• What do encrypted files' data look like?

  I know there are a lot of encryption programs available, that I would guess use different methods for encryption, and thus have different types of output files (.fve .tc .cha .dmg (bitlocker, truecrypt, challenger, ect.)), but if someone didn't know what the file was and just looked at the data, what would it look like? Does it just look like random bits, or can you still pick out a pattern? If it does look random, how is it if I moved the encrypted file to another computer, the other computer can tell it's a file, and is able to decrypt it (how would it even know where to start or stop, if it all looked random)? Also, how is the structure affected by encrypting files twice, using the same method, or a different one? Thanks for any help, and if you know any books or site about encryption for complete idiots, I'd appreciate it!

• How do I find the really good AVS presets for winamp?

  I used to have an amazing collection of AVS presets that I slowly built up back in the day. I had probably 500-1000 that I could just let cycle through while I watched music. That was a while ago, and now I have no idea how to sort through the slushpile that is the winamp site to find the best presets. Sorting by rating is nearly useless since there are so many of varying quality. Is there a better way to browse the collection? Is there a really good large collection somewhere?

• Brain picking during job interview

  Recently, I had a job interview at a big Silicon Valley company for a senior software developer/R&D position. I had several technical phone screens, an all day on-site interview and more technical phone screens for another position later. The interviews went really well, I have a PhD and working experience in the area I was applying for yet no offer was made. So far, so good. It was an interesting experience, I am employed, absolutely no hard feelings about this. Some of the interviewers asked really detailed questions to the point of being suspicious about new technologies I have been working on. These technologies are still in development and have not come to market yet. I know some major hardware/software companies are working on this too. I have had many interviews before and based on my former interviewing experience and the impression some of the interviewers left behind, I know now all this company wanted from me is to extract some ideas about what I did in this field. Remember, I am referring to a R&D position, not the standard software developer stuff. Has anybody encountered this situation so far? And how did you deal with it? I am not so much concerned about "stealing" ideas but more about being tricked into showing up for an interview when there is no intension to hire anyway. I am considering refusing technical interviews in the future and instead proposing a trial period in which the company can easily reconsider its hiring decision.

• Why doesn't the Gtalk plugin work in Firefox 3.6 betas? [closed]

  I've done a quick Google search, Bugzilla search, and glanced at Google's site for the GTalk plugin, but I can't find an answer, so I thought I'd pose the question here: On OS X, in the Firefox 3.6 betas (I'm now on beta 5, but it's been happening since at least beta 3), the GTalk plugin doesn't work for me. I've been completely unable to use video chat in GChat, which forces me to open Firefox 3.5 whenever I want to use it. This happens even after I uninstall/reinstall the GTalk plugin. Anyone know why this is happening?

  I have written a short write-up about my experience at Oracle and am attaching some pics along:  I joined Oracle on 5th January 2011 as part of my internship program in BITS Pilani Goa Campus. In the short period of six months, I had the most beautiful and interesting time of my life. It was fun to work in Oracle, thanks to the whole team. I had an excellent manager, simple and sophisticated, who gave me the utmost enthusiasm to work. I gained a lot of knowledge during my internship, thanks to my colleagues. They were very helpful and motivated us (interns) in every possible way. In the initial stages of work, in which you know almost nothing, they helped me gain knowledge at a rapid speed. Thanks to the vast database of study material at the Oracle site, that I could start on with my project in a very short time.  For me, the time flew like anything and made the 6 months look like a few days. It was probably due to the team, that the work was so much fun. We had our deadlines but had full freedom as to how to work and when to work. I don't remember a single instance, in which I was working and not listening to songs. I mean it will always be a time to remember. I hope to join this company and make this time last forever.  Samarth

• Is it unethical to sell the award of a competition? [closed]

