• Tomcat startup fails with not a valid identifier

  I have tomcat 6.0.18 running on one server without a problem. With the exact same settings it fails to launch on my colleague's machine. He's even running from the same folder as me (I've stopped my copy while he tries to make it work) All we get when we fire off tomcat using bin/startup.sh is this: CATALINA_OPTS=-server -Xms768m -XX:+UseParallelGC -Xmx768m -XX:MaxPermSize=256m -XX:PermSize=128m -Djava.awt.headless=true: is not an identifier I had that definition in setenv.sh and moved it into startup.sh - same problem. Any suggestions? My brief look on google seem to indicate multiple IP address issues, but my server has two ethernet cards, and two IP addresses. Thanks.

• How to stop listening on an HTTP::Daemon port in Perl

  I have a basic perl HTTP server using HTTP::Daemon. When I stop and start the script, it appears that the port is still being listened on and I get an error message saying that my HTTP::Daemon instance is undefined. If I try to start the script about a minute after it has stopped, it works fine and can bind to the port again.   Hello everyone, In the 1990s, there was a fashion to put Javascript code directly into <a> href attributes, like this: <a href="javascript:alert('Hello world!')">Press me!</a> And then suddenly I stopped to see it. They were all replaced by things like: <a href="#" onclick="alert('Hello world!')">Press me!</a> For a link whose sole purpose is to trigger Javascript code, and has no real href target, why is it encouraged to use the onclick property instead of the href property?

• PHP Session Id changes between pages

  Hi All, I have a problem where i am losing the PHP session between 2 pages. The session_start() is included in a file called session-inc.php into every page requiring a session to be set. This works for all pages on the site except one particular page, member-profile.php. When this page is visited a new session with a different id (same session name) is set and used instead. A few more details: Session name is set manually All pages are on the same server under the same domain name If i put an additional session_start() above the include('session-inc.php') in the member-profile.php file, the session is carried over correctly I have tried setting the session_cookie_domain and session.session_name in the .htaccess, this worked for this domain but it stopped the session being passed over to out payment domain We are running apache 2.2.6 with php 5.2.5 Putting the session_start() above the include('session-inc.php') in the member-profile.php file is the quick and dirty fix for this problem, but i am wondering if anybody know why this would be happening.   We have a statement., that is inserting some rows in a temporary table (say e.g., 10 rows), while inserting 5th row, it has some issue with one of the column format and giving an error and then it stopped inserting the rows. What I want is, it should skip the error rows and insert valid rows. • Deny http access to a directory, allow access from WordPress plugin

  Hey. I need to prevent direct access to http://www.site.com/wp-content/uploads/folder/something.pdf through the browser. However the Download Monitor plugin I am using, which allows logged in users to download the file, needs to be able to work. Trying Order Allow,Deny Deny from all Allow from all but the download links do not now work... even though (I think) they are links produced by the script e.g. http://www.site.com/wp-content/plugins/download-monitor/download.php?id=something.pdf Enter that in the address bar and you correctly get a WordPress message, 'You must be logged in to download this file.' However, if someone knows the URL where the file was uploaded http://www.site.com/wp-content/uploads/folder/something.pdf they can still access it directly. I don't know how (guesswork?) they would find the direct URL anyway, but the client wants it stopped! Thanks for any help.

• Debug error in NetBeans

  I am running a C program in NetBeans (cygwin on windows). Generally for all C programs I have run in the past, while debugging, it stops and shows the line number of segmentation fault. But for this particular program, it does not show the line number and just stops and in the output tab, it shows prog stopped by SIGSEGV. I have tried conditional breakpoint, but it is not stopping. What could be the other conditions for error? • Django-admin.py not being recognized suddenly

  I tried starting a new Django project yesterday but when I did "django-admin.py startproject projectname" I got an error stating: "django-admin.py is not recognized as an internal or external command." The strange thing is, when I first installed Django, I made a few projects and everything worked fine. But now after going back a few months later it has suddenly stopped working. I've tried looking around for an answer and all I could find is that this typically has to do with the system path settings, however, I know that I have the proper paths set up so I don't understand what's happening. Does anybody have any idea what's going on?

