• Cascading KVM switches

  I have a not-so-small number of computers (say, 5) which I want to access with a single keyboard, USB and monitor. I can get an 8-port KVM switch, which is a pretty expensive piece of hardware; however, in theory, I should be able to cascade KVM switches: Have one 4-port KVM switch between 2 other KVMs (a 2-port and a 4-port). Is this doable (with typical off-the-shelf switches and cables)? Has anyone had experience doing this? Note: I'm interested in USB-only for the keyboard and mouse, and either VGA or DVI for the display. Audio and PS/2 connections are irrelevant for me..

• MySQL slow query log logging all queries

  We have a MySQL 5.1.52 Percona Server 11.6 instance that suddenly started logging every single query to the slow query log. The long_query_time configuration is set to 1, yet, suddenly we're seeing every single query (e.g. just saw one that took 0.000563s!). As a result, our log files are growing at an insane pace. We just had to truncate a 180G slow query log file. • Ubuntu 12.04 still slow at mounting internal filesystem

  I'm using Toshiba laptop with this configuration: - CPU: Core i5, 2.4GHz - RAM: 4GB - Graphics card: Intel - Hard disk: 500GB SATA I installed Ubuntu 12.04 64bit and got the same issue with this guy Very slow boot due to mounting filesytem, I tried all suggestions there but the slow boot issue still here.   Oracle has a number of different engineered systems.  These are design to be highly integrated, optimized and secure systems.  The Exadata database engineered system and the Exalogic application engineered system are two good examples.  Often I am asked how these comply with different standards and regulations.  Exalogic is the Oracle engineered system that supports applications and the focus of today's blog.  First, we must recognize that as a collection of hardware and software, we cannot simply state that Exalogic is "compliant" with PCI DSS.  This is because Exalogic must be implemented within the context of one's existing IT infrastructure, the security features of that infrastructure, the governance framework that exists, security policies, operational procedures, and other factors.  What we can say though, is that Exalogic has been designed with various security capabilities that can be utilized to support compliance to PCI DSS as well as other standards and regulations (e.g., NIST and HIPAA).  Given that, Exalogic can be an excellant platform for running PCI related payment applications.  Coalfire Systems, a leading QSA in the US, has evaluated Exalogic against PCI DSS and supports this position.  Their evaluation can be found here: Exalogic and PCI Compliance. • Is it possible to route *.example.com to a single machine without registering extra domains?

  I would like to achieve something similar to what wordpress.com does - giving each user its own subdomain. user1.wordpress.com would in the VirtualHosts setup of Apache would have its DocRoot at /user/user1, for instance. Now, our hosting service provider takes a fee for creating a domain, and in our case this would mean a ridiculous number of domains with a matching price. After some googling on DNS I came over a description of a DNAME record. That seems to fit the bill precisely. Any reason why my service provider would not do this, or why I should not do this?

• Completely hiding nginx server response header

  I'm having trouble hiding my server header (nginx 1.2.1). I've google'd it and it seems all I have to do is to set server_tokens off; in nginx.conf. But doing this only removed the version number, but it still shows nginx as the server. I've seen there's a module called HttpHeadersMoreModule but I don't need all those fancy options. All I want is to hide the header. How can I manually hide the header completely?

• Applying Service Pack 1 to Team Foundation Server 2010

  Disclosure:  I performed the following activities on my Windows 7 SP1 system, Visual Studio 2010 SP1 and a local Basic installation of TFS 2010. As with any deployment of a service pack into a server environment, take your recommended precautions and be aware of the changes you are putting in.  With that said, make sure you backup your databases, and that you have an exit/rollback strategy in the event of an unexpected situation. Team Foundation Server 2010 Service Pack 1 corresponds to KB2182621.  The KB article is http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2182621 The process will be very simple to follow, you will need to execute the mu_team_foundation_server_2010_sp1_x86_x64_651711.exe file.  That will extract files needed and launch the wizard driven Installation. Once this process completes, you need to validate the changes. By looking at Team Foundation Server 2010 Administration Console, you should see the reference to the KB number and SP1. There is also a good reason to validate log locations and records. From the Team Foundation Server 2010 Administration Console. Or from Windows Explorer, go to the C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Team Foundation\Server Configuration\Logs location and review the logs referenced by the servicing references.

• Ubuntu 12.04 3.2 Kernel showing incorrect "cache size" in cpuinfo?

