  • What's a Java alternative to Google App Engine for developing iPhone Push Notification services?

    I'm a Java programmer who is working on an iPhone application. I'd like it to use Push Notification services. I originally thought I could use Google App Engine to provide the payloads to Apple, but I see now that it won't be possible because App Engine doesn't support the low-level socket programming that is needed to communicate with Apple. Are there any alternatives to Google App Engine that let me use Java? In brief, I'm wondering if there is a free hosting platform that supports Java and Socket Programming

    I think the question is clear enough, but I'd like to clarify it because it's subjective at some point and I don't want it closed. I want to see some short jQuery examples with awesome results (either from the user or from the programmer perspective), that would not be that easy using straight javascript without any library. I find this question useful to be aware how using jQuery simplifies your js code.

  • Trying to write a loop that uses an OutputStream to write to a text file.

    I'm not a java programmer, I'm a VB programmer. I am doing this as part of an assignment, however, I'm not asking for help on something assignment related. I'd like to figure out how to get the OutputStreamWriter to work properly in this instance. I just want to capture the values I'm generating and place them into a text document. The file is generated, but only one entry exists, not the 40 I'm expecting. I could do this in a heartbeat with VB, but java feels very strange to me right now. Your help is appreciated.     There are a lot of great programming quotes out there. Which do you like? Today (Sept 12, 2008) I heard a new one from a friend, Lars-Gunnar, he said "Gud finns i Emacs" (in Swedish). This basically means "God is in Emacs". Still laughing about it here :) What he meant was that a function "gud is grand-unified-debugger" is in Emacs.     I guess this question will sound familiar, but I am yet another programmer baffled by REST. I have a traditional web application which goes from StateA to StateB and so on If the user goes to (url of) StateB, I want to make sure that he has visited StateA before. Traditionally, I'd do this using session state. Since session state is not allowed in REST, how do I achieve this?

  • Can I access the Cocoa Accessibility API from with Java on OSX?

    I need to write an app which can observe and manipulate the positions of windows on screen, and I've been told that this requires using Cocoa's Accessibility API. Unfortunately I'm a Java programmer, and Objective C scares me ;) Is it possible to access this Cocoa API from within Java? I know that back when Apple cared about Java it maintained a "bridge" to cocoa, but I'm not sure if this does what I need. Oh, and my IDE is Eclipse, in case that is relevant.

  • Ruby: Is there a way to split a string only with the first x occurrencies?

    For example, suppose I have this: 001, "john doe", "male", 37, "programmer", "likes dogs, women, and is lazy" The problem is that the line is only supposed to have 6 fields. But if I separate it with split I get more, due to the comma being used improperly to separate the fields. Right now I'm splitting everything, then when I get to the 5-th index onward I concatenate all the strings. But I was wondering if there was a split(",",6) or something along these lines.

    I'm mainly a Python programmer, and it is often described as being "executable pseudo-code". I have used a little bit of AppleScript, which seems to be the most English-like programming language I have ever seen, because almost operators can be words, and it lets you use "the" anywhere (for example, this stupid example I just came up with: firstnumber = 1 secondnumber = 2 if the firstnumber is equal to the secondnumber then set the sum to 5 end if is a valid AppleScript program. Are there any programming languages that are even more English-like than these?

  • Simple popup java form with at least two fields