  This summer, i won a competition held by microsoft & nokia... Winners from each uni. received an high-end smartphone... Knowing that particular "high-end smartphone" had not much user to develop for, as soon as i receive it, i put an ad on a ebay-like site to sell it. Eventually i exchanged it with a tablet which had high developer demand & many many users to develop for , so i could make money by developing for it. I also email microsoft asking, when something technical goes wrong with the device , can i get it fixed by warranty. Which i never received a respond. Later on, after a while... I got some feedback from a connection i have from nokia, regarding sale of the device & asking for the warranty.. He says and i quote : " They say, they werent happy that you sold the device and got offended that you asked for warranty. You should not expect anything at all from microsoft or nokia in the future. " I was like what the frak, they didnt gave it to me as a gift, i won it in a competition as an award , it is my right to do whatever i want. How ethical is that , they dont respond to my email directly? Is it unethical to sell a gadget you won in a competition? Is it unethical to ask for warranty on award?

• How do I backup my customer's data?

  If you run a SaaS app, or work on one, I would love to hear from you. Where the safety and security of your customer's data is paramount, how do you secure it and back it up? I would love to know your main host (e.g. Heroku, Engine Yard, Rackspace, MediaTemple, etc.) and who you use for your backup. Be as detailed as possible - e.g. a quick overview of your service and the data you store (images for instance), what happens with the images when the user uploads them (e.g. they go to your Linode VPS, and posted to the site for them to see - then they are automatically sent to AWS or wherever, then once a week they are backed up to tape by the managed hosting provider, and you also back them up to your house/office). If you could also give some idea as to what the unit cost (per GB/per user/per month) of storage is - on average, I would really appreciate that. Getting ready to launch my app, and I would love to get some more perspective on the nitty gritty details involved. Thanks!

  Recently I have started my journey Oracle SOA Suite and the first big hurdle everyone warned me off is setting up Oracle SOA Suite environment in our personal machine for learning. My laziness pushed me to search for much easier way than regular all download, configuration stuff and bang..! I found in the solution oracle site itself. Oracle SOA Suite on Virtual Box. For those who are not aware of Virtual Box, it’s a virtualization software which enables u to install multiple operating systems on a virtual hard drive which in turn managed by Virtual Box. In short pack ur Operating System, Software, Files everything into a VM and carry it wherever u go. Coming to Oracle SOA Suite, Oracle is offering a prebuilt VM for download which u can mount on ur Virtual box and that all you need. Here is the link for Virtual Box image of Oracle SOA Suite. • Please recommend tools for PC, browser, home network performance problems?

  My client is experiencing some odd response behavior in their browser for the past few days. Classic, "nothing has changed" so I am starting at ground zero. Browsing a website will timeout or take a ridiculous time to load -- other times, the same site and query is immediately responsive. Once a connection is established, video streams are uninterrupted. The home network hosts a website, but it is not experiencing any activity in Apache's 'access.log' I am using speedtest.net to check if the ISP through the internet is 'OK' -- which looks typical (average +/-). I have to suspect the home network is beaconing or something very abnormal, but I don't know where to start.

  Problem You are designing a database table for a web application that requires to store IP address of users who visits the site. The IP address is required to be stored a character data in the table. To define size of the character column you need to know maximum length of IP address. So, what is the maximum length of an IP address? Solution The IPv4 version of IP address is in the following format 255.255.255.255 To store IPv4 address we require 15 characters. The IPv6 version of IP address is grouped into sets of 4 hex digits separated by colons, like the below 2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334 To store IPv6 address you require a 39 characters long column. Conclusion As IPv4 and IPv6 are the commonly use protocols, you better define a column with 39 characters length so that both the format address are saved in to the table without any issues. • Host a subdomain from an IIS7 server on another server

  I am running a network with two server, one running SBS 2008 which hosts a majority of the network services (DNS, DHCP, Exchange, IIS, DC, AD...), including the primary webpage at mydomain.com. The other server is a linux box running an apache web server. I'm trying to set the apache server to host the site site2.mydomain.com. I have changed the DNS settings on the first server so that site2.mydomain.com can be accessed from the internal network, but I cannot access site2.mydomain.com from the internet. I have tried using server farms and application request routing cache, as described on this page, http://forums.iis.net/t/1156458.aspx, but I still can't access site2.mydomain.com from the internet. I don't have much experience with web servers, I usually just administer local networks, so I'm not sure if I'm going about this the right way. Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.

