• How would I go about building a calendar UI control for the iPhone/iPad?

  Hello. There are a few different 3rd party code frameworks that include calendar controls, but most of them have a lot of functionality I don't need, plus most of them lack sufficient documentation on how to use them and I'm not a proficient enough iPhone developer figure it out using just the code. So I'm going to attempt to build my own and I was hoping you could provide me with some high-level direction to get started. At a high level, how could I build a simple, calendar control that doesn't do much more than display a calendar (month view, with the current date highlighted) and allows the user to selected a date? Something that looks like the calendar in the upper right corner of this image... Thanks so much in advance for your help!

• Scala simple dummy project.

  Currently my whole work cycle is: edit foo.scala fsc foo.scala && scala -cp . FooMain But my project is getting bigger and I would like to split files, make unit tests, etc. But I'm too lazy for reading sbt documentation and doing whatever needs to be done to get a sbt's "Makefile". Similarly for unit tests (there are so many frameworks, which to choose?) What would make my day is a simple zipped dummy project with a dummy unit tests using sbt. Do you know whether such thing exists?

• Visual Editor vs Manual code

  I'm not sure how it is using other frameworks but this questions is strictly regarding Java swing. Is it better to use a Visual Editor to place objects or to manually code the placement of the objects onto the frame (Layout managers or null layouts)? From my experience I've had a lot of trouble using Visual editors when it comes to different screen resolutions or changing the window size. Using manual code to place objects I've found that my GUIs behave a lot better with regard to the screen size issue. However when I want to change a small part of my GUI it takes a lot more work compared to using a visual editor Just wondering what people's thoughts were on this?

• Integrating JSF with Spring

  I haven't implemented any code, I'm still working the overall architecture for a new application and this going to be the first time I use JSF+Spring. I need to put web services in front of the Spring service beans (business logic tier) since these beans could be accessed by other applications besides the presentation tier. While defining the different layers or tiers for the application, I feel unsure about how to integrate JSF (the presentation tier) with Spring (the business tier in this application). I'm considering to define some sort of common tier or service tier in order to provide the glue code for JSF and Spring, but before that I want to hear from others what have they done or if they have used other frameworks to help with the glue code for this scenario (I already checked Spring MVC/Spring Faces, but I'm not sure if that's what I need since I'm thinking of this application more like JSF-centric than Spring-centric, but maybe you could help me about considering another approach). • Maven2 compiles my tests, but doesn't run them

• Best build dir location to use in Xcode

  I'm consolidating my Xcode/TextMate setup and is interested in where you put your build dir. Some years ago I started out having the build dir in the same dir as my xcodeproj file. However it became a mess when my project became a multi project with a applications and frameworks and tests, so I started using ../build as the build dir, so that all the sub projects used the same dir. However Spotlight is indexing this build dir and TextMate's global find is unusable when there is a build dir in the project. I'm thinking either using ~/.build or /build as Xcode's build dir. What build dir do you use and why?

  I'm unsatisfied with other JavaScript libraries and frameworks like jQuery, MooTools, and Raphael, because of their inability to support SVG grouping. You'd think it'd be a very simple thing for them to implement.   i will have the following set up: people will be sending text messages to a server, and that server will be forwarding the messages to other phone numbers i am not sure what kind of framework i should use. should i develop an SMS gateway and use AT commands? should i just try to somehow use AIM or GCHAT to capture and send SMS messages? would there be a different more suitable configuration? are there already developed frameworks that are free which i can use? for example i know that i can send an SMS to almost anyone through gchat or aim by sending a message to "+" and the number of the person. is this scalable and can i use it for my own benefit? any sms developers out there?

  I'm thinking about using semantic (web) technogies like RDF and OWL in an application on mobile devices. Currently I'm targeting android, but I'd also be interested in the possibilities on the iPhone and on J2ME. I would like to use a lib instead of implementing everything from scratch. I know that there are some libraries and frameworks like Jena, Redland, Protégé but they don't state on which platforms they are known to work. Having a dynamic object model and parsing from and to XML are must-haves for me. I'd also like to use reasoning, but I've been told it was rather computing-intensive, so that's only a nice-to-have. For all platforms mentioned, the question can be interpreted as Is it possible in theory (especially for J2ME I'm not sure) Are there libs that are known to work on those platforms? Is the performance on a mobile platform good enough for real world usage?

