  Is it possible to send a SOAP request directly from a browser to service provider? And then parse the output in javascript to show the result? • Bizarre Javascript JSON undefined error

  I'm experiencing an error that I haven't been able to find any mention of anywhere. I'm developing an AJAX-enabled WCF web service with ASP.NET. In my ASP.NET master page's , I included the json.js file, copied fresh from json.org. When I run the page, it fails (VS 2008 catches a Javascript exception) on the first line of code in json.js (following lots of comments), which is: JSON = JSON || {}; The error says that JSON is undefined: Microsoft JScript runtime error: 'JSON' is undefined Well, duh! That's why the line is testing if it's defined and if so setting it to an empty object! It is supposed to be undefined, right? Last I heard it was not an error in Javascript to perform such an operation on an undefined variable. Can anyone give me a clue as to what's going on here? I suspect it's something gone wrong elsewhere that's somehow causing this problem. I don't have deep experience with either Javascript or ASP.NET so it might be that I'm missing some common gotcha in the setup.

  Hello all, I am creating my own email tracking system for email marketing tracking. I have been able to determine each persons email client they are using by using the http referrer but for some reason GMAIL does not send a HTTP_REFERRER at all! So I am trying to find another way of identifying when gmail requests a transparent image from my server. • Proper use of HttpRequestInterceptor and CredentialsProvider in doing preemptive authentication with

  I'm writing an application in Android that consumes some REST services I've created. These web services aren't issuing a standard Apache Basic challenge / response. Instead in the server-side code I'm wanting to interrogate the username and password from the HTTP(S) request and compare it against a database user to make sure they can run that service. I'm using HttpClient to do this and I have the credentials stored on the client after the initial login (at least that's how I see this working). So here is where I'm stuck. Preemptive authenticate under HttpClient requires you to setup an interceptor as a static member. This is the example Apache Components uses. And in a web page of SAP, I can only upload RSS, so I need put the information of the web services in the RSS For example, I put the information manually(name and total value) in the fields <title> and <descripcion>, these data are extracted from the web services. But sometimes I don´t know how much information brings the web service. • How can I solve this NHibernate Querying in an n-tier architecture?

  I've hit a wall with trying to decouple NHibernate from my services layer. My architecture looks like this: web - services - repositories - nhibernate - db I want to be able to spawn nhibernate queries from my services layer and possibly my web layer without those layers knowing what orm they are dealing with. Currently, I have a find method on all of my repositories that takes in IList<object[]> criteria. This allows me to pass in a list of criteria such as new object() {"Username", usernameVariable}; from anywhere in my architecture. NHibernate takes this in and creates a new Criteria object and adds in the passed in criteria. This works fine for basic searches from my service layer, but I would like to have the ability to pass in a query object that my repository translates into an NHibernate Criteria. Really, I would love to implement something like what is described in this question: Is there value in abstracting nhibernate criterion. I'm just not finding any good resources on how to implement something like this. Is the method described in that question a good approach? If so, could anyone provide some pointers on how to implement such a solution?

• Dual usage of asp.net mvc and php under same domain

  Hello all, I've got a scenario where we have a customer who has a linux hosted php app (joomla) that they wish to integrate with some back-end asp.net mvc functionality that was created for a 'sister' site. Basically, the mvc site has prices and stock availability methods which (in the sister site) populates dropdown lists and other 'order' style info on the pages. I've been tasked with looking at the integration options to allow the php site to use this info as a 'service'. (as ever, these guys are looking at cost of ownership, maintenence etc, so this is their preferred route) Has anyone done anything similar with success?? I'd imagine (much like the sister site) liberal doses of ajax will be employed in order to populate portions of the page on demand. So this may have a bearing on any suggestions that you may have. Also, the methods that are being called ultimately end up populating the same database, so there are no issues with correlating the ID's across the different platforms. I don't really want to go down any 'iframe' type route if at all possible, tho' reality may dictate this as being an option. I'm possibly (naively) imagining that i could simply invoke the mvc functions directly from the php app with some sort of 'session' variable being passed for authentication. pretty tall order or pretty straightfwd?? cheers jim

• Ajax UpdatePanels SetFocus issue

  I set the AutoPostback property of a textbox to True so I can process the TextChanged event on the server and, based on what they typed in the textbox, appropriately display a message in an update panel. The problem is, when the partial screen refresh is performed, no control on the screen has focus. 99% of the time, when the text in the textbox is changed, it is because the user has tabbed forward, and so, to limit the disruption in the lost of focus, I perform a "Focus" call on teh next control in the tab sequence. For the most part, this works OK, but of course, is disputive if the user is tabbing in the reverse order or has used the mouse to set the focus to another control. In these situations, the focus would be set to the next control even though the user was trying to set focus elsewhere. OK, that sucks. Now what I consider the bigger problem with calling the focus method on the server: In IE, it works OK, but in Mozilla Firefox and Chrome, setting the focus causes a repositioning of the scroll bar, even though none is necessary because the control is already in view. I realize that I could switch to doing AJAX web service calls, but these darn Updae Panels are so convenient if used in moderation. is there anyway to use updatepanels and not have these focus/scroll issues?