• How can I install a custom (patched) PECL extension?

  I'm trying to use the htscanner PECL extension on my CentOS 5/PHP 5.2.6 machine, but there's a bug in the latest version where a newline character is added to the end of every php_value directive. This behavior causes my include_path and error_log values not to work. The bug and the patch are documented on the PECL site: http://pecl.php.net/bugs/bug.php?id=16891 I've downloaded the latest version, applied the patch, and re-compressed the package — but I can't get the PECL installer to accept it — or any local package, for that matter. I've tried every variation of the pecl install syntax that I can think of, and the only times I'm able to get it to work, it downloads an online copy first and ignores the local copy. Can anyone recommend a method for installing a PECL extension from a local file? Thanks for your consideration.

• Lightning fast forum based around metadata / tags? [closed]

  I wonder if anything like this exists. I'd like to add a forum to my site, but instead of the usual forum/subforum/sub-subforum structure, I'd like to use a metadata/tag approach where everything exists as a single directory, and where there's a search field at the top which instantly (<0.5 sec) filters the threads to a particular keyword or keywords. Also, as the admin, I would be able to add highly visible buttons at the top, which can be clicked on for the main categories I choose for the forum (nevertheless, users can also add tags to their own threads outside of these default main tags I supply if they wish). This approach, if done properly, is more powerful, efficient, maintenance free, scalable and friendly than a standard forum, so I was hoping someone had the same idea and made something out of it. It couldn't be that hard. I'd want the speed to be up to (or near) the standard of this: http://forum.dlang.org/ Other forums (e.g.: phpBB, shudder) are orders of magnitude worse than that in terms of latency (posting or browsing), and I think that is wrong, even in principle ;)

• Need help connecting to SRW2024 Linksys Switch from CentOS 5.4

  I am configured a Linksys SRW2024, I accidently changed the management VLAN before changing the VLAN configuration thus I can no longer access it with the net. The only way I have read to get into it now is via a console cable, my laptop with me is a MacBook Pro with no Serial port connection, apart from driving around a town that I am unfamilar with to find an adapter I thought I would try on a Linux box. I have a CentOS 5.4 server here (PowerEdge R300) that I am trying to use to talk to the switch. I tried minicom first but I do not see the console. Another site suggested the screen command. I tried "screen /dev/ttyS0 38400" but all I get is blinking curser, I do not see the configuration. I don't know if anyone here as any tips but I hope someone does. Thank You,

• What is the best way to run ClamAV on Windows Server 2008 R2

  I'm hosting a Wordpress-site on Windows Server 2008 RS and want to scan all files that are uploaded by users for viruses using this plugin http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/upload-scanner/. I'm on a really tight budget (no profit) so ClamAV seem like a good choice. What is the best way to run ClamAV under these circumstances? I'm concidering the following options: Just running the raw windows build from http://sourceforge.net/projects/clamav/ an setup definition updates with task scheduler. Any way to automate updates of the scanner (binaries)? Using a "distro" like ClamWin or Immunet (advertised on clamav.net). Any suggestions are welcome.

• Can't find generic USB audio driver for a Samson COU1 USB microphone

  I am unable to use a Samson USB CO1U microphone on a PC running XP, SP3. When I plug it into the USB port, Windows generates the sound indicating that it has found new hardware, and the green LED on the mic lights. But, it does not work, and the device manager reports that it cannot find a driver after searching. The same mic works on a Vista machine. Samson has no driver on their Web site, and insists that the generic audio driver in Windows should work. (http://www.samsontech.com/PRODUCTS/productpage.cfm?prodID=1810). I cannot find a generic USB audio driver at Microsoft.com. Can anyone help? Larry

• Check availability of my websites

  Hi, How can I check the availability of websites from hosted by company? Ping the server and checking if the services for IIS or Apache/Tomcat is not enough. I want to see if the sites are responsive, if I can login. My idea is to build a script using cURL to access the websites and parse for certain words. However using cURL to access a secure site (HTTPS://www.fleetagent.be) doesnt seem to work. cURL might not be the best tool! Any ideas how to check the availability of this website? • Fix for poor hd playback for 11.04 upwards