• Windows azure deployment

  I just built a simple hello world windows azure service containing just one web role, I used visual studio 2008 and Windows azure tools for VS 1.2 I am pretty new to this and I have been trying to deploy an application all afternoon now. I'm in australia and deploying in the region Asia anywhere. I have pretty much followed the info provided on MSDN and it says uploaded 95% then after about ten minutes the deployment disappears. I have tried using the old windows azure developer portal and 30minutes later I can not access the service and it's status is either busy or stopped. I have the introductory offer for an extra small compute instance on the subscription I am deploying to. Can anyone with experience with windows azure elaborate on the subject of deploying apps and the status on my application, I am very keen to get into the platform and this issue has just about spoiled my weekend.

  Assume you want to read an image file in a common file format from the hard drive, change the color of one pixel, and display the resulting image to the screen, in C++. Which (open-source) libraries would you recommend to accomplish the above with the least amount of code? Alternatively, which libraries would do the above in the most elegant way possible? A bit of background: I have been reading a lot of computer graphics literature recently, and there are lots of relatively easy, pixel-based algorithms which I'd like to implement. However, while the algorithm itself would usually be straightforward to implement, the necessary amount of frame-work to manipulate an image on a per-pixel basis and display the result stopped me from doing it.

  I am using Android 2.2 (API Level 8). The camera is enabled in the manifest. When I try the camera icon provided by the emulator model, it runs for a few seconds showing a gray box moving around a black and white checkerboard, then dies with the error message: Sorry! • How to optimize frame rate in Flash/Actionscript?

  I'm building an application in Actionscript using Flash assets, and my frame rate becomes very low (~7 fps) when I attempt to render 20+ assets on the screen, even though most of those assets are stopped movie clips. I've tried setting .cacheAsBitmap to true, which helps a bit, but not enough. What else can I do to get the frame rate up? I've noticed that some movie clips seem to impact it more than others, but I'm not sure how to alter them to make them easier to render. Thanks!

• What are the main reasons against the Windows Registry?

  If i want to develop a registry-like System for Linux, which Windows Registry design failures should i avoid? Which features would be absolutely necessary? What are the main concerns (security, ease-of-configuration, ...)? I think the Windows Registry was not a bad idea, just the implementation didn't fullfill the promises. A common place for configurations including for example apache config, database config or mail server config wouldn't be a bad idea and might improve maintainability, especially if it has options for (protected) remote access. I once worked on a kernel based solution but stopped because others said that registries are useless (because the windows registry is)... what do you think?

  Hello all, I make a GET request to a CGI script and I get a 404 error. However, I am 100% sure that script is present and it has permissions: -rwxr-xr-x 1 apache apache 6520 Sep 7 03:01 uu_ini_status_audios.pl The request URL is: http://mysite.com/cgi-bin/uu_ini_status_audios.pl?tmp_sid=893facacc5dc392ad0f4c91e6a9e8d40&rnd_id=0.12266222834382812 The error I get: The requested URL /cgi-bin/uu_ini_status_audios.pl was not found on this server. This use to work for me before, but I think it stopped working after I restarted apache so maybe it means its a configuration I changed?? I checked the error logs for apache and php and nothing useful was found to help me with my problem! I appreciate any help on this!

• Java long task - Did it stop writing to file?

  I am writing a lot of data to a file, and while keeping my eye on the file it eventually stopped growing in size. Essentially my task is getting information from a database, and printing out all non-unique values in column A. Since there are many rows to the database table, and the database table is across my network, this is taking days to complete. Thus I'm concerned that since the file isn't growing, that it isn't actually writing to the file anymore. Which is odd, I have no "catch"'s in my code, so if there was a problem writing to file, wouldn't it have thrown an error?! Should I let the task complete (estimate 2-3 days from today), or is there something else that I don't know going on here making my application not write to the file?! my algorithm goes something like this Declare file Create new file Open file for writing get database connection get resultset from database for each row in the resultset - write column "A" to file - if row# % 100000 then write to screen "completed " + row# + " rows" when no more rows exist close file write to screen - "completed"

• Scala Eclipse IDE suddenly ignoring breakpoints

  I've been using Scala 2.8RC1 and Scala Eclipse plugin for 2.8 RC1 happily for a few days. However, last night after adding a couple jar files to my environment (apache http client jars) the debugger just stopped stopping at breakpoints in scala code. Java code stops fine at breakpoints. I tried creating a new mimimal scala app breakpoints don't stop. I've tried switching to sun-jre-1.6.0.20 from the openjdk-1.6.18 I had been using. I've switched to the scala 2.8 nightly and also eclipse plugin for scala nightly builds. No luck. I would greatly appreciate ideas for fixes. Rather frustrating as the initial experience with 2.8 was really great.

