• Raspberry Pi + Azure + Mobile App

  Ongoing project idea. So this is of long running personal interest to build a Mobile App that shows you a push notification/pop up alert, when anyone calls your house phone. So I've taken delivery of a Raspberry Pi. I've ordered a new Crucible Technology Caller ID Box. (arriving soon). I have been writing/learning Python to implement the Listener software. This will in turn push xml messages up to Azure for final delivery via push notifications to an App. iOS app already written to receive the notifications/allow address book additions made up from phone numbers from incoming calls. So this is fusion, R-Pi, Azure, Hardware and iOS. Details to follow as this plan unfolds.

• How can I prototype my app better?

  A few weeks ago I saw a story about a master app designer showing how he worked with good old pen and paper to do effective prototyping before writing code. I'm unable to dig up that story (and I think it was a video) but if you could recommend any other useful resources I'd appreciate them. I know roughly what I want to build, but want a useful framework for thinking about how the screens should flow together. The app I want to build is for the iOS platform, but I think the video might have been about creating a web app. Thanks!

• Chromium web-app creation doesn't work in 12.10?

  If you create an application of a website in Chromium and choose "desktop", a .desktop file is created. In 12.04, you were able to move it to ~/,local/share/applications/ and then start it from the Dash or the launcher. In my fresh 12.10 installation, this doesn't work anymore. I think the line that is misinterpreted is Exec=/usr/bin/chromium-browser --app=http://buymeapie.com/. If you try to run it from a terminal, you get the following result: 20:32 ~ speter Exec=/usr/bin/chromium-browser --app=http://buymeapie.com/ bash: --app=http://buymeapie.com/: Datei oder Verzeichnis nicht gefunden (English: "File or directory not found"). • MP3 files downloaded from cloud incomplete/cut off (Android app)

  I noticed today on my phone (Droid X running Android 2.2.1) that when streaming the Ubuntu One app would skip to the next song before the previous one had finished. Looking into it, one of the mp3s downloaded from the server was only 2.5MB instead of 4.2MB as it shows on the server itself via one.ubuntu.com. It's happened with multiple tracks today (I remember it happening once the first time I used the app too but shrugged it off as a glitch). The app itself shows a star on the playlist item indicating the file was downloaded even though it was apparently cut off for some reason, perhaps lack of good cell coverage, or some sort of dropped connection. It seems like the latter may be happening and instead of showing an error or retrying it just stops and shows the download is complete.

  Hi Guys, I am not sure if this is correct place to ask this question. My apologies if it is not. I need to create a web app where people will sign up, call it main-app.com, when they sign up my code will generate a usersite.my-app.com, they will login and only be able to manage their mini site. My question is, is it correct to model this out by creating a table for site, a table for user, users belong to site and site has many users. Then I should create a content table that belongs to user AND site? is that right? Thanks Jeff

• Adobe Air apps on the Mac App Store?

  Before you chastise me for asking this, I have an Adobe Air app that has a lot of investment in it, and if there is a way to utilize the existing code-base in any way, it is worth considering. I have heard news reports in passing about Adobe creating some kind of tool to allow flash or air apps to be ported to native objective-c code, but the information found in google is mostly commentary on the one-time Apple blockade. My question(s) is/are this: Is it even possible, at any level, to use an existing Air app to create a Mac Store app? If possible, what are the resources I can use to accomplish this?

• Sending mail via Exchange, why am I being flagged as spam?

  Exchange 2007 uses direct DNS for all outgoing mail. Mail that is sent from our public IP (1.2.3.4 - this is the IP of my mailserver) is delivered to the spam folders for providers such as Comcast and yahoo. Currently, our SPF looks like this: v=spf1 ip4:1.2.3.4 mx a:mail.domain.com ?all MX: mail.domain.com.(10) The reverse DNS entry on our ISP is mail.domain.com for our IP The banner HELO response from our server is <220 mail.domain.com Our IP address is NOT blacklisted anywhere, and the Cisco Senderbase gives us a score of Good What is the reason our mail doesn't look legit?

• Is there any way to do "mail server parking"?

  I am managing a mail server, which will be temporarily closed for three or four days due to the data center maintenance. I want to find a solution to (completely or partly) solve the lost mails during this unavailable period. Because the data volume is huge, it is very hard to migrate it to other data center. One approach I think out is to setup a temporary mail server in other data center, and when new mail received, the mail server automatically sends a return mail to tell the sender "We are temporarily closed for three or four days. Please send the mail later or contact in other means." I am wondering is this approach possible with existed mail server ? Or something better available ? (free solution is preferred for it is only for temporary)

• Where the does sender's name in an e-mail come from and how can I change what name I send?

