• Build a user's profile directory on creation in batch

  I have a batch script that I use when I set up new Windows 7 PCs that creates a user based on a variable, creates a folder on their desktop, then shares it: @echo off SET /p unitnumber="Enter unit number: " net user unit%unitnumber% password /add /expire:never MD "C:/Users/unit%unitnumber%/Desktop/Accounting #%unitnumber%" runas /user:administrator "net share "Accounting#%unitnumber%"="C:/Users/unit%unitnumber%/Desktop/Accounting#%unitnumber"" I discovered that the share that is created is overwritten when the newly created user first logs on, because Windows creates builds their profile directory at that time. Is there any way to initiate a build of a user's profile directory in the batch file just after creating the it? The only thing that looks useful is the /homedir:pathname switch for the net user command, but I believe that option assumes the directory already exists. Other than that web research hasn't been fruitful. I'd be to use whatever to get this done as long as I can incorporate/launch it from the batch. Any suggestions?

  In an effort to get ARM developers testing Java SE 8 before the scheduled release later this year a Java SE 8 Developer Preview Release for ARM has been made available. This release has been tested on the Raspberry PI but should work on other ARM platforms. In addition to the new Java SE features, this release provides specific support of hard float GPU on the Raspberry PI. The support for hard float GPU has been anticipated by a number of developers. Additionally, this release includes support of an optimized JavaFX. Specific configurations of JDK 8 on ARM are defined below: Java FX is supported on ARM architecture v6/7 (hard float) Supported platforms without Java FX: ARM architecture v6/7 (hard float) ARM architecture v7 (VFP, little endian) ARM architecture v5 (soft float, little endian) Linux x86 The download page includes setup instructions for a Raspberry PI device as well as demos and samples. • Do I need to run a verfication on LTO tape backups even though the drives themselves perform verification as they write?

  We have an LTO-3 Tape drive in a Dell media library that we use for our tape backups. The article about LTO on Wikipedia states that: LTO uses an automatic verify-after-write technology to immediately check the data as it is being written, but some backup systems explicitly perform a completely separate tape reading operation to verify the tape was written correctly. This separate verify operation doubles the number of end-to-end passes for each scheduled backup, and reduces the tape life by half. What I would like to know is, do I need my backup software (Backup Exec in this case) to perform a verify on these tapes or is the verify-after-write technology inherent in LTO drives sufficient? I would also be curious if Backup Exec understands the verify-after-write technology enough to alert me if that technology couldn't veryify the data or will it just ignore it making it useless anyway since even if the drive detecs a problem I would never know about it.

  Recently, I have made a number of USB sticks to install OS's (several Linux flavors, BSD, Windows) from, on machines that didn't have CD drives. Now, I would prefer to not overwrite the install USB sticks all the time, since it's handy to have them, but neither do I want to pile up USB sticks that I only need every 6 months. It would be great to have a bootable USB stick that fires up some minimal system, lets you choose an ISO image and then reboots from there. How would I go about this? Do I use some minimal Linux? Is there some kind of modified / specialized boot loader? Can I set up GRUB to do this? Should I use virtualization?

  I'm working on a dice mechanic/resolution system based off of the Ghost/Echo (hereafter shortened to G/E) tabletop RPG. Specifically, since G/E can be a little harsh with dealing out consequences and failure, I was hoping to soften the system and add a little more player control, as well as offer the chance for players to evolve their characters into something unique, right from creation. So, here's the mechanic: Players roll 2d12 against the two statistics for their character (each is a number from 2-11, and may be rolled above or below depending on the nature of the action attempted, rolling your stat exactly always fails). Depending on the success for that roll, they add dice to the pool rolled for a modified G/E style action. The acting player gets two dice anyhow, and I am debating offering a bonus die for each success, or a single bonus die for succeeding on both of the statistic-compared rolls. One the size of the dice pool is set, the entire pool is rolled, and the players are allowed to assign rolled dice to a goal and a danger. Assigned results are judged as follows: 1-4 means the attempted goal fails, or the danger comes true. 5-8 is a partial success at the goal, or partially avoiding the danger. 9-12 means the goal is achieved, or the danger avoided. My concerns are twofold: Firstly, that the two-stage action is too complicated, with two rolls to judge separately before anything can happen. Secondly, that the statistics involved go too far in softening the game. I've run some basic simulations, and the approximate statistics follow: 2 dice (up to) 3 dice (up to) 4 dice failure ~33% ~25% ~20% partial ~33% ~35% ~35% success ~33% ~40% ~45% I'd appreciate any advice that addresses my concerns or offers to refine my simulation (right now the first roll is statistically modeled as sign(1d12-1d12), where 0 is a success).

