• Is adding a bit mask to all tables in a database useful?

  A colleague is adding a bit mask to all our database tables. In theory this is so we can track certain properties of each row across the entire system. For example... Is the row shipped with the system or added by the client once they've started using the system Has the row been deleted from the table (soft deletes) Is the row a default value within a set of rows Is this a good idea? Are there other uses where this approach would be beneficial? My preference is these properties are obviously important, and having a dedicated column for each property is justified to make what is happening clearer to fellow developers.

  I might be missing something here but am unable to understand the true purpose of link shortener services like bit.ly or is it just a lot of hype! Truly if you type nyti.ms on your URL bar on the browser it takes you to www.nytimes.com, but still what is so hard in typing "nytimes.com! which is far much comprehensible to read and understand leave alone to remember! Does shortening URL serve any purpose in web development? Why should someone want use obscure shortened URL?

  I've begun watching a series of first year lectures from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Australia, and I'm a bit perplexed by the instructors explanation of how an SRAM gate works. I realize this isn't exactly "programming-related" but since it comes from a series of lectures relating to computing and programming, I thought StackOverflow may be able to help (reddit failed me entirely). In this lecture beginning at around 32:12, Richard (the lecturer) tries to explain how a "latch gate" works within SRAM. Although his students seem to keep up, I feel I'm missing something crucial which is preventing the concept from really "clicking" in my brain. • MySQL on Windows-7 (64-bit) on 0.0.0.0:3306 rather than 127.0.0.1:3306

  I've just installed the latest production release of MySQL (64-bit) on my Windows 7 box. It was a straight vanilla install, using all defaults; but phpmyadmin can't see it at all. MySQL is configured as a service to start automatically, and I know it's running because the MySQL GUI tools work correctly. Doing a netstat -a, I see TCP 0.0.0.0:3306 Marks-Netbook:0 LISTENING when I'd expect to see TCP 127.0.0.1:3306 Marks-Netbook:0 LISTENING I don't know if this is the reason phpmyadmin can't connect, but suspect that it is probably the case. Can anybody confirm whether this is the likely cause, and/or suggest how I can reso;lve this?

  Hi I am using Linq2Sql and want to bind an objects field (which is enum) to either a bit or a int type in the database. For example I want have a gender field in my model. I have already edited the DBML and changed the Type to point to my enum. I want to create Radio buttons (which I think I have figured out) for gender and dropdown lists for other areas using the same idea. My enum looks like this public enum Gender { Male, Female } Mapping between DbType 'int' and Type 'Project.Models.Gender' in Column 'Gender' of Type 'Candidate' is not supported. Any ideas on how to do this mapping. Am I missing something on the enums.

• Converting a 16 bit tiff file to something viewable online?

  I need to take a 16 bit .tiff file and make it viewable on my website. To even view .tiff files many browsers require plugins. I found a software that could convert them to .jpg files but I was wondering if there is a way to do this independently. I am making my website using Ruby on Rails. I must be able to do the conversion from the website because the whole point of the website is to upload large folders of .tiff files and display them in an online slideshow. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

• Best memory settings for eclipse 4.2 (STS 3.1) on Windows 7 64 bit?

  I apoligize in advance if this question is indeed too subjective as SO warns me. My workstation has 8 gb of ram and runs windows 7 64 bit. I use the Spring tool Suite (3.1) but as soon as i am starting to open and modify the spring config (.xml) files, STS becomes incredibly slow. I already tried switching off "build automatically" and to increase memory settings but no luck.   I'm attempting to call LinkedIn's API and store Network Updates. Each update has a Unix timestamp that I'm retrieving as a string variable from the REST XML response. I want to convert the string timestamp to a mysql datetime format. The date() function accepts an integer as the second argument for time to be converted. However, I'm on Windows 32 bit PHP and the integer type for this platform is limited to 2147483647. $timestamp = '1293714626675'; // sample pulled from linkedin $timestamp = (int) $timestamp; // timestamp now equals 2147483647 $mysqlDatetime = date('Y-m-d H:i:s', $timestamp); // produces incorrect time Is there a better method of creating the mysql datetime in PHP? I realize that I can convert it upon insert into MySQL however, that would require changing other dependent code.

