• How can I get start openbox at login using the GNOME/Openbox session?

  I want to be able to run openbox as my window manager in GNOME. If I install openbox, I get the additional choices at the GDM login window of a 'GNOME/Openbox' and an 'openbox session'. If I log in with the 'openbox session', it starts openbox successfully. However, if I log in using the 'GNOME/Openbox' session so that I can run GNOME but just replace metacity with openbox, I find that openbox does not start, and that metacity is managing my application windows. It looks something is not working in the GNOME/Openbox session in 10.04 (and possibly other versions of Ubuntu). I know that I can manually replace metacity with openbox by typing 'openbox --replace', but I want to know the correct way of starting openbox in a GNOME environment automatically at logon.

  i am currently learning Java and PHP as I have some projects from university, which require me to apply both languages. Specifically, a Java GUI application, connecting to a MySQL database and a web application that will be implemented in PHP/MySQL. I have started learning the MVC pattern, Struts, Spring and I am also learning PHP with zend. My first question is: How can I find employment as a programmer/software engineer? The reason I ask is because I have sent my CV into many companys, but all of them stated that I required work experience. I really need some guidance on how to improve my career opportunites. At present, I work on my own and haven't worked in collaboration with anyone on a particular project. I'm assuming most people create projects and submit them along with their CVs. My second question is: Everyone has to make a start from somewhere, but what if this somewhere doesn't come? What do I need to do to create the circumstances where I can easily progress forward?   I was looking at the sqlite table that Core Data generates and noticed that all table columns start with 'Z'. I realize this is an implementation detail, but I was curious as to why that's the case and if there was a design decision involved in this. Anyone happen to know or guess why?   I am on the way to create a Live CD from scratch. I used Virtual Box for this purpose. I installed Ubuntu base from ubuntumini.iso and installed gnome-shell. And installed Remastersys and created a backup.iso. Burned in a CD and boot from a PC. It end in CLI. Not lead to GUI. I tried the same ISO in VirtualBox. But it work properly there. I think I missed some packages which help to start GUI. Can you help me to identify the packages missed to include in the CD?

I was input password for email or another services, which registed with "[email protected]", but it's still "incorect". I can close but next time, it appears again. It never appeared before 13.10. • Unable to start GRUB2 on Triple boot Macbook Pro with OS X Lion, Windows 7 and Ubuntu

  I installed Windows 7 using Bootcamp. Then I created a partition from the empty space in the Windows partition and another 4GB partition for the linux swap using GParted. I installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS in the the newly created partition from the Windows partition. Now GRUB2 does not load and I can only see the blinking cursor on the top right when selecting "Windows HD" from the 'option' key at the start up. OS X works fine but nothing else.   My old computer is a mac powerbook g4 that I am considering turning into an Ubuntu Server for my house of eight to share movies and music and whatever.   I have a netbook and a server, to both of which I installed the identical Ubuntu 10.04 LTS distribution. On the server, I had the foresight to install and enable the SSH server before disconnecting the monitor and keyboard and mouse. I then ssh'ed in and enabled the VNC server as well. Now I want the full server experience on the netbook, but when I VNC in, I am greeted with the displayed screen. (names have been redacted) How do I start the rest of the default Ubuntu GUI experience? (the toolbars at the top) ((is that the window manager?))

  I often come across very impressive mods for PC games that don't have an official editor, other development tools or its source code publicly available. (Take this amazing Multiplayer mod for Just Cause 2, for example.) How do you go about creating mods for such games? I'm not talking about replacing the odd texture or 3D model—that sort of thing seems fairly easy given tools to pry them out of game files and put them back in—but more along the lines of adding game behavior. (Tweaking settings files also doesn't count.) Note that I'm not asking "how to create a mod", I just want to know where to start or where to go to learn.

• Ubuntu will not start any more !!!!!!!! PLEASE HELP?

  I really need help , I left my computer downloading all the night and i did donwload 35 go of movies ( legal ....) , I restart the computed in the morning then i booted in my encrypted windows partition for my work. Surprise in the evening when i try to boot on linux again , then it doesnt start as it's telling me low graphic mode , and doesnt boot( happen when it's really full ) . Tryed in rescue and it's telling me i have 0 mo free. Tryed in shell comand sdo root rm - Some files IMPOSSIBLE . it's telling me that my files are only in read only file systems. I mouted my other hard drive in windows as well but there is a '' Write protection '' i can only read the files. Please let me know , what solution do i have ? Should i try live usb with ubuntu ? Thanks guys

• VirtualBox: Start Firefox in Ubuntu via a Windows script?

  I am using VirtualBox to run Ubuntu 12.04 as a guest in a Windows 7 host. I would like execute a command in Windows that will launch Ubuntu's Firefox. I tried VirtualBox's VBoxManage guestcontrol function. The command seems to do something, but nothing seems to happen in Ubuntu: C:\VirtualBox>VBoxManage.exe guestcontrol MyVirtualMachineUbuntu exec --image "/usr/bin/firefox" --username bob --password password --wait-stdout --verbose Waiting for guest to start process ... Waiting for process to exit ... Exit code=1 (Status=500 [successfully terminated]) The /usr/bin/firefox command works when I run it in Ubuntu. Also, with guestcontrol, I can successfully call /bin/ls. But I can't actually get a major program like Firefox to run. Any ideas? Thanks.