• Staggering java linux process startup to prevent OOM

  I am running a number of java processes on a single Linux machine. From a memory and computing standpoint, everything is fine when things are static. However, periodically we use a configuration management package up upgrade the jar or war files, and restart the java process. The problem is, that is restarts them all relatively quickly, and so we get 10 or so java VMs restarting all at the same time (we use daemontools for the service stops/starts), which wreaks havoc on the machine, in terms of OOMs or just really slow. This is because it's spawning the JVM 10x at the same time. Other than trying to stagger the startups, is there a smarter way of handling this? Maybe a sysctl tuning performance parameters, or a JVM parameter?

• How to help FGLRX detect a device

  I have HD 4850 card, Ubuntu 12.10 and installed legacy drivers using makson96 ppa. The issue is, that FGLRX can not detect my device and loads vesa bios. I had the same problem on ubuntu 11.10, 12.04 versions. I want to manually help fglrx find a matching device to load as it shoudld do. • How to make routes on a windows 7 laptop persistent?

  I have a number of (windows 7) laptops that normally connect via wireless. We also have a wired network for special purposes. When one of these laptops plugs in to the wired network, at the moment, it makes the wired network the default route. Instead, I would like it to keep the wireless network the default, and route only 10...* through the wired. I can achieve this with: route delete 0.0.0.0 IF 22 route add 10.0.0.0 ... IF 22 (where IF 22 is the wired network interface). But how can I get this to stick? Currently, if the wired network is unplugged then re-plugged, it grabs the default route again. So I want a way of making the wireless network not get the default route, and to make the 10...* network persistent. Is there a hook to run commands after a network connection is established in windows? In linux I would use post-up hooks.

• Can I automatically add a new host to known_hosts ?

  Here's my situation; I'm setting up a test harness that will, from a central client, launch a number of virtual machine instances and then execute commands on them via SSH. The virtual machines will have previously unused hostnames and IP addresses, so they won't be in the ~/.ssh/known_hosts file on the central client. The problem I'm having is that the first SSH command run against a new virtual instance always comes up with an interactive prompt: The authenticity of host '[hostname] ([IP address])' can't be established. RSA key fingerprint is [key fingerprint]. Are you sure you want to continue connecting (yes/no)? Is there a way that I can bypass this and get the new host to be already known to the client machine, maybe by using a public key that's already baked into the virtual machine image ? I'd really like to avoid having to use Expect or whatever to answer the interactive prompt if I can.

  I just got a salary negotiation this morning (I passed three interviews last 3 weeks), and it was like a game. I was stubborn with my expectation, or that number, or I leave. OK, to be honest, it's not about money, but I, a not-very-experienced developer, want to see how much the employer pays me, and it was fun. And at last, my employer gave me this: "OK, * $, but with two conditions, first, you get your spoken skill improved (English is not my native), and second, you got MCPs before the end of the year". He asked me to get 3 MCP certificates. The company will buy any books that necessary to the exam, but I must read them at free time, take and pass the exams . If I not get them, my employer will not kick me out, but, salary discussion will be harder, for me. I accepted that offer, I thought it's good enough. But I wonder, is it usual? If you're an employer, have you ever given that offer to a candidate? If you're an employee, have you ever got, or will you accept an offer like that?

  I'm writing a few scripts that I am using to integrate with bamboo for some continuous integration improvements and I've run into a bit of a snag. I'm currently trying to run a psexec command that installs the latest build on the remote machine but I dont necessary know the revision number. For example, the remote exe file could be Installer-3.1.xxxxx.exe where the xxxxx changes. I tried running the command with Installer-3.1.*.exe but it takes it as literal in Windows. I'm not overly familiar with Windows command prompt and am more used to Linux at this moment.

