• How to remove geoclue-master?

  Looking in System Monitor I saw a process called geoclue-master. As far as I can tell, this reports my precise location to applications and the internet. This computer is sitting in the same office all the time so I have no need whatsoever for such a thing, and would rather have the memory and processor cycles that this unnecessary service uses up - however small - free for things that I do need and want. I could not find instructions for disabling and removing this service so I renamed the file, but then the calendar disappeared from the notification area. Is there a way to remove this service but leave the calendar? I'm using 11.10.

• Quantal upgrade broke my gnome-shell!

  Just updated to quantal 12.10, and Unity works fine, but and I can't get gnome-shell to work :( Some symptoms: when using gdm as the default, it decided to display everything in chinese. When attempting to log in, it accepts the password, and then seems to crash when trying to load my desktop, and seems to restart gdm and send me back to the login screen when switching to lightdm as the window manager, it gets a little further (and in english), bringing up a desktop, but a broken one -- the propeller key doesn't bring up a menu, there's no menubar or notifactions area. i can do a few things, like bring up a terminal with ctrl+alt+t, and launch eg firefox from there, but not much else. I have tried uninstalling gnome-shell, deleting /etc/gdm, and reinstalling Any other suggestions? Which log files to look at for example?

• How to bridge the gap between university and job requirements

  I study physics and computer science and both studies include minor programming tasks whereas larger tasks are only (potentially) a part of larger projects like for your thesis. When I look at job postings for scientific jobs e.g. in the area of HPC they usually ask for "extensive programming skills in C/C++ and HPC" or the like. This is what I would like to achieve, but frankly I don't know how. I don't mean to mourn, but you can imagine that studying physics/CS means having a busy schedule so I couldn't even work part time as a research assistant to get practice without negative influence on my grades. The second problem is that I lack ideas on what to code in my spare time. I would like to do something useful but even for open source projects you apparently need a whole lot of time and depending on the type of software a lot of experience to be useful. I would be grateful for any advice you can give me.

  I'm currently trying to use JavaScript to find out how far down the page the user has scrolled; for Firefox 8.0, the keyword is pageYOffset. To say things mechanically: The page has a certain height. In Firefox, the useful object is document.documentElement.scrollHeight. The browser's visible area also has a certain height. In Firefox, the object is window.innerHeight; in IE8, document.documentElement.clientHeight. I need to know where the user is in the page vertically; in other words, how many pixels down the page the user has scrolled. Does Webkit have a DOM object that refers to the current scroll position?   Rencently,I was trying to save textures of 3D particles so that I can reuse the in 2D rendering.Now I had some problem with alpha channel.Some artist told me I that my textures should have unpremultiplied alpha channel.When I try to get the rgb value back,I got strange result.Some area went lighter and even totally white.I mainly focus on additive and blend mode,that is: ADDITIVE: srcAlpha VS 1 BLEND: srcAlpha VS 1-srcAlpha I tried a technique called premultiplied alpha.This technique just got you the right rgb value,its all you need on screen.As for alpha value,it worked well with BLEND mode,but not ADDITIVE mode.As you can see in parameters,BLEND mode always controlled its value within 1.While ADDITIVE mode cannot guarantee. I want proper alpha,but it just got too big or too small consider to rgb.Now what can I do?Any help will be great thankful. PS:If you don't understand what I am trying to do,there is a commercial software called "Particle Illusion".You can create various particles and then save the scene to texture,where you can choose to remove background of particles.   I'm currently working as an IT Administrator but I'm thinking of making a slight career change into programming. I want to focus my time and effort into learning some web based languages but feel is it achievable when working full time to expect to make much progress after a long days work? I love to read, but this is sometimes a hindrance. I have read on some resources that you will never make much progress unless you quit your 9-5 and dedicated 6 months to getting a fundamental understanding. Any feedback would be great.   I have a programming background in php/python/java for 5 years and I know MySQL and PostgreSQL. Currently in our company the MSQL Business Intelligence person is leaving his job in 4 months. I am thinking of trying to go to his place, at least try as I want to move in Business Intelligence field in SSRS and SSIS. I just want to know that is it possible for me to get my head around those things in 4 months because I have no idea how they work and how hard it will be for me to pick up those things. Can I do that? I just want to know from experienced people if I can move towards that field? At least how should I start? In my area there are shortages of person, so once I know the stuff I can get into junior jobs easily but I want to know from experienced people.

• How to fix indicator icons from being cut off?

  A friend of mine just upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 and the icons for the indicator applets all appear cut off on both the bottom and the top. See picture above. Note that the icons in the old systray/notification area on my friend's panel all still display correctly, so it's a problem with indicator clearly. My question: How can this be fixed? (I have a 10.04 system that I did a fresh install on, and I don't have this issue, so I'm guessing it's an issue with upgrading. Thanks.

• Flikering line on top of display

  I just bought a new Dell Inspiron pre-installed with Ubuntu 11.10. All was fine until I updated the OS. Since then, I have this flickering line at the top of my screen and it won't go after rebooting or changing the screen resolution. It gets really annoying. I don't know which update did this. I tried reinstalling the image from Dell, and it worked fine until I applied the updates. I tried to take a screen shot but it does not show. The line seems to be outside the desktop area. Help please... Thanks!

• How do I fix the paths of my website?

  I have Joomla 2.5.7 in my client's server updated recently from 1.6 to 1.7. I did not make that site but I am responsible for it now. I prefer to make a site from zero. Now users area clicking on the menu options and when joomla send them to a meta-url like http://iap.pa.gov.br/acervo they get the message 404 The requested URL /acervo was not found on this server. Would that be because they moved joomla folder from the root to root/iap (name of the site)? If it is, what is the configuration to adapt to that new folder?

