• Broken Links in different browsers

  Hi I'm having problems with our website, http://www.accessiblehomehealthcare.com, which is a wordpress 2.7 (version). All of a sudden our RSS links broke on the right side, which has happened before and I fixed it within 5 mins. Now, when I fix it, it doesn't look right in different version of I.E. or Firefox, I have I.E. 8 and Firefox 3.6.15 and it looks good for the most part, but there are a few parts where the links are broken. One browser the links would look ok but go to another page and the links or logos would be broken. Certain parts of the website should be static(identical) to the other pages of the site, but if a link is broken on one page, its perfect on another page. I was wondering was there a secret code for wordpress to keep the sites compatible with all browser versions or is there a bigger issue???? Any help or suggestions will help???

• Calculating instantaneous speed and acceleration for a simple Car software model

  I am trying to model a speedometer and tachometer for a simple software model of a car dashboard. I want this to be relatively simple, so for my purposes I won't likely simulate variables such as drag (or, assume that drag is a constant). But I would like to know the general formulas for: 1) Calculating the RPM, depending on a position of a graphical slider representing the accelerator. 2) Using this information to find the instantaneous speed (or, magnitude of instantaneous velocity?). I am not sure, in the case of 2), what other independent variables I need to consider. Do I need to consider the frequency of rotation of the wheels (assuming a fixed radius), in addition to the RPM? If anyone can give me a rough explanation plus relevant formulas, or alternatively direct me to other trusted resources online (I have had a hard time sifting through info and determining the accuracy), it would be much appreciated.

• Fixing Broken Links to Entries on This Blog

  I just found out that some built in redirects that were in place on the Oracle Blogging platform were removed, and as a result there is a good chance that if you were directed to an entry on this blog that is a bit older you'll get a 404 error. Luckily there is a simple URL hack that you can use to fix this - switch the "year/month" part for "entry" and then remove the ".html" from the URL. So for example instead of :  https://blogs.oracle.com/shay/2010/10/passing_parameters_to_adf_appl.html use: https://blogs.oracle.com/shay/entry/passing_parameters_to_adf_appl I fixed the links on my "Archives" page so you can also look for the entry by title there. Sorry for any inconvenience.

• tail stops displaying in case of a log rotation

  I have to tail the log of a server (servicemix) and the log rotation is enabled. As soon as the rotation happens, tail stops displaying. I did some investigations and it is a bug in Debian : Debian Bug Report. The bug has been around for a long time ago. Does anyone knows if this bug in Ubuntu is to be fixed? I'm on Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit. I don't have to mention that this bug is total hell! Every time I have the problem, I have to interrupt the command tail and re-execute the command!

• Build Controller status Unavailable issue in TFS2010

  I ran into this problem few days back, I was not able to run the builds because the Build Controller was showing Status as Unavailable. It was showing the below exception: There was no endpoint listening at http://fullmachinename:9191/Build/v3.0/Services/Controller/2 that could accept the message. This is often caused by an incorrect address or SOAP action. See InnerException, if present, for more details. After trying out few things, I looked at below Build Service Properties.   Then, I did below modifications to the Build Services Properties: 1)      Changed the Local Build Service Endpoint(incoming) from http://machinename.domain.com:9191 to http://machinename:9191 2)      Changed the Connect to Team Project Collection (outgoing) from localhost to machine name. http://localhost:8080/tfs/defaultCollection to http://machinename:8080/tfs/DefaultCollection   After that Started the Build Services and it fixed the issue, the Build Controller was showing Available Status and was able to run the builds.

