• USB Hardware vs. Software Write Lock

  I'm in the market for a USB flash drive, and remember this cool feature a tiny 32MB flash drive of mine had: a write lock switch. This seemed like it would be an amazing feature to have as a shield against any nastiness happening to the drive on an unfamiliar computer. However, very few drives on the market offer this feature. Instead, it seems that forms of software protection are the more prominent method. This software protection causes me a bit of uneasiness, as it seems like this software wouldn't be nearly as bulletproof as a physical switch. Also, levels of protection seem to vary from product to product. Being able to protect certain folders from reading and/or writing would be nice, but is the security trade-off worth it? Just how effective can this software protection be? Wouldn't a simple format be able to clean any drive with software protection? My drive must also be compatible with Windows XP, Vista, and 7, as well as Linux and Mac. What would be the best way forward for getting a well-sized (~8GB) flash drive with a strong write protection implementation, for little or no more than a regular drive? Thanks.

• ActiveReports nested subreport rendering resulting in error

  I'm having a problem with an ActiveReports(3.0) report which contains nested subreports. The problem is that the child/grandchild subreports are rendering before their predecessor has completed rendering so the XMLDataSource cannot be set properly. It seems to be a purely timing issue has occassionally if I am debugging the report in Visual Studio and stepping through the code the report will generate but mostly I get an error message: "FileURL not set or empty" The FileURL is supposed to be empty has we are dynamically loading the XML to the report. The structure of the report is: Parent Child1 Child2 GrandChild2-1 GrandChild2-2 I found one solution going back to 2004 on Data Dynamics website that you basically have to force the subreports to look at the parent. ((DataDynamics.ActiveReports.DataSources.XMLDataSource) subrpt.DataSource).FileURL = ((DataDynamics.ActiveReports.DataSources.XMLDataSource) this.DataSource).FileURL; This seemed to work for a while until I took out all my breakpoints and tried to run it and now it just gives me the error message. If anyone has ran across this or has any suggestions on getting around it, it would be greatly appreciated. Running ActiveReports 5.3.1436.2 thanks, Chris

  What is the proper procedure for distributing software updates using group policy's software installation feature? For example, if I want to install Java, and Java 1.7u6 is already added as a package, should I: A) Remove the Java 1.7u6 package (selecting the "allow users to continue to use" option), and add Java 1.7u7? B) Add Java 1.7u7 and specify that it is an update to the existing 1.7u6 package? (Will this install the oldest version first, then install each update one after the other, or will it just install the latest package?) Note that this question is geared toward the operation of the software installation feature of group policy, not specifically the behavior of the Java installers. This could easily apply to the installation of Adobe Flash, Adobe Reader, or any other common software applications with frequent updates.

• Good software to take a blog and format it for printing

  I have much of my family's doings on a Blogspot blog. I would like to print this out in a nice book. The actual printing I plan to just send to CostCo as Photo Prints. But I need some kind of software to reformat the posts into printable paper size sheets. I would like it if I could retain my blog's background and let me adjust how the pictures fit on the screen. Now I could do all of this with MS Publisher or Word. But I am curious if there is any other software out there that does this nice and easy. Anyone know of some cool software that will do this for me? Free is nice, but I am not above paying a modest fee for cool software. I would prefer to avoid another website that will charge for the printing as well as the converting.

• TV Playout software for Windows Server without DirectX?

  I am trying to find a TV Playout software (video mixer) for Windows Server 2003/2008 which can stream via rtmp to Justin.tv without the need for DirectX. The reason for this is that the server which would run the TV Playout software is hosted/virtualized via an ESXi server, and does not have DirectX support. Even if there was software that could just stream a playlist of video files to Justin.tv that would be a start. Thanks

• Django Caught an exception while rendering: No module named registration

  I seem to have run into a bit of an issue. I am busy creating an app, and over the last few weeks setup my server to use Git, mod_wsgi to host this app. Since deploying it, everything seems to be running smoothly however, I had to go through all my files and insert the absolute url of the project to make sure it works fine. on my local machine from registration.models import UserRegistration on server from myapp.registration.models import UserRegistration Am I doing something wrong? And this has also caused an issue for me where I cannot access my django admin interface. All i get is this: Caught an exception while rendering: No module named registration Exception Value: Caught an exception while rendering: No module named registration As far as I am concerned my app has all the relevant urls, but it does not seem to work. Under his profile and only his, when the software is run, the software opens hundreds of thousands of handles, regarding token queries. This involves only this specific user, on his computer, using only said software. I have narrowed down the issue to being related to his profile but am unsure of what to look at next. • Virtual Earth Shape Rendering Performance

  I am overlaying a transparent image on my VEMap control by rendering it as a single VEShape. The shape changes sizes dynamically depeding on the zoom level of my map and can be as large as 4000*4000px. In older browsers such as IE6 and early versions of Firefox 2.x, map control performance degrades rapidly when my shape gets larger than 1500*1500px. The mouse pointer moves slowly and the map responds very slowly to events. I don't see this issue at all in newer browsers (IE7+). Are there any workarounds to boost performance of rendering a large shape for IE6 users?

