• OpenOffice in Java

  I need a Java interface to the OpenOffice document conversion which would equal to a manual (Open... and then Save As...) as well as access to the PDF generation. The following are some example of what I want to achieve. 1) Open one type of document (fx. OpenOffice Writer document or Microsoft Office document) onto memory and save it in another supported format. 2) Open one type of document into memory and export it as PDF. I have gone through http://api.openoffice.org but didn't get any material which can help me to get started. I also tried JODConverter but it requires me to run OpenOffice as a service. I wold prefer to include all the core functionality of OpenOffice in one JAR file so that that the user can use my application without installing or running openoffice on their PC. What would be a URL/code snippet from where I can get tutorials to get started? Also do I have to add some JAR files? Will the application work even if I don't have OpenOffice installed on my PC?

• SSIS - Bulk Update at Database Field Level

  Hello, Here's our mission: Receive files from clients. Each file contains anywhere from 1 to 1,000,000 records. Records are loaded to a staging area and business-rule validation is applied. Valid records are then pumped into an OLTP database in a batch fashion, with the following rules: If record does not exist (we have a key, so this isn't an issue), create it. If record exists, optionally update each database field. The decision is made based on one of 3 factors...I don't believe it's important what those factors are. Our main problem is finding an efficient method of optionally updating the data at a field level. This is applicable across ~12 different database tables, with anywhere from 10 to 150 fields in each table (original DB design leaves much to be desired, but it is what it is). Our first attempt has been to introduce a table that mirrors the staging environment (1 field in staging for each system field) and contains a masking flag. The value of the masking flag represents the 3 factors. We've then put an UPDATE similar to... UPDATE OLTPTable1 SET Field1 = CASE WHEN Mask.Field1 = 0 THEN Staging.Field1 WHEN Mask.Field1 = 1 THEN COALESCE( Staging.Field1 , OLTPTable1.Field1 ) WHEN Mask.Field1 = 2 THEN COALESCE( OLTPTable1.Field1 , Staging.Field1 ) ... As you can imagine, the performance is rather horrendous. Has anyone tackled a similar requirement? We're a MS shop using a Windows Service to launch SSIS packages that handle the data processing. Unfortunately, we're pretty much novices at this stuff.

• paperclip overwrites / resets S3 permissions for non-bucket-owners

  I have opened this as an issue on Github (http://github.com/thoughtbot/paperclip/issues/issue/225) but on the chance that I'm just doing this wrong, I thought I'd also ask about it here. If someone can tell me where I'm going wrong, I can close the issue and save the Paperclip guys some trouble. Issue: When using S3 for storage, and you wish your bucket to allow access to other users to whom you have granted access, Paperclip appears to overwrite the permissions on the bucket, removing access to these users. Process for duplication: Create a bucket in S3 and set up a Rails app with Paperclip to use this bucket for storage Add a user (for example, [email protected], the user for the video encoding service Zencoder) to the bucket, and grant this user List and Read/Write permissions. Upload a file. Refresh the permissions. The user you added will be gone. As well, a user "Everyone" with read permissions will have been added. The end result is that you cannot, so far as I can tell, retain desired permissions on your bucket when using Paperclip and S3. Can anyone help?

  I am trying to bind connection to the DB using JNDI in my application that runs on JBoss. I did the following: I created the datasource file oracle-ds.xml filled it with the relevant xml elements: <datasources> <local-tx-datasource> <jndi-name>bilby</jndi-name> ... </local-tx-datasource> </datasources> and put it in the folder \server\default\deploy Added the relevant oracle jar file than in my application I performed: JndiObjectFactoryBean factory = new JndiObjectFactoryBean(); factory.setJndiName("bilby"); try{ factory.afterPropertiesSet(); dataSource = factory.getObject(); } catch(NamingException ne) { ne.printStackTrace(); } and this cause the error: javax.naming.NameNotFoundException: bilby not bound then in the output after this error occured I saw the line: 18:37:56,560 INFO [ConnectionFactoryBindingService] Bound ConnectionManager 'jb oss.jca:service=DataSourceBinding,name=bilby' to JNDI name 'java:bilby' So what is my configuration problem? I think that it may be that JBoss first loads and runs the .war file of my application and only then it loads the oracle-ds.xml that contain my data-source definition. The problem is that they are both located in the same folder. Is there a way to define priority of loading them, or maybe this is not the problem at all. Any idea?