  2x Xeon E5620 . 16 Cores altogether. /proc/cpuinfo shows cache is only @ 4096kb According to intel this should have 12MB of "smart cache". Doing searched for E5620 and CPUinfo shows the correct number: cache size : 12288 KB However mine shows this: processor : 15 v endor_id : GenuineIntel cpu family : 6 model : 44 model name : Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5620 @ 2.40GHz stepping : 2 microcode : 0x1 cpu MHz : 2400.104 cache size : 4096 KB fpu : yes fpu_exception : yes cpuid level : 11 wp : yes flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush mmx bogomips : 4800.20 clflush size : 64 cache_alignment : 64 address sizes : 40 bits physical, 48 bits virtual Any idea on why it shows like it's missing 8MB in CPU cache? .

• Selection Issues with a PDF from a Word document

  I have a long Word document that has a running footer. When I try to copy and paste across pages in the PDF generated from this document, the behavior of this footer is unpredictable--sometimes it is unselected, sometimes it is selected, sometimes the footer on the next page is selected. I would prefer to make this portion of the document unselectable, so that it still shows up but doesn't interfere with copying and pasting. Does anyone have an idea of how to do this? No, changing it to an image isn't possible, because it includes a page number.

• Is there any way of preventing .csv files being converted into excel format

  I'm trying to work with an automated testing tool which can use .csv files as its data sourse. After saving a notepad file containing a number of fields and data seperated by commas as .csv it appears to have been converted to an excel file. When I run the test, only the first line of values is identified and can be run within the automated test. Not sure if this is expected with the testing product (www.badboy.co.au), but just wondered if there was a way of preventing excel from taking control of the .csv file? Any helpfull feedback would be great.

• Backing up data (including mysqldumps) to S3

  We have a web app on a number of servers and we want to add an additional layer of redundancy by backing up the key data to S3. The key data is the MySQL database and a folder containing dynamically created site assets - predominantly images. Some kind of rsync based solution would initially seem the best plan. A couple of years ago we played with S3cmd (in particular s3cmd sync) with some success but we didn't find it particularly reliable although this may have changed since. Its occurred to me though that a rsync solution might not work particularly well with a single db.sql file created with mysqldump and I assume this means the whole database getting transferred each time, with multiple databases of over 1GB this is going to add up to a lot of traffic (and $s) very quickly. With the image files I could simply just transfer files modified within the last day which would be far more simple. What approach should I look at?

• Windows Server 2008 R2 Maximum Processor Limit Confusion

  As I was looking through the Windows Server 2008 R2 specifications, I saw that the maximum supported processors is 64 sockets for Datacenter addition. This puts the maximum number or cores at 256 (if all sockets are quad cores), which I think it's just silly, but whatever. And now the questions: How does one set something like that up? (Obviously not for me, but humor me) Are there multiple dual socket motherboards running in a giant case with a ton of memory? How does the OS see all of the CPUs if they're on different boards? What would be a real world example of a need to have 64 sockets attached to one operating system vs 32 2 socket servers?

• Accessing locally hosted webpage via public IP

  Sorry if this is in the wrong place.I don't really know anything about server-related things, but I'm really curious about this. On my mac I figured out how to make a simple web page viewable via the local ip address or computer name on the LAN, and also how to hook it up with a free hostname from dyndns.com. So the dyndns hostname points to something, how can I access it directly? Typing in the global ip address (of the router) doesn't work, but if it did, how would it know which computer to point to? There must be some way of directly accessing what dyndns hostname points to by typing in some number, right? Sorry I don't really understand how it works.

• Remote Access to Owncloud Server

  I'm currently trying to setup my own own-cloud server, and I've got it fully installed, configured, and accessible from within my own local network. I cannot figure out how to access it from the outside. So far I've: Successfully setup port-forwarding on my local router. I've done so via 'single port forwarding' and 'port range forwarding' Ports 80, 443, 3306 (Apache-Full and MySQL) Successfully obtained my external IP address. I've also tested this magic number from within the network at #insertIPhere/owncloud and it did work. Successfully setup the server using SQLite Successfully setup the server using MySQL Created the following exceptions in my firewall: Allow In Port 80 (Apache Full) Allow In Port 443 (Apache Full) Allow In Port 3306 (MySQL) Tried connecting from several different remote networks, as to troubleshoot something on their end As far as trying to access it, I'm doing so through Google-Chrome and Mozilla Firefox trying to reach the server through #insertIPhere/owncloud using the above public IP address. So what have I missed, and how do I access my server from outside? Thanks in advance for your help and time, and I apologize in advance for what will probably result in my noobish mistake in networking. I've looked at the official documentation.   Hi all, I'd like to forward calls from a Skype account to another Skype account (both online), but so that it calls and then enters a number. E.g., I have two accounts: acc1 and acc2. I want all calls from acc1 to be forwarded to acc2, and when the call is established to enter "#123". Is that possible? Thanks. EDIT: The question is basically how to call a user and add the extension directly, before the call has been established (e.g., to call directly acc2:#123).