  At work, we use Google Apps to host our e-mail and Outlook to access it. I have a user who recently changed their name. I changed their e-mail address and their account name, but when they send e-mail their old name still appears, no matter whether they send it using Outlook or the gmail web client. For example, e-mail from them in the Gmail web client reads Oldname [email protected] instead of Newname [email protected]. I'm trying to make the user's new name show up when they send an e-mail. Where is the sender's name stored? Is it a part of the e-mail specification, stored in some header somewhere, or is it stored in the e-mail client? If it's possible, how do you change the sender's name in Gmail?

I have googled so many concept for building a multi-tenant app server but still don't understand how to really done it, what is the right way to do it and what is actually required to do this task. So I've come to this questions, Do I need a proxy server, dns masking, etc.. How to monitor each tenants activity What about server performance, load balancing, and scalability How to setup ssl certificate for each tenant what about application cache for each tenant Is it reliable to use the setup for production etc ...   Hi, Just installed ClearOS on a PC to act as our firewall firstly and then to act as an internal mailserver. My question is: Can i create a mailserver that then routes the mail through to our ISP mail server without having to contact the ISP and gain MX records etc..? • Christian Radio Locator iPhone app

  For the last three months or so I've been working on an iPhone (and iPad) app in my spare time. It all started when I took the kids to Minneapolis and had a hard time finding radio stations to listen to on the trip. I looked in the App Store for an app that would use my GPS to show me Christian radio stations nearby, but there wasn't one. So I decided to build my own. Using public information from the FCC and a few other sources, I built a database in Google docs that contains the frequency for all Christian radio stations, where the tower is located and how far the tower can reach. I also included any streaming audio information and other contact information like Facebook or Twitter that I could find. Google spreadsheets publish in JSON format (yes, really) and Xcode can automatically deserialize JSON into a properly formatted entity. This is one area that Xcode is far superior to C#. In a just a few lines of code, I can have a list of in-memory strongly typed objects from a web-based JSON feed. To accomplish the same thing natively in .NET would be much more work and wouldn't feel nearly as clean when it was said and done. The snazzy icon shown above was built by my very talented wife. She hasn't yet provided any feedback on the app's user interface, which is why it is so plain and boring. I used a navigation view controller and EGO pull to refresh table view to construct the main window. Pulling down to refresh initiates a GPS lookup, which queries the database for radio stations in range (yes, you can pass parameters to Google spreadsheets and get a subset back in JSON). Pulling up on the table extends the range of the search and includes stations that may not be close enough to get clear audio. This feature is not that intuitive and the next version contains an update to that functionality. Tapping a cell will show a detail view that displays additional information about the station. The user can click to view the station on a map, click to listen to an online stream (if available) or click to see the station's Facebook or Twitter pages. Swiping back and forth on the table changes the information that is displayed on the right hand side of the table cell. It scrolls through the city where the tower is located, how far the phone is from the tower, the range of the tower and in the next version a signal strength indicator. This was pretty easy to implement once I figured out how to assign the gesture recognizer delegate.  Tapping and holding on a cell will jump the user to the map view screen. Which is pretty cool, but very hard for even a power user to discover. To tackle the issue of discoverability, the next version has a series of instructions displayed at the bottom of the screen to show the user the various shortcuts. Once the user has performed the swipes and long holds, the instructions disappear. I've learned a lot developing this app. Spending over a decade exclusively in .NET made the learning curve a bit steep, but once I learned the structure and syntax of Objective-C, I've learned to appreciate the power and simplicity of it. Here are a few screenshots. I would really appreciate any feedback and especially iTunes reviews. Technically it is open source and a smart googler could probably find it. • App Stores&ndash;In All Things, Its Quality Over Quantity