  Hi, I need to schedule a task in Windows Server 2003 that executes this script that deletes files older that n days in the specified folder. The script needs 3 parameters: %1 path to folder where files need to be deleted %2 file names (es. *.log) %3 number of days @echo off forfiles -p %1 -s -m %2 -d -%3 -c "cmd /c del /q @path" The script works fine if the first parameter has no spaces inside. This is an example of parameters that work: "C:\Program Files\SCRIPT\DeleteFilesOlderThanXDays.cmd" N:\FOLDER\FOLDER *.zip 60 This is an example that does not work: "C:\Program Files\SCRIPT\DeleteFilesOlderThanXDays.cmd" N:\Program Files\LOG *.zip 60 This does not work too: "C:\Program Files\SCRIPT\DeleteFilesOlderThanXDays.cmd" "N:\Program Files\LOG" *.zip 60 I think it would be a quotes problem but I can't figure out the solution. • Ubuntu 10.04 User Interface errors

  Hi Guys Using Ubuntu 10.04 Beta on a Sony Vaio laptop (slightly old PCG-4n7M). It was working wonderfully until this morning. After updating and upgrading the login screen images gave broken image icons, then on logging in UI was replaced with just the cmd shell. All menus are gone. I have tried to reconfigure xserver-xorg and that doesn't work. Reinstalling doesn't either. I have tried a number of other attempts. What is weird is that I can launch graphical applications from the cmd line. such as firefox or google-chrome. and they work but the UI is simplified or broken (no resizing, closing, minimizing). I am a bit lost on how to fix this error. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know

  Unknown to me, one of the kids has installed LogMeIn Hamachi on his PC so that he can access and play on his pal's Minecraft server, and vice versa. One of the things I did was disable the Client for Microsoft Networks and File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks on the Hamachi NIC in Windows 7's Network Connections. However, my lack of fu when it comes to these types of services is leaving me feeling a little uncomfortable about him using this. Is there anything I should be worried about here? For example, can his friends access our local LAN (which has a number of NAS boxes with unsecured shares) and get up to no good?

• Is there a USB ethernet (wired) adapter that is really compatible with Windows 7 64-bit?

  I've checked the Windows 7 compatibility site, and it lists a fair few USB ethernet (wired, not wireless) adapters that should work with Windows 7 64-bit. However, whenever I Google for the model number and Windows 7 64-bit, there's many forum posts claiming that the devices actually don't work with 64-bit (but do work with 32-bit). I've actually also found this with the LUPO USB ethernet adapter; works with 32-bit win7, but not 64-bit (no drivers available). So is there anyone out there who is 100% certain, and have actually used successfully, a 64-bit win7 capable USB ethernet adapter?

  PROBLEM: We have N physical machines(PMs) each with ram Ri, cpu Ci and a set of currently scheduled VMs each with ram requirement ri and ci respectively Moving(Migrating) any VM from one PM to other has a cost associated which depends on its ram ri. A PM with no VMs is shut down to save power. Our target is to minimize the weighted sum of (N,migration cost) by migrating some VMs i.e. minimize the number of working PMs as well as not to degrade the service level due to excessive migrations. My Approach: Brute Force approach is choosing the minimum loaded PM and try to fit its VMs to other PMs by First Fit Decreasing algorithm or we can select the victim PMs and target PMs based on their loading level and shut down victims if possible by moving their VMs to targets. I tried this Greedy approach on the Data of Baadal(IIT-D cloud) but It isn't giving promising results. I have also tried to study the Ant colony optimization for dynamic VM consolidating but was unable to understand very much. However, it is fixed, so I have to figure it out how to display it automatically on center regardless of the number of digits while updating for the new highscore. I have used the LibGDX preferences very well though to save and load records for the highscore.

• Windows 8 Store App Crash Logs

  I was recently working on a Windows 8 app, and the application was crashing occasionally.  When resuming the application, the app would crash and close immediately without providing any feedback or information on what went wrong.  The crash was very difficult to reproduce, and I could never get the crash to occur when I was debugging through Visual Studio.  My app was crashing, and I had no idea what was going wrong!  HELP!!! After doing some digging, I found that when a Windows 8 Store App crashes, an error is logged in Windows Administrative Events.  You can view the details of any app crash by launching the Event Viewer and selecting Administrative Events under Custom Views.  The Source of the error will be listed as AppHost.  AppHost is the process that runs your Windows 8 Store App.  The error details contain all the information you would expect to find, including a stack trace and line numbers.   Windows 8 Tip:  A shortcut for launching the Event Viewer in Windows 8.  Right click on the bottom left corner of your desktop (where you normally click to go to the Start Screen).  A menu will appear with shortcuts to a number of common system tasks such as Event Viewer, Task Manager, Command Prompt, and Device Manager.