• Data synchronization using XMPP

  Hi: I'm looking for some insight/advice on synchronizing data over XMPP. I've never developed anything for XMPP before so excuse me if some of my questions seem ridiculous. Basically, what I have is a decentralized social network. Each person has it's own Web site (or server) with a unique URI (one domain could host many servers). Each of these servers can have many clients. E.g., a desktop application, mobile application, etc. What I would like to accomplish is near real-time synchronization/communication between client and server, e.g., I update something on my desktop application, I see it change on my Web site. My server and client code is Python. So, I would like to make use of SleekXMPP if possible (it's license seems to have changed to MIT). I was thinking, and here is where I need advice, that each server would register an account at a dedicated XMPP server, e.g., [email protected]. and then I could use different resources for clients [email protected]/client1, [email protected]/client2, etc. If anyone can register any username, then maybe I also need some intermediate service (since it's decentralized, i'm not sure how to control registrations). Another option, I guess, is that each server runs it's own xmpp server. Assuming, that was all worked out, if I want to broadcast messages to all my resources (except the sending one), how do I do that? Do I have to subscribe to myself? This also seems like a good candidate for publish-subscribe, let me know if you think that could work and what the design/flow of that process would be. thanks :)

I include the package in my JSP as follows: <%@ page import="com.mypackage.fact.*" %> I deploy my web site and JSPs into Tomcat 6 as a WAR file. I include myjar.jar in that WAR in WEB-INF/lib but that doesn't work. I tried putting myjar.jar in my tomcat/lib folder, but that doesn't work either. I have bounced the server several times between changes. I have read a whole bunch of questions on here which say "put it in WEB-INF/lib" but that isn't working, so I'm asking my own question. Where do I need to put common JAR files so they get picked up by Tomcat?

  I'm trying to take a datacontract object that I received on the server, do some manipulation on it and then return an upcasted version of it however it doesn't seem to be working. I can get it to work by using the KnownType or ServiceKnownType attributes, but I don't want to roundtrip all of the data. • Rails: Multi-Step New User Signup Form (FSM?)

  I've read the "Create Multi-Step Wizard" in Advanced Rails Recipes. I've also read and re-read the documentation for the updated FSM I'm using called Workflow, and looked here and here. The Advanced Rails Recipe focuses on records (quizzes) that already exist, and doesn't cover creating new ones. The Workflow docs don't cover any code for controllers or views, so I've no idea what to do with all this model magic, and the last two links barely touch on implementation either. From the aforementioned resources, I have a good understanding of what a FSM in Rails is and how to play with it in the console or IRB, but I've got very little direction or understanding how to implement one into my Rails app. What I would like is this: a simple, multi-step user signup process. Step 1: User enters in their critical details (with validations). Step 2: User enters in their search criteria, for their profile (with validations). Step 3: User agrees to the Terms of Service (with validations). Step 4: User is greeted by a confirmation page, including a link that takes them to their newly created account. I'd also like full navigation between the steps and full capture (saves to the database) with each transition. Can someone please give me a clear implementation of something similar to this? I would LOVE an example app that includes a multi-step signup process where I can look at the code (FULL source code--models AND controllers and views) under the hood, but I've been unable to find anything like that.   I am wondering what the difference between HttpContext.Current.User.Identity.Name.ToString.ToLower and Thread.CurrentPrincipal.Identity.Name.ToString.ToLower. Both methods grab the username in my asp.net 3.5 web service. I decided to figure out if there was any difference in performance using a little program. Running from full Stop to Start Debugging in every run.   Hi, I am new to Tomcat, and trying to run a simple HelloWorld servlet. I have installed Tomcat 6, and Jdk1.6 on Mandriva Linux, set CLASSPATH and JAVA_HOME. I checked in the $CATALINA_HOME/logs/catalina.out log-file and found the following error, which occurs every time I start tomcat service. • File Storage for Web Applications: Filesystem vs DB vs NoSQL engines

  I have a web application that stores a lot of user generated files. Currently these are all stored on the server filesystem, which has several downsides for me. When we move "folders" (as defined by our application) we also have to move the files on disk (although this is more due to strange design decisions on the part of the original developers than a requirement of storing things on the filesystem). It's hard to write tests for file system actions; I have a mock filesystem class that logs actions like move, delete etc, without performing them, which more or less does the job, but I don't have 100% confidence in the tests. I will be adding some other jobs which need to access the files from other service to perform additional tasks (e.g. indexing in Solr, generating thumbnails, movie format conversion), so I need to get at the files remotely. Doing this over network shares seems dodgy... Dealing with permissions on the filesystem as sometimes given us problems in the past, although now that we've moved to a pure Linux environment this should be less of an issue. What are the downsides of storing files as BLOBs in MySQL? I guess that it would massively increase the database size and reduce the effectiveness of caches, but are there other problems? Do the same problems exist with NoSQL systems like Cassandra? Does anyone have any other suggestions that might be appropriate?

