  • Toshiba Satellite L630 broken after bios update

    I have Toshiba Satellite L630, which has been broken. It had no more OS installed in it. All the disk partition were cleared into one single empty unformatted partition. So I begin to install windows XP on this laptop. Apparently, win XP's driver support for this laptop is very limited. So I have to find almost all important driver (display, sound, etherned, wireless etc) on the net and install it manually one by one. So I start googling, and I got some driver download page from several Toshiba's website (the global version, the europe, asia, etc). Pretty hard to find the exact drivers, but I managed to find pretty good drivers. It's all works quite fine, although still have a few glitches. But everything turned into a big mess when I downloaded the "BIOS Update", which is also listed on Toshiba's official driver directory site. When I installed it, it show a big red warning sign telling me not to do anything while flashing the BIOS . I follow that instruction prudently. The process was finished, and that update BIOS software (it is InsydeH2O BIOS) told me that the BIOS has been succesfully updated and the computer need to restart. So I restart the computer. This is where the problem appear. I can no longer boot to my laptop. The booting process seems to be able to enter windows for a moment (it shows the windows XP loading screen), and then suddenly it just got that hateful blue screen and then instantiy restarts the machine. It goes on a loop. Boot bios - enter XP - blue screen - restart. I can't even try to reinstall my win XP again. Evertime the machine tries to boot to win XP CD, it got the same blue screen as I gets when loading from HDD. Many google search results said that I should open the laptop cover and try to clear CMOS with some kind of jumper or something. Or to unplug/re-plug the CMOS battery. Do I really need to do that? Is there anyway I could do without disassembling my laptop? I read some tricks about booting from USB device but I can't get the exat tools that I need to do that thing... I wanted to start C++ development in the same IDE so I installed Autotools Support For CDT, C/C++ Development Tools, C/C++ Library API Documentation Hover Help plugins.I have included #include "cocos2d.h" in my HelloWorldScene.h file now when writing the below statement cocos2d::CCSprite * ccSprite; I am not getting auto completion bar(template proposals) on writing like coco and pressing Ctrl + Space from my keyboard. What can be the problem?This might help you solve my problem. Please check here. This is what I got after clicking Right Click Project - Index - Search for Unresolved Index. But I have added all includes check here. I think this is causing problem in Content Assist. What should I do in this case? Inclusion seems proper.

(Windows Server 2008 Enterprise 64 bit SP2). Any idea please in resolving this problem would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  • Internet not working on a VirtualBox Linux machine

    I installed VirtualBox on a Windows 7 PC and installed Xubuntu (Ubuntu with XFCE) on it. Now on the Windows, I am connected to the internet through a LAN which automatically authenticates to connect to the network(because its my work computer). I have also installed the guest additions on this virtual machine (Xubuntu). I tried both NAT and bridging to set up internet connection but I still cannot connect to the internet. For NAT: The browser doesn't say website not found but it keeps trying to load it forever and the network status monitor (the one provided by VirtualBox) doesn't show any green light (no incoming packets). For Bridging: Same as for NAT but the network status monitor shows incoming packets and outgoing packets. But internet still doesn't work. I tried a lot of different things but none worked.

    I am trying to experiment with GNUS email in Emacs, in Windows (EDIT: x64 bit). I've got it to work in Ubuntu, but struggling with it in Windows. I have downloaded and unzipped the gnutls-3.0.9-w32-bin package, but am not sure what to do with it. I have tried putting it in Program Files (x86), which is "the same directory as Emacs". I have tried putting it in the emacs-24.3 folder. I consider merging all the folders in between the two, but am hesitant as that seems a difficult troubleshoot attempt compared to my knowledge on these matters. I think Emacs needs to somehow see the gnutls binaries and/or dlls. My knowledge is limited on this. I've also struggled to understand PATHs for sometime now, and am not sure if that approach is relevant here. FYI, the emacs directory contains folders labeled bin, etc, info, leim, lisp and site-lisp. The gnutls directory contains folder labeled bin, include, lib and share. Hmm, now I'm finding lots of links on adding paths. Still, I'm skeptical that I would only add gnutls.exe path, as it seems the dlls are needed. Some additional data for Ramhound's first comment I have been attempting the (require 'gnutls) route. This seems to be the most relevant parts in the log: Opening connection to imap.gmail.com via tls... gnutls.c: [1] (Emacs) GnuTLS library not found Opening TLS connection to `imap.gmail.com'... Opening TLS connection with `gnutls-cli --insecure -p 993 imap.gmail.com'...failed Opening TLS connection with `gnutls-cli --insecure -p 993 imap.gmail.com --protocols ssl3'...failed Opening TLS connection with `openssl s_client -connect imap.gmail.com:993 -no_ssl2 -ign_eof'...failed Opening TLS connection to `imap.gmail.com'...failed I am not sure what "in stallion" means. Emacs seems to have installed itself in program files (x86), so I assume it is 32 bit. I can try and figure out how to double check, but did not realize I would get such fast response time, and am headed out right now. I will try merging the files later tonight?

