• Leave Windows Session Logged On

  Is a bad idea for any reason to leave accounts logged onto Windows remote desktop sessions? So instead of logging off, just closing the session so it locks. In this case, the limited number of remote desktop connections is not an issue. I am just wondering if anyone has seen sessions leak memory over time or maybe security issues with doing this, etc... I could see if programs were left open they might suck up and or leak memory, but has anyone seen this with Microsoft software such as Control Panels, Management Consoles, and Exchange System Administrator?

• How can browsers in VMs resolve hostnames of websites on parent PC?

  I have a number of local websites in development on my Windows PC, set up as virtual hosts within Apache, with hostnames (along the lines of dev.example.com) resolved via the hosts file, so I can test them out them with various browsers. I now want to extend browser testing to running browsers in various OSs in virtual machines, and want to be able to resolve dev.example.com from the VMs. Currently these are a mix of VMWare Server and VirtualPC. I know I can edit the hosts file on any Windows VMs, but this is a bit fiddly and I'd like a solution which is independent of the individual VMs. I think what I need is a nameserver, but what's the simplest way of going about this? I'd like everything to be self-contained on the one machine. I think I can cover firewall and Apache permissioning issues.

  I need to control openfire users and conversations from my own java application, the number of users is more than 1000 , this is what I want to do exactly : Listening for new invitations to chat rooms and accept them automaticly ,listening for new messages for all users and listening for presence staus for all users . As well as I would like to send a new invitation to join a new chat room from specifics users ,send a new message from a user to a chat room and change the presence status of users .   I'm designing a flexible Wizard system that presents a number of screens to complete a task. Some screens may need to be skipped based on answers to prompts on one or more previous screens. The conditions to skip a given screen need to be editable by a non-technical user via a UI. Multiple conditions need only be combined with and. I have an initial design in mind, but it feels inelegant. I wonder if there's a better way to approach this class of problem. • How Do You Stress-Test Your Hard Drives?

  When looking for large new drives (= 1 TB) on newegg and the like, I note a number of reviews talking about drives being either D.O.A. or hitting the Click of Death (or even releasing the Magic Smoke) within a week or so of use. A portion of the reviews mention this phenomenon whether the drive in question is Western Digital or Hitachi or whatever. For those of you using Windows, what do you to: 1) Place a large initial stress on the drive to see if it can take it? For how long? 2) Test the drive afterwards (presumably with some sort of S.M.A.R.T. tool or others) to see if any negative changes have been noted? Note: This is one component of a larger plan for both high-availability and backups for my home data.

As far as I can see 57385 is the clients sequence number, a plus would mean RD bit set. Second question: what does the ARCOUNT do in the query? As I understand the tcpdump man page the [1au] means tcpdump treats this as a protocol anomalie - as would I. I see this in a lot of queries.

• Storing Tiled Level Data in J2ME game

  I'm developing a J2ME game which uses tiled backgrounds for the levels. My question is how do I store this tile information in my game. At the moment it is stored as an array; with each number representing a different tile from the tile-sheet. This works well enough, however I don't like the fact that it is 'hard-coded' into the game because (at least in my opinion) it is harder to edit the levels, or design new ones. I was also thinking that it would be difficult if you wanted to add a 'level pack', I'm not sure on how this would be achieved though; it's not something I was planning on doing, I'm just curious. I was wondering if there was a way I could store level data in some external file and then load this in to the game. The problem is I don't know what the limitations are for J2ME regarding file I/O, can it read in any file like Java? I am aware of the RMS, but from my experience I don't think this would work (unless I am mistaken). Also, would loading the data in this way be too big a performance hit? Or is there another way I can achieve what I am trying to do. As I said, the way I have it at the moment works fine, and if this is the only viable option then it will suffice.

• What's the easiest way to create an HTTP proxy which adds basic authentication to requests?

  I am trying to use a service provided by a server which requires basic HTTP authentication, however the application I am using does not support authentication. What I'd like to do is create a proxy that will enable my auth-less application to connect via the proxy (which will add the authentication information) to the server requiring authentication. I'm sure this can be done, however I'm overwhelmed with the number of proxies out there and couldn't find an answer how to do this. Basically it seems all I want to do is have a proxy serve this URL: http://username:password@remoteserver/path as this URL: http://proxyserver/path I can run it on Linux, but a plus if I can run it Windows as well. Open source or at least free is a must. A big plus is if it's fairly straightforward to setup.

• FTP Logs in IIS 7.5

  I know this is weird, but the thruth is that I can't find the FTP logs in one IIS 7.5 Server. In the IIS Management Console, I've gone to the server, click on FTP Logging that appears inside FTP group (with other options like FTP Messages and FTP Request filtering). Seems that the configured folder for logs is: C:\InetPubFolder\logs\LogFiles If I go there, I can find a lot of folders with the structure W3SVC#, where # it's a number. They all contain logs, but they are HTTP logs, plenty of GET and POST verbs. Am I missing something? The server contains a lot of domains and It's hard to find.