• monitoring TCP/IP performance on Solaris

  I am trying to tune a high message traffic system running on Solaris. The architecture is a large number (600) of clients which connect via TCP to a big Solaris server and then send/receive relatively small messages (.5 to 1K payload) at high rates. The goal is to minimize the latency of each message processed. I suspect that the TCP stack of the server is getting overwhelmed by all the traffic. What are some commands/metrics that I can use to confirm this, and in case this is true, what is the best way to alleviate this bottleneck?

  Background: 3 of 9 Barcode Alphabet A simple syntax for 3 of 9 bar codes What is the formula behind the alphabet and digits in a 3 of 9 bar code? For example, ASCII has a relatively clear arrangement. Numbers start at 33, capitals at 65, lowercase at 97. From these starting points you can infer the ASCII code for any number or letter. The start point for each range is also a multiple of 32 + 1. Bar codes seem random and lacking sequence. If we use the syntax from the second link, this is the first six characters in 3 of 9: A 100-01 B 010-01 C 110-00 D 001-01 E 101-00 F 011-00 I see no pattern here; what is it? I'm as much interested in the designer's intended pattern behind these as I am in someone devising an algorithm of their own that can give you the above code for a given character based on its sequence. I struggled with where to put this question; is it history, computer science, information science? I chose Programmers because a StackExchange search had the most barcode hits here, and because I wanted to specifically relate it to ASCII to explain what sort of formula/explanation I'm looking for.

• I don't program in my spare time. Does that make me a bad developer?

  A lot of blogs and advice on the web seem to suggest that in order to become a great developer, doing just your day job is not enough. For example, you should contribute to open source projects in your spare time, write smartphone apps, etc. In fact a lot of this advice seems to suggest that if you don't love programming enough to do it all day long then you're probably in the wrong career. That doesn't ring true with me. I enjoy my work, but when I come home from the office I'm not in the mood to jump straight back onto the computer and start coding away until bedtime. I only have a certain number of hours free time each day, and I'd rather spend them on other hobbies, seeing friends or going outside than in front of the computer. I do get a kick out of programming, and do hack around outside of work occasionally. I'm committed to my personal development and spend time reading tech blogs and books as a way to keep learning and becoming better. But that doesn't extend so far as to my wanting to use all my spare time for coding. Does this mean I'm not a 'true' software developer at heart? Is it possible to become a good software developer without doing extra outside your job? I'd be very interested to hear what you think.

• Deploying InfoPath forms &ndash; idiosyncrasies

  Well, I have written a sophisticated PowerShell script to expedite the deployment of InfoPath forms - .XSN file.  Along the way by way of trial and error (mostly error and error), I discovered a few little things. Here they are. •    Regardless of how the install command is run – PowerShell or the GUI in Central Admin – SharePoint enwraps the XSN inside a solution – WSP, then installs and deploys the solution. •    The solution is named by concatenating “form-“ with the first 16 characters (or less if the file name is shorter than 16) of the file name and the required WSP at the end. So if the form name was MyInfopathForm.xsn the solution name will be form-MyInfopathForm.wsp, but for WithdrawalOfRequestsForRefund.xsn it will be named form-WithdrawalOfRequ.wsp •    It only gets worse! Had there already been a solution file with the same name, Microsoft appends a three digit number to the name, like MyInfopathForm-123.wsp. Remember a digit is a finger, I suspect a middle finger, so when you deploy the same form – many versions of it, or as it was in my case – testing a script time and again, you’ll end up with many such digit (middle finger) appended solutions, all un-deployed except the last one. This is not a bug. It’s a feature!   Well, there are ways around it. When by hand, remove the solution from the solution store before deploying the form again. In the script I do the same thing. And finally - an important caveat; Make sure that all your form names are unique in the first 16 characters.