  Hi guys ive seen loads of posts on this site about poor 720/1080p playback in recent ubuntu versions I had this problem and fixed it so I thought id share it with everyone.... 1 install mplayer 2 install smplayer frontend {in software center} 3 open smplayer 4 go to "OPTIONS" then "PREFRENCES" then "GENRAL" 5 if you have a nvidia card choose "OUTPUT DRIVER" and select "VDPAU" {for ATI or AMD choose xv (0 - ATI Radeon AVIVO video) I dont know if this will work as my card is nvidia but it should) 6 go to performance on the left hand side and set both local and streaming cache to 99999 (this may also fix dvd playback if you set that cache aswell} 7 check the box for "ALLOW HARD FRAME DROP" and set "LOOP FILTER" to skip only on HD 8 Set the "THREDS FOR DECODING OPTION TO THE NUMBER OF CORES YOUR CPU HAS IF YOU HAVE MORE THAN ONE CPU ADD UP ALL THE CORES FOR BEST PERFORMANCE" 9 Enjoy you HD movies again on ubuntu...... I have a pretty avrage machine heres my spec.... 2x Pentium 4 ht 3 ghz Stock dell power and motherboard GFORCE 310 HDMI 24 inch full HD tv as a monitor so any one with dule core cpu should have no problems getting this to work. hope this helps someone out.

• How do i enable deflate on apache2? debian

  I looked at the other answers and those solutions did not help. I am completely confused how to do this. I know almost nothing about apache nor how to use it and nearly all the article say write this but doesnt tell me where. So far i have done this # a2enmod deflate Module deflate already enabled Then i tried writing this in httpd.conf AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/html text/plain text/xml text/css Then i wrote a longer version which involved deflate.c. After those didnt work i deleted them all and wrote the AddOutputFilterByType line in apache2/sites-enabled/000-default inside of I used this to test http://www.whatsmyip.org/http_compression/ everytime it says no compression. I used another site but i could never compress. Also i restart the server everytime i save a file so what could be the problem and how do i enable this properly?

• How the heck is http://to./ a valid domain name?

  Apparently it's a URL shortener. It resolves just fine in Chrome and Firefox. How is this a valid top-level domain? Update: for the people saying it's browser shenanigans, why is it that: http://com./ does not take me to: http://www.com/? And, do browsers ever send you a response from some place other than what's actually up in the address bar? Aside from framesets and things like that, I thought browsers tried really hard to send you content only from the site in the address bar, to help guard against phishing.

  I have Gembird cam68ut. On my Ubuntu 12.10 it shows black screen in cheese and guvcview. I tested it in win7, it works fine. Here what I found: It is a uvc compliant camera, I checked on the site: 18ec:3299 USB 2.0 PC Camera (model number QC3231) ArkMicro This webcam is report by lsusb: Bus 001 Device 004: ID 18ec:3299 Arkmicro Technologies Inc. Here is the output of dmesg | tail: uvcvideo: Found UVC 1.00 device USB2.0 PC CAMERA (18ec:3299) uvcvideo: UVC non compliance - GET_DEF(PROBE) not supported.   Possible Duplicate: What are the best ways to increase your site's position in Google? One of the most basic SEO techiniques is including accurate description below 64 characters in the tags of each page. I was wondering if is considered ethical SEO to set up the contents based on a search keyword for example. So if the user searches for 'apples pictures' for example, then the title of the webpage would be 'apple pictures'. Note that the search keywords accurately describe my website contents because the title will always relate to the body of the webpage and 85-90% of the terms searched for will return corresponding results. Is this considered a good seo practice and is it ethical? Also, can someone explain what the idea is behind "linking"? I read somewhere that it is a good seo practice to link other websites and it is good when other websites link you. Does this mean that I should include as many links to other websites as possible (that are somehow relevant to my websites goal), also if I joined forums/services and posted my website url in the signature, would that still be considered other websites linking me?
