• Change list link to foreign key change page

  When viewing the admin change list for a model, is it possible to make the columns that correspond to foreign keys links to their respective pages? A simple example is I have a Foo object which contains Bar as a foreign key. If I'm viewing the admin change list for Foo (and have it set to include Bar in the display_list columns), the main column would link to the Foo instance's edit page while the Bar column would link to the Boo instance's edit page. I understand I can override the template that's used, but I was curious if there was a solution that didn't require that.

• Why is this javascript function so slow on Firefox?

Firefox's profiler says I'm spending the most time in this function and I'm curious as to why that is. Is there a way to get the em size in javascript without doing all this work? I would like to recalculate the size on resize incase the user has changed it.

• iPhone: InterfaceBuilder nibs disconnected from my project

  Since upgrading to XCode 3.2, InterfaceBuilder doesn't play nice. All of my image links are broken in IB but they'll show fine when I compile. When I go to the combo box to select an image for my UIImageView, it doesn't have the image files I've added to my app. I also can't create a new .nib and associate it with a class I've written. Like images, my custom viewcontrollers aren't available to pick from. I'm going to try a reinstall but I was curious if anyone's dealt with this?

  I have written code to upload the files of different types using php, and also i am saving their location information and date in database table. i made a query to display list of files i have uploaded...and resulting output on a html page as follows 1.uploads/clouds.png date and time 2.uploads/resume.pdf dare and time .......so on is there any different any way to display them by their file types as like an operating systems do..... or any better way.... I am curious to know it... Thanks for any help...

• Is there a way to hide a row or column in excel without using VBA?

  I know of several approaches using a macro (VBA) to show/hide columns and rows in Excel, but I cannot figure out or find a way to do this using either a formula or conditional formatting. Of particular interest is Excel 2007 - but I'd be curious to know if someone has managed to do it in any version of Excel. For those who want background, I have a spread of data with dates across the top and labels down the first column. I would like to specify a date window (on another sheet) as two cells with drop down dates (months) which would then show/hide the appropriate columns on the data sheet.

  I was working on a Rails template and was trying to write a bit of code that allows me to populate a table or multiple columns of ul tags "top-to-bottom" and "left-to-right" across however many columns I specify. I'm just getting the hang of Ruby so I couldn't figure this out. I'm also curious about an idiomatic Haskell version for this useful snippet.   It seems that XAML files should have corresponding .cs files in a C# project. I know Visual Studio does all the things for us. I'm just curious how they are linked together? I mean, are they specified in the project file, or just because they have the same names? And also, App.xaml file specifies the startup file, but how does the compiler know? Is it possible to appoint another file other than App.xaml to do the same things as App.xaml does?

The naming of the main Node.js file is something left to the user and and does not seem to be defined by any well established convention. In hopes of finding a good name, I am curious if there are naming conventions in other parts of the Node.js ecosystem that might suggest a name to use. Some names I have seen are: app.js, index.js, main.js, server.js, etc. Please provide only well documented standards in answers.

• Load python module not from a file

  Hello, I've got some python code in a library that attempts to load a simple value from a module that will exist for the applications that use this library from somemodule import simplevalue Normally, the application that uses the library will have the module file and everything works fine. However, in the unit tests for this library the module does not exist. I know that I can create a temporary file and add that file to my path at runtime, but I was curious if there is a way in python to load something in to memory that would allow the above import to work. This is more of a curiosity, saying "add the module to your test path" is not helpful :P

• Replace Spring.Net IoC with another Container (e.g. Ninject)

  Hey all, I'm curious to know if it's possible to replace Spring.Net's built-in IoC container with Ninject. We use Ninject on my team for IoC in our other projects so I would like to continue using that container if possible. Is this possible? Has anyone written a Ninject-Spring.Net Adapter?? Edit I like many parts of the Spring.Net package (the data access, transactions, etc.) but I don't really like the dependency injection container. I would like to replace that with Ninject Thanks

• Pre-loading external files (CSS, JavaScript) for other pages

  I'm curious if there is an efficient way to wait for the front page of a site to load, and then pre-load CSS and script files that I know will likely be needed for the other pages on the site. I want the front page of the site to be as fast as possible (lean and mean). It's likely that the user will not immediately click on a link. Since there will likely be some idle time, this seems like an opportune time to pre-load some of the external assets. Pre-loading should cause them to become cached. When the user does click on another page, the only request needed will be for the content and possibly some images, etc. Has anyone done this? Is it a bad idea? Is there an elegant way to implement it?