The client should send it back so the load balancer knows where (which server) is dedicated to a specific client (the idea is that the first time the client get a server and the cookie identifies the server, then the load balancer sends the client to the same server for every call) Now, is there a way to tell to the plugin to enable automatically the cookie handling?

• Accessing functions in a swf-file through javascript [chatroulette.com]

  Lately I have been interested in the code behind chatroulette.com. As you probably know it is a peer-to-peer webcam-chat-service written in actionscript, as I understand. What i have been wondering about is weather its possible to extract the ip-address of whomever you are currently communicating with. I have seen services that do that, but they require that you install a program that runs alongside on your computer sniffing UDP-packages. I was wondering if there was a simpler method. What I do know is that the javascript on the page communicates with the application via "ExternalInterface". On this area I am pretty much a novice but according to my limited understanding you cant get information from the flash-application unless you have configured a listener for a call from javascript and then attach a callback to that event. Is this correct or can you access public functions and variables directly through javascript? There is for example a public function like this: public function get outgoingAddress():String{ return (this.__info.outgoingAddress); } Can it be accessed directly through javascript? If it cant be done so easily, is it possible to decompile the .swf-file, change it (add some functions) and recompile it and run it instead? I am hoping someone can satisfy my curiosity here. • I've made something that might be useful to the community. Now what?

  If the specifics are important, I made a cruisecontrol.net publisher plugin that notifies a series of phone numbers via voice, announcing the current state of the build. It uses Twilio to do so. I'd like to avoid getting hung up on the specifics of what it is I've made, as I have this question a lot, with a number of little hobby one-offs. What's the state of the art as far as making my hobby output available to the world at large? There seem to be a lot of options for open-source project hosting, community features, and what role to take in all of this. It's a little bewildering. What I'm looking for is to put this out into the wild for free and basically take a hands-off approach from there. Is that realistic? Which project hosting service can I use for free to allow developers to at least download the code, report issues and collaborate with each other to improve the product? What snags have you run into that could make me regret this decision? I'm interested in war stories, advice and guidance on making this little product available to the community where it can be used.

• Java library class to handle scheduled execution of "callbacks"?

  My program has a component - dubbed the Scheduler - that lets other components register points in time at which they want to be called back. This should work much like the Unix cron service, i. e. you tell the Scheduler "notify me at ten minutes past every full hour". I realize there are no real callbacks in Java. Here's my approach, is there a library which already does this stuff? Feel free to suggest improvements, too. Register call to Scheduler passes: a time specification containing hour, minute, second, year month, dom, dow, where each item may be unspecified, meaning "execute it every hour / minute etc." (just like crontabs) an object containing data that will tell the calling object what to do when it is notified by the Scheduler. The Scheduler does not process this data, just stores it and passes it back upon notification. a reference to the calling object Upon startup, or after a new registration request, the Scheduler starts with a Calendar object of the current system time and checks if there are any entries in the database that match this point in time. If there are, they are executed and the process starts over. If there aren't, the time in the Calendar object is incremented by one second and the entreis are rechecked. This repeats until there is one entry or more that match(es). (Discrete Event Simulation) The Scheduler will then remember that timestamp, sleep and wake every second to check if it is already there. If it happens to wake up and the time has already passed, it starts over, likewise if the time has come and the jobs have been executed. Edit: Thanks for pointing me to Quartz. I'm looking for something much smaller, however.

