• Best Practices for a Web App Staging Server (on a budget)

  I'd like to set up a staging server for a Rails app. I use git & github, Cap, and have a VPS with Apache/Passenger. I'm curious as to the best practices for a staging setup, as far as both the configuration of the staging server as well as the processes for interacting with it. I do know it should be as identical to the production server as possible, but restricting public access to it will limit that, so tips on securing it only for my use would also be great. Another specific question would be whether I could just create a virtual host on the VPS, so that the staging server could reside alongside the production one. I have a feeling there may be reasons to avoid this, though.

• MYSQL - How to increment fields in one row with values from another row

  I have a table that we'll call 'Sales' with 4 rows: uid, date, count and amount. I want to increment the count and amount values for one row with the count/amount values from a different row in that table. Example: UID | Date | Count | Amount| 1 | 2013-06-20 | 1 | 500 | 2 | 2013-06-24 | 2 | 1000 | Ideal results would be uid 2's count/amount values being incremented by uid 1's values: UID | Date | Count | Amount| 1 | 2013-06-20 | 1 | 500 | 2 | 2013-06-24 | 3 | 1500 | Please note that my company's database is an older version of MYSQL (3.something) so subqueries are not possible. I am curious to know if this is possible outside of doing an "update sales set count = count + 1" and likewise for the amount columns. I have a lot of rows to update and incrementing the values individually is quite time consuming if you can imagine. Thanks for any help or suggestions!

• How do you run your unit tests? Compiler flags? Static libraries?

  I'm just getting started with TDD and am curious as to what approaches others take to run their tests. For reference, I am using the google testing framework, but I believe the question is applicable to most other testing frameworks and to languages other than C/C++. My general approach so far has been to do either one of three things: Write the majority of the application in a static library, then create two executables. One executable is the application itself, while the other is the test runner with all of the tests. Both link to the static library. Embed the testing code directly into the application itself, and enable or disable the testing code using compiler flags. This is probably the best approach I've used so far, but clutters up the code a bit. Embed the testing code directly into the application itself, and, given certain command-line switches either run the application itself or run the tests embedded in the application. None of these solutions are particularly elegant... How do you do it?

• SVG Using Adobe in IE doesn't work when loading page, but saving the page and then loading it works.

  So I'm trying to get a SVG document to load in IE. I can see it fine, but all calls to .getSVGDocument() fail, the svg onload="onload()" function never gets called and the right-click Adobe SVG Viewer context menu doesn't show up when right-clicking on the svg. It seems as though I'm managing to crash the adobe SVG viewer or something before it is able to call the onload function but after it has drawn the SVG document. As a test I saved the html page to my hard drive and loaded it up and walla - it works! Right-click, onload, and .getSVGDocument() all work. Very curious. For some reason getting the page from the server makes the adobe plugin crap out but loading up static HTML is fine. Any thoughts?

• How do you create a Google Maps-esque drop down dialog?

  In the Google Maps application, when you open the menu and click on "Directions", it pops up a dialog that is unique to Google Maps. It keeps the MapView in the background, but displays the search dialog from the top (or bottom, if you're on an old version of Android). I was curious if anyone knew how they achieved this effect. I'm willing to create a custom Dialog, but it seems that Dialogs are designed to pop into the middle of the screen (any other types of dialogs are denied permission as system dialogs). What trick is Google Maps using?

• Create a Visual Studio type look using Java Swing

  I would like to create extend a Java Swing application to have a look somewhat similar to an IDE such as Eclipse or Visual Studio. That’s, there would be a panel at the left that displays a tree, and a tab panel on the right that allows several elements of the tree to be opened and edited on right. For this I could easily use a BorderLayout and just use the center and left areas. However, I would also like to have the ability for the user to drag the border between these two panels, just like Eclipse and Visual Studio allow. I can think of several ways to do this, but was curious if anyone had found a particularly good way to do this, or knew of an example. I’ve googled for it, but have not found anything.

• Sort database entries via a dropdown list

  Hello! I'm curious if anyone could possibly help me, because I can't find anything exactly related to it anywhere, and it's driving me nuts. I'd like to have a dropdown list on a page, that will give the visitor the option to sort all entries by year. I have entries from i.e. 2001, 2005, 2009, 2010. The years should be displayed in the dropdown, so the visitor can easily just select all entries dated 2001 if they want. The year for each entry is located in the one database table I have. In other words, I simply want a "sort by" dropdown that you can see on pretty much any shopping site nowadays. But with set years. Thanks in advance for any replies!

• how do copyright permission systems for content hosting sites work?

  I am wondering about subscription sites that host content, like recorded performances from concerts. I'm sure there is a tangle of copyright permissions that must be granted for these video/audio files to be hosted. For example, if a band plays a cover of another band's song, permission must be obtained from not only the band that performed, but the band that owns the song. Perhaps even from the venue that hosted the performance, to record the video and post the content. I am curious how websites that host content like this work. How might an automated copyright system work to keep track of who has ownership of certain performances and obtain permission from said owners to record and post their content.

  I'd be curious to understand if there's any substantial difference in specifying libraries (both shared and static) to gcc/g++ in the two following ways (CC can be g++ or gcc) CC -o output_executable /path/to/my/libstatic.a /path/to/my/libshared.so source1.cpp source2.cpp ... sourceN.cpp vs CC -o output_executable -L/path/to/my/libs -lstatic -lshared source1.cpp source2.cpp ... sourceN.cpp I can only see a major difference being that passing directly the fully-specified library name would make for a greater control in choosing static or dynamic versions, but I suspect there's something else going on that can have side effects on how the executable is built or will behave at runtime, am I right? • Conceptually, how does replay work in a game?