• list(of byte) to Picturebox

  I have a jpeg file that is being held as a list(of Byte) Currently I have code that I can use to load and save the jpeg file as either a binary (.jpeg) or a csv of bytes (asadsda.csv). I would like to be able to take the list(of Byte) and convert it directly to a Picturebox without saving it to disk and then loading it to the picturebox. If you are curious, the reason I get the picture file as a list of bytes is because it gets transfered over serial via an industrial byte oriented protocol as just a bunch of bytes. I am using VB.net, but C# example is fine too.

• Connecting to TFS via ASP.NET, jQuery and Phonegap

  I want to develop a mobile application that would allow the user the ability to run a suite of automated test cases housed in TFS. This is something I thought of this morning so it's all still very preliminary. But I'm curious as to what would be the best route for something like this? Or if it's even possible? Because the mobile devices from the users will vary from iphones to droids, I would probably want to incorporate something like Phonegap for it's cross platform capabilities. My initial thought was to develop in ASP.net/C# (which would be stored on a remote server), and have jQuery make calls to that server. Not sure if that would be the most appropriate way of handling this. I'm not too familiar with JSON but I have seen it as a suggestion on various sites to handle the returned data. Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

• Which Java Web Framework allows Cross-Domain Javascripting (http proxy) ?

  So just a quick intro, I am starting to explore Vaadin, and it's absolutely perfect. Previously, I was juggling PHP, Perl, Ruby, and Jquery for designing rich client web application. It didn't work out too well, as I've burnt out from trying to fix cross browser issues (aka get-it-to-work-on-IE-damn-it), handling server-side, client-side, and building a robust communication between the two tier had lot of code not related to application logic....by the time I was burnt out, only tiny bit of application logic was implemented. Vaadin seems like the answer to my problem as it only requires Java and built on top of GWT. However, I am curious how I can incorporate Cross-Domain Javascripting ? Back in LAMP environment, I had a CGI proxy script that loaded external URL, and injected JS into the proxy-loaded page. I used the CGI proxy script, as it rendered Javascript of the external URL well. Is there a class or package for Java or a specific Java web framework similiar to Vaadin that makes this possible ? • C++ Scoping and ambiguity in constructor overloads

  I've tried the following code snippet in 3 different compilers (G++, clang++, CL.exe) and they all report to me that they cannot disambiguate the overloaded constructors. Now, I know how I could modify the call to the constructor to make it pick one or the other (either make explicit that the second argument is a unsigned literal value or explicitly cast it). However, I'm curious why the compiler would be attempting to choose between constructors in the first place given that one of the constructors is private and the call to the constructor is happening in the main function which should be outside the class's scope. • Assigning data to an <li> element?

  Hi, I am generating some list items as a result of a search, and I want to attach some data to each list element from the search (possibly a bad idea to merge ui and data), but now curious about it. I am doing this: var element = $("<li>Hello</li>); element.mydata = "foo"; element.appendTo("#panelParent"); so I'm just assigning my stuff to element.mydata. My click handler reports that no such data exists for the element when clicked: $('#panelParent').delegate('li', 'click', function() { // this.mydata is undefined. }); where did it go to? I could keep the data external to the a list item element, was wondering if there's a convenient way like this to just keep it bound though? Thanks

• git: Your branch is Ahead by X commits

  How does this actually come about? I am working in one repo by myself at the moment, so this is my workflow: 1- change files 2- commit 4- repeat until satisfied 4- push to master Then when I do a git status it tells me that my branch is ahead by X commits (presumably the same number of commits that I have made). Is it because when you push the code it doesn't actually update your locally cached files (in the .git folders)? git pull seems to 'fix' this strange message, but I am still curious why it happens, maybe I am using git wrong?

• Is there a generic open-source reporting system out there?