  • OpenDNS servers initial response is very slow

    I've got a Time Warner cable ISP package (RoadRunner), and the modem they gave me doesn't allow me to specify which DNS servers to use; it always uses whatever the upstream dhcp server gives it. I prefer to use OpenDNS on my home network, so i've configured a couple of my PCs manually in the Windows adapter settings for IPv4 such that their IP addresses are obtained via DHCP, but the DNS server settings are fixed to the OpenDNS server IPs. Now, when I startup Windows on these PCs, it always takes 2-3 minutes to start receiving responses from the DNS servers; any request before that times out. While not debilitating, this is quite annoying. Any ideas why this might be happening?

  • Dual-boot two instances of the same copy of Vista using same serial number

    I have a single Vista OEM registration number which has been registered to the current hardware (single partition only), and I want to use it for two instances of dual-booted Vista... Because both Vistas will be running on the same hardware, (and obviously only one at any one time), will they both be recognized as genuine to Windows Update etc... ie will they both pass the Windows Genuine Advantage requirements? .. The only difference between the hardware involved will be the partition. Also, are there any special issues with dual (tripple?) booting two instances of Vista and also one Ubuntu OS?

    I am trying to install Microsoft Exchange 2007 to a Windows Server 2003 as a member server. I already have a Windows Server 2008 as my domain controller. I'm having a hard time figuring out what is needed to prepare the machine for Exchange 2007 installation. My specific question is: While following the procedures here in the TechNet Library , do I still need to go through with the section "How to Prepare Active Directory and Domains" and do the following commands if I am making it a member server and NOT a domain controller? ie.. setup /ps setup /p /on: setup /PrepareDomain: Thank you.

  • Recommendations for screen-capture tool that retains menus and mouse pointer

    There are several screen capture tool questions already on this site, but I think I have a slight tweak to the usual. I'd like a handy screen capture utility that can: Run in Windows 7 Capture a sub-region of the screen Show the current state of the mouse cursor and any active menus I'd like to use it for writing docs that refer to specific application menu items. I like the built-in snipping tool in Windows 7, but the act of using it dismisses my menus, and it doesn't get the mouse cursor either. Do any such tools exist? EDIT: Ahh, I wasn't familiar with the "delayed capture" options of these tools, but they all seem to fit the bill. Thanks!

    I have a Marvell Yukon integrated NIC and i have installed the WOL package on my freeBSD-based NAS. I'm trying to wake my PC using the command "wol M:A:C:A:D:D:R". Command line spits back that it is "waking" however nothing happens. I found no reference to WOL whatsoever in BIOS and i enabled Magic Packet WOL in windows on that interface. Also double-checked MAC addr and that i entered it in the correct format in "wol". I'm on Windows 7. What next? =/

  • Win 2008 single server development environment (architecture)

    I have a few questions about a test development environment that I’m setting up on this server: Intel Core i7-920 Quadcode incl. Hyper Threading 8 GB DDR3 RAM 2x 750 GB SATA-II (probably software RAID 1) The server is going to support max 5 users, maybe 10 when stressed. I was hoping that I could run all the following products on the same server: Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 w/ IIS SQL Server 2008 x64 (R2 when released) Team Foundation Server 2010 Sharepoint Foundation 2010 I know this sounds overkill, but remember that this is for development purpose and testing. This is not a production environment. My question if this will be possible at all? Should I run it all on one Windows 2008 installation, or should I run it in multiple virtual environments using Hyper-V? What do you think?