  Sometimes it's very confusing how Sharepoint 2010 group creation works Here's a scenario we have been facing from a long time wrt groups in SharePoint 2010 We had requirement of creating a two custom groups followed by creating a custom site through programmatically, For the most case the scenario works as how it is excepted to work. but, out of 1/100 site creation process the groups creation fails, which means we were able to access the group and users associated with it through programmatically. but, when it comes to UI stand point if you try to access the specific group page from the site permissions page - SharePoint returns a BLANK WHITE Page... BLANK WHITE Page... nothing else... Ain't is this a Sharepoint 2010 issue. or anybody had this problem and fixed it. Kindly share your thoughts

  When developing software, I often have a centralised 'core' library containing handy code that can be shared and referenced by different projects. Examples: a set of functions to manipulate strings commonly used regular expressions common deployment code However some of my colleagues seem to be turning away from this approach. They have concerns such as the maintenance overhead of retesting code used by many projects once a bug is fixed. Now I'm reconsidering when I should be doing this. What are the issues that make using a 'core' library a bad idea?

• kubuntu wallpaper settings disappear

  To render my system useable after upgrading to 11.10, I had to abandon gnome and install the KDE window manager. This is mostly fine, but the desktop wallpaper slideshow works for a few minutes and then gets reset to the default (fixed kubuntu splash background). I can start up the slideshow again by right-clicking on the background and re-entering all the Desktop Settings, but then it just disappears again after a while. What could be causing this? Oops!   What I failed to realize was that KDE apparently uses an independent wallpaper setting for each desktop. I have 12, so some were set to the slideshow but others were still set to the default. Being accustomed to one common wallpaper setting for all desktops, I misinterpreted this as a global reset. Sorry!

• Problems with Silverlight 3 Bitmaps

  As many people move to Silverlight 4, some of us that still have old projects in Silverlight 3, I havent found any solution to the below problem just yet, just a workaround for now. Still when using Visual Studio 2008 and Silverlight I receive this error on BitmapImages, something that looks like got fixed in Visual Studio 2010 and Silverlight 4, I havent tried in VS2010 and Silverlight 3. • Translating error messages from an external API?

  If I am localizing a piece of software that uses an external API, how should I handle error messages that originate in this API? I do not control the API, I only consume it. The error responses are not very structured: some contain error codes, some contain verbose details in the text, others almost nothing. Some errors can be fixed by the user (incorrect configuration), some are caused by the external service (server overload), some could be caused by a bug in my software (of course, this would be very unlikely...). I would like to provide a smooth experience to my end-users, so they know what went wrong and what they can do to fix it. What is the best strategy to use here? (This is a generalization of a question from the WordPress Stack Exchange. I thought it would be worth re-asking here, because it is not limited to WordPress plugins.)

• Agile bug fixing - what's the preferred process for testing?

  When a bug is fixed, the dev set its status to "resolved" and the bug is reassigned back to the person that created it. In our case this is usually the product owner - we don't have dedicated testers. But what's a good process for controlling how/when the PO tests the software? Should he be given the latest build after each bug is resolved/checked-in? Or what about every morning? Or should he only receive a build at (or close to) the end of the iteration, to include all of that iteration's new functionality and bug fixes? We are using TFS by the way.

• Correct Rotation and Translation with a 4x4 matrix

  I am using a 4x4 matrix to transform verts in a shader. I multiply an identity matrix by a rotation matrix by a translation matrix. I am trying to first rotate the verts and then translate them, however in my result, it appears that the verts are being transformed and then rotated. My matrix looks something like this: m00 m01 m02 tx m10 m11 m12 ty m20 m21 m22 tz --- --- --- 1 I am not using OpenGL's fixed function pipeline, I am multiplying matrices on the client side, and uploading the matrix to a GLSL shader. If it helps, I am using my own matrix multiplication code, but I have recreated this problem using matrices on my graphing calculator, so I don't believe my matrix code has errors.. I'll include a visual aid if needed.

• Flash Webcam non responsive

  I've got the same problem as this gentleman: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/flashplugin-nonfree/+question/176541 Where the webcam settings / access does not work at all / is completely unresponsive in Ubuntu 11.10. I've tried webcam access in Facebook, Google+, my own code + a number of tutorials/demos and none work. What happens is the settings dialogue is completely unresponsive. Clicking tabs or buttons does nothing. In the question linked to a suggested answer is to run Unity 2D. Unfortunately this does not work for me (the exact same thing happens). I've also tried Gnome 3 which also does not work. Note that it is only the webcam settings that don't work. YouTube videos and annoying banners work just fine. Does anyone know of a workaround for this (except going back to 11.04) or if they've fixed this in 12.04? - also, are any of you experiencing the same thing?

