  • Firefox all but freezes during large file upload; Ajax progress bar infeasible; IE6 works fine

    I want to provide a progress bar for my users who upload very large files. I did some reading and implemented what should be a pretty straightforward solution: I have a <form> element that contains an file input element; its target is set to the ID of a hidden iframe. On the server side, there's some Spring magic that attaches an object to the user's session; the progress of the upload can be queried from this object. After submitting the form, I start a repeating Ajax call using setInterval that queries the server for the percent-complete using the aforementioned session object. The call repeats every half-second, skipping the Ajax call if the previous call has not yet completed. I use the data from the call to update the width of an onscreen element. When the server call reports that the upload is complete, I clear the interval timer. I created a 100-megabyte file and uploaded it using my interface. This is using Firefox 3.6.3. What I found is that although the upload takes 20-25 seconds, the progress bar doesn't get updated until the very end. Moreover, the entire browser is basically frozen until the upload completes. I assumed that my method must be flawed, but I tried the same page using IE6, and was utterly amazed when it behaved as I had designed it to--the progress bar got updated every half second, and the whole upload only took about 15 seconds, much faster than Firefox. I don't have many add-ons installed, but I tried disabling Firebug and restarting my browser. This marginally improved the performance--I got perhaps a single additional progress bar update mid-upload--but still far from acceptable. Can anyone tell me what I can do to bring Firefox's performance up to the level of IE6? Ugh, I can't believe I actually typed that. EDIT: I just tried uploading a large file from a Firefox 3.6.3 browser on a different machine than the one that's running my web server, and it worked fine. Huh.

  • DNS add-on domain setup and redirect

    I have several domains which I'd like to point to another (I'll call it foo.com). A couple of things aren't entirely clear to me. First, the DNS. I'm using Kloxo/HyperVM. Do I need to create separate DNS entries for each domain? Or do I just create separate CNAME or other records under foo.com? I thought it was the latter but when I click on "Add CNAME" I'm prompted to fill in the subdomain portion of foo.com. The nameservers have already been set to point to my VPS. For the redirect, would the following be appropriate within the vhost conf for foo.com?   • NAS is intermittently inaccessible

    Model: QNAP TS-410 Turbo NAS Firmware version: 3.2.5 Build 0409T Issue: Each day, users connect to share folders on the NAS system and have read/write permissions for the share folders to which they need access. However, it often asks them for their log-in details and - when provided with right (or wrong) credentials for a user with read/write permissions - it denies them access.   • Running bundle install fails trying to remote fetch from rubygems.org/quick/Marshal...

    I'm getting a strange error when doing bundle install: $ bundle install Fetching source index for http://rubygems.org/ rvm/rubies/ree-1.8.7-2010.02/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8/rubygems/remote_fetcher.rb:304 :in `open_uri_or_path': bad response Not Found 404 (http://rubygems.org/quick/Marshal.4.8/resque-scheduler-1.09.7.gemspec.rz) (Gem::RemoteFetcher::FetchError) I've tried bundle update, gem source -c, gem update --system, gem cleanup, etc etc. Nothing seems to solve this. I notice that the URL beginning with http://rubygems.org/quick does seem to be a 404 -- I don't think that's any problem with my network, though if that's reachable for anyone else then that would be a simple explanation for my problem. More hints: If I just gem install resque-scheduler it works fine: $ gem install resque-scheduler Successfully installed resque-scheduler-1.9.7 1 gem installed Installing ri documentation for resque-scheduler-1.9.7...   • How do I get Firefox to launch Visio when I click on a linked .vsd file?

    On our intranet site, we have various MS Office documents linked. When I click on a Word, Excel or PowerPoint file, Firefox gives me the option to Open, Save or Cancel. When I click on Open, the appropriate app is launched and the file is loaded. This is perfect. But for some reason, when I click on a linked Visio file, I only get the option to Save, which is inconvenient. I know that Firefox knows the linked file is a Visio file because it tells me so in the dialog box: "You have chosen to open example.vsd which is a: Microsoft Visio Drawing". How can I make Firefox launch Visio when I click on a linked Visio file? Update: Firefox is not launching Visio when I click on a linked Visio file because the web server does not identify the content-type correctly. It identifies the Visio file as application/octet-stream instead of application/x-visio. (Thanks Grant Wagner.) This explains why it doesn't work. And in my case, I may be able to get the Apache config file changed, but this is not certain. However, I would love to know if there is a way to configure Firefox itself to launch Visio based on some other criteria, like file name extension. This way I can open Visio files even if I don't have access to the Apache configuration.