• SVN Serve, Missing a Directory

  I'm sure this is an asinine question, and I blame myself for not fully understanding how the SVNSERVE process works. I have an SVN repo, but it needs to be moved to a server within a clients cloud. I did this a while back and ran into the issue of the SVNSERVE.exe process not getting set to the right directory. I have the SVNSERVE.exe process running as a windows service and pointing to the right directory. There are two other repos there that are serving out fine in the same directory. I copied out the new directory just like I did with the others, but I'm getting the error "No repository found". I thought that SVNSERVE just looked at that directory and served out the repositories that were there, but I have had a hard time finding more information about that. I thought it was a Windows permission problem, but I set the whole folder to be full control to EVERYONE, so that's not it. I feel horrible I didn't fully understand this problem the first time I fought it, but it's late on a Sunday night and clients are yelling. Anyone know what I'm missing? Thanks. EDIT: It's specific to the repository. I tested the same process with some of the other repos we have on our server and when I copied them up, they worked just as expected. This bug is breaking me and I wish I could provide more details, but that's all I know. I'm going to try to do an SVN Dump instead of an XCopy and see how that goes. I'll let you know.

  I need to automatically download the current Wall Street Journal Prime Rate and load the data into my database. What is the best method for downloading this data automatically? I have come up with three possible solutions for doing this: Scrape a HTML web page from WSJ. Parse a RSS news feed from WSJ. Use some API that I haven't found from WSJ. Regarding solution 1, although I don't like solution 1 since it could easily break, it's the only one that I have worked out from end to end. It appears I can scrape this page with a WebRequest / WebResponse and read the text in this code: <tr> <td style="text-align:left" class="colhead">&nbsp;</td> <td class="colhead">Latest</td> <td class="colhead">Wk ago</td> <td class="colhead">High</td> <td class="colhead">Low</td> </tr> <tr> <td class="text">U.S.</td> <td style="font-weight:bold;" class="num">3.25</td> <td class="num">3.25</td> <td class="num">3.25</td> <td class="num" style="border-right:0px">3.25</td> </tr> Regarding solution 2, although I can implement a RSS reader solution, I don't see a way to reliably anticipate verbiage for changes in the Prime Rate. Therefore, I don't think this is as safe or reliable a way to get the data as solution 1. Regarding solution 3, I haven't found any published API's for checking money rates like the Prime Rate. If anyone knows of a web service or other API for checking money rates, then please let me know.

• White space problem while using php proxy

  Hi, I'm using a php web proxy with my URL already encoded and keep having getting a malformed request error once I have any text after a %20. Any idea why this would be happening? • Monotouch threads, GC, WCF

  Hi This is a question about best practices i guess but it applies directly to my current MT project. I'm using WCF services to communicate with the server. To do this i do the following: services.MethodToCall(params); and the asynch: services.OnMethodToCallCompleted += delegate{ //do stuff and ting }; This can lead to issues if you're not careful in that variables defined within the scope of the asynch callback can sometimes be cleaned up by the gc and this can cause crashes. So - I am making it a practice to declare these outside of the scope of the callback unless I am 100% sure they are not needed. Now - when doing stuff and ting implies changing the ui - i wrap it all in an InvokeOnMainThread call. I guess wrapping everything in this would slow the main thread down and rubbish the point of having multi threads. Even though I'm being careful about all this i am still getting crashes and I have no idea why! I am certain it has something to do with threads, scope and all that. Now - the only thing I can think of outside of updating the UI that may need to happen inside of InvokeOnMainThread is that I have a singleton 'Database' class. This is based on the version 5 code from this thread http://www.yoda.arachsys.com/csharp/singleton.html So now if the service method returns data that needs to be added/updated to the Database class -I also wrap this inside an InvokeOnMainThread call. Still getting random crashes. So... My question is this: I am new to thick client dev - I'm coming from a web dev perspective where we don't need to worry about threads so much :) Aside from what I have mentioned -are there any other things I should be aware of? Is the above stuff correct? Or am i miss-understanding something? Cheers w://