  • Win 7 BSOD stucks at dumping

    Recently Ive been getting frequent bsods, which always gets stuck at dumping without finishing it, with most of them showing no error messages. This never happened before i upgraded to new rams, but 2 passes of memtest86 turned out fine. Tried reinstalling windows, problem still there. Tried initiating a manual crash, and that did create a successful dump. The SSD win 7 is on doesn't seem to have any problems, crystaldisk says its healthy. Varied the cpu multiplier between stock and +500Mhz, crashed regardless. Left voltage control to auto. Im fairly sure its a hardware problem, just cant pinpoint which specific part(s). The specs- Windows 7 x64 (1 day old) 955 x4 BE c3 (running at stock) (3.5 years old) GA-970A-D3 (1.5 years old) Gigabyte 6950, unlocked to 6970 (still at 6950 speeds) (<3 years old) 2x4GB 1600 CL9 HyperX Blu (running at 11-11-11, default motherboard setting) (<1 month old) Plextor M5s (around 5 months)

  • Test disk recovery

    I had a 250GB hard disk having several NTFS partitions. The disk was a dynamic disk (created in windows). Now when I formatted windows (which was in another disk), the dynamic disk is shown as offline. I tried using the testdisk tool to recover the data and created a partial backup. Testdisk is able to list all partitions in the disk. All partitions are shown as type 'D' (Deleted). I want to change the 'D' to 'P' (Primary), 'L'(Logical), 'E' (Extended) appropriately and build a new partition table. If I can write the partition table to disk, the disk will be of 'basic' type and should be readable in all OS. What should be the appropriate partition types? I checked the files on the partitions and no OS was ound. So none of the partitions were bootable. Will randomly selecting P,L,E hurt the data in anyway?

    Hello Apologies if this is already answered, its a tricky one to search for! We are using split DNS for a domain used internally. For the outside nameservers, theres a simple zone with: @ IN A ip.ad.dr.ess www IN A ip.ad.re.ss This works fine externally. Internally its a windows server 2003 DNS server, so the www a record works fine, but I cant figure out how to add that primary record (using at symbol @ in bind). Can anyone help with how to get the same results from windows dns? I just want to be able to add a record for domain.com without being forced to use something.domain.com Thanks, Edit: This domain is not the "main" AD domain, and not used for logins etc.

  • How can give group in active directory folder access by group policy

    I have windows server 2003 64bit and my clients running on windows xp 32bit. My clients have user rights so they can't install any program. I have some programs needs admin rights for example I have French dictionary without admin right the program will not work properly. I don't want go to each PC and login with admin account then go to program folder located in programs files to give full permission to the group. Is there a way to add them folder in group policy so I can force all the PCs to have full access on the folder? Thanks you in advance.

