• android use local service to refresh map UI

  I don't need a strict code related answer I just need somebody to tell me what I am missing. My application has to retrieve from a web service (xmlrpc) the positions of some users I know and update their position on a MapView. So I decided to use a Service and an Activity extending MapActivity to show results. I thought about two solutions: I ) start the service and make it ask every minute for these positions and send them to the activity as a bundle via intent. (This didn't work out well, since once shown I couldn't find a method to let the activity continue refresh itself until she stop receiving intents+data from the service) II ) Incorporate a thread within the activity which starts the service via context.startService(...) every minute. And the MapUI refresh itself once the service send back an intent and stop itself. (Maybe I will fall in the same problem category as before I haven't tryied yet). I am also giving directions (via maps.google ws) in this way I'd like to refresh only users positions on the map and save the route. What Am I missing do you have any suggestions? related to activities/services internal mechanics, don't know launch modes, use broadcast receivers or intent filters? Thanks in advance

  I am trying to setup a SSL proxy for one of my internal servers to visit https://www.googleapis.com using Squid, to make my Rails application on that server to reach googleapis.com via the proxy. I am new to this, so my approach is to setup a SSL transparent proxy with Squid. I build Squid 3.3 on Ubuntu 12.04, generated a pair of ssl key and crt, and configure squid like this: http_port 443 transparent cert=/home/larry/ssl/server.csr key=/home/larry/ssl/server.key And leaves almost all other configurations default. The authorization of the dir that holds key/crt is drwxrwxr-x 2 proxy proxy 4096 Oct 17 15:45 ssl Back on my dev laptop, I put <proxy-server-ip> www.googleapis.com in my /etc/hosts to make the call goes to my proxy server. • Multiple infowindows - tearing my hair out

  Ok, I'll admit I'm nowhere near the best programmer on the planet - and I'm used to the answer staring me right in the face but not making sense of it. Problem I need to display multiple markers on a map, each with their own infowindow. I have created the individual markers without a problem, but don't know how to create the infowindows for each. Steps so far I am generating a map using the V3 API within an ASP-based website, with markers being created from a set of DB records. The markers are created by looping through a rs and defining a marker() with the relevant variables: var myLatlng = new google.maps.LatLng(lat,long); var marker = new google.maps.Marker({ map: map, position: myLatlng, title: 'locationname', icon: 'http://google-maps-icons.googlecode.com/files/park.png' }); This is creating all the relevant markers in their correct locations. What I need to do now, and am not sure of how to achieve is give each of them their own unique infowindow which I can use to display information and links relevant to that marker. • Inserting Google Maps into a WYSIWYG editor, then saving and retrieving properly

  Hi, I'm trying to extend jWysiwyg with an function to add a map from Google Maps. I can get the map all right, but I'm having problems with how to handle the generated map so it can be saved with the page and then retrieved. To open the process up a bit: User enters editor which is created using jWysiwyg. User clicks on a button which asks for an address, then returns the corresponding latitude and longitude. I use this location information to create a map using Google Maps API (V3), which I then insert into the editable WYSIWYG area. When I save the page, the whole Google generated HTML gets saved into the database, which will not work properly when opened next time (I get a grey box when I open up the page again). Now, the problem is that I need to insert the map in such a format that it will work afterwards (perhaps using <script> tags). I also need the map to be visible in the WYSIWYG editor itself, so I cannot just put in a placeholder tag which would later be populated with the correct map data. So, in short; how would you insert a Google Map into a WYSIWYG editor in a way that it is both visible/previewable from the editor itself and could also be saved in a format that would work properly when opened the next time?

