• Renaming server - sql 2008 server instance affected

  Will changing the computer name on which SQL Server 2008 is installed on affect SQL Server in anyway? Or will changing the computer name be transparent to SQL Server? For example: I plan to install Windows 2008 Server and naming it "BobStage". Next I will install SQL Server 2008 R2 and restore a few DB's. Finally I plan to rename the windows machine to "BobLive". Will me renaming the computer's name affect SQL Server's instance ID/name and possibly break something?

  Last week I decided to use TeamViewer VPN to administer software on a server behind a firewall using RemoteDesktop. It was easy to configure to start-up with the system and make VPN available on the other side but now it fails to connect at the step shown below: The remote machine is running Windows Server 2008 R2. • Can't uninstall/reinstall .NET Framework 3.5 with DISM

  My net framework 3.5 is broken. Verification tool (http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2008/10/13/8999004.aspx) says it's OK, but its not. Net framework 3.5 can't be just uninstalled/installed on Windows 7. But you can do this by add/remove windows features. For me this doesn't work, I receive thus (not very helpful) error message ... "An error occurred. not all of the updates were successfully uninstalled" I found DISM tool which does exactly same, but have log. And now: DISM /online /disable-feature /FeatureName:NetFx3 1603 error. And log: http://pastebin.com/4jBkEiT6 Any ideas how to do it?

• Which driver for "ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650" in a laptop?

  We have some HP laptops here that comes equipped with a video card that identifies itself as "ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650", like this one. However, which drivers do we choose? As far as we can tell, HD 3650 is desktop cards, or at least there are no drivers listed for that series with "Mobility" in their name. If I pick the following on the ATI Driver Download page: Graphics Windows Vista 32-bit Edition Mobility Radeon Then the dropdown for the card model contains X300, X600, X700, X800, X1300, X1400, X1600, X1800, 9600, 9700 and 9800 models, but no "HD" nor "36xx series". However, if I change to just "Radeon" for the last selection there, I can find a "Radeon HD 3600 Series" model in the list. Also, if I pick "Windows 7" as the operating system, I can find a "Mobility Radeon HD 3000 series" card, but no 3600. So, which one to pick? The main reason I ask is that they all seem to have some kind of problem installing, so neither seems to be the right one (they all crash with "Catalyst Install Manager has stopped working".)

  Is it possible to assign a security group in windows 2008 a specific DHCP scope? Meaning, let's say we have 2 groups, employees and managers in the superscope Company. Assuming that each user is distinctly in either group and there are no overlaps, would it be possible to assign members of the security group employees a dhcp address in the range 192.168.1.0/24 and managers 192.168.2.0/24 ? The DHCP server is the same server. This is on Windows SBS 2008 if it makes any difference If it is possible, how do you go about setting it up. TIA

• SSD Fresh Does Not Start

  I recently installed a new 60GB SSD as my primary hard drive and re-installed Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. I then installed SSD Fress from Abelssoft to optimize Windows to run on the SSD. It seemed to install okay, but when I try to run the utility, its splash screen appears briefly before it quietly closes. No errors are displayed; the utility just fails to launch. I have run SSD Fresh on another SSD-equipped Windows 7 Pro x64 computer in the past without any problems. Does anyone know what might be preventing the program from running? I tried shutting down the Spybot Resident and disabling the firewall and virus scanner with no luck. I also tried running the tool as administrator; I even tried reinstalling it, running the installer as administrator. No luck. • optimizing file share performance on Win2k8?

  We have a case where we're accessing a RAID array (drive E:) on a Windows Server 2008 SP2 x86 box. (Recently installed, nothing other than SQL Server 2005 on the server.) In one scenario, when directly accessing it (E:\folder\file.xxx) we get 45MBps throughput to a video file. If we access the same file on the same array, but through UNC path (\server\folder\file.xxx) we get about 23MBps throughput with the exact same test. Obviously the second test is going through more layers of the stack, but that's a major performance hit. What tuning should we be looking at for making the UNC path be closer in performance to the direct access case? Thanks, Kirk (corrected: it is CIFS not SMB, but generalized title to 'file share'.) (additional info: this happens during the read from a single file, not an issue across multiple connections. the file is on the local machine, but exposed via file share. so client and file server are both same Windows 2008 server.)

