12.04 64 bit: Keybord not responding for about 20 seconds at startup/beginning of session

I am running Ubuntu 12.04 64bit. When I get at the login screen and try to type the password for my user, I cannot type anything for about 20 seconds. After that, the keyboard starts responding and everything works fine. Mouse is responding normally as well as all buttons of the login interface (time/calendar, session selection (Unity/Unity 2D), etc.). What could be the reason for this behavior? How can I solve this temporary freeze of the keyboard so that I can type my password immediately without having to wait each time? Thanks for your time. EDIT: I tried auto login, but the problem is still there: the Desktop loads but even there, if I try to type something in the dash or anywhere else, I must wait about 20 seconds before I can actually start typing. Can the issue be related to some keyboard modules that get loaded little bit "too late"?

Making next and previous button in html [on hold]

An example of the list of item is : request0 request1 request2 request3 request4 Now I need to make next and previous buttons to navigate through this list. For example; If I am currently at request1 and hit the next button request2 should shown. If I hit the previous button it should show resquest0. This is my very first project in html and javascript. I have no ideas how to implement it.

How to install hardware drivers for my laptop

Everytime I change the OS I usually format my laptop. It is an HP tx-2 Touchsmart. It has a touchscreen and additional hardware that isn't working (i.e. volume control buttons and the network discovery) If I was on windows I would just download the hardware drivers from the HP website. How do I go about installing the software for the built-in hardware of my laptop? I am new to the community and I really want to get this computer working like it used to, to get the full Ubuntu experience. Please direct me, thank you.

Unity displays a black screen when connecting an external monitor

I upgraded my ubuntu from 10.10 to 11.04 and since that day I have been facing issues with Dual Monitor in Ubuntu. When I connect my second monitor during boot time, everything works fine. But when I use my laptop and try to connect a monitor when I am running Ubuntu, I face a weird black screen issue. To see what I mean, following is a screenshot of the same. Here are the problems that happen Desktop background goes away As you can see on the left hand side of the desktop, the right and top portions are black The usual buttons - power button, mail, volumne etc., on the top panel do not work as expected Plus it suddenly crashses at times. And a lot of n other issues associated with this. Is there any patch/release that has happened for these bugs or should I report it anywhere? Help needed.

Window manager not loading when gnome-classic starts

When I boot up or log into gnome-classic (no effects), windows don't have the frame around them that has the minimize and close buttons and all that. After that, there all sorts of issues - for example, when I open a new window, it's in the very top left corner, obscuring the menu on the gnome panel... just a whole bunch of minor annoyances. I can get things working by by loading the compiz fusion icon and then selecting to reload the window manager. Of course this is less than ideal. How do I get the window manager to load automatically? Update: It seems that I get no window manager whenever I load Compiz, even after logging in. So it looks like the problem is more generally with Compiz's window manager.

Stuck on Ubuntu startup screen (5 orange bullets)

I recently download Ubuntu 12.04 LTS onto my Macbook Pro 5-5. Everything worked seamlessly, save for the brightness control. I couldn't change the screen brightness from the hardware buttons, nor from the system preferences. To fix it, I used the instructions here: MacbookPro 5-5 LCD Brightness Control At #2, I restarted my laptop, only to see that it went straight to the Ubuntu Startup Screen, with the 5 orange dots (Usually they all startoff white, then turn orange to indicate progress). From there, I tried controlling the brightness from the keyboard, and it worked, but sadly, my computer is still stuck on the loading screen. (Yes, I have tried manually restarting it) Could you please help? Thank you in advance

Ubuntu One stuck and doing nothing

Ubuntu One has worked fine for me for several weeks and I now have 8.2 GB of files in the clouds. Then, last night, Ubuntu One stopped working. When I fire up System > Preferences > Ubuntu One, it tells me that I have 8.2 GB stored (13.2 %) and that my status is Unknown. I've tried to restart to no avail. I even tried to remove, followed by clearing the password keyring and starting over. Still nothing. I've run out of buttons to push.