• no back light on my acer aspire 5734z

  I installed Ubuntu (12.04) on my acer aspire 5734z and the back light stopped working. I have tried the fix by editing the grub file posted on here a couple of days ago but that hasn't fixed it. I have also looked for hardware drivers but that didn't get me anywhere. When I hook up an external monitor it works fine but i have been unsuccessful getting the laptop display to light up. • Goals are not registering in Google Analytics

  I've had a site online for a few weeks, and Google Analytics is working fine. Except Goals, which are not registering for some strange reason. To be clear: visits to the site are being registered, but no goals are being registered. This is not correct, as people are visiting the goal pages. I've set up two pages specifically to test this, Funnel Page and Goal Page. (You can visit these, but please do not visit any other pages on the site, as I am performing an experiment and SO referrals would taint results). Below is a screenshot of Profiles > Goals on Analytics. Can you see any obvious mistakes I have made? I think I must have missed something really obvious, as this is my first time using Analytics, but I must get this fixed ASAP. It's driving me crazy.

• Unable to boot either Ubuntu or Windows after kernel panic

  Hi, Today I have been unable to boot into my Ubuntu (10.10) or Windows (7) partition. Ubuntu kernel panics on boot with the error: init: hash.c:296: Assertion failed in nih_hash_search: hash != NULL I can boot into a LiveUSB environment, and from there can access all my files on my 3 partitions (1 ext4, 2 NTFS). I have also ran fsck on the ext4 partition and ntfsfix on the 2 NTFS partitions, both not finding any errors at all. And Grub is intact and have also tried a reinstall of it. So at the moment I'm currently stuck using a LiveUSB, and would like to see if there are any other options other than reinstalling. Thanks. Update I've now ran chkdsk using my Windows recovery disk, and it found errors and fixed them, but I am still unable to boot into either Windows or Ubuntu Update #2 I've decided to just re-install Ubuntu and start again as I didn't really want to spend any more time looking around whilst I need this computer for work.   Last night my system shutdown unexpectedly and when i restart it, it gave me superblock error. will then i fixed a little but. i was able to retrive my encrypted files which i encrypted my pgp public key but i was not able to retrive my private key or public key now i have ecrypted file which cannot be open because i have lost my private key. is there any way that i can encrypt my file by providing only master password and passphrase and no physical key or private key and when i am on another computer i can easily open it my same master password and passphrase. • Smartassembly 5: it lives! Early Access builds now available

  I'm pleased to announce that, late last week, we put out the first early access build for Smartassembly 5, Red Gate's fantastic code protection and error reporting tool, which we acquired last September. You can download it via: http://www.red-gate.com/messageboard/viewforum.php?f=116 It's obviously pretty early days, so please do not try to use this to protect a production application, but we've already done a lot of work in some key areas: We're simplifying and streamlining the licensing model (you won't see this yet, but a lot of the work on this has already been done). We've improved usability of the product, with a better menu, reordering of project settings, and better defaults. We've also fixed a load of bugs, which I'll let Alex blog about in more detail. On a slightly more trivial level, the curly braces are also no more. Over the coming weeks, we'll be adding more improvements, and starting usability tests. • Windows in StreamInsight: Hopping vs. Snapshot