• Accessing localhost on IIS7 from another computer on the network

  I recently upgraded computers to Windows 7 Professional and am running IIS7. When I'm on my computer I can easily access localhost through my web browser but when I try from another computer on my network (replacing localhost with my computer name) it doesn't work. I also tried using "computername.domain.com" and still no luck. I can access other computers running Windows XP and IIS 5 but I'm having no luck accessing my own from another computer. I checked and my IIS7 has anonymous users enabled. Am I missing any other setting? Is this an IIS7 thing or am I missing a setting? Thanks in advance!

• How to delete system default printer forms?

  On Windows there are system default printer forms which can't be deleted from the Print Server Properties dialog. Is there some other way they can be removed? We are never going to use page sizes like Envelope, B5(JIS), US Std Fanfold, etc. and I'd like to save users (and myself!) from having to scroll through a big long list of noise. Our print servers are Windows Server 2003 if that makes any difference. thanks.

• Purple Screen then Black Screen while Booting from CD or Windows Install

  Whenever I try to run Ubuntu from my internal CD drive, I see this screen minus the Ubuntu Text: Then the screen goes black, not even the internal light stays on. Sometimes it restarts itself, other times the black screen is indefinite until I restart the laptop myself. I'm on an HP Quad-Core AMD A8-3500M APU with 8 GB RAM and a Radeon AMD 6620g Discrete-Graphics Card. (HP dv6-6145dx) This is my first time using Linux, I am not too technically-inclined so any simplification would be welcomed. I am good at following technical instructions though which is how I was able to partition my hard drive and change the boot order to allow the internal CD drive first. Thanks in advance!

• Burning Xvid and Dvix Files problems

  Hi I am using windows 7 ultimate 64 bit edition and Nero 8. Recently I noticed that every time I go to nero and burn a dvix/xvid file as a data DVD and try to play it in a dvd player that supports these types it does not load up and play. I then go to my XP machine with Nero 6 on it and burn the exact same file as a data DVD and it works in the exact same dvd player. I am not sure why this is happening? I am not sure if it is windows 7, nero 8 or my actual dvd burner that is the problem. How should I go about and figure out what the problem is? Thanks

• Server 2008 blue screen after login - no desktop

  I came into work today to find that our Windows Server 2008 used as a terminal server for the Thin Clients was not loading the users desktops. What I have found out is that when I login via Remote Desktop, after applying user settings, it gets to the stage of 'Preaparing your desktop', but then the screen just goes blue. I have tried rebooting several times with no luck, and logging in locally at the server with no luck. Does anyone have any suggestions? I do not think that it could be a virus attack as we run antivirus on the server with OpenDNS filtering. Yesterday a software restriction policy was set up to only allow programs in the following directories to run if that could be the problem, although it was working fine all day yesterday. • How can I play my MP3 files through my stereo system?

