the target machine is possible? Also, having no experience with Debian, does Debian behave this way too?

• Query Performance Degrades with High Number of Logical Reads

  I'm using Confio Ignite8 to derive this information, and monitor waits. I have one query that runs frequently, and I notice that on some days there is an extremely high number of logical reads incurred, +300,000,000 for 91,000 executions. On a good day, the logical reads are much lower, 18,000,000 for 94,000 executions. The execution plan for the query utilizes clustered index seeks, and is below.   I have a batch file that creates a scheduled task using schtasks like this: schtasks /create /tn my_task_name /tr "...\my_path\my_task.bat" /sc daily /st 10:00:00 /s \\my_computer_name /u my_username /p my_password It works OK except the fact that when my_task.bat is executed - a new command line window is opened (and closed after execution). I would like to avoid opening this new window (i.e. to run the task in quiet mode, in the background). I thought to use start /b ...\my_path\my_task.bat but I don't know how, because since I have to call start from the batch file I need to precede it with cmd /c, which again causes the new window to open. How could I solve this problem ?

• How does the "Last Result" column of Scheduled Tasks in Windows Server 2003 get set from a process or script?

  The Last Result column of the Scheduled Tasks Window on Windows Server 2003, displays the result of the execution of the .exe, .vbs, .ps1, .bat, .cmd, etc... that has been run at the scheduled time. There is also an archived history of this value that appears in the Scheduled Tasks Log (Found on the Scheduled Tasks Window under the Advanced->View Log) Now my question is, if I'm running a scheduled task that is a .exe, .vbs, .ps1, .bat, .cmd, etc... how do I use that process to return a specific Last Result when the process ends? P.S. If you think this question should be split up into smaller parts since I'm painting pretty broadly with it, just let me know and I'll split it into subsequent smaller questions