• Google Maps: Simple app not working on IE

  We have a simple Google Maps traffic application up at: http://www.avonandsomerset.police.uk/newsroom/traffic/ For some reason it's recently stopped working in IE correctly. At this point in time it was using V2 of the API, so I've just upgraded it to use V3 - but it still won't work in IE. It works fine in Chrome & Firefox. But in all versions of IE I've tired (6,7,8) the Google Map doesn't load fully. The problem The Google Map DIV will generally load all the controls (Zoom, Powered by Google, map types) but the actual map tiles do not appear in IE. • Google Maps - custom icons with infoWindows

  Hiya, As far as I can tell, this code is fine, and should display some custom icons with popup HTML windows. But the popups aren't working! Can anyone point out what I'm doing wrong?   Hi all, I just started working using Google Maps API yesterday, and trying to set up drive directions to my map. My problem is: when I call the function load, [...] gdir = new GDirections(map, directionsPanel); [...] gdir.load("from: " + fromAddress + " to: " + toAddress); it returns a map whose markers are not draggable. So, I need to make them draggable in order to recalculate the directions, but I can't get the markers objects. Someone knows how can I do it? Thanks, Ivan.

  I have a city "map" (for example - Moscow). She in accuracy repeats the contours the given city in google maps (that is it is copied from google maps and it is a little processed, but the sense remained the same). Also I have object co-ordinates in a city (in co-ordinates of google). Problem: how to convert google co-ordinates to the co-ordinates of my picture (that is in pixels on OX and OY on a picture). That is I receive google-co-ordinates and it is necessary for me to draw this point on my picture. The most desired variant of the answer - is based on javascript, but it is possible and on php. I know that on small scales (for example on city scales) it to make simply enough (it is necessary to learn what google-co-ordinates has one of picture corners, then to learn "price" of one pixel in google-co-ordinates on a picture on axes OX and OY separately). But on the big scales (country scale) "price" of one pixel will be not a constant, and will vary strongly enough and the method described above cannot be applied. How to solve a problem on country scales?

• std::map for storing static const Objects

  I am making a game similar to Minecraft, and I am trying to fine a way to keep a map of Block objects sorted by their id. This is almost identical to the way that Minecraft does it, in that they declare a bunch of static final Block objects and initialize them, and then the constructor of each block puts a reference of that block into whatever the Java equivalent of a std::map is, so there is a central place to get ids and the Blocks with those ids. The problem is, that I am making my game in C++, and trying to do the exact same thing. In Block.h, I am declaring the Blocks like so: //Block.h public: static const Block Vacuum; static const Block Test; And in Block.cpp I am initializing them like so: //Block.cpp const Block Block::Vacuum = Block("Vacuum", 0, 0); const Block Block::Test = Block("Test", 1, 0); The block constructor looks like this: Block::Block(std::string name, uint16 id, uint8 tex) { //Check for repeat ids if (IdInUse(id)) { fprintf(stderr, "Block id %u is already in use!", (uint32)id); throw std::runtime_error("You cannot reuse block ids!"); } _id = id; //Check for repeat names if (NameInUse(name)) { fprintf(stderr, "Block name %s is already in use!", name); throw std::runtime_error("You cannot reuse block names!"); } _name = name; _tex = tex; //fprintf(stdout, "Using texture %u\n", _tex); _transparent = false; _solidity = 1.0f; idMap[id] = this; nameMap[name] = this; } And finally, the maps that I'm using to store references of Blocks in relation to their names and ids are declared as such: std::map<uint16, Block*> Block::idMap = std::map<uint16, Block*>(); //The map of block ids std::map<std::string, Block*> Block::nameMap = std::map<std::string, Block*>(); //The map of block names The problem comes when I try to get the Blocks in the maps using a method called const Block* GetBlock(uint16 id), where the last line is return idMap.at(id);. This line returns a Block with completely random values like _visibility = 0xcccc and such like that, found out through debugging. So my question is, is there something wrong with the blocks being declared as const obejcts, and then stored at pointers and accessed later on? The reason I cant store them as Block& is because that makes a copy of the Block when it is entered, so the block wouldn't have any of the attributes that could be set afterwards in the constructor of any child class, so I think I need to store them as a pointer. Any help is greatly appreciated, as I don't fully understand pointers yet. Just ask if you need to see any other parts of the code.