  • Pet Peeves with the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace

    Have you ever noticed how something things just gnaw at your very being. This is the case with the WP7 marketplace, the Zune software, and the things that drive me batshit crazy with a side of fries. To go. I wanted to share. XBox Live is Not the Centre of the Universe Okay, it’s fine that the Zune software has an XBox live tag for games so can see them clearly but do we really need to have it shoved down our throats. On every click? Click on Games in the marketplace: The first thing that it defaults to on the filters on the right is XBox Live: Okay. Fine. However if you change it (say to Paid) then click onto a title when you come back from that title is the filter still set to Paid? No. It’s back to XBox Live again. Really? Give us a break. If you change to any filter on any other genre then click on the selected title, it doesn’t revert back to anything. It stays on the selection you picked. Let’s be fair here. The Games genre should behave just like every other one. If I pick Paid then when I come back to the list please remember that. Double Dipping On the subject of XBox Live titles, Microsoft (and developers who have an agreement with Microsoft to produce Live titles, which generally rules out indie game developers) is double dipping with regards to exposure of their titles. Here’s the Puzzle and Trivia Game section on the Marketplace for XBox Live titles: And here’s the same category filtered on Paid titles: See the problem? Two indie titles while the rest are XBox Live ones. So while XBL has it’s filter, they also get to showcase their wares in the Paid and Free filters as well. If you’re going to have an XBox Live filter then use it and stop pushing down indie titles until they’re off the screen (on some genres this is already the case). Free and Paid titles should be just that and not include XBox Live ones. If you’re really stoked that people can’t find the Free XBox Live titles vs. the paid ones, then create a Free XBox Live filter and a Paid XBox Live filter. I don’t think we would mind much. Whose Trial is it Anyways? You might notice apps in the marketplace with titles like “My Fart App Professional Lite” or “Silicon Lamb Spleen Builder Free”. When you submit and app to the marketplace it can either be free or paid. If it’s a paid app you also have the option to submit it with Trial capabilities. It’s up to you to decide what you offer in the trial version but trial versions can be purchased from within the app so after someone trys out your app (for free) and wants to unlock the Super Secret Obama Spy Ring Level, they can just go to the marketplace from your app (if you built that functionality in) and upgrade to the paid version. However it creates a rift of sorts when it comes to visibility. Some developers go the route of the paid app with a trial version, others decide to submit *two* apps instead of one. One app is the “Free” or “Lite” verions and the other is the paid version. Why go to the hassle of submitting two apps when you can just create a trial version in the same app? Again, visibility. There’s no way to tell Paid apps with Trial versions and ones without (it’s an option, you don’t have to provide trial versions, although I think it’s a good idea). However there is a way to see the Free apps from the Paid ones so some submit the two apps and have the Free version have links to buy the paid one (again through the Marketplace tasks in the API). What we as developers need for visibility is a new filter. Trial. That’s it. It would simply filter on Paid apps that have trial capabilities and surface up those apps just like the free ones. If Microsoft added this filter to the marketplace, it would eliminate the need for people to submit their “Free” and “Lite” versions and make it easier for the developer not to have to maintain two systems. I mean, is it really that hard? Can’t be any more difficult than the XBox Live Filter that’s already there. Location is Everything The last thing on my bucket list is about location. When I launch Zune I’m running in my native location setting, Canada. What’s great is that I navigate to the Travel Tools section where I have one of my apps and behold the splendour that I see: There are my apps in the number 1 and number 4 slot for top selling in that category. I show it to my wife to make up for the sleepless nights writing this stuff and we dance around and celebrate. Then I change my location on my operation system to United States and re-launch Zune. WTF? My flight app has slipped to the 10th spot (I’m only showing 4 across here out of the 7 in Zune) and my border check app that was #1 is now in the 32nd spot! End of celebration. Not only is relevance being looked at here, I value the comments people make on may apps as do most developers. I want to respond to them and show them that I’m listening. The next version of my border app will provide multiple camera angles. However when I’m running in my native Canada location, I only see two reviews. Changing over to United States I see fourteen! While there are tools out there to provide with you a unified view, I shouldn’t have to rely on them. My own Zune desktop software should allow me to see everything. I realize that some developers will submit an app and only target it for some locations and that’s their choice. However I shouldn’t have to jump through hoops to see what apps are ahead of mine, or see people comments and ratings. Another proposal. Either unify the marketplace (i.e. when I’m looking at it show me everything combined) or let me choose a filter. I think the first option might be difficult as you’re trying to average out top selling apps across all markets and have to deal with some apps that have been omitted from some markets. Although I think you could come up with a set of use cases that would handle that, maybe that’s too much work. At the very least, let us developers view the markets in a drop down or something from within the Zune desktop. Having to shut down Zune, change our location, and re-launch Zune to see other perspectives is just too onerous. A Call to Action These are just one mans opinion. Do you agree? Disagree? Maybe not, but at least let’s get the word out that we really want to see some change. Egypt can do it, why not WP7 developers!

  • Powershell overruling Perl binmode?

    I have a Perl script which creates a binary file while scanning a very large text file. It outputs to STDOUT which I redirect in the commandline to a file. To optimize it I'm making changes then seeing how low it takes to run. On Linux for this I use the "time" command. On Windows the best way to time a program seemed to be to PowerShell's "measure-command". This seemed to work fine but I noticed the generated files were larger. On examination I found that the files generated from within PowerShell begin with a BOM and contain CRLF pairs! My Perl script has a "binmode STDOUT" directive and does work correctly in a normal dosbox. Is this a bug or misfeature in PowerShell or measure-command? Has it affected others creating binary files by means other than Perl? Googling hasn't turned anything up so far. I'm using Perl 5.12, PowerShell v1.0 and Windows XP.

  • Windows Phone 7 Prototype 002: Animated Page Transitions + Writeable Bitmaps

    Motion is a key part of WP7 application development. Without motion, the WP7 UI is just a bunch of text. Not nearly as exciting. To delight users, you can add some transitions between pages.  The sample app includes some storyboards to animate between two pages. Other people have noted that you can just use the transitioning content control form the SIlverlight toolkit. Peter Torr also had a nice animating frame control in his mix demo code (his blog has some other great code samples for WP7 app dev). I took some of those concepts and the code from the TransitioningContentControl to make a new animating frame control. In this prototype, the frame takes a snapshot of the old content and the new content using writeable bitmaps and animates the snapshots and then replaces those with the actual page. The benefit is smoother animation on pages with lots of controls. Otherwise, if you have a large panorama, it might not animate that cleanly.  Like the other solutions based on the TransitioningContentControl, you can centralize all the animations in one place and not have to handle them on each individual page. Peters code also had a nice snippet for choosing the animation based on the navigation direction so you could just have a forward / backward animation and not have to do anything on each page. You could also probably add some more advanced transitions using pixel shaders or make an default no transition state if you wanted to have some specific animation on a page where individual  controls transitioned out differently like some of the WP7 shell apps.