• Mix Audio tracks with offset in SOX

  From ASP.Net, I am using FFMPEG to convert flv files on a Flash Media Server to wavs that I need to mix into a single MP3 file. I originally attempted this entirely with FFMPEG but eventually gave up on the mixing step because I don't believe it it possible to combine audio only tracks into a single result file. I would love to be wrong. I am now using FFMPEG to access the FLV files and extract the audio track to wav so that SOX can mix them. The problem is that I must offset one of the audio tracks by a few seconds so that they are synchronized. Each file is one half of a conversation between a student and a teacher. For example teacher.wav might need to begin 3.3 seconds after student.wav. I can only figure out how to mix the files with SOX where both tracks begin at the same time. My best attempt at this point is: ffmpeg -y -i rtmp://server/appName/instance/student.flv -ac 1 student.wav ffmpeg -y -i rtmp://server/appName/instance/teacher.flv -ac 1 teacher.wav sox -m student.wav teacher.wav combined.mp3 splice 3.3 These tools (FFMEG/SoX) were chosen based on my best research, but are not required. Any working solution would allow an ASP.Net service to input the two FMS flvs and create a combined MP3 using open-source or free tools.

  Hi all, I have the following situation: I have class User with the follwing properies : public class User { string user name ; List <Contact> contacts ; List <BookMark> book marks; . . . } I have the same class in a different namespace , with some different properties . BWT , it's the same situation of it's classes (Contact) and (BookMark). I need to make a deep copy of the same properties from the two classes . Actually , I arrive to this situation by having an Entity Framework edmx file . I created the first database (SQL server 2008) from this model . And copied he same edmx file to another project and created the database with SQL CE db. Now I get the first data model objects by WCF service and need to persist them in the local database in my application . The objects are the same but there are some changs because of the modeling issue with a different databse. Do you have any workarround about this assue. Thanks in advance ...

I am doing a small charting application to track download statistics, and want to put the data into a pie chart.   I have a small Foundation application that checks a website and plays a sound if it sees a certain value. This application successfully plays a sound when I run it as my user from the Terminal.   I've created a dynamic page that, depending on the view type, will sometimes utilize the anchor tags and other times not. Essentially, I want to be able to control if on click the page jumps to the anchor. Is it possible to hide anchor tags using jQUery, so they are essentially removed? I need to be able to re-enable the anchors when necessary, and always show the current anchor in the browser's address bar. It seems to work in FireFox, but not in Internet Explorer. • Bizarre Javascript JSON undefined error

  I'm experiencing an error that I haven't been able to find any mention of anywhere. I'm developing an AJAX-enabled WCF web service with ASP.NET. In my ASP.NET master page's , I included the json.js file, copied fresh from json.org. When I run the page, it fails (VS 2008 catches a Javascript exception) on the first line of code in json.js (following lots of comments), which is: JSON = JSON || {}; The error says that JSON is undefined: Microsoft JScript runtime error: 'JSON' is undefined Well, duh! That's why the line is testing if it's defined and if so setting it to an empty object! It is supposed to be undefined, right? Last I heard it was not an error in Javascript to perform such an operation on an undefined variable. Can anyone give me a clue as to what's going on here? I suspect it's something gone wrong elsewhere that's somehow causing this problem. I don't have deep experience with either Javascript or ASP.NET so it might be that I'm missing some common gotcha in the setup.

  Hello all, I am creating my own email tracking system for email marketing tracking. I have been able to determine each persons email client they are using by using the http referrer but for some reason GMAIL does not send a HTTP_REFERRER at all! So I am trying to find another way of identifying when gmail requests a transparent image from my server.   I'm writing an application in Android that consumes some REST services I've created. These web services aren't issuing a standard Apache Basic challenge / response. Instead in the server-side code I'm wanting to interrogate the username and password from the HTTP(S) request and compare it against a database user to make sure they can run that service. I'm using HttpClient to do this and I have the credentials stored on the client after the initial login (at least that's how I see this working). So here is where I'm stuck. Preemptive authenticate under HttpClient requires you to setup an interceptor as a static member. This is the example Apache Components uses. • How can I solve this NHibernate Querying in an n-tier architecture?

