    Hello there, I've offered an out-of-job girl to help her study programming (with an MCSD as the ultimate goal) - and she has no progrmming knowledge. The idea is that she'll study from books and I"ll help. Help- I need a gentle introduction to programming book, very easy, very practical, very hands-on and up to date. Optimally would be for the .Net 4.0 MS enviornment (C#,Visual Basic) but other alternaitves (Jave, Python etc.) are OK.

    I already have a solid knowledge of Object-oriented PHP as well as HTML/Javascript/MySQL plus a basis in Java. Now I would like to implement my projects in an efficient way, whether it is a web project in PHP or an Android application.     Considering that we're all constantly learning, we've all got to come across a point where we learn something just awesome that improves our code or parts of it significantly. The question is, when you've learned some new technique, strategy or whatever, do your or should you go back to code that you know works, but could be so much better/maintainable/faster/generally improved and implement this new knowledge? I understand the concept of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" but when does that become losing pride in code you've already written and what does it say for refactoring.

  • Basic string and value functions in Objective-C for iPhone

    I have very little programming knowledge; only a fair bit in Visual Basic. How do I take a value from a text field, then do some simple math such as divide the value by two, then display it back to the user in the same field? In Visual Basic you could just do txtBoxOne.text = txtBoxOne.text / 2 I understand this question is more than one question and is very basic stuff, but I need to get my head out of Visual Basic and into where I should be :)
