• Using hg repository as web site

  This is somewhat related to my security question here. Is it a bad idea to use an hg / mercurial repository for a live website? If so, why? Furthermore, we have dev, test and production installations of our website, like dev.example.com, test.example.com and www.example.com. If it's a bad idea to use a repository for a live/production website, would it be OK to use an hg repository for the dev and test sites? I'm also concerned about ease of deployment. We have technical and less technical co-workers who will be working with the site. The technical guys (software engineers) won't have any problem working with the command line or TortoiseHG. I'm more concerned about the less technical guys (web designers). They won't be comfortable working on the command line, and may even find TortoiseHG daunting. These guys mostly upload .css files and images to the server. I'd like for these files (at least the .css files) to be under version control, but I want this to be as transparent as possible for the non technical guys. What's the best way to achieve this? Edit: Our 'site' is actually a multi-site CMS setup with a main repository and several subrepositories. Mock-up of the repository structure: /root [main repository containing core files and subrepositories] /modules [modules subrepository] /sites/global [subrepository for global .css and .php files] /sites/site1 [site1 subrepository] ... /sites/siteN [siteN subrepository] Software engineers would work in the root, modules and sites/global repositories. Less technical guys (web designers) would work only in the site1 ... siteN subrepositories.

I want to do it using a lambda expression. I am aware what I typed above will compile and will bring back all Persons matching the search criteria with their addresses and each addresses' mailbox eager loaded, but it's in a string which irritates me. • What is wrong with this mail header text?

  The following $header is being sent via PHP's mail($to,$subject,$content,$header) command. The mail arrives and appears to have an attachment. But the mail text is empty as is the file. I think this has something to do with line spacing but I can't see the problem. I have tried putting the contents (between the boundaries) in $contents rather than appending it to $header. It doesn't make a difference. Any thoughts? • UrlHelper and ViewContext inside an Authorization Attribute

  I have a scenario that I haven't been able to solve: I'm toying around with creating my own custom authorization attribute for mvc. The main bit of functionality I would like to add is to have the ability to change where the user gets redirected if they are not in a certain role. I don't mind that the system sends them back to the login page if they're not authenticated, but I would like to choose where to send them if they are authenticated but not allowed to access that action method.   Question A. Given 1. A string in rich text format that may have paragraph, tabs, space, line break, indentation, (or even image?) 2. A width for the word wrapping rich text control/editor How do I know the height of the content after it have performed all the word wrapping? Is there something like int MeasureRichTextHeightAfterWordWrap(string aRichTextContent, int aWidth)? Otherwise how does those rich text control know how much to autosize? Do I have to actually place the content on a dummy rich text control and get its height afterwards? Question B. Similar to question A but in plain text onto a plain text memo/control/editor. And manually draw string with manually calculated indentations, breaks, word wrappings. Is it easier or harder?

  I'm attempting to take an NSImage and convert it to a string which I can write in an XML document.   I'm trying to get a deeper understanding of laziness in Haskell. I was imagining the following snippet today: data Image = Image { name :: String, pixels :: String } image :: String -> IO Image image path = Image path <$> readFile path The appeal here is that I could simply create an Image instance and pass it around; if I need the image data it would be read lazily - if not, the time and memory cost of reading the file would be avoided: main = do image <- image "file" putStrLn $ length $ pixels image But is that how it actually works? How is laziness compatible with IO? Will readFile be called regardless of whether I access pixels image or will the runtime leave that thunk unevaluated if I never refer to it? If the image is indeed read lazily, then isn't it possible I/O actions could occur out of order? For example, what if immediately after calling image I delete the file? Now the putStrLn call will find nothing when it tries to read.