  I've hit a wall with trying to decouple NHibernate from my services layer. My architecture looks like this: web - services - repositories - nhibernate - db I want to be able to spawn nhibernate queries from my services layer and possibly my web layer without those layers knowing what orm they are dealing with. Currently, I have a find method on all of my repositories that takes in IList<object[]> criteria. This allows me to pass in a list of criteria such as new object() {"Username", usernameVariable}; from anywhere in my architecture. NHibernate takes this in and creates a new Criteria object and adds in the passed in criteria. This works fine for basic searches from my service layer, but I would like to have the ability to pass in a query object that my repository translates into an NHibernate Criteria. Really, I would love to implement something like what is described in this question: Is there value in abstracting nhibernate criterion. I'm just not finding any good resources on how to implement something like this. Is the method described in that question a good approach? • Issue in setting alarm time in AlarmManager Class

  I have used the following code in setting alarm time in AlarmManager class. Now Suppose my device current date 9-july-2012 11:31:00, Now suppose i set set a alarm at 9-july-2012 11:45:00, then it works fine and pop-up an alarm at that time. But if i set an alarm at 10-aug-2012 11:40:00, then as soon as exit the app the alarm pop-up, which is wrong because i set an alarm at month of august, So why this happen, is anything wrong in my code. if anyone knows help me to solve this out. • Dual usage of asp.net mvc and php under same domain

  Hello all, I've got a scenario where we have a customer who has a linux hosted php app (joomla) that they wish to integrate with some back-end asp.net mvc functionality that was created for a 'sister' site. Basically, the mvc site has prices and stock availability methods which (in the sister site) populates dropdown lists and other 'order' style info on the pages. I've been tasked with looking at the integration options to allow the php site to use this info as a 'service'. (as ever, these guys are looking at cost of ownership, maintenence etc, so this is their preferred route) Has anyone done anything similar with success?? I'd imagine (much like the sister site) liberal doses of ajax will be employed in order to populate portions of the page on demand. So this may have a bearing on any suggestions that you may have. Also, the methods that are being called ultimately end up populating the same database, so there are no issues with correlating the ID's across the different platforms. I don't really want to go down any 'iframe' type route if at all possible, tho' reality may dictate this as being an option. I'm possibly (naively) imagining that i could simply invoke the mvc functions directly from the php app with some sort of 'session' variable being passed for authentication. pretty tall order or pretty straightfwd?? cheers jim

• Ajax UpdatePanels SetFocus issue

  I set the AutoPostback property of a textbox to True so I can process the TextChanged event on the server and, based on what they typed in the textbox, appropriately display a message in an update panel. The problem is, when the partial screen refresh is performed, no control on the screen has focus. 99% of the time, when the text in the textbox is changed, it is because the user has tabbed forward, and so, to limit the disruption in the lost of focus, I perform a "Focus" call on teh next control in the tab sequence. For the most part, this works OK, but of course, is disputive if the user is tabbing in the reverse order or has used the mouse to set the focus to another control. In these situations, the focus would be set to the next control even though the user was trying to set focus elsewhere. OK, that sucks. Now what I consider the bigger problem with calling the focus method on the server: In IE, it works OK, but in Mozilla Firefox and Chrome, setting the focus causes a repositioning of the scroll bar, even though none is necessary because the control is already in view. I realize that I could switch to doing AJAX web service calls, but these darn Updae Panels are so convenient if used in moderation. is there anyway to use updatepanels and not have these focus/scroll issues?

• WCF DataContract Upcasting

  I'm trying to take a datacontract object that I received on the server, do some manipulation on it and then return an upcasted version of it however it doesn't seem to be working. I can get it to work by using the KnownType or ServiceKnownType attributes, but I don't want to roundtrip all of the data. Below is an example: [DataContract] public class MyBaseObject { [DataMember] public int Id { get; set; } } [DataContract] public class MyDerivedObject : MyBaseObject { [DataMember] public string Name { get; set; } } [ServiceContract(Namespace = "http://My.Web.Service")] public interface IServiceProvider { [OperationContract] List<MyBaseObject> SaveMyObjects(List<MyDerivedObject> myDerivedObjects); } public class ServiceProvider : IServiceProvider { public List<MyBaseObject> SaveMyObjects(List<MyDerivedObject> myDerivedObjects) { ... do some work ... myDerivedObjects[0].Id = 123; myDerivedObjects[1].Id = 456; myDerivedObjects[2].Id = 789; ... do some work ... return myDerivedObjects.Cast<MyBaseObject>().ToList(); } } Anybody have any ideas how to get this to work without having to recreate new objects or using the KnownType attributes?