  I am trying to implement JUnit tests for a class that performs DB queries using Hibernate. When I create the class under test, I get access to the session through the factory by doing the following: InitialContext context = new InitialContext(); sessionFactory = (SessionFactory) context.lookup(hibernateContext); This works fine when I deploy this to JBoss 5.1. I am trying to figure out how to get this to work with my JUnit test. I keep getting an exception stating that I "Need to specify class name in environment or system property, or as an applet parameter, or in an application resource file: java.naming.factory.initial". I've searched high and low but haven't been able to find any information about what specifically I need to do to get this to work. I am not using Spring or any frameworks, just plain old Java and JUnit.

• Sharing Jinja2 templates between Pylons and Django applications

  I'm writing a couple of Jinja2 templates that basically implement some common grid layouts. I'd like to be able to share this 'library' of templates between a Pylons app and Django app. I've hit a minor stumbling block in that Django's template context is accessible from the "top-level" of the template, whereas Pylons wraps your context inside the thread local c (or tmpl_context) variable. Here are some analogous examples that demonstrate this. Django from django.shortcuts import render_to_response ctx = {} ctx['name'] = 'John' return render_to_response('hello.html', ctx) hello.html: Hello {{ name }} Pylons from pylons import tmpl_context as c from myapp.lib.base import render c.name = 'John' return render('hello.html') hello.html: Hello {{ c.name }} What I'm trying to do is make it so that hello.html is the same across both frameworks. • ORM framework that extends base class with database-implementation.

  I have a game consisting of a client / server + a webpage. A central notion in both client and game-/webserver is an Account. Accounts are stored in a database thus I'm in need of some ORM and recently had a look at Hibernate and Cayenne. My understanding however, is that both frameworks provide an "DatabaseBackedAccount"-class which I extend with my other Account methods. My problem is that the Account class is reused heavily on the client side, and I would obviously not want to include database-related code on the client implementation. My current solution is to have an Account class (shared by server and client) and extend this with a DatabaseBackedAccount (overriding setter-methods and providing a commit method) on the server side. I find this quite natural and nice, however I've had to implement all gory sql-details and ORM myself. Is there any way to "turn the table" in any existing ORM framework, so that the generated classes extend my existing class?

• Is being a programmer a younger person's job?

  After you get old, say past 30 or 40. Can you still keep up with the young coders from your company, those fresh out of school, who can code for 15+ hours on 10 cans of redbulls (most people in Google, Facebook, etc) ? And given the lightning speed with which today's programming frameworks and architectures evolve, can you keep up with the most up to date stuff and be as proficient at them as the next college grad? I know for jobs like unix/c/embedded programming, it might be that the older the better. But for programming jobs in say web development, social media, search engine technology, etc. Do you become less and less competitive career-wise versus youngsters? For example, most coders in Google and Facebook, I believe are under 25 years old. In other words, once you reach a certain age, would it be unwise to continue to be a coder, and is it better to try becoming a project manager or architect?

• Is the UIDatePicker really the best iPhone UI mechanism for selecting dates?

  Hello! I'm diving into iPhone/iPad development and I'm trying to find an elegant mechanism for allowing the user to select dates. It seems to me that a calendar control would be the best way to go, but I don't see one in anywhere in the SDK. All all I see is this overblown, the-price-is-right-looking DatePicker control. Is this the only control that comes with UIKit for allowing the user to select dates? What about the calendar that the Notes app uses? Also, I should note I'm really trying to avoid using 3rd party code frameworks that have little or no documentation, because I'm new to all this and sufficient documentation is a must at this point. • Will there be IQueryable-like additions to IObservable? (.NET Rx)

  The new IObservable/IObserver frameworks in the System.Reactive library coming in .NET 4.0 are very exciting (see this and this link). It may be too early to speculate, but will there also be a (for lack of a better term) IQueryable-like framework built for these new interfaces as well? One particular use case would be to assist in pre-processing events at the source, rather than in the chain of the receiving calls. For example, if you have a very 'chatty' event interface, using the Subscribe().Where(...) will receive all events through the pipeline and the client does the filtering. What I am wondering is if there will be something akin to IQueryableObservable, whereby these LINQ methods will be 'compiled' into some 'smart' Subscribe implementation in a source. I can imagine certain network server architectures that could use such a framework. Or how about an add-on to SQL Server (or any RDBMS for that matter) that would allow .NET code to receive new data notifications (triggers in code) and would need those notifications filtered server-side.

• Is there an easy way of obtaining the total page response time in ASP.Net?

  Hello, commonly on say PHP or other web frameworks getting the total response time is easy, just start the timer at the top of the file and stop it at the end. In ASP.Net there is the whole Page Lifecycle bit though so I'm not sure how to do this. I would like for this response time recording to take place in a master page and the response time show up in the footer of pages. What would be the best way of doing this? Is there something built in to ASP.Net for it? Is it even possible to include the OnRender time?