I'm at a loss to figure out what's going on. How can I find out what's causing this? Update: The system is a fully 64-bit system, so there should be no question of memory limitations due to 32-bit issues. Update2: As I mentioned in the original question, I've already tried tuning swappiness to all sorts of values, including 0. The result is always the same, with approximately 1.6 GB of memory remaining unused. Update3: Added top output to the above info.

• MySQL Import Database Error because of Extended Inserts

  Hello all, I'm importing a 400MB(uncompressed) MySQL database. I'm using BIGDUMP, and I am getting this error: Stopped at the line 387. At this place the current query includes more than 300 dump lines. That can happen if your dump file was created by some tool which doesn't place a semicolon followed by a linebreak at the end of each query, or if your dump contains extended inserts. Please read the BigDump FAQs for more infos. I believe the file does contain Extended Inserts, however I have no way to regenerate the database as it has been deleted from the old server. How can I import this database or convert it to be imported? Thanks for any help. Best Nick EDIT: It appears the only viable answer is to separate the extended inserts, but I still need help figuring out how to split the file as the answer below suggests. Please help. Thank you.

• Google App Engine dev_appserver can't find PIL (I've installed it)

  I recently upgraded my Google App Engine launcher on my Mac, running OSX 10.5.8, and afterwards my projects that work with images stopped working locally. It seems to be the same problem that I had when first using GAE locally to work with images, before I installed PIL. Here is the error I get: SystemError: Parent module 'PIL' not loaded I have PIL installed. When I run python normally, I can access it and work with it as expected. I also checked to ensure that dev_appserver.py was running the same version of Python. If I open the interpreter and type sys.version I get this back: 2.5 (r25:51918, Sep 19 2006, 08:49:13) [GCC 4.0.1 (Apple Computer, Inc. build 5341)] This is identical to what I get when I display the sys.version from my projects running through dev_appserver. Any thoughts on why dev_appserver can't find the PIL module? I have been banging my head against this for a bit. Thank you!

  Hi all, When I was doing some JQuery and PHP, I noticed the If-else patterns were treated differently and varied from one language to another. Say I got a simple input text field in a HTML and I was using some Ifs and Elses to check the value input into the text field. Text: <input type="text" name="testing"/> In JQuery, I got some codes as follows: if($("#testing").val()==1){ //do something } if($("#testing").val()=="add"){ //do something } else{ //do something } if($("#testing").val()=="hello"){ //do something } How come JQuery and PHP treated the Else statement differently? I mean in JQuery, the third If statement was still proceeded even if it had gone to the Else statement, but it stopped after the Else statement when I repeated the code in PHP script.

So, as it says to do in the documentation, I've added this code in my config/routes.rb file: resources :dimensions do collection do get "search" end end I've also defined in the dimensions_controller file: def search @dimensions = Dimension.all respond_to do |format| format.html # search.html.erb format.json { render json: @dimensions } end end I then stopped and restarted the rails server, but when I navigate to /dimensions/home, I'm still getting this error message: Couldn't find Dimension with id=search Also showing that my parameter is: {"id"=>"search"} So am I just missing another bit of code that gives the instruction to interpret /dimension/search as a collection action as opposed to the show action? • Multiple windows services in a single project = mystery

  I'm having a bizarre issue that I haven't seen before and I'm thinking it MUST be something simple that I'm not seeing in my code. I have a project with 2 windows services defined. One I've called DataSyncService, the other SubscriptionService. Both are added to the same project installer. Both use a timer control from System.Timers. If I start both services together, they seem to work fine. The timers elapse at the appropriate time and everything looks okay. However, if I start either service individually, leaving the other stopped, everything goes haywire. The timer elapses constantly and on the wrong service. In other words, if I start the DataSyncService, the SubscriptionService timer elapses over and over. ...which is obviously strange. The setup is similar to what I've done in the past so I'm really stumped. I even tried deleting both service and starting over but it doesn't seem to make a difference. At this point, I'm thinking I've made a simple error in the way I'm defining the services and my brain just won't let me see it. It must be creating some sort of threading issue that causes one service to race when the other is stopped. Here the code.... And it's the handler on the OPPOSITE service. Anybody see anything?
