• Why ethernet calbes must be ended with specific arrangement

  I just accepted that ethernet cables CAT 5 and more must be ended with specific arrangement. I learned when I ending my cables to take attention that either end must be in same arrangement(568A or 568B ). Sometime I get stacked with my fellow servant that they claim that Cable should work if just arrangement at both side are same even if it is not in 568A or 568B layouts. My experience said that it is not true, but I am now looking for some technical argument to prove that.

• Speeding up Connection Between Computer and Wireless/Bridged Router

  Hey everyone, I looked through other questions, but didn't find useful responses. Our main computer has a dl speed of 6 Mbps, but some of our other computers are getting only 40-200 Kb! The router is wireless, but all computers are connected using a Netgear Wall-Plugged Bridge XE102, which transmits information via the building's powerline. It can't be the hardware itself, however, because some computers still manage decent speeds. The computers afflicted are running on Microsoft XP Service Packs 2 and 3, but so are computers that are totally functional. These speeds severely impede on productivity and are excruciatingly frustrating when trying to cram in time in the early hours. Could it be an issue with the computer? Location? Router?   My windows 7 x64 PC/server worked fine until I installed a brand new seagate SATA hard disk (2 TB). My first disk was a IDE Maxtor (250 GB). I tried to use it as a secondary drive leaving the maxtor as primary and, when I put the computer in sleep state, on wake-up the SATA disk is not recognized anymore until next reboot. Now I'm trying to set it as primary disk (I copied the old HD contents with HD clone), when the computer goes in sleep state, on wake up it doesn't see the disc thus causing my system to crash. I tried the following: BIOS update (Asus M2V motherboard) but the situation worsened as the system didn't wake up from the sleep (with both my HD's) Reinstalling the drivers Bios changes Microsoft Hotfix KB977178 that seemed to address exactly my problem but gave me "The update is not applicable to your computer" message. Disabling hybrid sleep but no results.

• Storage setup for large files

  I need to store over 200TB of data (all types, biggest being video files) and be able to access it over a local network. The files will be accessed for editing or searches. I don't need versioning, but a setup that would keep me safe from harddrive failures would be nice. Right now the content is on different harddrives, some external drives, some regular. I don't exclude the possibility of buying new/extra drives if necessary. If they will ever be exposed to the web, it wont be to the public, but just a couple of people. I have no idea what to buy to make this happen. I see some NAS solutions over the internet like this http://www.bestbuy.com/site/a/2266043.p?id=1218317764591&skuId=2266043 but the storage is not enough, plus it doesn't seem to be scalable. • Wi-fi signal with keeping the internet cable

  So the situation is that I have Ethernet cable which provides internet to my computer. Thing I want is to have wi-fi connection in my house and Ethernet cable (like I have before) to use for my PC. I will use wi-fi for my laptop and mobile phone. I think I need router for that and I'm looking at Asus RT-N16 (suggested in Coding Horror) for it, but I am not sure. Is it the right thing for me and I will be able to get wi-fi signal and keep the Ethernet cable? I guess the system will be that current cable goes into router, router provides wi-fi signal and gives back new cable... or something like that. Thanks in any advice!   Within a minute of connecting to my remote Linux server through SSH, my session times out and I cannot contact the server until a few seconds have passed. Meanwhile, I'm connected to other servers without interruption. This is only happening when I establish connection from an hotel wireless AP. When I connect from my phone's Internet, the problem does not occur. Does anyone know what might be causing these unusual timeouts?

The point is to temporarily join two apartments in a building for gaming and file sharing, and the holy grail would be: PCs on network A can access PCs on network B and vice-versa (file shares and gaming). Data between networks shouldn't take a trip through the internet (broadband upload speeds are severely capped) A network's internet access should continue working if the joining cable is disconnected with minimal configuration changes. • Building a network at home, what cables to use (if any)?

  My house is currently in ruins and am building it. While doing so, I wanted to design a home network. My main objectives are surfing and HD streaming. The house is one-level, 100 sq/m (about 300 sq/ft), and one of the rooms is a safety room with Reinforced concrete walls. About a year ago, when I started planning, I thought about putting Cat 6 STP cables in the walls and create network points in the rooms. Should I use STP or FTP? I heard that STP is a problem regarding connectors and stuff. Is it really beneficial? Will it work OK if I transfer the wire together with the telephone line? Should I maybe go with WLan and count on 802.11n to enable me to stream HD across the house? is 802.11n that good?