  Here's the situation. Like many others I have my entire CD collection ripped to my PC, along side other music I've acquired through iTunes or Amazon MP3. Also like many others the speakers at my PC are underpowered, and likely included in my monitor as an afterthought. This is fine for most use: system sounds, YouTube, etc. Even games sounds and music. But I'd like something a little better for when I really want to listen to music. And I have it; in the next room — barely 25 feet away as the crow flies — sits a nice 400 watts stereo system. The stereo supports MP3 CDs, so up to this point I've just kept a few CD-RW disks around to keep most of my collection available. But it's time to move on to something a little more sophisticated. What are my options for using the MP3 files available on my computer as an input for this stereo? Some notes: I want to be able to control what song the stereo is playing without having to go to the PC, including setting up and retrieving playlists. Ideally this should even be able to wake the PC from sleep mode to start playing. I primarily use Windows Media Player on the PC (which runs Windows Vista). However, the files themselves live on a server running Windows Server 2008, and so I could also install something on the server and run everything from there. The axillary input on the stereo is unfortunately limited to a 1/8 inch stereo mini-plug. I'm loath to run wires across two rooms, and I'm considering moving the stereo to the garage at some point. Therefore a wireless solution that can easily cover about 100 ft or so is preferred. I already have a Wi-Fi network ready, but it's secured so anything using Wi-Fi should make it easy to set up security. Bonus points for doing it in under $85 shipped at Amazon (I'm hoping to pay for this via $85 worth of Amazon gift cards). I know this a pretty tight budget, so just getting close is okay. Bonus points for something that remembers multiple profiles (keep my favorite songs separate from the wife's). Bonus points for a remote that can also replace my stereo remote, so I only need one device to control everything. I'm not holding my breath on this one given my price range, though. Bonus points if I can also use for Internet radio. Doing some research on my own as well.   I'm not able to run a PHP enabled web site under Apache on Windows XP if the path to DOCUMENT_ROOT contains accented letters. I'm not referring to the script file names themselves but to any folder in the path components.   I use an old copy of altaris SVS (link to lifehacker - symentec gutted the old altaris website) for testing applications - it lets me capture the changes one executable makes, or changes to a whole system into a bundle, and remove the whole bundle once i'm done. However symentec bought over altaris and apparently killed off the product, or merged it into some other bigger product. I'd like the same fine grained control SVS had, something that just does this, and preferably free (for personal use) or not too expensive. I'd like this to run on at least windows XP 32 bit, but windows 7 and 64 bit support would be nice too

• can't configure openfire

  I'm trying to setup openfire on one of the servers here and I've gone through the windows installer, installed the service, started the service and I can't connect to the admin console. If I go to http://127.0.0.1:9090 (or http://127.0.0.1/index.html) all I get is a blank page. I also tried running the GUI instead of the service, and it said that it was listening on 127.0.0.1:9090 and when I navigate there or click "launch admin" I still get a blank page. What could be the problem? It's a windows server 2k3 machine with IIS running (runs a couple of other sites). edit openfire 3.6.4 I installed on my local machine without problems, so it's obviously something on the server that's causing it. There is no firewall installed on that server so I'm not sure what would be stopping it.

• Will disk cloning resolve bad stripes on RAID?

  Hi. We have a logical RAID1 drive in bad stripes state, which kept that status even after replacement and rebuilding of both drives, and gives errors in Windows logs about failure of writing to disk. IBM support suggests erasing and re-creating the RAID, then re-installing the Windows. The resulting down-time unacceptible for us, so we want to clone the RAID (via Acronis True Image), erase and re-create the RAID, then dump the cloned data back. Following IBM logic where RAID erasing and re-creation resets the whole RAID meta-data, this should clear the bad-stripes status, and start from a blank page. Question is if such strategy is possible, and will produce the desired effect? Any idea is appreciated - thanks in advance!

  My Windows 7 laptop can connect to our Wi-Fi signal, I can sign in on Yahoo! Messenger, but I can't go to any site. I can access the Net on other devices. The issue started a few weeks ago, so I've been troubleshooting since then in vain. There's no virus, and I already used System Restore. In Wireless Network Connection Status, the received activity is greater than the sent activity. I turned off Windows Firewall and still no Net access. My ping tests: How do I fix this?

  Is there an easy way to have my work laptop connect to a home workgroup for file sharing with my other PCs, but then easily switch back to connecting to my work domain when I'm at work? I have the following setup: Windows 7 Home Premium Server/HTPC 2 Windows XP laptops 1 Vista laptop (Work) The work laptop connects to a work domain, the remaining computers are on a home workgroup for sharing files/printer. Also is it possible to share files over my LAN while I'm connected to the work domain, but at home? I've tried Live Mesh, but my 2 home laptops are very slow and don't work well with it. I also use Dropbox, but I'd like to be able to share larger files. I may be missing a simple solution here...