• Bluetooth issues after Saucy upgrade

  I upgraded from Raring to Saucy, and now my bluetooth is giving me problems. First, even though I have a bluetooth inbuilt in my laptop, which I prefer to keep off unless I am using it, there is no greyed out bluetooth icon in the notification area. This was present in Quantal, but was missing in Raring too. I was hoping to get this fixed in Saucy. Seems otherwise. Secondly, and more importantly, in saucy when I am turning on my bluetooth, it immediately (or within seconds) turns off automatically, without giving me any time to even make the device visible. Please help!

• What Does It Usually Mean for a Feature to be "Supported"?

  I'm currently working some testing for a particular area of an application. I had to write some automated tests for a particular feature but due to the circumstances, this was not easy to do. When I asked one of the other testers about it, he mentioned that the same features exist in a sister application our company produces but isn't documented anywhere (end-user documentation or otherwise). He also said that the feature doesn't typically get tested at all in the sister application and isn't usually tested in the application I work on. Apparently this feature isn't heavily used but removing it would require a fair bit of work so the benefit-cost ratio doesn't work out. All of this has left me with some questions. Other than "The documentation says so" or "We told the client it is", what usually makes a feature "supported" versus an unsupported feature?

• Networking Icon Keeps Disappearing

  Almost every time I unlock my computer the networking icon and the Bluetooth icons are missing from the panel. They also disappear if I disable networking with the 'hardware switch', even though before they would just switch to a 'disabled' look. I know I can get the networking one back by running nm-applet, but I'd rather just find a way to make it stop disappearing. What causes this? This is on 12.10 64-bit, if it matters. UPDATE: I ran it from terminal, and got this: $ nm-applet ** Message: applet now removed from the notification area ** Message: PID 31340 (we are 28924) sent signal 15, shutting down... And then it exited. So it thinks it's supposed to quit...? I haven't been able to figure out what process had that ID.

• Multiply mode in SpriteBatch

  I have a "lighting" texture (black background with white or colours for lights) that I want to draw as a multiplcation operation. SpriteBatch.Begin can specify BlendState.Additive, but there's no BlendState.Multiplicative. I also tried the solution in this answer, but it didn't work -- even when I (incorrectly?) changed the code to work with XNA 4 style ColorDestinationBlend, I ended up with the final solution being inverted (black area where the light is, everything else is visible). I initially thought of a shader, but I couldn't get shaders to work with MonoGame, so I'm falling back to SpriteBatch.

• Workflow of sharing code for small teams

  Problem is, we have developed a small CMS, that is different per implementation (currently). Of course development of this is never complete. Sometimes, we are working on more than one project that implements it (by copying-pasting the code files of the CMS to each project), and we add a new feature that we want to share on other projects as well (these can be small ones too, ie a custom ajax JSON controller - we use MVC) What we want to do is quickly and uniformly share the code with all other projects, via a version control system (or something similar), and generally organize the workflow as we know this isn't a very good workflow that we have. What would you suggest? Also, at the momment, the software we use is Visual Studio 2010, so we are strongly considering TFS, but even if we get it we still don't know the ideal workflow, or even if TFS supports what we want to do. Edit: Also note, we have specific implementations that have modifications over the CMS base that we want to KEEP only in the project area. (ie: a specific feature that we DONT want to share with the base CMS code)

• How can I improve these online java programming puzzles I wrote for my (middle/high school) students?

  I'm teaching some middle and high school students programming right now, and I found that some of them really liked online programming puzzles. So I created http://www.kapparate.com/coder/ , and right now there's 4 categories of puzzles. All the puzzles are set up right now so that variables are pre-initialized, and the user plugs in some code in the middle. For example, the problem might say these are pre-initialized: int x = ????; int y = ????; int z; and then the program might ask the student to write the final line of code: z = x + y;. Now I know I could go a long way in improving the usability of this site (like having an area that lists the pre-defined variables), but I was wondering if this concept seems sound. I know some sites have kids fill in functions, but not all of my students know what functions are yet, and I'm trying to introduce online programming puzzles before that.

• More complex learning source for C# .NET [closed]

  By complex I don't mean more difficult but including a larger area of possibilities cover. I've started a few years ago with PHP and the transition from learning the syntax of the language and the basic logical structures to working with databases, including JavaScript and so on was very short. And now I'm more interested in studying working with languages like Java/C#. Recently I spend a lot of time reading and writing some simple console applications, I've read almost 2K pages for C# programming and still don't know how to connect to database for example. Just for info I'm interested in web development, socket programing and live streaming, don't know if I'm exceeding myself too much writing that but despite that I want to find some books/internet sources where I can extend my current knowledge of C#/.NET, start using database queries, maybe try something more complicated webwise.

• A Single wireless network is not showing up in Ubuntu that used too, and other devices have no issue finding or connecting to it

  Up until about a week ago I could connect to my wireless, but now I suddenly can't. Every other wireless in the area show up in the network manager. My kindle can connect to it, my friend can connect to it (in windows) without having connected to it before. My other netbook (Samsung NC10) can connect to it, but my other Samsung N150 now cannot even see it. I have tried deleting the old auto entry for it in the network manager Tried disabling and enabling both the networking and the wireless through the network indicator. Disabled the networking through the hardware shortkut key thing [fn] + [F9] Attempting to connect to it as if it was a hidden network. I'm at a loss, how would I go about debugging and unborking my computer?