Since we are re-positioning the product, we would like to delete roughly 50% (around 200) of the pages of the website. My questions, in terms of SEO are: Would it have a negative effect if Google suddenly sees the large page drop? Is it OK to provide a 301 to the start page of the website for all removed pages?

  We are crawling and downloading lots of companies' PDFs and trying to pick out the ones that are Annual Reports. Such reports can be downloaded from most companies' investor-relations pages. The PDFs are scanned and the database is populated with, among other things, the: Title Contents (full text) Page count Word count Orientation First line Using this data we are checking for the obvious phrases such as: Annual report Financial statement Quarterly report Interim report Then recording the frequency of these phrases and others. So far we have around 350,000 PDFs to scan and a training set of 4,000 documents that have been manually classified as either a report or not. We are experimenting with a number of different approaches including Bayesian classifiers and weighting the different factors available. We are building the classifier in Ruby. My question is: if you were thinking about this problem, where would you start?

• Installing VMware Worstation/Player 8.0.4 on Ubuntu 12.10 fails to load with Unable to start services

  I have been attempting to install this application for a few weeks without any success. I have installed and uninstalled the application and pathes with no change. I have even tried to load a VM in Virtualbox and install the application there to a base install of Ubuntu 12.10 and it still did not install. I have downloaded the patch and modified it to reflect the version of VMware Worstation and Player I am installing. I still receive the same error I saw in the first attempt to install the software. Which leads me to think that I am missing something. The error is: Unable to start services. See log file /tmp/vmware-root/modconfig-7674.log for details. I have the output of the log file if that will help. According to the dialogue box Virtual Network Device and VMware Blocking Filesystem fail to either load or execute. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Why I am getting following error when trying to start SDK manager?

  I have a 64 bit- 20 GB Ubuntu partition which has very less usable space. So I have put Eclipse in my Ubuntu and downloaded sdks to a folder in my another partition. So when I try to start sdk manager, I am getting the following error in my console: Unexpected exception 'Cannot run program "/media/Data/android-sdks/platform-tools/adb": error=13, Permission denied' while attempting to get adb version from '/media/Data/android-sdks/platform-tools/adb' I have run chmod recursively on android-sdks directory. If I change the address for sdks to Ubuntu partition, sdk manager starts successfully. Is there anything I can do other than increasing the partition size? Thanks

• Why won't my service start, and why doesn't upstart output any errors?

  I am trying to 'start gunicorn' as a service via upstart as user ale. I'm using gunicorn/flask on ubuntu 12.04 w/ init (upstart 1.5) Here is my /etc/init/gunicorn.conf setuid btw setgid flask script export HOME=/home/btw export WORKON_HOME=$HOME/.virtualenvs . $HOME/.virtualenvs/default/bin/activate cd $HOME/flask workon default gunicorn -c gunicorn.py bw:app end script It doesn't output anything other than gunicorn start/running, process 12992. If i then do 'status gunicorn' I get stop/waiting. any ideas on how to debug this? I tried following http://upstart.ubuntu.com/wiki/Debugging but it didn't help. If I do the following as user ale in the app's directory: 1. workon default 2. gunicorn -c gunicorn.py bw:app then Gunicorn runs fine. Here is ~/flask/gunicorn.py: bind = "0.0.0.0:8080" workers = 3 backlog = 2048 worker_class = "gevent" debug = True daemon = False pidfile ="/tmp/gunicorn.pid" log_level = "debug" accesslog = "/var/log/gunicorn/access.log" errorlog = "/var/log/gunicorn/error.log" user = "btw" group = "flask" Also, /var/log/error.log doesn't show anything new when I try to start the Gunicorn service. If I start it manually, it shows that the workers have been loaded, etc. Thanks for any help / suggestions!

• Windows Server 2008 can't start postgresql-x64-9.0 service: could not create any TCP/IP sockets

  After rebooting a Windows Server 2008 machine to apply system updates, we recently we began having some issues running PostgreSQL 9.0. When we noticed the problem, we reverted the Windows updates, but the issue persists: From services.msc, attempting to start the postgresql-x64-9.0 service fails. Half-way through starting the progress bar becomes very slow, and eventually responds with error 1053; "the service did not respond in a timely fashion." Interestingly enough, bringing up the task manager shows multiple instances of postgres.exe have been started, and looking at the log file shows: 2011-02-10 14:44:02 ESTLOG: database system is ready to accept connections I then tried killing the processes, and starting via the command-line (as the user postgres), but I receive a different error: C:/Program Files/PostgreSQL/9.0/bin/pg_ctl.exe start -N "postgresql-x64-9.0" -D "F:/SHARE/postgres" -w waiting for server to start............................................................... pg_ctl: could not start server ESTWARNING: could not create listen socket for "192.168.0.101" ESTFATAL: could not create any TCP/IP sockets The log file again indicates that the database is ready to accept connections. Also, using netstat indicates that no other processes are using port 5432; I can't think of any other obvious reason that opening the listen socket might fail. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