  Everybody has an opinion about Windows 8. People love it, people hate it, people are meh about it, people are apparently buying it from Microsoft stores in NYC as if it was water before a natural disaster…if there’s one thing that Microsoft product launches do well, its the ability to bring out strong emotional responses. Over at eweek.com, Don Reisinger wrote about 5 good and bad things about Windows 8. Yes, another opinion piece on WIndows 8. I figured since this one had good and bad it might be worthwhile to read. I then came across #10 on his list, and figured “What the hell…might as well post a bit of a rant on Windows 8 myself!” Here’s #10: 10. Bad: Too few apps Unfortunately, Microsoft wasn’t able to get too many developers to start producing applications for its Windows 8 Store. Microsoft hasn’t yet released official numbers, but some have said that the marketplace has less than 8,000 programs. Considering Apple’s App Store has 100 times that, it’s about time Microsoft starts leaning on developers to get more programs into its store. Believe me, Microsoft *has* been leaning on developers to get apps into the store. I’ve been asked at least 5 or 6 times from 5 or 6 different friends at Microsoft about whether I was going to write a Windows 8 app. I think Microsoft felt they had to try and address the number of apps available in their marketplace, since some people (like Don) would draw comparisons to the number of apps in the Apple marketplace. I feel for Microsoft in this, since the number of apps in a marketplace are an empty stat. Quality of Quantity I have an iPad that my family (wife, 10yo daughter, 3yo daughter) use. We all have our own apps installed on it. In addition, my wife has an iPhone 4S that she also installs apps on. As someone who gets asked by his kids often whether they can buy/download an app, the vast majority of the vast catalogue of iOS marketplace apps are crap! Do you realize how many “free” games are out there, only to really be not-free because you have to purchase in-game content to make the game actually playable? And how about searching – with such a vast array of apps and such high numbers of craptastic ones, trying to find something is incredibly difficult and can be frustrating. I would rather see that Microsoft has 8000 high quality apps in their store at launch, instead of 800000 that were mostly junk. Too Few Apps?! And seriously, 8000 is not a small number. How many iOS apps have I actually bought between the iPad and iPhone? I’ll be generous and say 30…heck, let’s round it up to 40. It’s not like I have 10,000 apps installed on my iPad, nor will that ever happen! So if people have, at the *launch* of a new platform ecosystem, EIGHT THOUSAND apps to choose from, I don’t see that as a fail at all! It should be noted that most of the most common apps (Netflix, Skype, etc.) are available for Windows 8 at launch – I guess I’ll have to wait a few weeks for My Pony Ranch and all its clones to start showing up; pity. Let’s Check Back in a Year So look, let’s check back in a year’s time and see what the app store looks like. My hope is that Microsoft doesn’t continue to push quantity over quality. Even knowing the optics that # of apps in the store carries and the pressure to catch Apple and Android marketplaces, I hope Microsoft avoids the scenario where there’s a good percentage of apps in the Windows Store that are utter rubbish and finding the gems will be cumbersome. But if that happens, we can thank guys like Dan who raised the false issue of app count at the launch for it.

  Process-on-the-Fly #2 - Process is the New App The next generation of business process management and business rules management tools is so powerful that it actually can be seen as the successor to custom-built applications. Being able to define detailed process, flows, decision trees and business helps on both the business and IT side to create powerful, differentiating solutions that would have required extensive custom coding in the past. Now much of the definition can be done ‘on the fly,’ using visual models and (semi) natural language in the nearest proximity to the business. Over the years, ERP systems have been customized to enter organization-specific functionality into the ERP application. This leads to better support for the business, but at the same time involves higher costs for maintenance, high dependency on the personnel involved in this customization, long timelines to deliver change to the system and increased risk involved in upgrading the ERP system. However, the best of both worlds can be created by bringing back the functionality to out-of-the-box usage of the ERP system and at the same time introducing change and flexibility by means of externalized 'Process Apps' in direct connection with the ERP system. The ERP system (or legacy bespoke system, for that matter) is used as originally intended and designed, resulting in more predictable behavior of the system related to usage and performance, and clearly can be maintained in a more standardized and cost-effective way. The Prrocess App externalizes the needed functionality into a highly customizable application outside the ERP for which it is supported by rules engines, task inboxes and can be delivered to different channels. The reasons for needing Process Apps may include the following: The ERP system just doesn't deliver this functionality in a specific industry; the volatility of changing certain functionality is high; or an umbrella type of functionality across (ERP) silos is needed. An example of bringing all this together is around the hiring process for a new employee at a university. Oracle PeopleSoft HCM could be used as the HR system to store all employee details. In the hiring process, an authorization scheme is involved for getting the approval to create a contract for the employee-to-be. In the university world, this authorization scheme is complex and involves faculties/colleges (with different organizational structures) and cross-faculty organizational structures. Including such an authorization scheme into PeopleSoft would require a lot of customization. By adding a handle inside PeopleSoft towards an externalized authorization Process App, the execution of the authorization of the employee is done outside the ERP: in a tool that is aimed to deliver approval schemes via a worklist-type of application. The Process App here works as an add-on to the PeopleSoft system, but can also be extended to support the full lifecycle of the end-to-end hiring process with the possibility to involve multiple applications. The actual core functionality is kept in the supporting ERP systems, while at the same time the Process App acts as an umbrella function to control the end-to-end flow and give insight into the efficiency of the end-to-end process. • How do I use FB.Connect.streamPublish in an iframe facebook app?

  I'm making a simple iframe-based facebook app. I have the following code to size my iframe: FB_RequireFeatures(["Connect"], function(){ FB.XdComm.Server.init('/xd_receiver.htm'); FB.CanvasClient.startTimerToSizeToContent(); FB.CanvasClient.syncUrl(); }); I want to add a link that will display a popup which will allow the user to post an app-defined image/link to the user's wall. To get things working initially, I tried just using the following code on a click event: FB.Connect.streamPublish(''); However, nothing happens. I've tried adding: FB.init(<?=API_KEY?>, '/xd_receiver.htm'); both inside the FB_RequireFeatures function, before it, after it... no luck. Nothing happens. No errors are thrown. Nothing. Any ideas?