Has anyone ever heard of or used this program? I just want to make sure this company is legit and the software runs efficiently. The server I would be installing it on has about 40-50 users on it. I am hoping the software has some type of setting to only monitor certain users, because i would hate to waste resources. If this is not good software, does anyone have any recommendations?

  I'm creating an HttpModule that needs to know the value of Thread.CurrentThread.CurrentCulture as set in an MVC application. That value is currently being set by the BaseController, but when my HttpModule.PostRequestHandlerExecute() method fires, it reverts to what the Culture was prior to page rendering. I have duplicated this by creating a simple web app with these steps: Module.PreRequestHandlerExecute: Set culture to A Page_Load: Culture is currently A. Set culture to B Module.PostRequestHandlerExecute: Current thread culture is A. I expected it to be B but it was changed between page rendering and PostRequestHandlerExecute Any idea why .Net changes this value or how I could get around it? The thread is the same, so something in .Net must be explicitly reverting the culture.

• Options for installing software on Amazon EC2 Windows instances

  I've been running Linux servers on Amazon EC2 for a while now; the experience has been great. I've recently needed to bring up a Windows server to run some Windows-only software that our product needs to use, and am running into a problem figuring out how to install the software, which is only available on DVD. With Linux I can just install packages from a Web-based repository and take advantage of EC2's fast network throughput, but so far on the Windows instance I've had to upload my ISO images to EC2 and mount them from the Windows EC2 instance. For some reason I'm getting really slow upload speeds to EC2, even though the regular upload speed from our office is pretty good (around 7Mbps). I've also tried mounting the DVD drive on my machine as a local drive on the EC2 instance via Remote Desktop, and then running the software install from the local drive, but I run into the same slow upload speed issue. Does anyone have a better way to install software from physical media onto an EC2 instance ?

• Master's in Software Engineering vs. Master's in Computer Science: which degree is preferred by empl

  I've been building software professionally for 7 years and am considering a master's degree. I understand the difference between these two degrees as simply: MSCS is the theory while MSE is the practice. I'm equally interested in both and would be happy with either, although I'm curious how these degrees rank in the eyes of a potential employer. I could see two views that a hiring manager could possibly take: a MSCS is loftier and has an implied knowledge of Software Engineering an MSE is more practical and has an implied knowledge of Computer Science In my own experience I've seen both MSCS degree holders than cannot program at all while others are among the best programmers I've met, so of course actual ability will depend on the individual. My question is about the "on paper" value of these two degrees when seeking a job. All things considered, is one degree more hirable, higher-paying than the other?

• Bing map silverlight control content rendering issue when page gets refresh

  When Bing map control loads for first time on any browser all pushpin on map are visible. Bing map control renders perfectly. Then I refresh browser it create rendering issue some custom pushpin on map gets disappeared. This behavior continues with pushpin. Pushpin are (.png) images and I am not using default bing map thumbtacks. May be it is issue of browser caching content or Bing map control rendering issues on various browsers.   We are considering using SVG filters as part of our toolchain, serving the SVG to browsers capable of supporting it, while serving pre-rendered PNGs to other. One problem we noticed is that the rendering of the filter chains seems to be very inconsistent across renderers. When looking at the "filters01" example from the SVG specification, the rendering looks very different across the tools we tried. Chrome (5.0.307.11) failed to render the image, while other tools (Firefox 3.6, Opera 10.10, Inkscape 0.47, GIMP 2.6.7) render something vaguely similar in style to the picture in the specification, but no two are truly the same. Is that an issue of under-specification or are the tools just not there? If we would use SVG with filter effects: is there a reference tool that can give us a rendering the way it is intended by the spec?

However, when adding controls which themselves contain a scriptmanagerProxy we run into the problem that the newed up Page object doesn't contain either a ScriptManager or the HtmlForm in which the ScriptManager needs to run. • Text rendering blurred in Firefox and Internet Explorer using jQuery

  Not sure what causes this? If I user slideDown in Firefox the text rendering cuts off the top of the letters before the animation is complete. This is ok in IE. If I then change the animation to use fadeIn instead, the blur does not happen in Firefox but the text is very jagged in IE. From another question I have asked in the past pertaining to animation, the guy told me that I should wrap that which I want to animate in another DIV and animate that instead. This sorted out the jerkiness caused by the padding on the content inside the .animateDiv. Is there a trick to the text rendering as well in jQuery