• Not enough free disk space

  I'm new to Ubuntu and I'm getting an error in software updater. When I try and do my daily updates, it says: The upgrade needs a total of 25.3 M free space on disk /boot. Please free at least an additional 25.3 M of disk space on /boot. Empty your trash and remove temporary packages of former installations using sudo apt-get clean. I tried typing in sudo apt-get clean into the terminal but I still get the message. All of the pages I read seem to be for experianced Ubuntuers. Any help would be appreciated. I'm running Ubuntu 12.10. I want to upgrade to 13.04 but understand I have to finish these first. • Siteminder webagent installation failed

  Hi All, I have tried to install a 32 bit Netegrity(CA) siteminder web agent on 64 bit Windows server 2003. The IIS server is V 6.0 and so it is also 64 bit. But the problem is while configuring the agent it is showing metabase error. Previously 64 bit web agent was installed on the same server and removed. The IIS V 6.0 is also reinstalled on the server. But after that when I tried to install 32 bit siteminder web agent, it is showing an error as said above. Is it possible to install a 32 bit siteminder web agent on 64 bit IIS?   Hi, I am using SQLite for the unit testing and might use it as a database for local development/staging. The System.Data.SQLite has basically 2 versions: x86 and x64. Correct one should be used for the specific platform. I have 64 bit Win7, other guys in the team might use 32-bit OSs. The server's platform is not known at this stage. If I use 32-bit version of the assembly on 64-bit platform I get BadImageFormatException: Could not load file or assembly 'System.Data.SQLite'. I believe similar will happen trying to use 64-bit assembly on 32-bit platform. So my question is what is the best way to reference the SQLite assembly so that it does not depend on the platform and people can just use it? It is ok to use 32-bit version of assembly on a 64-bit platform (Maybe there is a switch for that somewhere?). Thanks, Dmitriy.

• IIS 7.5 refuses to load 64-bit assembly - possible CAS problem?

  Hi, I just downloaded the Orchard CMS, opened it up in VS2008 and hit F5: Everything runs fine. I then created a website in IIS 7.5 and pointed it to the web project's directory and set up permissions correctly (I hope). I downloaded the 64-bit version System.Data.SQLite as suggested here: Orchard Work Item 14798 and here: SO: Could not load file or assembly 'System.Data.SQLite'. The site runs in Full Trust. When I point my browser to the site running through IIS I get Could not load file or assembly 'System.Data.SQLite, Version=1.0.65.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=db937bc2d44ff139' or one of its dependencies. Failed to grant minimum permission requests. I don't know much about Code Access Security (if that is even what's at play here), so I am at a loss here. What am I doing wrong / not understanding / not seeing? How do I provide appropriate permissions and to whom / what? Is there any hope of ever deploying this application to a hoster where I am only allowed to run in Medium Trust? Any help, pointers or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. NOTE: the question is not why this initially worked when run through Cassini. The answer to that question is contained in the answer to the SO question referenced above.

• How to compile a C DLL for 64 bit with Visual Studio 2010?

  I have a DLL written in C in source code. This is the code for the General Polygon Clipper (in case you are interested). I'm using it in a C# project via the C# wrapper provided on the homepage. This comes with a precompiled DLL. Since switching to a 64bit Development machine with Visual Studio 2010 and Windows 7 64 bit, the application won't run anymore. This is the error I get: An attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format. This is because of DLLImporting the 32bit gpc.dll, as I have gathered from stuff found on the web. I assume this will all go away if I recompile the DLL to 64bit, but can't for the love of me figure out how to do so. My C skills are basic, in that I can write a C program with the GNU tools, but have no experience with various compilers / processors / IDEs etc. I believe I could port this to C#. By that I mean I trust myself to actually pull it off. But I'd prefer not to, since it is a lot of work that I'd prefer a compiler to do for me ;)

• Issues with reversing bit shifts that roll over the maximum byte size?