Blogger Dynamic template sometimes broken

In all browsers (IE, Chrome, etc.) in my office and in all Blogger blogs using the dynamic template, I'm having this strange problem: No menu on the right side (except for the Subscribe button - other buttons are missing) plus no layout selection bar (top row). This problem is occasional, not happening reliably; any ideas? Update: whenever I get the menu problem with dynamic templates, I also seem to get a broken page (in Chrome, IE, etc) with simple templates - see second screenshot. Does anyone having this issue?

2D management game [on hold]

Very newbie question but I have a game idea in mind. It will be 2d and data centric, like football manager. However I am struggling to find a platform that would suit. I am an experienced line of business developer so am happy to write code, but I would like a platform that does some of the leg work for me so was avoiding OpenGL. I would also like to be able deploy to iOS, android, windows and OS X. What are the options? To be more clear, the game is not a normal platform or shooter type game, so game maker is likely to be way too basic and unity seems a little over the top (though I am not sure if the GUI options would fit?). The majority of the game is more like business screens just displaying data and having buttons to click. Are there options for this type of game (May help to look at football manager)?

UI Controls Copyright

I'm developing a cross-platform computer software. It will run on Windows and Mac OS X. For user experience reasons, I want it to have the same graphic on both platforms. I really like the Mac OS UI controls and I'd love to see them on the Windows version too. My question is: is it legal to "copy" UI components? I'm not going to copy icons or reproduce an existing Apple software. I would only "copy" some standard UI components such as Buttons, Progressbars, TreeView, ListView etc. You can see them here: http://i.stack.imgur.com/9YzYQ.png http://i.stack.imgur.com/MWR6B.jpg IMHO, they should not be copyrighted for two reasons: They are implicitly used by any Mac OS software There are a lot of Apps (for Windows and even Web-Apps) that are "inspired by" the Mac graphic. Prevent shutdown when rsnapshot is running

Since shutdowns during rsnapshot operation will lead to inconsistent/partial backups, I wonder how to delay the system shutdown while rsnapshot is active. The task is complicated by the fact that I need a solution which is compatible with non-expert users. I.e. I need to tell reliably to the user that he needs to wait until the process is finished and not to do a hard reset. Once this is the case shutdown should continue. A possible solution could be to replace the action of the window managers (mostly KDE) shutdown/restart/hibernate buttons by a script which first checks if rsync is active and shows a message if this is the case. But I do not know if this is possible in KDE.

Upgrade Ubuntu 11.10 to 12.10

To whoever can help, I want to update the ubuntu on my laptop to 12.10 from the current version 11.10, when i click on the update manager i get a partial update gui, if i click cancel on that i get the gui for update which has three buttons check, install updates and upgrade. remastersys created Live DVD hangs in "Choose a picture"

I used remastersys to create a Live DVD. Then, I used the Live DVD for the installation on another computer. The installation hung at the "Choose a picture" session. Both the "Back" and "Continue" buttons were disabled. It seemed like the installation was hung. I had to power-cycle the computer and reinstall from the Live DVD again. After the power-cycle, the installation from the Live DVD went successfully. Any idea why the installation hung at the "Choose a picture" session, and how to fix it without power-cycle the computer? Screen dims on opening certain applications on Macbook

I have ubuntu 11.10 installed on an old 2008 macbook. There is an issue of screen dimming that I didnt find anywhere else on the forums. The issue is that the screen is dimmed when I open certain applications (Firefox, Software Center) and this cannot be readjusted by the physical brightness buttons on the keyboard. I tried a bunch of things on the barely barely visible screen, and had no choice but to restart. This has happened everytime. Does anyone know how to solve this?