• Model a chain with different elements in Unity 3D

  I have to model, in unity 3D, a chain that is composed of various elements. some flexible, some rigid. The idea is to realize a human-chain where each person is linked to the other by their hands. I've not tried to implement it yet as i've no idea on what could be a good way to do it. In the game i've to manage a lot of chains of people... maybe also 100 chains composed of 11-15 people. The chain will be pretty simple and there won't be much interaction... Probabily some animation of the people one at time for each chain and some physic reaction (for example pushing a people in a chain should slightle flex the chain) the very problem of this work is that in the chain each object is composed by flexible parts (arms) and rigid parts (the body) and that the connection should remain firm... just like when people handshake... hands are firm and are the wrists to move. i can use C4D to model the meshes. i know this number may cause performance problems, but it's also true i will use low-poly versions of human. (for the real it won't be human, but very simple toonish characters that have harms and legs). So actually i'm trying to find a way to manage this in a way it can work, the performance will be a later problem that i can solve. If there is not a fast 'best-practiced' solution and you have any link/guide/doc that could help me in finding a way to realize this is, it would be very appreciated anyway if you post it. thanks

I have not seen the messages re-occurring. This is on a Solaris 9 Sparc system V240. The disks are managed by SVM and "metadb" is showing the flags as "a" Are there any tests or indications as to check/see if the disk is actually failing or was that error message initiated by something else. Two items are marked as Fail: - Store Passwords using Reversible Encryption - Password History Size I have opened the Local Security Settings tool from the Control Panel Administrative Tools, and ensured that the "Store passwords using reversible encryption" setting is enabled. Also, I've set the password history to a number. So I'm a bit miffed about the Fail marks. Any idea why the Fail marks appear? Any clues how I can Pass them? Thanks, Steve.

• Any danger in using the Wine workaround in 12.04?

  To run certain Windows programs in WINE you need to this workaround: echo 0|sudo tee /proc/sys/kernel/yama/ptrace_scope According to the support websites, this is due to a bug in the Ubuntu kernel that prevents ptrace and WINE playing well together. Using the above command you set the ptrace to 0 which according the research I've done(don't ask me which websites, I have seem a lot of them), ptrace has to do with the interactions between programs. The 0 setting is more permissive than the 1. I have to assume that there was a good reason Ubuntu wanted the ptrace=1 so this leads me back to the short form of the question. Are there any risks involved in setting ptrace=0. Lower security? problems debugging? any others that I haven't thought of??? P.S. for anybody reading this that wonders what the bug causes, the Windows programs will fail to open at all, in the System Monitor you will see many instances of the program trying to open and then they will eventually all quit and if you run the progam for the terminal you will get an error that tells you that the maximum number of program instances has been reached.

• What's the best Flash Blocker for the Chrome Browser on a Mac?

  Looking at the extensions gallery for Chromium there seems to be a number fo flash-blocking extensions available: A couple with very similar names even. I've been using ClicktoFlash in Safari and am used to it just flat out working everywhere. Unfortunately after using FlashBlock by Ruzanow for a bit I've noticed it gets a bit "Hinky" at times (blocking the flash by collapsing the div so you can't click to enable it, etc.) I have a feeling there may be some other extensions/scripts out there not listed above that are better. Ultimately I'd like to find a flash blocker that works as well as ClickToFlash does in Safari.

• Homepage not showing on Google

  About six weeks ago my homepage (mayberrykayakingdotcodotuk) disappeared from the google organic search for "kayaking pembrokeshire" despite it having been number 2 within a few weeks of it's launch last summer. My previous site (www.mikemayberrykayakingdotcodotuk) had been 2nd for about six years and has 301 redirects for all pages to the new site. Google toolbar still rates the homepage as 3/10 and the domain is still showing in search results, just not the homepage. A little research suggests that this is most likely to be due to an issue with google treating two pages as identical content (one with www. and one with not) since the changes in their algorithms around that time and that the way to fix this is to add some code somewhere. This makes sense to me as my print advertising doesn't have the www part of the address. I have cpanel access but a limited knowledge on web coding, having picked things up as I've gone along and paid for designers etc., when needed. Would someone be able to let me know where I have to go to add the code and what code I need to add to redirect the crawlers to one page? Or is there another issue that is causing this? I have tested the 'List-Unsubscribe' header and it does not appear to provide the button. I have tested in both Gmail and OS X Mail. I tested with an http address and with both an email address and an http address. The format of the header is as follows: List-Unsubscribe: <mailto:[email protected]>, <http://domain.com/member/unsubscribe/[email protected]?id=12345N> No button appears in any test. My questions: How widely is List-Unsubscribe supported? Should a button be appearing somewhere, or does something else have to be present? I have seen a comment that even if the button is not present, services like Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail/Windows Live would give higher regard to email having the header. Thus it might be worthwhile for this aspect alone. Please note that our standard email footer already contacts instructions and a link to allow unsubscribing from our email. Finally, is it worth while to implement this header? (That is, any downsides?)