• Google Analytics Visitors drop-off for certain region of site only

  I have an issue with the tracking on my site where I have seen a dramatic drop off of visitors to the site from a certain region. I have four regions on my site at the moment, these are UK, EU, US and RoW (Rest of the World). The UK, EU and US regions are unaffected, only the RoW region suffers this drop-off. I have included a screen shot below from my GA account, which shows this effect. My GA code, which is included on every page on the site is below. I have changed the UA account number intentionally for this example. There have been no changes made to the GA account or the tracking code in a live environment for some considerable time, but for some reason I am seeing the drop-off for this region only. • Windows command line ZIP extraction with checksum or similar ?

  What I need to do, at the command line, is: Extract the contents of a a ZIP archive. Change an arbitrary number of the extracted files. Repeat step 1, but because it is a huge archive, only extract the archived copies of the files changed in step 2 which is much faster. Ideally the extraction in step 3 would do something like a checksum on the files on disk and only extract those where the file in the archive has a different checksum. Or maybe compare the date changed stamp on the disk file. At the minute I use pkzipc.exe which is the command-line version of PkZip. I can't see a way to do it with this though. You can extract files from the archive that are newer than the disk files, but what I want is the opposite of that in a sense.

• Help with OpenVPN setup on Windows Server 2003

  Hi all, Just wondering if someone can assist me further with the set-up of OpenVPN on my Windows Server 2003. I have configured Win Server as per the following guide: http://tinyurl.com/kxusv and I'm now at the stage of Creating the config files. I have a few questions that I need some assistance with. My server IP is 192.168.1.10 and my routers IP address is 192.168.1.1 (the router is a Netgear DGN2000). I have edited the server.ovpn file as per the following: push "dhcp-option DNS X.X.X.X" # Replace the Xs with the IP address of the DNS for your home network (usually your ISP's DNS) push "dhcp-option DNS X.X.X.X" # A second DNS server if you have one to include my ISP DNS and I have not edited anything else. Now my issue is with the client1.opvpn file as per the below: client dev tap #dev-node MyTAP #If you renamed your TAP interface or have more than one TAP interface then remove the # at the beginning and change "MyTAP" to its name proto udp remote YOURHOST.dyndns.org 1194 #You will need to enter you dyndns account or static IP address here. The number following it is the port you set in the server's config route 192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0 vpn_gateway 3 #This it the IP address scheme and subnet of your normal network your server is on. Your router would usually be 192.168.1.1 So, should the first line be the static IP of the machine that I'm applying this to? The IP address of the server (192.168.1.10) or something else? I'm also stuck on the second part 'route 192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0 vpn_gateway 3' Should this be the router IP which is 192.168.1.1 and the subnet is 255.255.255.0 and that is all I need to alter? The final part that I'm stuggling with is Configuring the router. Basically I have a Netgear DGN2000 and as it mentions that the router should be configured to port forward port 1194 to the server’s IP address of 192.168.1.150 all I have been able to do is in 'Firewall Rules' and on 'Inbound Services', set the Service to 'Any(ALL) and Send to LAN Server point to 1923.168.1.150. I'm not sure if this is correct? It is the following stage of the help guide that I'm struggling with and really need some help with: You need to make sure the port you configured OpenVPN to listen on is forwarded on the router to the IP address of your server. On the WRT54G, port forwarding is configured in the “Applications & Gaming” section. Enter 1194 for the port, UDP for the protocol, and 192.168.1.150 for the IP address. Make sure the entry is enabled and then save the setting. Next, you need to add an entry to the router’s Routing Table. This will enable the router to properly route requests from the clients to the TAP interface of the server. On the WRT54G you would go to the “Setup” page and then the “Advanced Routing” section. Enter the follwing info to make the entry: Enter Route Name: openVPN Destination LAN IP: 192.168.10.0 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.252 Default Gateway: 192.168.1.150 Interface: LAN & Wireless Once the info has been typed in make sure you save the setting. Can anyone possibly guide me through setting this part up with my Netgear router. I see that once I have these 2 parts complete I'm there so I would really appreciate someone walking me through what is required in completing this. Much appreciated.

• Are VLANs necessary for my environment?

  Greetings. I'm the new network manager for a school. I've inherited an environment made up of several Windows servers, about 100 Windows clients, ten printers, one Cisco router, six Cisco switches, and 1 HP switch. Also, we're using VoIP. There are four floors in our building. The hosts on each floor are assigned to a separate VLAN. An office on the first floor has its own VLAN. All the switches are on their own VLAN. The IP phones are on their own VLAN. And the servers are on their own VLAN. For the number of hosts on the network, are all these VLANs really buying me anything? I'm new to the VLAN concept but it seems overly complicated for this environment. Or it's genius and I just don't get it. Any thoughts? Thanks, Jeff