Confusion with Libgdx UI

I've started with Libgdx and am currently stumbling about trying to understand how to set up the interface. I have generated the base projects in Eclipse ( < proj-name ,< proj-name -android, < proj-name -desktop, < proj-name -html), and can get the program to display a simple background, play a looping sound file, and draw a tank. I have been having some problems implementing the UI though. I want to make a collapsible interface bar at the bottom of the screen that would contain buttons for movement, and selecting weapons. I'm confused since there appears to be several ways of doing this and the documentation (or tutorials explaining it) tend to be obsolete. How would one go about this? Use a stage for the bar and actors for the widgets? I'm a little lost on this.

can't download music files purchased with ubuntu one from rhythmbox

I used the link to Ubuntu One in Rhythmbox music player to purchase music. On the My Downloads page from Ubuntu One in the Rhythmbox it shows each of the files I purchased with and mp3 button and an AAC button. I should be able to download the files from these buttons but when I click on the button nothing happens - I was expecting a download manager to open up. I also was expecting the files to be transferred to my UbuntuOne account but don't see anything there either. (this is probably a second question) I am using 12.04 beta version of Ubuntu and the version of Rhythmbox that came with it: 2.96. Do I need to install something to be able to download these links? Thanks.

Can't edit/drag-and-drop widgets in QtCreator in Unity, Gnome3 - ok

I have QtCreator 2.4.1 (Qt 4.7.4) installed on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS x86. When I try to change UI - drag-and-drop any widget (buttons, label, etc.) it won't let me do it, like it's read-only. The icon when I drag is a circle with a line through it. I've found that problem in Unity and it's suggested to install Gnome3 shell - Can't edit/drag-and-drop widgets in QtCreator I tried to install Gnome3 and it works fine as expected. But the question, is there any other way to work proper with QtCreator in Unity?

How to fix Xubuntu LightDM Theme after installing unity.

After successfully installing Xubuntu 12.04.1 on my laptop, I decided to install Unity. That went OK but then I realized there was no themes. So then I installed the themes and artwork, and got a really bad surprise. My lightDM greeter was still Xubuntu like I wanted but the buttons where you choose the user are really tall and I have a purple computer as the icon above my computer name. How do I get back to the original Xubuntu configuration or edit the CSS while keeping Unity? I know where all of the files are but don't know which file to edit or which CSS property to modify. Login screen theme and background lost

I tried to change my LightDM background and theme in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS beta 2, changing /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/com.canonical.unity-greeter.gschema.xml file (I don't even know if it would work, but I couldn't find any other way), and I failed and restored original file. Also, durning the same session I installed gnome-shell-extensions package, but it didn't work either. (I didn't remove it) Now my login screen looks a bit coarse, without theme and background. (It looks like MS Windows 95 a bit - square buttons and text fields) My question is, how to repair login screen (or how to customize it propely) and how to make gnome-shell-extensions work.

Best keyboard to use with RollerMouse

I recently purchased a RollerMouse, which seems like an excellent way to eliminate pain caused by mousing. My question is: what good keyboard can other programmers recommend that would work well with it. I currently have a Microsoft ergonomic keyboard, but the curve and large wrist rest make it hard to use with the RollerMouse. By "good", I mean: Works with the RollerMouse (no wrist rest) Ergonomic (a slight curve or other features designed to be easy on your wrists/arms) Good for programming (that would be its primary use, no need for fancy media buttons or anything like that) Suggestions?

Is it possible to access the button click event by using the cursor? Why Google Analytics is displaying wrong landing pages?

I see all of my pages as Landing Pages in Google Analytics which cannot be true as I did not post those pages anywhere and I don't see any traffic hitting directly to that page. Also, I am using virtual page views on few buttons and I see those virtual pages as Landing pages too. For example, /click/request-a-quote 35000 views 35000 is too big a number to be ignored. Even if I ignore Virtual Pages Views, I see a lot of pages as Landing Pages that I am 100% sure that visitors ( atleast not so many users) are NOT hitting directly. Any advice, how to debug it? Gnome 3 panel and menus are all gone?

I am running Ubuntu 11.10 using gnome 3 shell. I have set my pc to automatically log into gnome shell so I do not see the login screen. Today I installed some updates and now the gnome panel is gone. When my pc logs in I ONLY see the background. There are no menus, nothing! Even the exit, minimize and maximise buttons in the top tight corner of the windows are gone. Also, alt+f2 also does not work. Any ideas how to fix this? I have a Nvidia Geforce 7900GTO with the Nvidia proprietary drivers installed. I have also used the recovery mode and removed some packages that apparently were broken. Still does not work.