• Block a machine from accessing the internet

  After some confirmation that I have thinking right in this scenario. We have a number of wired and wireless machines which presently have direct internet access. I also have a Linux (Ubuntu) server which is used as a file server for the network. Essentially I would like to be able to turn internet access on and off for machines. My plan is to block these machines by MAC address at the router. I would then set up a proxy server on the Linux box (ie Squid) so that the machines I wish to restrict can access the internet via the proxy. As I can adjust access via ACLs in squid, I would be able to switch on or off a machines access to the internet without having to further adjust the router's MAC rules. And of course I could go further and create a few scripts to assist with this admin task. Does this seem sound and have I over looked anything? Any help greatly appreciated. Simon.

• Tunneling HTTPS traffic via a PUTTY/SSL tunnel with SOCKS

  I have configured a SOCKS ssh tunnel to a remote proxy, and set my Firefox to use localhost:<port> as a SOCKS proxy. My intention is to tunnel outgoing HTTP/S connections from my machine via a specific 3rd party server I own (on AWS). In my testing, HTTP UTLs are forwarded properly (e.g. when I access http://jsonip.com/ from my computer I do get the server's IP) However, whenever I try to reach an HTTPS address, I get this error: The proxy server is refusing connections How do I debug/fix it? My PUTTY tunnel config is simply (some random source port number + dynamic checked): P.S. I'm aware I might need to manually accept SSL certificates. The reason I'm doing this is to resolve problems using gmail as an outbound SMTP service.

• About C# objects and the possibilties it has

  As a novice programmer and I always wonder about c# capabilities. I know it is still early to judge that but all i want to know is can c# do complex stuffs or something outside windows OS. I think C# is a proprietary language (I don't know if I said that right) meaning you can't do it outside Visual Studio or Windows. Also you can't create your own controller (called object right?) like you are forced to use these available in toolbox and their properties and methods. Can C# be used with OpenGL API or DirectX API Finally it always bothers me when I think I start doing things in Visual Studio, I know it sounds arrogant to say but sometimes I feel that I don't like to be forced to use something even if its helpful, like I feel (do I have the right to feel?) that I want to do all things by myself? Don't laugh I just feel that this will give me a better understanding. Is Visual C# like using MaxScript inside 3ds max in that C# is exclusive to do Windows and Forms and Components that are Windows related and maxscript is only for 3d editing and manipulation for various things in the software. If it is too difficult for a beginner I hope you don't answer the fourth question as I don't have enough motivation and I want to keep the little I have. Note: Sorry for my English, I am self taught and never used the language with native speakers so expect so errors. I have a lot of questions regarding many things, what is the daily ratio you think for asking (number of questions) that would not bother the admins of the site and the members here. • What type of amazon instance should I use and do I need auto scaling and load balancing?

  Hi I am looking to release a website that will initially have large amounts of uploads from users. The first will be 65GB and the rest will probably be close to 1TB. They could happen simultaneously. My question is what type of amazon server instance would be best for this? The website is just being released so the traffic wont be very high. I have been using a micro instance for development but it is time to launch and I need more power. Should I use auto scaling and a load balancer to increase the number of instances when I need it or Will a small or medium instance do the trick? If I do use auto scaling and load balancing how do I handle things like sessions and the database/file lookups? Does one instance become the primary instance and the rest become clones?

• Which SATA controller is better to use with Windows Server 2008 R2 64 bit?

  We're preforming some hardware upgrade on our server machines. As a part of this process, we have to install some additional disk drives. Unfortunately, total number of drives will become 7 or 8, while all of our motherboards have only 6 SATA ports. Obviously, we need additional disk controllers. For now, we've tested Silicon Image (actually, no-name) and Adaptec controllers, both on SiI3132 chip, and got some problems with drivers for them: Silicon Image drivers are not installing at all, and Adaptec ones are installing, but the system says they're not signed and becomes unbootable. We're tryed both drivers from controllers' CD's and latest versions from manufacturers' websites, and no luck. So, can you recommend some SATA controllers that will really work without tambourine dances on mentioned OS (we need just 2 SATA ports and PCI-E, while RAID and any other features are no-matter)? Thanks for any help.