  Three weeks ago, we explained the basic concept of windows in StreamInsight: defining sets of events that serve as arguments for set-based operations, like aggregations. Today, we want to discuss the so-called Hopping Windows and compare them with Snapshot Windows. We will compare these two, because they can serve similar purposes with different behaviors; we will discuss the remaining window type, Count Windows, another time. Hopping (and its syntactic-sugar-sister Tumbling) windows are probably the most straightforward windowing concept in StreamInsight. A hopping window is defined by its length, and the offset from one window to the next. They are aligned with some absolute point on the timeline (which can also be given as a parameter to the window) and create sets of events. The diagram below shows an example of a hopping window with length of 1h and hop size (the offset) of 15 minutes, hence creating overlapping windows:   Two aspects in this diagram are important: Since this window is overlapping, an event can fall into more than one windows. If an (interval) event spans a window boundary, its lifetime will be clipped to the window, before it is passed to the set-based operation. That’s the default and currently only available window input policy. (This should only concern you if you are using a time-sensitive user-defined aggregate or operator.) The set-based operation will be applied to each of these sets, yielding a result. This result is: A single scalar value in case of built-in or user-defined aggregates. A subset of the input payloads, in case of the TopK operator. Arbitrary events, when using a user-defined operator. The timestamps of the result are almost always the ones of the windows. Only the user-defined  operator can create new events with timestamps. (However, even these event lifetimes are subject to the window’s output policy, which is currently always to clip to the window end.) Let’s assume we were calculating the sum over some payload field: var result = from window in source.HoppingWindow( TimeSpan.FromHours(1), TimeSpan.FromMinutes(15), HoppingWindowOutputPolicy.ClipToWindowEnd) select new { avg = window.Avg(e => e.Value) }; Now each window is reflected by one result event:   As you can see, the window definition defines the output frequency. No matter how many or few events we got from the input, this hopping window will produce one result every 15 minutes – except for those windows that do not contain any events at all, because StreamInsight window operations are empty-preserving (more about that another time). The “forced” output for every window can become a performance issue if you have a real-time query with many events in a wide group & apply – let me explain: imagine you have a lot of events that you group by and then aggregate within each group – classical streaming pattern. The hopping window produces a result in each group at exactly the same point in time for all groups, since the window boundaries are aligned with the timeline, not with the event timestamps. This means that the query output will become very bursty, delivering the results of all the groups at the same point in time. This becomes especially obvious if the events are long-lasting, spanning multiple windows each, so that the produced result events do not change their value very often. In such a case, a snapshot window can remedy. Snapshot windows are more difficult to explain than hopping windows: they represent those periods in time, when no event changes occur. In other words, if you mark all event start and and times on your timeline, then you are looking at all snapshot window boundaries:   If your events are never overlapping, the snapshot window will not make much sense. It is commonly used together with timestamp modification, which make it a very powerful tool. Or as Allan Mitchell expressed in in a recent tweet: “I used to look at SnapshotWindow() with disdain. Now she is my mistress, the one I turn to in times of trouble and need”. Let’s look at a simple example: I want to compute the average of some value in my events over the last minute. I don’t want this output be produced at fixed intervals, but at soon as it changes (that’s the true event-driven spirit!). The snapshot window will include all currently active event at each point in time, hence we need to extend our original events’ lifetimes into the future: Applying the Snapshot window on these events, it will appear to be “looking back into the past”: If you look at the result produced in this diagram, you can easily prove that, at each point in time, the current event value represents the average of all original input event within the last minute. • Reporting defects in Agile

  I am working in sprint. At the end of sprint I need to send a defect report per sprint. Considering the below scenario please let me know your views. Two teams(A & B) are working at different locations in Sprint-2 and I am a tester from Team-A and report the defects for the items developed by Team-A in each sprint Question 1. I reported few defects in Sprint-2 for the functionality developed by Team-B in previous sprint. Do I have to consider this as observation or defect and report to Team-A? 2. I reported 5 defects of Sprint-2 for the functionality developed by team-A. All the defects are fixed and closed by me in the same sprint. Before the end of sprint I observed 2 defects got reopened for some reason. Now the defect count should be 5 or 7(5+2) should be considered for this sprint? Thanks Khan

• Pixel alignment algorithm

  I have a set of square blocks, I want to draw them in a window. I am sure the coordinates calculation is correct. But on the screen, some squares' edge overlap with other, some are not. I remember the problem is caused by accuracy of pixels. I remember there's a specific topic related to this kind of problem in 2D image rendering. But I don't remember what exactly it is, and how to solve it. Look at this screenshot. Each block should have a fixed width margin. But in the image, the vertical white line have different width.Though, the horizontal lines looks fine.