  I was kind of curious as to how replay might be implemented in a game. Initially, I thought that there would be just a command list of every player/ai action that was taken in the game, and it then 're-plays' the game and lets the engine render as usual. However, I have looked at replays in FPS/RTS games, and upon careful inspection even things like the particles and graphical/audible glitches are consistent (and those glitches are generally *in*consistent). So How does this happen. In fixed camera angle games I though it might just write every frame of the whole scene to a stream that gets stored and then just replays the stream back, but that doesn't seem like enough for games that allow you to pause and move the camera around. You'd have to store the locations of everything in the scene at all points in time (No?). So for things like particles, that's a lot of data to push which seems like a significant draw on the game's performance whilst playing.

• Accessing entire netflix catalog via API v1.5

  Netflix recently updated their API methods for obtaining the full Netflix catalog. I'm curious if anyone has had any success accessing these new xml documents and downloading them via API v1.5 (9/2012). Previously, you could download the entire Netflix catalog via one API call (which I had working perfectly). Now, there are supposedly two calls to make: one for dvd's and one for streaming movies. I cannot make these calls return anything except for an empty array. Please don't offer an answer unless you have personally downloaded the entire catalog via these new API's. • Database Design Question: GUID + Natural Numbers

  For a database I'm building, I've decided to use natural numbers as the primary key. I'm aware of the advantages that GUID's allow, but looking at the data, the bulk of row's data were GUID keys. I want to generate XML records from the database data, and one problem with natural numbers is that I don't want to expose my database key's to the outside world, and allow users to guess "keys." I believe GUID's solve this problem. So, I think the solution is to generate a sparse, unique iD derived from the natural ID (hopefully it would be 2-way), or just add an extra column in the database and store a guid (or some other multibyte id) The derived value is nicer because there is no storage penalty, but it would be easier to reverse and guess compared to a GUID. I'm (buy) curious as to what others on SO have done, and what insights they have.

  What if a user hits my site with http://www.mysite.com/Quote/Edit rather than http://www.mysite.com/Quote/Edit/1000 In other words, they do not specify a value for {id}. If they do not, I want to display a nice "Not Found" page, since they did not give an ID. I currentl handle this by accepting a nullable int as the parameter in the Controller Action and it works fine. However, I'm curious if there a more standard MVC framework way of handling this, rather than the code I presently use (see below). Is a smoother way to handle this, or is this pretty mush the right way to do it? • memcached cluster maintenance

  Scaling up memcached to a cluster of shards/partitions requires either distributed routing/partition table maintenance or centralized proxying (and other stuff like detecting failures). What are the popular/typical approaches/systems here? There's software like libketama, which provides consistent hashing, but this is just a client-side library that reacts to messages about node arrivals/departures---do most users just run something like this, plus separate monitoring nodes that, on detecting failures, notify all the libketamas of the departure? I imagine something like this might be sufficient since typical use of memcached as a soft-state cache doesn't require careful attention to consistency, but I'm curious what people do.

  I am curious about how c/c++ compiler analyse lib files ? I mean say I create a library containing some classes, I am using that library in my main program. How does compiler know what class names are there in that library. Of course that information is present in binary format, I want to use that functionality in my program, to be specific I have a binary lib file and I want to know all classes and properties/functions present in that lib file.   I have a very strange bug, which I believe is caused by some code we have executing, but I'm not sure where. We can reproduce it to the point it happens whenever we click Tab, but short of putting a break point at the beginning of every method in the project to find out what is executing. Is there a way to set visual studio to break whenever anything executes? For those curious about the problem, every now and then, we have a few Rich Text Boxes that refuse to lose focus. You can't click out of it or tab out of it. We have no On Validation or On Text Changed events attached to the control, and believe it's an event attached somewhere else to something we just aren't noticing.

Here's where I'm stuck: ls -1 | grep _ | xargs -I {} ln -s {} `{} | sed 's/_/-/'` What I'm trying to do is run the command ln -s with the first argument being the directory name and the second argument being that name passed through sed s/_/-/. Is there another way to do this?

  I saw a flash website and was curious to now if this is something possible to build using Jquery, obviously not the entire thing. I was more looking to fade out div1 and div2 with a button click. This is the example site: www.justinfarrellyconstruction.com Example: If i come to the homepage and click the portfolio button the Gallery Div will fade out then fade in another image.   I want to know what exactly the output tells when I do the following : class data { int a=5; } class main { public static void main(String[] args) { data dObj=new data(); System.out.println(dObj); } } I know it gives something related to object as the output in my case is data@1ae73783. I guess the '1ae73783' is a hex number. I also did some work around and printed System.out.println(dObj.hashCode()); I got number 415360643. I got an integer value. I don't know what hashCode() returns, still out of curiosity, when I converted 1ae73783 to decimal, I got 415360643! That's why I am curious that what exactly is this number?? Is this some memory location of Java's sandbox or some other thing? Any light on this matter will be helpful..thanks! :)

• String Occurance Counting Algorithm

  Hello, I am curious what is the most efficient algorithm (or commonly used) to count the number of occurances of a string in a chunck of text. From what I read, Boyer–Moore string search algorithm is the standard for string search but I am not sure if counting occurance in an efficient way would be same as searching a string. In python this is what I want: text_chunck = "one two three four one five six one" occurance_count(text_chunck, "one") # gives 3. Regards EDIT: It seems like python str.count serves me such method however I am not able to find what algorithm it uses.