• Google Chrome install fails with error 0x80004002

  I'm using Windows 7 64 bits and I'm trying to install Google Chrome. However, every time I do, I get this error message: Google Update installation failed with error 0x80004002. There is a Show me help for this issue link, but it does nothing. I tried the standalone installer to no avail. I also tried to delete the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Google registry key, as suggested by other answers, with no more positive effects.

  The sync that Google offers for Google Contacts < Mac OS X Address Book is seriously flawed. It doesn't sync automatically, it doesn't sync all contacts, it doesn't sync all fields. See here for a list of warnings and issues. Is there a better way to sync Google Contacts to Mac Address Book bidirectionally? Preferably free, and preferably without adding extra software. I have tried to do it through Plaxo (which has an excellent Mac Address Book sync, albeit through an extra software install), but Plaxo doesn't handle Google Sync well (no updates). UPDATE: For the new Mac OS X Snow Leopard this shouldn't be an issue. This question is looking for a Leopard answer.

  In my PC i am using google public DNS as DNS server.In Internet protocol(TCP/IP) properties i have set Preferred DNS server as 8 8 4 4 and Alternate DNS server as 8 8 8 8. According to me this DNS server should be used to resolve any request to website to its IP by using this DNS servers.(see google DNS and How Domain Name Servers Work). Amazon very clearly posts there reliability and SLA: http://aws.amazon.com/s3/#protecting Their rates are obviously higher than Google's, but it is really hard to compare without having an SLA. Does anyone know what Google's commitment is for reliability? Is it 99.99% for data, is there anyway to make that more durable? • Is there an effective tab manager for Google Chrome?

  I've tried a few extensions but I wasn't very satisfied, I'm basically looking for an extension that allows me to group sets of tabs in such a way that I'm able to quickly switch between the groups within the same window. That is to say, if I had 5 Wikipedia tabs and 5 Stack Exchange tabs, ideally I would create 2 groups, hide the tabs of one of them, and switch between the Wikipedia and Stack Exchange tabs back and forth as I need without leaving the same window (note that I'm not specifically looking for grouping by site, that was just a simplified example) Does an extension like this exist? PS: No, I don't actually have 5 Wikipedia tabs open while browsing Stack Exchange sites :-)

• Performance of Google Desktop Search on Windows 7

  I have read that that installing Google Desktop Search on Vista can slow down the computer because Vista already has a search indexing feature, and adding Google's separate indexing feature results in a performance hit.   Is it possible to set Google chrome with a custom user profile as the default browser? When I set google chrome as the default browser, it picks the "default" user profile as against the custom one I have setup. I tried setting google chrome as default browser after opening it from that particular user profile, but it doesn't seem to have an effect. • ReadyNAS issue with Google Apps?

  The power went out (again) in my house today so I decided to set up some alerting. Since I have a ReadyNAS and the latest version of Raidinator seems to have SMTP TLS support, I figured I would try setting things up to email to a domain I have hosted on Google Apps. At this point, I have everything working IF I use a Gmail account but as soon as I switch to a Google Apps email address, it stops working and complains with smtpstatus=535 smtpmsg='535-5.7.1 Username and Password not accepted. Learn more at \n535 5.7.1 http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=14257 30sm16076226wfd.23' errormsg='authentication failed (GNU SASL, method PLAIN)' exitcode=EX_NOPERM I'm wondering if anyone else has encountered this. Google's extremely aggressive captcha does not help but I am able to log in now without a captcha from a browser so I'm open to any ideas why the simple switch of a user/password combo that is supposed to work does not. I'm also attaching my config so that others can see how to set things up.

• How to import UTM coordinates into Google Earth?

Google Earth is able to show UTM coordinates, but I have not found a way to import points or enter coordinates in a placemark's properties with UTM coordinates.