  • 32-bit JVM on 64-bit Windows crashes on launch with -Xmx1300m and plenty of free memory

    I'm struggling with Java heap space settings. The default Java on Windows is the 32-bit client regardless of OS version (that's what Oracle recommends to all users). It appears to set max heap size to 256 MB by default, and that is too little for me. I use a custom launcher to start the application. I would like it to use more memory on computers with plenty RAM, and default to -Xmx512m on those with less RAM. As far as I'm aware, the only way is the static -Xmx setting (that has to be set on launch). I have a user who has 8 GB RAM, 64-bit Windows and 32-bit Java 7. Maximum memory visible to the JVM is 4G (as returned by querying OperatingSystemMXBean). I understand why, no issue. For some reason my application is unable to start for this user with -Xmx1300m, even though he has 2.3G free memory. He closed some applications (having 5G free memory), and still it would not launch. The error reported to me was: error occured during init of vm could not reserve enough space for object heap What's going on? Could it be that the 32-bit JVM is only able to address the "first" 4G of memory and has to have a 1300M block available within those first 4 gigabytes? How can I solve this problem, except for asking everyone to install 64-bit Java (what is unlikely to be acceptable)?

  • How can I disable the css {position:fixed} side-bar on Slashdot?

    When I look at a story on Slashdot, I see a side-bar that sits constantly in the upper-left corner. Every time I open a story, I have to click on the "slash" sign in its upper-right corner. How can I disable it, so it will always have css position absolute, relative or static? Is there an option for it? Because I find it is slowing my browser down when I am scrolling the page. Yet there is one thing I'm not pleased off: when there are errors and the quickfix window pops up, its status bar is cluttered up with the makeprg string: pdflatex\ \-file\-line\-error\ \-shell\-escape\ \-interaction=nonstopmode\ $*\\\|\ tee\ \/dev\/tty\ \\\|\ grep\ \-P\ ':\\d{1,5}:\ ' Is there a way of changing the quickfix title/statusbar?

  • Moving a window that can't be dragged by the title bar?

    I have Fallout Collection and I am trying to run it windowed because of the low resolution. When I change the mode to windowed via the .ini file, however, it starts the game with the window shoved into the upper left corner of my screen. Clicking the title bar of the window just clicks back into the game program. So how can I move it to the center of my screen? I am using Windows 7 professional 64-bit.

    Since Firefox 7 (or 6?) they silently removed "http" from the address bar. Previously, when you clicked it, "http" showed up again, allowing to easily just change http into https. So far, I found two ways to get it back, but isn't there a setting I can use to have it permanently in vision again, or at least when I click it? Way 1: copy selection and paste it again Way 2: type the whole scheme again in front of the address ...

    Hi, I'm having problem with MS Chart chart type column. If there are only 9 bar in the chart like the following picture, then the axis-x label show up properly. However, there are more than 9 bars bar the chart, the axis-x label wont show up properly, some of them just dissappear.   • Is it possible to have a SeekBar's thumb image extend outside the bar?

    I have set negative paddings on my custom seekbar so that the round thumb image can go outside the bar, but the thumb isn't rendered out there, is there anyway to force the thumb to be drawn outside those bounds? Sorry guys, I'm new to Android development, and have been tasked with fixing an existing application. The problem is that we have a custom rounded looking track bar, which consists of two rounded 'end cap' images and a 1 px background that is tiled to create the seekbar. As far as I can tell there was never one image that could be set as the background of a normal SeekBar, which is why a custom one was created. The thumb is a circle and needs to 'fit' into the end caps - the three pieces of the bar are in a relative layout. Right now I'm kind of unclear as to how the 1 px background png gets stretched as the seekbar bg, otherwise I would try to tack on the two endcaps onto that drawable some how ... ? Please let me know if this was unclear and I'll try to post any followup info. Thanks in advance for any advice!! Oh, I'm using Android 2.1 if that's relevant to anyone's interests :)