  I have a string of binary numbers that was originally a regular string and will return to a regular string after some bit manipulation. I'm trying to do a simple caesarian shift on the binary string, and it needs to be reversable. However, I think when it rolls over being representable by one byte it's irreversable. On the test string "test!22*F ", with an addFactor of 12, the string becomes irreversible. Why is that and how can I stop it?

I am planning to port the host application to 64 bit platform and once it is ready, I intend that both 32 bit and 64 bit client processes should be able to use the shared memory setup by the main 64 bit host application. The original code written for host x32 application uses "size_t" almost everywhere, since this differs from 4 bytes to 8 bytes as we move from x32 to x64, I am looking for replacing it. I intend to replace "size_t" by "unsigned long long", so that its size will be same on 32 bit & 64 bit. Can you please suggest me better alternative? Also, will the use of "unsigned long long" have performance impact on x32 app .. i guess yes? • How to INF mod: Replacing 32bit dlls with 64bits

  I've got a driver setup for 32 bit: An INF file and an x86 folder with two 32 bit dlls. I need to replace these 32 bit dll files with 64 bit ones. I just simply overwrite 32 bit files but no lock. How can I make 64 bit version of the driver? • [OT a bit] Flex+JEE what is it good for?

  Ok so sorry for being, I guess, a bit off topic but still I think this is the best place to ask. My new semester just started (don't worry I won't ask you to do my homework) and this time we have a rather cool subject about www programming in general where we have to do a web service, web abb - whatever as long as it's "web". Here's the problem though, my team and I want to do it with Flex and JEE but we don't have much experience about what are they actually used for. I mean we know you can do virtually anything with it, but we don't really want to lose time on doing something useless. My first idea was to do a "brainstorming" 3D room/service - a place where people could log in have a video conference, a whiteboard, a place to upload pictures everyone could see, some toolbars for google, youtube etc. plus some other features which would make real-time brainstorming easy when you can't get everyone in one place. But is Flex+JEE really suitable? I mean I'm 99% sure it's doable but is it really worth doing it in Flex+JEE or was the whole purpose of JEE completely different? @EDIT: well this was only one of our ideas obviously. I do know the basics of JSP, Servlets, JPA etc. of course but yeah the main goal of this project is to get some actual experience. The problem is we don't really know is it worth doing something like let's say a social network (something like extended facebook) for gamers (doesn't really matter if it already exists) in JEE or would it only look ridiculous (because PHP or whatever would be a far better choice)? Bottom line is that we are wondering are only large scale applications (for banks etc.) written in JEE or is it good for anything (even the smaller projects)?

• How to define 2-bit numbers in C, if possible?

  For my university process I'm simulating a process called random sequential adsorption. One of the things I have to do involves randomly depositing squares (which cannot overlap) onto a lattice until there is no more room left, repeating the process several times in order to find the average 'jamming' coverage %. Basically I'm performing operations on a large array of integers, of which 3 possible values exist: 0, 1 and 2. The sites marked with '0' are empty, the sites marked with '1' are full. Initially the array is defined like this: int i, j; int n = 1000000000; int array[n][n]; for(j = 0; j < n; j++) { for(i = 0; i < n; i++) { array[i][j] = 0; } } Say I want to deposit 5*5 squares randomly on the array (that cannot overlap), so that the squares are represented by '1's. This would be done by choosing the x and y coordinates randomly and then creating a 5*5 square of '1's with the topleft point of the square starting at that point. I would then mark sites near the square as '2's. These represent the sites that are unavailable since depositing a square at those sites would cause it to overlap an existing square. This process would continue until there is no more room left to deposit squares on the array (basically, no more '0's left on the array) Anyway, to the point. I would like to make this process as efficient as possible, by using bitwise operations. This would be easy if I didn't have to mark sites near the squares. I was wondering whether creating a 2-bit number would be possible, so that I can account for the sites marked with '2'. Sorry if this sounds really complicated, I just wanted to explain why I want to do this.

  My /boot is at 100%. When I run aptitude search ~ilinux-image I'm getting loads of unused images. When I try to delete one of them (after checking which one is currently in use by doing uname -r), e.g apt-get autoremove linux-image-3.2.0-44-generic I get: Reading package lists...