  Hey there! I'm having a little problem setting up my webshop project. Thing is, I have a User() superclass and two subclasses, PrivateUser and BusinessUser. Now, I'm not quite sure how to get my head around storing this relationship via hibernate. For the purpose of this question, the User() class contains only one field: String address; the PrivateUser contains: String firstName; and the BusinessUser contains: String CompanyName; Each field has its getter and setter. As is right now, I would only store and be able to get firstName and companyName. When I fetch a user from my DB using Hibernate I would get a PrivateUser/BusinessUser with a null address. Bottom line is, could someone point me towards a useful tutorial or better yet show a similar example code? Thanks!

• WCF issues with KnownType for Dictionary

  Hi, I have a service that implements the following DataMember: [DataMember] public Dictionary<string, List<IOptionQueryResult>> QueryResultItems { get; set; } I have the class "OptionQuerySingleResult" which inherits from IOptionQueryResult. Now, I understand that I need to make the OptionQueryResult type "known" to the Service and thus tried to add the KnownType in various ways: [KnownType(typeof(Dictionary<string, OptionQuerySingleResult[]>))] [KnownType(typeof(Dictionary<string, List<OptionQuerySingleResult>>))] [KnownType(typeof(OptionQuerySingleResult)] However, none of those approaches worked and on the client side I'm either getting that deserialization failed or the server simply aborted the request, causing a connection aborted error. Does anyone have an idea on what's the proper way to get this to work? I'd like to add, the if I change the QueryResultItems definition to use the concrete type, instead of the interface, everything works just fine. Thanks, Tom

• printf and Console.WriteLine - problems with Console.SetOut?

  i have a bunch of Console.WriteLines in my code that I can observe at runtime. I communicate with a native library that I also wrote. I'd like to stick some printf's in the native library and observe them too. I don't see them at runtime however. I've created a convoluted hello world app to demonstrate my problem. When the app runs, I can debug into the native library and see that the hello world is called. The output never lands in the textwriter though. Note that if the same code is run as a console app then everything works fine.   I'm storing a string in mysql with the ENCRYPT() function. I want to fetch a row where that string is matched, but the new ENCRYPT() call gives me a different value, so they never match. This is expected as i'm not (and can't) give it a consistent salt: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/encryption-functions.html#function_encrypt If no salt argument is given, a random value is used. This is the query i'm running that returns empty: SELECT * FROM `table` WHERE ENCRYPT('string') = `enc_string` I know this is possible because this is used by a 3rd party app, but I can't find their query where they do this. Is there a way to force ENCRYPT to use the previous salt, or predict it?

  I have a file in a different folder I want to rename in perl, I was looking at a solution earlier that showed something like this: for (<backup.rar>) { my $file = $_; my $new = $_ 'backup'. @test .'.rar'; rename $file, $new or die "Error, can not rename $file as $new: $!"; } however backup.rar is in a different folder, I did try putting "C:\backup\backup.rar" in the < above, however I got the same error. C:\Program Files\WinRARperl backup.pl String found where operator expected at backup.pl line 35, near "$_ 'backup'" (Missing operator before 'backup'?) syntax error at backup.pl line 35, near "$_ 'backup'" Execution of backup.pl aborted due to compilation errors. I was using # Get time my @test = POSIX::strftime("%m-%d-%Y--%H-%M-%S\n", localtime); print @test; To get the current time, however I couldn't seem to get it to rename correctly. What can I do to fix this? Please note I am doing this on a windows box.

• valueOf() vs. toString() in Javascript

  In Javascript every object has a valueOf() and toString() method. I would have thought that the toString() method got invoked whenever a string conversion is called for, but apparently it is trumped by valueOf(). For example, the code var x = {toString: function() {return "foo"; }, valueOf: function() {return 42; }}; window.console.log ("x="+x); window.console.log ("x="+x.toString()); will print x=42 x=foo This strikes me as backwards .. if x were a complex number, for example, I would want valueOf() to give me its magnitude (so that zero would become special), but whenever I wanted to convert to a string I would want something like "a+bi". And I wouldn't want to have to call toString() explicitly in contexts that implied a string. Is this just the way it is?