  OK, So a little background; I've been using Windows Home Server as a Backup Appliance, Media Server and Share Server at home for some time. I decided it was costing me allot of juice so very early on added the "Lights Out" add-on to ensure it was only running as and when needed. I'm now looking to switch to a Linux based server and I'm looking for a similar tool/set of tools for advanced power management. Now the question; Anyone got any all-in-one suggestions (i.e with client parts for both Windows and Linux and a server part for the Linux server), or can anyone simply verify that I'll need to set-up all the individual bits for this myself separately? (A tool similar to "[SmartPower][2]" but for linux would be a great start)

  I m much of a newbie to client/server applications and networking.I am currently starting up a project in which we are planning to create an application or something like a website accessible only to clients in that LAN network.We want the server to upload videos so that the clients can view them whenever they want.Also the clients can upload videos.Also we want some kind of registration to provide authentication to avoid bogus videos.Also additional features that can be added on later like comment section,ratings,Groups etc. Basically what we want is to build mini-youtube but with one major difference , we want the application to be LAN based. • Accurate way to check latency between Server ?

  Hi, First of all, I hope my post are is posted in the right section . Below are something i got confused hope you one can help. My business partner 's IP server are in: Sanjose, CA , and I am looking for a datacenter which give the least latency to that IP. I found 2 . 1st datcenter is in San Francisco, CA . 2nd data center is in Newyork. Then I do the ping from each datacenter to the my partner's IP. 1st datcenter's result: 75ms 2nd datacenter's result: 2ms I 've done multiple time, 2nd datacenter always give better result. Now my question is: Isn't the 1st datacenter suppose to give better result, since their location are closer ? How come the result produce different, what is the accurate way to check latency ? • Asus RT-N66U forgets USB-Printer

  about a week ago I bought the new Asus RT-N66U as the new Router in our little company. There are about 5 clients and 2 printers. There's a USB-only printer as well, therefor we bougth a router with USB-printer sharing. The setup and everything works smooth, but then after one day, and I still haven't found out why, suddenly the printer dosen't show up in the list of connected devices in the routers webinterface anymore. Of course I loose the possibility of printig, even though the printer shows up as "online" in the system settings. Can anybody guess the reason for this problem? Thank you very much

  I'm developing a Python WSGI website. I'm running a Paste development server on my Mac (OS X 10.7) on port 8080. I want to test the website on some other devices and OSs I have connected to the local network (Windows 7 VM, iPad, iPhone, etc.), but am having trouble. I turned on Web Sharing, and am able to access that (port 80) without a problem on all my devices. Port 8080 still doesn't work. An excerpt from my Paste configuration: [server:main] use = egg:waitress#main host = 127.0.0.1 port = 8080 The OS X firewall (Settings - Security - Firewall) is off. I have no other firewall software installed. My network is through a Linksys WRT160N router. I haven't done much with the settings, so most of them are at their defaults. I've been Googling all morning, but can't find a solution.

Currently I start my VM (a VirtualBox VM running CentOS), run ifconfig to determine the VM’s current IP. I then take that IP and map it my Host machine’s host file so that I can access the VM’s webserver from the Host. I feel that this is not an efficient way to connect to my VM’s webserver because each time I connect to a new network (a few times a day) I need to repeat the IP look up and host file update, and sometimes restart the VM's network service.

• LAN full of public ipv4 addresses - How to filter it?

  The answer to my question maybe is not that hard but anyways, I do not know what to do. So, I just got in a new job in a Univerisity and I found out that the network (the LAN) is full of public IP addresses. Seriously, the whole LAN (probably more than 150 hosts) has it' own internet IP address and I don't know how to manage it. I have a very good experience using iptables (Linux firewall) in a NAT'ed environment. But then how should I proceed in an environment where all my LAN is working with a bunch of public IP addresses? Should I just use the "forward" rules and ignore the NAT rules or is there any other issue in such environment which I should take care? Can I add a firewall between the router and the LAN in order to produce packet filtering for these public IP addresses in my LAN or will this just not work? Thanks!