  I recently started a position at a new company, and one of the first projects they want is an internal reporting system that points at database A, B, C and reports various metrics/statistics/predictions. Basically, the same thing I've done or worked on and every company I've ever been hired by. Since this gets a bit boring after a while, I was wondering if there already exists some sort of open-source package that accomplishes this goal. Ideally, it would work with multiple databases out-of-box (PostgreSQL, MySQL, MSSQL, Oracle minimally), determine relationships between tables (either automatically from their schemas, or allow you to manually set them up after pooling all the tables), allow you to create reports based on a subset of tables, customizing what data you wanted to be displayed/calculated (I suppose this would be challenging since you've no idea what every audience wants, and would need to make this flexible) I'm debating making something like this in my spare time if one does not already exist. Just curious.

• Tool to view/plan keyboard shortcuts?

  I'm curious if there are any tools available* that will help me map out keyboard shortcuts for the application I'm working on? Being able to see what combinations are in use, the relationships between normal, ctrl, shift, and alt combinations, and especially what combinations are NOT in use, would be wonderfully helpful. Please forgive me if I am missing an obvious solution, but I've had no luck searching for such a tool myself, due to every application in existence having its own keyboard shortcuts, and all of those being listed on the web. Thanks! *Naturally, I'd prefer free/cheap, but it can't hurt to hear about any expensive options.

  Hi, how come that when I attach onchange by attribute and call it onchange="validateDate(FPR_CURR_FROM);" it works, but when I use a ASP .NET validator, and my attached function is called like : function anonymous() { ValidatorOnChange(event); validateDate(FPR_CURR_FROM); } I get error: FPR_CURR_FROM is undefined. First off: I know that using FPR_CURR_FROM to access element is BAD, and I should use getElementByID etc... And I will change it eventually. But as I bumped into that code, I'm curious what caused it - propably visibility of variables I guess.

  In Blackberry's Application class what is the difference between hasEventThread() and isHandlingEvents(). I'm just curious, because I have only found hasEventThread useful. From BB's docs for Applicaiton: public boolean hasEventThread() Determines if this application has entered the event dispatcher. Returns: True if this application has entered the event dispatcher (i.e. has invoked Application.enterEventDispatcher()); otherwise, false. isHandlingEvents public final boolean isHandlingEvents() Determines if this application has entered the event dispatch loop. Returns: True if the application has entered the event dispatch loop; otherwise, false. My only guess is that isHandlingEvents most happen sometime after hasEventThread. But is that really that useful?

• Call external library from PHP. What is faster: exec or extension?

  Hi, I need to make calls from webpage to external library written in C++ and display the result. Platform is Linux, Apache, PHP. My current idea is to use PHP service which will call my library/program. I found that there are two possible ways to do this: 1) use PHP 'exec' function 2) write PHP extension I am curious what works more effective? Faster? Less load the server? I will probably need to do 4 calls per second, so I want to be as optimal as possible. P.S. • Updating the Jpanel of a class

  Hi, After some advice on using jpanel - I'm new to java and playing around with the GUI elements. Bascially what I'm curious about is if I can set up a Jpanel in one class, then somehow add labels etc to the that container, but from another class. Is this possible ? or do i have to set the entire GUI up in one class, but then I guess I would have the same issue, if I wanted to update those fields I had set up in the main class from another class? Apologies I don't really have any code that's usefull to demostrate here - I'm just trying to get the idea going, working out if its possible before I go ahead. And I'm not even sure if this is possible. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

• What is your favorite colorscheme FOR PROGRAMMING in Vim?

  I think this is a relevant question for programmers and I'd like to hear other people's answers because some syntax highlighting color schemes are better on the eyes than others. This can affect productivity as much as ergonomic keyboards or anything else on here. It's about comfort and productivity. So, I'm curious. Do you find some color schemes better adapted for some languages over others? At the other end of the spectrum, I think coding without syntax highlight is awful and slow going. • Is there a way to have a bit bucket pointer? (C/C++)

  Is there a way to have a bit bucket pointer? A lot of IO (specifically input related) system calls return data to a buffer of a specific size. Is there a trick or way to make a sorta bit bucket pointer, so I can accept any amount of data that will be thrown away. Doing something like "char tmp[INT_MAX]" is crazy. The behavior I am looking for is something like /dev/null, only in a pointer world. Not to hopeful on this.... just curious. Thanks, Chenz UPDATE: Perhaps mmap-ing /dev/null.
